Mayon Volcano in Albay emits a thick plume of ash following its eruption on May 2, 2026. Footage shows a dense column of grey ash rising above the ‘perfect cone', drifting across nearby areas. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said: 'Ongoing pyroclastic density current along Mi-isi gully on the south-southwestern slopes of Mayon Volcano.' The volcano remains at Alert Level 3, with authorities banning entry within a six-kilometer radius to protect the public. Mayon, a popular tourist attraction, is the most active volcano in the Philippines. Its deadliest eruption occurred on Feb. 1, 1814, when around 1,200 people were killed, many of whom had taken shelter inside the Cagsawa church, leaving only its bell tower visible above the debris.
