00:04:17I drank
00:04:19and smoked
00:04:20because I
00:04:20was stressed
00:04:21by all
00:04:21this
00:04:23Well, shit
00:04:26That is, uh, poetic
00:04:32I grew up in a conservative Christian family
00:04:35I was heavily involved in my church youth group
00:04:37I was on student council
00:04:39A star soccer player
00:04:40And I filmed everything
00:04:42Oh, look at that cute person
00:04:45Oh, wait, that's me
00:04:48And I'm interviewing Catherine
00:04:50In other news, a man who was swallowed by a whale
00:04:52Ran all the way to the end until he got pooped out
00:04:54Do not try this at home
00:04:55Here I go!
00:04:57Oh my god!
00:05:02Okay, cut
00:05:03But you can see the rest when it hits theaters this fall
00:05:06There we go
00:05:07Is it on?
00:05:08It's interesting to look back at my home videos
00:05:10And try to pinpoint where things went wrong
00:05:12This is daddy and his three girls saying cheese
00:05:15My dad was the original documentarian
00:05:17And here is a shot of the cameraman
00:05:20I grew up with the camera always in my face
00:05:23Daddy
00:05:24Cheese
00:05:25And we're going to
00:05:26Cheese
00:05:26And cheese, do you hear her?
00:05:28Yeah
00:05:29Oh
00:05:30My mom was dying of breast cancer
00:05:32And my dad wanted to make sure my sisters and I
00:05:34Had videos to remember her by
00:05:36Do you see those three little tapes up there?
00:05:38Somewhere I suggested that I get these cassettes
00:05:42And just have one for each of the girls
00:05:43Just to say things
00:05:44You know
00:05:45Not that things might not work out
00:05:48But you know
00:05:49Just so I can have a peace of mind
00:05:51That the girls have something personal for each of those
00:05:54She died a week before I turned two
00:05:57Happy birthday
00:05:59Dear Catherine
00:06:01Happy birthday
00:06:02So these videos are the only glimpse into what life was like with my mother in it
00:06:07My dad got remarried when I was seven to my evil stepmother
00:06:11Heaven isn't my child
00:06:12Would you go away with your little camera?
00:06:15What are you doing with your little tape record?
00:06:17Are you going to take it into court?
00:06:19It's kind of a Cinderella story
00:06:20Some day my friends will come
00:06:25My evil stepmother has kicked me out of the house
00:06:28And now I'm here in the woods
00:06:29And I have no place to go
00:06:31Why would she do that?
00:06:34Because she's evil
00:06:35And I hate that bitch
00:06:37Things got really bad at home
00:06:39And I started acting out
00:06:40Drinking, smoking, sneaking out at night
00:06:44Typical teenager stuff
00:06:46I begged my dad to let me go somewhere
00:06:48Anywhere
00:06:49As long as I didn't have to stay at home with her
00:06:52In the middle of sophomore year
00:06:54I transferred to a private Christian boarding school
00:06:56In Long Island, New York
00:06:58I was only there for a few months
00:06:59Before I was forced to withdraw
00:07:00For having Mike's Hard Lemonade
00:07:02In violation of the school's zero tolerance policy
00:07:06I was sitting in the principal's office
00:07:10My dad told me he was on his way to come get me
00:07:13He was going to be driving up from D.C.
00:07:16But then these two people walk in
00:07:18And they have handcuffs
00:07:21They said, we're here to take you to your new school
00:07:26My parents had hired two strangers
00:07:28To forcibly escort me to Academy at Ivy Ridge
00:07:31In the small town of Ogdensburg
00:07:32In upstate New York
00:07:35I got here at three in the morning
00:07:40It was pitch blackout
00:07:44The transport car just pulled up in here
00:07:47And they sent some staff here
00:07:49To come greet me
00:07:51And I walk in
00:07:52And I set my bags down
00:07:57And then I turn around to go back outside
00:08:00To get the rest of my stuff
00:08:02And they pulled me back
00:08:03And they're like, no
00:08:04You can't go out anymore
00:08:07And I was like
00:08:08I just am going to get the rest of my stuff in the car
00:08:11They're like, no
00:08:12You can't go outside anymore
00:08:14We'll get it for you
00:08:15This was like the first time
00:08:17I started realizing
00:08:18Like, this isn't a normal school
00:08:20Like, what's going on?
00:08:21Then two staff members
00:08:24Flanked me on either side
00:08:25Linked arms with me
00:08:29And walked me off to the dorms
00:08:32And they said
00:08:32I was not allowed to talk anymore at all
00:08:36And, yeah
00:08:37That's most people's first experience
00:08:42At Ivy Ridge
00:08:43Is just hearing these doors
00:08:44Click locked behind them
00:08:47And you can never leave
00:08:50So
00:09:03So they escort me back here
00:09:05And then they take me into the bathroom
00:09:08The hallway was just lined
00:09:10With mattresses
00:09:12With kids sleeping out in the hallway
00:09:14With their arms out
00:09:16Their wrists out like that
00:09:17And staff at different points
00:09:18And then they brought me in here
00:09:21Into the bathroom
00:09:22And had me take off all my clothes
00:09:25And jump up and down and cough
00:09:28Strip searched
00:09:29So
00:09:30Then they had me sleep in the hallway
00:09:34As I lay on the mattress
00:09:35In the brightly lit hallway
00:09:36With my hands outstretched
00:09:38While stern-looking woman
00:09:39Monitored me throughout the night
00:09:40I couldn't help but think
00:09:42Where the fuck am I?
00:09:45The Academy at Ivy Ridge
00:09:47Is located in upper New York State
00:09:49Along the St. Lawrence River
00:09:51And close to the Adirondack Mountains
00:09:53Its remote location helps minimize
00:09:55Inappropriate distractions
00:09:57But is still only a 6-10 hour drive
00:09:59From many of the major cities
00:10:01In addition to academic curriculum
00:10:03Students are also taught values
00:10:05Integrity
00:10:06Honor
00:10:08Accountability
00:10:09And respect for authority
00:10:13The program was marketed
00:10:15As help for kids
00:10:17With bad behavior
00:10:18For lack of a better expression
00:10:20They sold it as tough love
00:10:23Many of these kids
00:10:24Are taken in the middle of the night
00:10:27Out of their bedrooms
00:10:28By these so-called transport services
00:10:30Where these big guys
00:10:32Come all dressed in black
00:10:33With their handcuffs
00:10:34Your parents are standing there
00:10:36At the doorway watching
00:10:38It's 3 in the morning
00:10:39You get woken up out of bed
00:10:41These guys grab you
00:10:42You don't know what's going on
00:10:43You're saying help to your parents
00:10:45They're just standing there
00:10:46They take you off somewhere
00:10:48You have no idea where you're going
00:10:49That alone is going to be
00:10:52A lifelong trauma
00:10:54When you first arrive
00:10:55You're put on run watch
00:10:56Where they take your shoelaces
00:10:57And make you sleep in the hallway
00:10:59Kids who were placed on suicide watch
00:11:01Had to sleep with their arms outstretched
00:11:03So staff could monitor
00:11:04That they weren't trying to hurt themselves
00:11:06They would force haircuts
00:11:07On all the male students
00:11:08Or for girls whose hairstyle
00:11:10They didn't like
00:11:11Every kid was strip searched
00:11:13Alexa had a male
00:11:15I believe
00:11:16Do her strip search
00:11:17Unbelievable
00:11:19It was this
00:11:20Like that's all you got
00:11:21You know
00:11:22And then it was jumping
00:11:23I had to squat and cough
00:11:25And then I had to pee
00:11:27Into a cup
00:11:28And at this point
00:11:29You know
00:11:29Like
00:11:30You're naked
00:11:31I was naked
00:11:32I'm peeing into a cup
00:11:33I'm covering my
00:11:34You know
00:11:34Whatever
00:11:35But then
00:11:35That's all exposed
00:11:36I was 15
00:11:38Is that not illegal?
00:11:40I mean that shouldn't be
00:11:41A male stash
00:11:41That should be
00:11:42Alexa and I were friends
00:11:44Before the program
00:11:45Alexa
00:11:46Hi
00:11:46Hi
00:11:47Hi
00:11:47I don't think I'm going to get that
00:11:49No
00:11:49I need a little camera shot
00:11:50I need a little camera shot
00:11:51I need a little camera
00:11:54I met you in 7th grade
00:11:55And my memories of you
00:11:57Honestly
00:11:57Um
00:11:58Was just like
00:11:59This super bubbly
00:12:01Like outgoing
00:12:02Crazy off the walls
00:12:03Larger than life personality
00:12:04I was really cool
00:12:06Kind of
00:12:06Yeah
00:12:06No I remember you being cool
00:12:08Like you were the job
00:12:08I was like the Ferris Mueller
00:12:09I mean if I may
00:12:11Well no
00:12:11But you were great
00:12:12Like you were super super personable
00:12:14I feel like everybody liked you
00:12:16And so
00:12:17It was shocking to me
00:12:18When I saw you in the program
00:12:19Like shocking
00:12:22Wait Catherine
00:12:23Wait wait wait wait wait
00:12:24Catherine Daniel
00:12:25Like the super Christian
00:12:27Like drinking a Kool-Aid kid
00:12:30I was a really good kid
00:12:31I was super Christian
00:12:33You were
00:12:34So
00:12:35The first day
00:12:36I remember
00:12:37Hearing
00:12:38Over the walkie talkies
00:12:40Them go
00:12:41Upper level Alexa Brand
00:12:43And I was like
00:12:44Oh hey
00:12:44I know Alexa Brand
00:12:45I went to school with her
00:12:46And they were like
00:12:47Oh you know Alexa
00:12:49Oh you can't talk to her then
00:12:50Yeah
00:12:51Like they really
00:12:52Do not want
00:12:53Um
00:12:54Close relationship
00:12:55Relationships forming
00:12:56In the program
00:12:57So like if you have
00:12:58A past relationship
00:12:59You're not talking to them
00:13:01Well yeah
00:13:01So it's a lot to process
00:13:03Because there are all these rules
00:13:04It's so insane
00:13:06It takes so long
00:13:07To learn about it
00:13:08That they literally
00:13:09When you first get to the program
00:13:11They assign you a hope buddy
00:13:12For the first three days
00:13:14Right
00:13:14To tell you all the rules
00:13:17Allison was my hope buddy
00:13:18At Ivy Ridge
00:13:19So she spent the next three days
00:13:21Explaining all the rules to me
00:13:22I remember it was just so clear
00:13:25That you really thought
00:13:28You were at a school
00:13:29Of some variety
00:13:31And so I just remember thinking like
00:13:34Oh she's about to have
00:13:36Her mind blown
00:13:38These are all the rule violations
00:13:41But then what's nice
00:13:42Is it tells you
00:13:43What you would get them for
00:13:45There are so many rules
00:13:46That it's impossible
00:13:47To learn all of them
00:13:48In those three days
00:13:49So I'll just give you the highlights
00:13:50You can't talk
00:13:52You can't look out the window
00:13:53You can't make eye contact
00:13:55With other students
00:13:56You can't touch anyone
00:13:59You have to pivot around every corner
00:14:01And maintain a strict
00:14:02Military-like structure
00:14:04You have to wear your hair in a braid
00:14:05No makeup
00:14:07No shaving
00:14:08You're not allowed to look in the mirror
00:14:10You're so controlled
00:14:11When you went to the bathroom
00:14:13You always had to keep
00:14:14The stall door open
00:14:15And so you'd have to
00:14:17Go to the bathroom
00:14:18And the staff would just
00:14:20Be staring at you
00:14:22And it would be fast too
00:14:23You didn't have much time
00:14:24101 rude act
00:14:26Intentionally passing gas
00:14:28You're literally not allowed
00:14:30To fart without permission
00:14:31No joke
00:14:32If you farted without
00:14:33Asking for permission
00:14:34It was a 101 rude act
00:14:36Minus five points
00:14:37Any nonverbal showing
00:14:38Like winking or smiling
00:14:39Is a correction
00:14:40Yeah
00:14:41Our facial expressions
00:14:42Were so controlled
00:14:44Yeah
00:14:44We literally couldn't smile
00:14:46Or that would add two days
00:14:48On to your sentence
00:14:50For us it was like a game
00:14:51Right
00:14:52You have to get
00:14:52A certain amount of points
00:14:53So you literally calculated
00:14:54How many days it would take you
00:14:55To get home
00:14:56If you got 15 points a day
00:14:58And you just tried
00:14:59To get through the day
00:15:00Just by being emotionless
00:15:02Just dissociating
00:15:03And just being like
00:15:04Let me just be a robot
00:15:05And pivot
00:15:05And get through this day
00:15:06And play this like
00:15:08Insane video game
00:15:10That is not fun
00:15:11The program runs on
00:15:13A points and level system
00:15:14Everyone starts on level one
00:15:15With zero points
00:15:16You move up in levels
00:15:18By getting points
00:15:18You earn points
00:15:20By following the rules all day
00:15:21If you break a rule
00:15:22You get a correction
00:15:24That removes points
00:15:26From your total
00:15:27On level one
00:15:28You were nothing
00:15:28And if you got a correction
00:15:30You most likely
00:15:31Didn't have enough points
00:15:32To cover it
00:15:32So you'd be sent to worksheets
00:15:34To write meaningless essays
00:15:35Or copy rules for hours
00:15:38When you got to level two
00:15:39You were allowed to have a candy bar
00:15:41Twice a week
00:15:45Level three was a big deal
00:15:47Because it meant you were finally allowed
00:15:49To have a 15 minute phone call
00:15:50Once a month with your parents
00:15:52But staff would listen in
00:15:54And if you said anything bad
00:15:55About the program
00:15:56They would disconnect the call
00:15:57And you would lose your phone privileges
00:16:00Levels four through six
00:16:01Were upper levels
00:16:03And it was a completely different program
00:16:05You could talk
00:16:07You could shave
00:16:07You could wear your hair down
00:16:09But you can't leave the program
00:16:11Until you get to level six
00:16:12And that takes a very long time
00:16:15They want to keep you here forever
00:16:17It's impossible to get points
00:16:18The program is intentionally
00:16:21Impossible to follow
00:16:22Like they make it
00:16:23So you're just stuck here forever
00:16:28My first few days in the program
00:16:30Were a blur
00:16:31Like a horrible fever dream
00:16:33This was supposed to be a place
00:16:35For bad kids
00:16:36With serious drug issues
00:16:37Not me
00:16:38This had to be a mistake
00:16:41Then I got my first letter
00:16:42From my dad
00:16:43Dear Catherine
00:16:44The reason that I had to arrange
00:16:46For special escorts
00:16:47To pick you up
00:16:47Was that I was afraid
00:16:48That if I picked you up
00:16:49And brought you home
00:16:50That I would go soft
00:16:51And just let things go
00:16:52I had to sort of trick you
00:16:54In order to help you escape
00:16:55From your own dangerous behavior
00:16:56You need to plan your action
00:16:58Around completing
00:16:58The entire program there
00:17:00It really works
00:17:01And how fast you get through it
00:17:03Is up to you
00:17:03But don't fake it
00:17:05They won't let you
00:17:06I miss you so much
00:17:08And so does Jane
00:17:08And don't try to blame this on Jane
00:17:10She feels guilty
00:17:11For being so hard on you
00:17:13In my intake file
00:17:15They said
00:17:15Jane admits she has been
00:17:17Borderline abusive
00:17:18And that
00:17:19Catherine will most likely
00:17:20Relate evil stepmother stories
00:17:22About Jane
00:17:24What was this program
00:17:25And how did my dad
00:17:27Even know about it
00:17:28If I could just hop on the phone
00:17:30And talk to him
00:17:31We could get this all cleared up
00:17:32But
00:17:33I wasn't allowed to use the phone
00:17:37When you get to Ivy Ridge
00:17:38You're cut off from all communication
00:17:40With the outside world
00:17:41Except for a letter
00:17:42We were required to write
00:17:44To family once a week
00:17:45My parents kept every single letter
00:17:47I sent from the program
00:17:49Reading through them
00:17:50Sheds light on what daily life
00:17:51Was like at Ivy Ridge
00:17:54Dear family
00:17:55In your last letter
00:17:56You asked me about my room
00:17:57And what stuff I have
00:17:58Haha
00:17:59I laughed when you asked that
00:18:01I'm in a room with four other people
00:18:03If I talk to them in the dorm room
00:18:05I will get a cat four
00:18:06And lose all my points
00:18:07The door always stays open
00:18:08And the light's on
00:18:09As to what we are allowed to have
00:18:11Two pair of pajamas
00:18:13Our uniform
00:18:14And toiletries
00:18:15And a letterbox and photo album
00:18:18Anything else is an illegal item
00:18:20Which is 50 points
00:18:21But anyway
00:18:23Enough of rules
00:18:24I hear them all day long
00:18:29The boys and girls side
00:18:30Were completely separate
00:18:31We weren't allowed to make eye contact
00:18:33With the boys
00:18:34They did school separately
00:18:36Ate separately
00:18:37And stayed in a different part
00:18:38Of the facility
00:19:08So we slept in this building
00:19:09And we weren't allowed outside
00:19:12They even built these enclosed walkways
00:19:14To connect the buildings
00:19:16So that we never walked outside
00:19:17Our whole lives are spent
00:19:19Inside the facility
00:19:20But the marketing materials
00:19:22Presented a different story
00:19:26The academy at Ivy Ridge campus
00:19:28Was formerly a junior college
00:19:30It is located on 237 acres
00:19:33With plenty of outdoor recreational space
00:19:35And nature trails
00:19:39If you look at pictures of Ivy Ridge
00:19:41You wouldn't think anything bad
00:19:43Was going on
00:19:45Once a year
00:19:46They allowed us to have a fun day
00:19:47Where we could go outside
00:19:48And play
00:19:49And have decent food
00:19:51But the marketing materials
00:19:52Made it seem like
00:19:53This was a daily occurrence
00:19:55It's very hard to find photos
00:19:57Of what life was like
00:19:58For the majority of children
00:19:59In the program
00:20:01I remember like
00:20:02Just staring at these walls
00:20:03For hours
00:20:04Probably to like break me
00:20:05I think that's probably what it was
00:20:07It became a game
00:20:08With these staff members
00:20:10Who was going to be the one
00:20:11To break Diana
00:20:13Because I had been here for so long
00:20:15And I just was refusing
00:20:16I just wouldn't follow the rules
00:20:18I just wouldn't do it
00:20:19And everybody was like
00:20:21Just fake it till you make it
00:20:23And I was like
00:20:24I can't
00:20:24I won't do it
00:20:25So at that point
00:20:27They were like
00:20:28Well then you're going to go to intervention
00:20:30Intervention is where
00:20:32They sent students
00:20:33When they were actively rebelling
00:20:35Against the program
00:20:36You can see how small
00:20:37These rooms are
00:20:39They're not very big at all
00:20:40A lot of times
00:20:42Either I'd be facing a wall
00:20:44And staring at a wall for hours
00:20:45Or they would have me face down
00:20:47I would have to be on my stomach
00:20:49With my arms out
00:20:50And my feet out
00:20:51And then with my chin on the floor
00:20:54So up like this
00:20:55So I would just have to sit there for hours
00:20:58So a lot of staff members
00:20:59Did a lot of things to me
00:21:00Because they wanted the award
00:21:02Of being the one
00:21:03Who broke Diana's spirit
00:21:04And got her to work the program
00:21:07Staff would create special challenges
00:21:09For kids who are resistant to the program
00:21:11So Diana was given quite a few
00:21:14So like the box challenge
00:21:15It's called a box of crap
00:21:17Yeah
00:21:18And it was about this big
00:21:19Yeah
00:21:20And it did not have handles
00:21:21It wasn't
00:21:22So it was just a box
00:21:23Difficult to hold anyway
00:21:24Yep
00:21:25And then it was full of reams of paper
00:21:27So I had to hold it like this
00:21:29So that's heavy
00:21:30Very heavy
00:21:31I would have to carry it everywhere
00:21:33All around the facility
00:21:34And I'd be trying to balance
00:21:35And keep in line structure
00:21:37And how long did that last for?
00:21:39About two weeks
00:21:40But that's like impossible to hold all day
00:21:43It was just like I was sore all the time
00:21:44It just really hurt
00:21:45There were like bruises all over my arms
00:21:47Like from like the corners
00:21:48And the staff sent out an email
00:21:50Saying if anybody sees bruising on Diana's arms
00:21:53It's because of the box
00:21:56So you could just never set it down?
00:21:58Never
00:21:58They'd make me run with this in gym
00:22:00Are you serious?
00:22:01Yeah
00:22:01How?
00:22:02So everyone would be running
00:22:02And I'd be like
00:22:04But I'll never forget
00:22:05I got this like strength
00:22:07And I took the box
00:22:08And I was like
00:22:09Like dancing with it
00:22:10And then like making eye contact with Amy
00:22:13Amy Ritchie was the director
00:22:15Of the girl's side at Ivy Ridge
00:22:16And all of this happened under her watch
00:22:24The entire program seemed to be one of
00:22:27More or less constant oppression
00:22:28And I said well
00:22:31If this is really happening
00:22:33This is troubling
00:22:34So I should look into this
00:22:36I was writing a series of articles
00:22:40For United Press on this
00:22:43Interviewing witnesses
00:22:44But the program did their best
00:22:47To keep you know
00:22:48The truth of what was going on there
00:22:50From getting out
00:22:51The kids were severely restricted
00:22:54In terms of who they could write to
00:22:57And you know
00:22:58Their letters were strictly censored
00:23:02If I said anything bad
00:23:03About the program
00:23:04Or asked to go home
00:23:05I would receive a correction
00:23:07The very first correction
00:23:08I received in the program
00:23:09Was a manipulation
00:23:10For asking my dad
00:23:11To take me out of the program
00:23:13I'm surprised they let
00:23:14This letter get sent
00:23:15Because it shows how
00:23:16Controlling they were
00:23:18I'm so sick of doing
00:23:19The same thing every day
00:23:20Of not being able to talk
00:23:22And I just want to go home
00:23:24And I want to watch
00:23:25I Love Lucy
00:23:25And Andy Griffith
00:23:27And talk to my sister
00:23:28And not have to stand
00:23:30In line structure
00:23:31And be able to go to the bathroom
00:23:32Without a staff member
00:23:34And be able to curl up
00:23:35In my bed when I'm sick
00:23:36And play my guitar
00:23:37And be able to look out the window
00:23:40What is it that's still wrong with me
00:23:42That you want me to change?
00:23:44Obviously something about me
00:23:45Isn't good enough for you yet
00:23:46Because you're still keeping me here
00:23:48Please just tell me
00:23:49What you want me to do
00:23:50And I'll do it
00:23:51Give me a chance
00:23:57So many more files
00:23:59I think these are all just
00:24:00Academic files
00:24:01Which are all bullshit
00:24:02I don't even give a fuck
00:24:03About my academic file
00:24:04It's like bible class
00:24:05You passed
00:24:07Okay wait
00:24:08I want to see if
00:24:09I'm in here
00:24:12Catherine Daniel
00:24:15There she is
00:24:16My academic record
00:24:17Which is probably
00:24:19Awful
00:24:19Because that was
00:24:20One of the other reasons
00:24:21I was sent here
00:24:22What did I get on the SAT?
00:24:24Don't look
00:24:25It's probably bad
00:24:25I'm actually smart
00:24:26I was just in
00:24:27Like these circumstances
00:24:28No mine was really bad
00:24:29It was 1100
00:24:30I think I have like 1100
00:24:32Yeah
00:24:33Well it's hard to do well
00:24:34In school
00:24:35When you're being abused
00:24:35At home all the time
00:24:40So this is where
00:24:41We would do
00:24:42All our school work
00:24:44We'd spend most of our time
00:24:46Just here in this lab
00:24:47And um
00:24:50Couldn't look out the window
00:24:51This is setting you up
00:24:52For failure right here
00:24:53Computer facing the window
00:24:55Not allowed to look out that
00:24:57And they had this
00:24:58Homeschooled program
00:24:59Where we would do
00:25:00All of our work
00:25:03We spent most of the day
00:25:04Just sitting in here
00:25:06And like bullshitting school work
00:25:07Because we just had
00:25:08This homeschool program
00:25:09And no one would teach us
00:25:10So we'd just keep
00:25:11Taking the quizzes
00:25:11Over and over again
00:25:12Until we got 80 or above
00:25:13To pass
00:25:14And that was like
00:25:15Our high school
00:25:16They would have
00:25:17Like teachers
00:25:18They would say
00:25:19That would sit at the end there
00:25:20That if we could
00:25:21Raise our hand
00:25:21And ask them a question
00:25:22And we could get
00:25:23Five minutes with them
00:25:24And that would be
00:25:25Our education
00:25:28I refused to
00:25:30Refer to them as students
00:25:31Because
00:25:32They weren't being given
00:25:34Anything that could be
00:25:35Called an adequate education
00:25:36They were kept
00:25:38Under repressive conditions
00:25:40You know
00:25:41If you're gonna
00:25:41Market yourself
00:25:42As a school
00:25:43Then you better
00:25:45Show me something
00:25:45That looks like education
00:25:46And I'm sorry
00:25:48I just wasn't seeing it
00:25:51Ivy Rich's slogan was
00:25:52A boarding school
00:25:53For the future
00:25:54Maybe they meant
00:25:56That at some point
00:25:56In the future
00:25:57It would be a school
00:25:58Because it never
00:25:59There never actually
00:25:59Was one
00:26:00It was a
00:26:01Behavior modification program
00:26:03We use a
00:26:04Level program
00:26:06That enables the kids
00:26:07To see where
00:26:08They've been misled
00:26:09And get rewarded
00:26:11For good behavior
00:26:13Or consequented
00:26:14For bad behavior
00:26:15Jason Finlinson
00:26:16Was the director
00:26:17Of Ivy Ridge
00:26:18And he's also an idiot
00:26:19Okay so tonight
00:26:21We're gonna talk
00:26:21About black holes
00:26:22Black holes are
00:26:25They're black
00:26:26Because as
00:26:27They're condensed
00:26:28They're really dense
00:26:29In the middle
00:26:30He couldn't spell
00:26:31Or write a complete sentence
00:26:32To save his life
00:26:33When a parent emailed him
00:26:35Concerned about the quality
00:26:36Of education at Ivy Ridge
00:26:37He replied
00:26:38All of our teachers
00:26:40Are New York State
00:26:41Certificatied
00:26:43All of the therapists
00:26:45Are Certificatied as well
00:26:46I'm sure that response
00:26:48Was reassuring
00:26:49Jason had hired
00:26:51His little brother
00:26:51Jake Finlinson
00:26:52To be the head of academics
00:26:54At Ivy Ridge
00:26:55But even Jake said
00:26:57Students are not here
00:26:58For academics
00:26:59But to work on themselves
00:27:00And their families
00:27:02Jake also banned
00:27:03Several books
00:27:04From Ivy Ridge
00:27:05One book they didn't ban though
00:27:07Was The Count of Monte Cristo
00:27:10I just found
00:27:11Count of Monte Cristo
00:27:11With my name
00:27:12In the checkout thing
00:27:13And I've always said
00:27:15That this is like
00:27:16Count of Monte Cristo
00:27:17Because I had this
00:27:18False imprisonment
00:27:18Where I planned
00:27:19Like my big revenge
00:27:21And I was like
00:27:21When I get out of here
00:27:22I'm gonna make a documentary
00:27:23About these places
00:27:24And I will get back
00:27:25And every one of you
00:27:27This is so representative
00:27:28Of like
00:27:29My program journey
00:27:30If you're not familiar
00:27:31With the story
00:27:32It's about a man
00:27:33Who was falsely imprisoned
00:27:34And used his confinement
00:27:35To plot his revenge
00:27:36Against those responsible
00:27:38I read the book
00:27:39While I was there
00:27:40And found solace
00:27:41In the thought
00:27:41That one day
00:27:42I too would escape
00:27:43This wrongful imprisonment
00:27:44And get revenge
00:27:45On those responsible
00:27:47So here I am
00:27:49Eighteen years later
00:27:50To do just that
00:27:52Ogdensburg is a small town
00:27:54So there's a good chance
00:27:55I'd run into
00:27:56A familiar face
00:28:01What are you all doing here?
00:28:03We're just filming
00:28:04In Phillips
00:28:05Because I'm
00:28:06I'm actually working
00:28:07On a documentary
00:28:07About Ivy Ridge
00:28:08Oh really?
00:28:09Yeah
00:28:10I was curious
00:28:10Would you be open
00:28:11To being interviewed
00:28:12About your time there?
00:28:13Sure
00:28:13How about tomorrow?
00:28:15Yeah
00:28:15I'll buy you breakfast
00:28:16How about now?
00:28:17Florence Dedecker
00:28:18Or Miss Sis
00:28:20As we all called her
00:28:20Was the shift supervisor
00:28:22For the girl's side
00:28:23At Ivy Ridge
00:28:26This
00:28:27Was Sis's desk
00:28:28This was like
00:28:29The control center
00:28:31Like the heartbeat
00:28:33Of the girl's side
00:28:35She would sit here
00:28:36And she'd just keep
00:28:37An eye on everything
00:28:38Like
00:28:39You pick up a correction
00:28:40You're looking the wrong way
00:28:42Get back
00:28:42Line structure
00:28:43You know
00:28:44And she just
00:28:45Like ruled the place
00:28:47From here
00:28:47Sis is a character
00:28:49I mean
00:28:49She's loud
00:28:50She's unapologetic
00:28:52If she did your intake
00:28:53You're doing like
00:28:54The full squat and cough
00:28:55You know
00:28:56She was just like
00:28:57Notoriously inappropriate
00:28:59That way
00:29:00You know
00:29:00Like
00:29:00Ah we're gonna do
00:29:01Your strip search
00:29:02Get naked girl
00:29:03Right
00:29:03The strip searches
00:29:04She was really like
00:29:06Into the strip searches
00:29:07This very very thorough
00:29:08Strip searcher
00:29:09Oh I'm so
00:29:11Strip search
00:29:12There's a missing pen
00:29:13Line up
00:29:14A pen is missing
00:29:15Who wants a strip search
00:29:20Never in my wildest dreams
00:29:22Did I think I'd be
00:29:23Buying her breakfast
00:29:24One day
00:29:25But I had a lot
00:29:26A lot of questions for her
00:29:27And then um
00:29:28Or come
00:29:29When you get a chance
00:29:29Thank you so much
00:29:31Now it
00:29:33Is this to help you girls
00:29:35Of what you went through
00:29:36I'm trying to piece together
00:29:38A lot of stuff
00:29:38So I was hoping you could help me
00:29:40Fill in some of the gaps
00:29:41Can you explain what your role was there
00:29:44What your job title was
00:29:45What they told you
00:29:46When you went into it
00:29:46When I first went in
00:29:47I was a door apparent
00:29:49Okay
00:29:49Okay my job was
00:29:51To keep you on structure
00:29:53Yeah
00:29:53Okay
00:29:54Like
00:29:55Couldn't talk
00:29:56When you wanted to talk
00:29:57You had to have permission
00:29:59For just about everything
00:30:00Everything
00:30:01Everything
00:30:01So if I was sitting
00:30:04At my desk
00:30:05And I seen you
00:30:06Going like this
00:30:07I'd say
00:30:08Catherine
00:30:09You need to get a consequence
00:30:10For off task
00:30:11Yeah
00:30:12Which is a 25 point correction
00:30:14You couldn't talk
00:30:15To the girl next to you
00:30:16You couldn't look out the window
00:30:18Upon arrival
00:30:20They had to strip down
00:30:23Okay
00:30:24Yeah
00:30:24They may have
00:30:25A cell phone hid somewhere
00:30:28In them
00:30:28Like I mean in them
00:30:31Oh in them
00:30:32Yeah
00:30:32Oh wow
00:30:33Like you always had them squat
00:30:36I guess I say
00:30:38You didn't have the privacy
00:30:39That you should have had
00:30:41You know
00:30:43Do you remember
00:30:45George Tula
00:30:46Yes
00:30:47Doesn't his wife work here
00:30:48His wife works here
00:30:50Okay
00:30:50Is she here right now
00:30:52I think she's the blonde one
00:30:54Right
00:30:56I can't see
00:30:57I think she's behind
00:30:58We'll see
00:30:58She's walking by
00:31:00You tell me if he's here
00:31:01What about George Tula
00:31:02I had been hearing
00:31:03A lot of stories about him
00:31:04He was a tough one
00:31:07George Tula
00:31:08Was the director
00:31:09Of the boys side
00:31:09Of the program
00:31:11This is him
00:31:12Tackling and restraining
00:31:13A kid
00:31:13In order to
00:31:14Forcibly shave his head
00:31:21There was a lot
00:31:23Of kids
00:31:23That would try
00:31:24To hit you
00:31:25And everything
00:31:25So you did have
00:31:26To do a restraint
00:31:28On some of them
00:31:29Oh yeah
00:31:29But I didn't use
00:31:31The restraint techniques
00:31:32That I was taught of
00:31:33Oh really
00:31:34What did you do
00:31:34I always just put a pressure
00:31:36Point on their neck
00:31:37And took their arm
00:31:38And put it behind them
00:31:40And then if they kept
00:31:41Fighting I just put them
00:31:42To the ground
00:31:44If you put a pressure
00:31:45Point on the back
00:31:46Of their neck
00:31:47They're going to go
00:31:48To the floor for you
00:31:49Yeah
00:31:49Easier if you have
00:31:51Their arm
00:31:51Between them
00:31:52Oh really
00:31:53Because they can't
00:31:54Hit you
00:31:55So after the first year
00:31:56I said
00:31:57This ain't a boarding school
00:31:58This is a fucking prison
00:32:00Yeah
00:32:01I'll tell you what
00:32:02This food here
00:32:02Is better than
00:32:03Ivy Ridge's food
00:32:05I don't know
00:32:06How used to eat that
00:32:07I never ate a lot
00:32:09Up there
00:32:09I had a problem
00:32:11I'm not afraid
00:32:12To tell you
00:32:13The girls that
00:32:17The girls that were
00:32:18Gay
00:32:20I had a problem
00:32:20Oh sorry
00:32:21I'm going to
00:32:21I really want to know
00:32:23What sis was about
00:32:24To say just then
00:32:25But this is when
00:32:26My producer came up
00:32:27To tell me that
00:32:27We were being asked
00:32:28To leave the diner
00:32:29Okay
00:32:30Okay
00:32:31Apparently
00:32:31One of the waitresses
00:32:32Didn't want us
00:32:33Talking about Ivy
00:32:34Rage
00:32:34I wonder why
00:32:35That could be
00:32:39We just found
00:32:40A treasure trove
00:32:41So we were in
00:32:42George Tulip's office
00:32:43Oh
00:32:43Okay
00:32:44What is it?
00:32:47So
00:32:47These
00:32:49Are all restraints
00:32:51Oh jeez
00:32:52And I'm not done
00:32:53These
00:32:54Are all restraints
00:32:55Jeez
00:32:56There's over
00:32:57200 restraints here
00:32:58Over the course
00:32:59Of one and a half months
00:33:01And it look
00:33:02Writer's signature
00:33:03George Tulip
00:33:04George Tulip
00:33:05And that means
00:33:05He's the one
00:33:06That did that
00:33:06So yeah
00:33:06So I
00:33:07George Tulip
00:33:08Brought him to the floor
00:33:09Right
00:33:10Yeah
00:33:10And that was
00:33:11No that's what I'm saying
00:33:12This to me
00:33:12Is the most interesting
00:33:13Things of the finds here
00:33:15Is these
00:33:15Handwritten
00:33:16Signed and dated
00:33:17Confessions of abuse
00:33:19By the abuser
00:33:20So George Tulip
00:33:20Was a fucking
00:33:21Child abuser
00:33:22And he signed and dated
00:33:24His own confession
00:33:25And we have so
00:33:27Many of these
00:33:30I don't know if these
00:33:31Are going to be of any
00:33:32Importance
00:33:34So these are
00:33:35Oh shit
00:33:36My friend Sean
00:33:37Found a bunch of
00:33:38Archive security camera
00:33:39Footage in the building
00:33:41There were stacks of
00:33:42DVDs that were
00:33:43Compilations of the
00:33:44Most abusive moments
00:33:45You can hit the lights
00:33:47And just flip that switch
00:33:48There you go
00:33:50Oh I can't believe
00:33:51There's footage
00:33:52Wow Sean
00:33:57So this is
00:33:57This is going to be
00:33:58A restraint that takes place
00:34:00You're not doing it
00:34:01Good enough or something
00:34:02Oh jeez
00:34:03While he went down
00:34:04While he went down
00:34:05He just
00:34:06What was the kid doing
00:34:07I don't even see
00:34:08The reason for it
00:34:08There was no reason
00:34:09There was no reason
00:34:10No
00:34:10He was not doing
00:34:11Fitness well enough
00:34:14Okay
00:34:18Okay so this is
00:34:19Upstairs of dorm 1
00:34:20Oh wow
00:34:21That shouldn't be
00:34:23That shouldn't be
00:34:24Grounds for instigation
00:34:25On his end
00:34:36Holy shit
00:34:39Whoa
00:34:40Oh my god
00:34:41Oh my god
00:34:45What's in there
00:34:46This is no camera room
00:34:48What's that beat no camera room
00:34:49This is where they took you
00:34:50To fuck you up
00:34:52So this room
00:34:53Did not have a camera
00:34:54Like this was
00:34:55The big boys came in here
00:34:56And if you came in this room
00:34:58It was over
00:34:59They're tossing you
00:35:00Into the wall
00:35:01Slamming you onto the floor
00:35:02Whatever they want to do
00:35:03To you
00:35:03Banging your head
00:35:04Into the thing
00:35:04Slamming it
00:35:06Correctly
00:35:06Into this radiator
00:35:07It doesn't matter
00:35:08Because there's no cameras here
00:35:10Considering
00:35:10Considering
00:35:11What we've seen
00:35:12Staff do
00:35:14In the rooms
00:35:15With cameras
00:35:16Yeah
00:35:17You can only imagine
00:35:18What happened
00:35:19In the no cameras room
00:35:22They would take their hand
00:35:23Put it right on the back
00:35:24Of your neck
00:35:24Choke you
00:35:25Whatever they could do
00:35:26To make you
00:35:27Either stop moving
00:35:28And just feel like
00:35:29Lifeless
00:35:30You're like
00:35:30Yo I could die right now
00:35:31Like I'm about to die
00:35:32Like these dudes
00:35:33Is gonna kill me
00:35:38This is heavy
00:35:39I don't have to play this
00:35:40It's too much for people
00:35:52If you didn't go along
00:35:53With the program
00:35:53They had ways
00:35:54Of breaking you
00:35:55Physical restraints
00:35:57Solitary confinement
00:35:58Food deprivation
00:36:00The thing about you
00:36:01Quentin
00:36:01Is you never tried
00:36:02To work your program
00:36:03No
00:36:04You were level one
00:36:05What the entire time
00:36:06Eight months yes
00:36:07I never made level two
00:36:09It's hard to comply
00:36:10With something
00:36:11That you know
00:36:12Is wrong
00:36:13Quentin was at Ivy Ridge
00:36:15At the same time as me
00:36:16But he spent most of his time
00:36:17In worksheets
00:36:18And intervention
00:36:20Here's some footage
00:36:20Of Quentin being restrained
00:36:22That happened to him a lot
00:36:30They fed me two pieces of bread
00:36:33And eight ounces of milk
00:36:34For two weeks straight
00:36:35In this room
00:36:36For two weeks
00:36:40Hold on
00:36:40Excuse me
00:36:41Yeah no take your time
00:36:45You were on a chair
00:36:46Your ass had to be
00:36:47An inch
00:36:48On the chair
00:36:49Like you had to be
00:36:51On the forward
00:36:51Your feet together
00:36:53Knees fist length apart
00:36:55And you had to stare
00:36:56At the fucking wall
00:36:57And like a lot of us
00:36:58Like couldn't handle it
00:36:59So we'd
00:37:00You know
00:37:00We'd start slouching
00:37:01And this
00:37:02And they'd point at a brick
00:37:03Which brick did I just point at
00:37:05I don't know
00:37:06And they would
00:37:07There's another two hours
00:37:09Like two hours
00:37:11Wow
00:37:12Like I'm shaking
00:37:14I'm like
00:37:16It was August
00:37:17And I just
00:37:18I didn't give a fuck
00:37:20I was like so tired
00:37:21And I was
00:37:22My head was down like this
00:37:24And all of a sudden
00:37:25Somebody takes my
00:37:26The back of my head
00:37:27And pushes my chair
00:37:29To where it slides back
00:37:30Like to the point
00:37:31Where he fucking shoved
00:37:32My head between my legs
00:37:33To where it hurt
00:37:34Like it hurt
00:37:36So I was like
00:37:36Oh something's fighting me
00:37:37I pushed him
00:37:38And I was like
00:37:39Oh that's a staph
00:37:40He threw me on the ground
00:37:42Boom
00:37:43Yeah I'm sorry
00:37:44Yeah
00:37:45It's
00:37:51I was restrained
00:37:52My shit was bleeding
00:37:54Everything
00:37:54And the nurse would come
00:37:56And check on me
00:37:57Like you need anything
00:37:57I said yeah
00:37:58You got ibuprofen
00:37:59No I'm not giving that to you
00:38:01And my shit's still bleeding
00:38:02Like I'm swollen
00:38:03Like alright cool
00:38:06Just leave me alone
00:38:08Then get the fuck
00:38:09Out of this room
00:38:12I'm still dealing with this
00:38:13Like cause I
00:38:14I spent every night
00:38:16Of my life
00:38:16Blacking out
00:38:17For like five years
00:38:19Blacking out
00:38:20Was the most important
00:38:20Thing to me
00:38:21So I didn't have to
00:38:22Think about any of that
00:38:23Like the problems
00:38:24Come back tenfold
00:38:25You know
00:38:26But I did everything
00:38:28I could to chase
00:38:29That shit away
00:38:31Like I don't want
00:38:32To feel what I felt here
00:38:34I don't
00:38:34I don't even want
00:38:35To be here right now
00:38:37But I'm here
00:38:38I really don't want
00:38:39To be here right now
00:38:40But I'm here
00:38:42I'm fucking weirded out
00:38:43I'm uncomfortable
00:38:44Yeah
00:38:45I'm shaking
00:38:46Like
00:38:49Well
00:38:49Fuck this place
00:38:50Yeah fuck this place
00:38:52You know what though
00:38:53This time
00:38:53You can leave
00:38:55Yeah I know
00:38:55And yo
00:38:56That sounds a dope feeling
00:38:58That sounds a dope feeling
00:39:01Thank you for that
00:39:05Oh man
00:39:06I didn't realize that
00:39:09You can walk right out of here
00:39:11Want to do it?
00:39:12Let's get the fuck out of here
00:39:13Alright
00:39:14You did it man
00:39:17Unfortunately
00:39:17There were no security cameras
00:39:19On the girls side of the program
00:39:21I really wish there were
00:39:22The stuff that went on there
00:39:24Was just as crazy
00:39:28Oh here's a ton of skirts guys
00:39:29Oh hell yeah
00:39:32Hold on one second
00:39:33There's a bunch of
00:39:34For our vests here
00:39:36Why do I
00:39:37Why am I willingly
00:39:38Putting this back on again?
00:39:40I don't know
00:39:41Embrace the trauma
00:39:44What we went through
00:39:45Is horrible
00:39:45But some of it
00:39:47Is just so absurd
00:39:48You can't help
00:39:49But laugh at it
00:39:49It's a coping mechanism
00:39:51I guess
00:39:52Come to Ivy Ridge
00:39:54We'll fix your troubled kid
00:40:00Where's your vest?
00:40:01Did you get in trouble for that?
00:40:02Oh my god
00:40:02You're a split
00:40:03What is this?
00:40:04I am
00:40:05Aren't I?
00:40:06I love it
00:40:07I want to do that
00:40:10At Ivy Ridge
00:40:11I rebelled
00:40:12Pretty much in any way
00:40:13I could
00:40:13You know
00:40:16The medication
00:40:17I think
00:40:18Is the big one
00:40:19They were making me
00:40:20Like zombified
00:40:22I don't feel good
00:40:23And I was like
00:40:24I'm not taking these meds
00:40:25And I just remember
00:40:27Sitting behind
00:40:27Sissy's desk
00:40:29They're like
00:40:30You're going to take your meds
00:40:30You're going to take your meds
00:40:32And sis
00:40:34Got out of her chair
00:40:35And stood over me
00:40:36She pushed me to the ground
00:40:38And then sat
00:40:40Like sat down
00:40:41On my chest
00:40:42Well over 100 pounds heavier than me
00:40:44And she was like smiling
00:40:45Like crazy
00:40:46Like she like
00:40:47She's like
00:40:48She's like
00:40:49I'm going to break Dinah
00:40:50I'm going to do it
00:40:50I'm going to hurt
00:40:51Like I'm going to be the one
00:40:52Who gets these meds into her
00:40:54So they held my nose like this
00:40:57And then had their hand over my mouth
00:41:00So either they were going like this
00:41:01Or they were going like this
00:41:02And so
00:41:04It was literally like
00:41:05I was grabbing for anything I could
00:41:06Like I couldn't breathe
00:41:07I was like
00:41:08Going like this
00:41:09And then
00:41:10I started blacking out
00:41:11So I was going in and out of consciousness
00:41:15So they got the pills in somehow
00:41:17And I took them
00:41:18I fought for a pretty long time
00:41:21But if I had continued to
00:41:23Because I was blacking out
00:41:26I'm assuming I would have
00:41:27Not been here today
00:41:31We found multiple eyewitness statements
00:41:33That are signed and dated
00:41:35Detailing the incident with Diana
00:41:36At Sis's desk
00:41:38And hundreds of other abusive incidents
00:41:40That took place at Ivy Ridge
00:41:42But unfortunately
00:41:43There was some abuse
00:41:45That was never documented
00:41:47Multiple girls have come forward
00:41:49To tell me about sexual abuse
00:41:51By a staff member
00:41:52Other staff members
00:41:53Corroborated this as well
00:41:56It seems to have been
00:41:57An open secret at Ivy Ridge
00:41:59But since no reports
00:42:00Were ever filed
00:42:01I'm not allowed to name them
00:42:04This is not only an adult
00:42:07But an adult in position of power
00:42:09Over these kids
00:42:10Who could affect everything
00:42:12Well the way that she manipulated
00:42:14The girls
00:42:15Into wanting the attention
00:42:16In the first place
00:42:17Was really fucked up
00:42:18Yeah
00:42:19I mean it was
00:42:19It was very strategic
00:42:20It was really strategic
00:42:25Like how
00:42:26Well like basically
00:42:30Once she had her sights on somebody
00:42:32It was a lot of love bombing
00:42:34First
00:42:35Yeah
00:42:35So like with me
00:42:37In particular
00:42:37It was like
00:42:38There was so much attention
00:42:40Paid on me
00:42:40And I was eating it up
00:42:43Just being so starved from love
00:42:44And then like
00:42:44Things started getting very weird
00:42:47So at first
00:42:48It started with like touching
00:42:50And like non-sexual touch
00:42:51Like very platonic
00:42:52But and like again
00:42:53In this like
00:42:54This very like caring way
00:42:57You know
00:42:58Where it'd be like
00:42:59If I'm crying
00:42:59It's something where
00:43:00It's like touching
00:43:01And then it would turn
00:43:02Into things like this
00:43:03You know
00:43:03Or it would
00:43:04But it feels like a mom
00:43:05Yeah
00:43:06And then what happened
00:43:08Or like what kind of
00:43:09Happened after that
00:43:10Is like you get that love
00:43:11And you get that adoration
00:43:12From this person
00:43:13And then all of a sudden
00:43:14You're shunned
00:43:15Completely shunned
00:43:17And then you see her
00:43:18Do that to other people
00:43:20I'm sorry
00:43:20But you see her do that
00:43:21To other people
00:43:22So you're like
00:43:23What did I do wrong
00:43:23Like how did I fuck up
00:43:26You know
00:43:26Like I was just starting
00:43:27To be loved by this person
00:43:28And now they're looking
00:43:30At somebody else
00:43:30So then the next time
00:43:31She calls you in
00:43:32And wants to take it
00:43:33A step further
00:43:33You're like
00:43:34Please
00:43:34Please
00:43:35Like please touch me
00:43:36You know
00:43:37Like please show me
00:43:38This like love and affection
00:43:39Because I don't have it
00:43:42You know
00:43:43You can't even smile
00:43:44At another human being
00:43:45And now you have
00:43:46Somebody who is
00:43:47Like
00:43:50Pouring
00:43:50So much
00:43:52Like predatory love
00:43:53And affection on you
00:43:54But the only thing
00:43:56You're able to receive
00:43:57Or the only thing
00:43:57You're able to feel
00:43:58Is like
00:43:58I matter
00:44:00Like I matter to somebody
00:44:03And it was not innocent
00:44:07Like the first time
00:44:08That I was in the bed
00:44:09With her
00:44:09I
00:44:12Like to be honest
00:44:13I can like still feel her
00:44:21Sorry
00:44:29I can still feel her
00:44:30Like breathing on my neck
00:44:32I can like still smell
00:44:34What she smells like
00:44:36And then I remember
00:44:37Pretending to be asleep
00:44:38Like literally
00:44:40Just pretending to be asleep
00:44:41Like please don't
00:44:42Please don't
00:44:44Um
00:44:50Oh fuck
00:44:53Yeah so um
00:44:57There was uh
00:44:58Multiple times
00:44:58That it happened
00:44:59Multiple times
00:45:01She's a fucking pedophile
00:45:04She ruined my life
00:45:05In so many ways
00:45:15Any institution
00:45:16Where there is
00:45:18Unchecked power
00:45:19Will tend towards
00:45:20Corruption
00:45:21And abuse
00:45:22Over time
00:45:23And unfortunately
00:45:25If you're a pedophile
00:45:26These places
00:45:28Are like heaven
00:45:29Because
00:45:30You can abuse kids
00:45:32As much as you like
00:45:33In public
00:45:34Without
00:45:36Any repercussions
00:45:37Because
00:45:37Oh those kids are liars
00:45:39They're manipulators
00:45:40You know
00:45:40You can't believe them
00:45:42When I was
00:45:43Researching this
00:45:44It was just like
00:45:45Painful
00:45:45Because
00:45:47So many people
00:45:48Had just never
00:45:48Been believed before
00:45:49And the kids
00:45:51Are alienated
00:45:52Because
00:45:53They were abused
00:45:54And their parents
00:45:55Don't believe
00:45:56They were abused
00:45:56And if you're not
00:45:58Believed
00:45:58It's really
00:46:00Really difficult
00:46:01To recover
00:46:02I think for years
00:46:04And years
00:46:04You tell yourself
00:46:05Like maybe it
00:46:06Wasn't that bad
00:46:06Or
00:46:07Or maybe
00:46:07It wasn't wrong
00:46:09And it's kind of like
00:46:10When you reconnect
00:46:10With people
00:46:11And you see
00:46:11Just how
00:46:12Fucked up
00:46:13Everybody got
00:46:14For the same reasons
00:46:16That's when you're like
00:46:17Wow that
00:46:17That was real
00:46:18You know
00:46:19Like that really was bad
00:46:20Or like that was illegal
00:46:21Or that was rape
00:46:25Yeah
00:46:25And then I numbed it
00:46:27With alcohol
00:46:27For years and years
00:46:29But haven't we all
00:46:30You know
00:46:35How do you open this
00:46:36Is it true stuff
00:46:36Twisty
00:46:37Here we go
00:46:39This is
00:46:42What is
00:46:43You do the crime
00:46:44You do the time
00:46:45This is what got me
00:46:46In here
00:46:46Mike's Hard Lemonade
00:46:48Got expelled
00:46:49From the Stony Brook
00:46:51School
00:46:51With their
00:46:51Zero Tolerance policy
00:46:53So I was incarcerated
00:46:54For 15 months
00:46:58Forgot to cheers
00:46:59To freedom
00:47:00Cheers
00:47:00Cheers
00:47:01Cheers
00:47:06It was worth it
00:47:08It tastes so good
00:47:08This will be
00:47:09The darkest
00:47:10Mike's Hard Lemonade
00:47:11Ed
00:47:15I think the most
00:47:17Difficult part of this
00:47:18For the kids
00:47:21Is being entrapped
00:47:23Basically being imprisoned
00:47:25We always thought
00:47:26About running away
00:47:27Ivy Ridge
00:47:28It's right on the
00:47:29St. Lawrence River
00:47:30On the Canadian border
00:47:31Our plan always was
00:47:33Oh if we just swim
00:47:33Across the river
00:47:34And get into Canada
00:47:35We'll be safe
00:47:36But they would tell us
00:47:37That oh if you ran
00:47:39Then the neighbors
00:47:40Were allowed to shoot you
00:47:41I heard the current
00:47:43Is too strong
00:47:44And you make it
00:47:45Halfway and drowned
00:47:47All the windows here
00:47:49Were covered
00:47:50With this
00:47:51Mesh metal grate
00:47:53And there were
00:47:54Motion sensors out there
00:47:56So you just
00:47:56There's just no way
00:47:57You could run away
00:47:58Even if you did
00:48:00Manage to get out
00:48:01Of the building
00:48:01And run off
00:48:03Into those woods
00:48:04It's just miles
00:48:05And miles
00:48:06Of nothing
00:48:08Of marshland
00:48:09Of trees
00:48:12I mean imagine
00:48:13For a minute
00:48:14You know
00:48:15Spending months
00:48:16And sometimes years
00:48:17Like that
00:48:17Like you cannot get out
00:48:18You know you can't leave
00:48:19And you're in this
00:48:20Incredibly hostile environment
00:48:23What does that do to you?
00:48:25What does that do
00:48:25To your psyche?
00:48:27You know
00:48:27To your mental health
00:48:28To your emotional health
00:48:31Dear family
00:48:32I hate being in a program
00:48:34For the holidays
00:48:34The thing that upsets me
00:48:36The most
00:48:37Is sitting here
00:48:37In Ogdensburg
00:48:38And wondering if my parents
00:48:39Are even thinking about me
00:48:40If they even remember
00:48:42That I'm here
00:48:43Or if they're having
00:48:44A better time
00:48:44Without me there
00:48:46I hope you'll remember
00:48:47Me this Christmas
00:48:48Tell me what I am
00:48:49Still doing wrong
00:48:50Why am I not good enough
00:48:51To come home yet?
00:48:54Oh I remember
00:48:55Every night
00:48:56This was when
00:48:57I'd be like
00:48:57Well
00:48:58I'm here
00:49:00Another night
00:49:02Because my dad
00:49:02Doesn't want me
00:49:03He could come get me
00:49:05At any point
00:49:06But I'm here
00:49:07Because he thinks
00:49:07I need to be here
00:49:08And you had to
00:49:10Have your eyes closed
00:49:11Because stuff
00:49:11Would come by
00:49:11And watch you
00:49:12So you just lay
00:49:13Here like this
00:49:15All the time
00:49:16And then until
00:49:17The super loud
00:49:18Alarm comes on
00:49:19And then up you go
00:49:20And then it's
00:49:20Another day in hell
00:49:21Hello darkness
00:49:22My old friend
00:49:23This mattress
00:49:24Is probably gross
00:49:25Isn't it?
00:49:26I've come to talk
00:49:28With you again
00:49:32Because a vision
00:49:34Softly creeping
00:49:36That is like
00:49:37One of the worst parts
00:49:38Of the psychological
00:49:39Torture here
00:49:39Is you don't know
00:49:40When you're going home
00:49:41So you kind of
00:49:42Have this hope
00:49:43That you could be
00:49:43Pulled at any minute
00:49:45You're like
00:49:45My parents will miss me
00:49:46My parents will want me
00:49:48Home for Christmas
00:49:49My parents will want me
00:49:50For summer vacation
00:49:51My parents will want me
00:49:52And then you realize
00:49:53Oh my parents
00:49:54Don't want me
00:49:55Within the sound
00:49:58For them to be
00:49:59For them to be
00:50:00Isolated like that
00:50:02In captivity
00:50:03Hello darkness
00:50:04My old friend
00:50:05And told that their parents
00:50:08Put them there
00:50:12And told that their parents
00:50:14Don't care about them
00:50:17It's really setting them up
00:50:19For some real disaster
00:50:22You know
00:50:22I want to use
00:50:23An expletive here
00:50:24Go ahead
00:50:26It's a mind fuck
00:50:32I thought Ivy Ridge
00:50:34Was the only one
00:50:34Of its kind
00:50:36But one day
00:50:37A bunch of new kids
00:50:38Started showing up
00:50:39We were told
00:50:40They're from our sister school
00:50:41Casa by the Sea
00:50:42In Mexico
00:50:44This was the first
00:50:45I heard that we had
00:50:46A sister school
00:50:46There are more
00:50:48Of these places
00:50:48What the fuck
00:50:59When I was 17
00:51:01I was in the psych hospital
00:51:04And my stepmom
00:51:05And my grandparents
00:51:07Come to visit me
00:51:08And they hand me
00:51:09Like this brochure
00:51:10Of Casa by the Sea
00:51:12And it's all this
00:51:14Fun stuff
00:51:15Of riding horseback
00:51:16On the beach
00:51:17And doing all these
00:51:18Fun activities
00:51:19So I was like
00:51:20Alright
00:51:21I need help
00:51:22My thought process
00:51:24Was you know
00:51:25I've been addicted
00:51:26To heroin
00:51:26I've been addicted
00:51:28To pretty much
00:51:29Everything
00:51:29I've tried to kill
00:51:30Myself multiple times
00:51:32Now I needed help
00:51:34Were they able
00:51:35To help you
00:51:36With this issue
00:51:40No
00:51:44I got a phone call
00:51:45From a parent
00:51:46For a child
00:51:47I've been working
00:51:48With for about a year
00:51:49And twice a week
00:51:50Psychoanalytic psychotherapy
00:51:52And the parent
00:51:53Told me that they
00:51:53Decided they were
00:51:54Going to send
00:51:54This child
00:51:55To a therapeutic
00:51:56Boarding school
00:51:56And what I learned
00:51:58Was that they
00:51:59Would not be
00:51:59Involved at all
00:52:00That the child
00:52:02Had to earn
00:52:03The right to talk
00:52:04With them
00:52:06Which raised
00:52:07A lot of red flags
00:52:08For me
00:52:08So that caused
00:52:10Me to begin
00:52:11To look into
00:52:11This place
00:52:12Called Casa
00:52:12By the Sea
00:52:13In Ensenada, Mexico
00:52:15It's got a lovely name
00:52:17But it's a horrible place
00:52:22When I was coming
00:52:23Off of heroin
00:52:24They just
00:52:26They stuck me into
00:52:28Solitary
00:52:28Whatever
00:52:29And just like
00:52:30Let me sit there
00:52:31And like
00:52:31Detox from this
00:52:33And like
00:52:34Had myself
00:52:34Shit myself
00:52:35And like
00:52:36Already like
00:52:37Within the first
00:52:38Few days
00:52:38Like the loss
00:52:39Of dignity
00:52:40That you have
00:52:43I've been
00:52:44Abandoned
00:52:45By my family
00:52:46And have been
00:52:47Put into this place
00:52:48Obviously
00:52:48Purposely
00:52:49Because
00:52:50They gave me
00:52:52This brochure
00:52:53That said
00:52:54I was gonna
00:52:54Be okay
00:53:00And I needed
00:53:01Help
00:53:04And instead
00:53:09One of the things
00:53:10About it
00:53:11Is that
00:53:11At the time
00:53:12I learned
00:53:13Of this
00:53:13I tried
00:53:13To alert
00:53:15Every legislator
00:53:16I could
00:53:17What this was
00:53:18And this was
00:53:20At the time
00:53:20Casa by the Sea
00:53:22Was shut down
00:53:22By the Mexican
00:53:23Government
00:53:25Like all
00:53:26These federales
00:53:27Just come
00:53:27Busting in
00:53:29With their
00:53:30Assault weapons
00:53:31And they
00:53:32Ended up
00:53:33Telling us
00:53:33That it was
00:53:34Being shut down
00:53:35So a shit ton
00:53:37Of us
00:53:38Came to
00:53:39Ivy Ridge
00:53:40Apparently
00:53:41Ivy Ridge
00:53:42Was just one
00:53:42Program under
00:53:43An umbrella
00:53:44Organization
00:53:44Called WASP
00:53:46The Worldwide
00:53:47Association of
00:53:48Specialty Programs
00:53:49So when
00:53:50CASA was shut down
00:53:51Wasp offered to
00:53:52Relocate the kids
00:53:53To other WASP
00:53:54Programs
00:53:54Including Ivy Ridge
00:53:56These people
00:53:57Had facility
00:53:59After facility
00:54:00After facility
00:54:01There was the one
00:54:02In Jamaica
00:54:03Tranquility Bay
00:54:04Facility
00:54:05There was one
00:54:06In Samoa
00:54:07There was one
00:54:08That was in the
00:54:08Czech Republic
00:54:09At one time
00:54:09There was the one
00:54:11In Mexico
00:54:12There was one
00:54:12In Costa Rica
00:54:13Called Dundee Ranch
00:54:14That was closed
00:54:16At one point
00:54:17Three countries
00:54:18Mexico
00:54:19Costa Rica
00:54:20And the Czech Republic
00:54:21Have shut down
00:54:22Wasp operations
00:54:23Citing their
00:54:24Repeated abuse
00:54:25Of teenagers
00:54:26When the CASA kids
00:54:27Arrived
00:54:28We were overcrowded
00:54:29Six kids were crammed
00:54:31Into each dorm room
00:54:32And since there were
00:54:32Not enough bunk beds
00:54:33Kids would sleep
00:54:34On mattresses
00:54:35On the floor
00:54:35And in the hallway
00:54:37Conditions were
00:54:38Deplorable
00:54:38Foot fungus
00:54:40Pink eye
00:54:40And viruses
00:54:41Spread throughout
00:54:42The facility
00:54:42Medical neglect
00:54:44Was rampant
00:54:45But there was
00:54:46Nothing we could
00:54:46Do to escape
00:54:47The things that
00:54:48Would get you
00:54:49Expelled at a
00:54:50Normal school
00:54:50Would just get you
00:54:51Sent to intervention
00:54:53We were trapped
00:54:55Something had to give
00:54:57But if CASA
00:54:58Was able to get
00:54:58Shut down
00:54:59Maybe we could
00:55:00Get Ivy Ridge
00:55:01Shut down too
00:55:08It was the boy side
00:55:09That planned the riot
00:55:10We were just
00:55:11Talking about a riot
00:55:12And it actually
00:55:13Ended up happening
00:55:14Little boy
00:55:16The world
00:55:16Just wants to
00:55:17Trick you
00:55:19The goal
00:55:20What the riot
00:55:20Was to get
00:55:21Everybody home
00:55:24It was to
00:55:25Shut this
00:55:25Motherfucker down
00:55:29Now this is
00:55:30Where it starts
00:55:31You ready?
00:55:32Yeah
00:55:32You don't have to
00:55:33Buy into their lives
00:55:36Riot!
00:55:38Okay so this is
00:55:39Upstairs in the beginning
00:55:40Like right when he's
00:55:41Yelling riot, riot, riot
00:55:44He's on the phone
00:55:45He's on the phone
00:55:45So that one staff ran down
00:55:47Because there is altercation
00:55:50But as soon as that happened
00:55:51I pulled this fire alarm
00:55:54And the second I pulled it
00:55:55I can hear the doors downstairs
00:55:57Unlocking
00:56:00So the alarm was going off
00:56:01You saw the bright flash
00:56:02So the sound in there right now
00:56:04Is the alarm we all know
00:56:05Like it's deafening
00:56:10So I had a wooden bed
00:56:11Where I kicked a fucking piece of wood
00:56:14Underneath
00:56:15And I pulled it out
00:56:18And I came out here
00:56:19And I just started popping light bulbs
00:56:20Like these were all light bulbs
00:56:22And I just
00:56:23PAM
00:56:23I just popped it
00:56:25Pop it
00:56:26And I started hearing windows breaking
00:56:29Left and right
00:56:31And I just remember going like
00:56:34Come on
00:56:34Come on
00:56:35Come on
00:56:35Let's go
00:56:36Let's go
00:56:36Like get up
00:56:38Let's go
00:56:38Let's go
00:56:39I remember someone
00:56:40Wrapping a t-shirt around their face
00:56:41Like
00:56:41We're gonna do this
00:56:46That is Quentin I believe
00:56:48What?
00:56:49Shut up
00:56:49That's Quentin
00:56:50That's totally Quentin
00:56:52It took one staff
00:56:54To kind of hold us back
00:56:55For the longest time
00:56:57But then we realized
00:57:00There's numbers
00:57:03And somebody pushed through
00:57:05And I don't know who went through
00:57:06But once that happened
00:57:08The whole hallway went downstairs
00:57:13I saw the overpowering of the staff
00:57:16And the doors open
00:57:17I'm watching the runners
00:57:18It just got a lot darker
00:57:19And a lot more screaming
00:57:20A lot more chanting
00:57:21What was the chanting?
00:57:23Um
00:57:24Fuck Ivy Ridge
00:57:26Fuck Ivy Ridge
00:57:28Fuck Ivy Ridge
00:57:30My homies and myself
00:57:32Have planned this riot
00:57:34So we had ideas
00:57:35I figured if we destroyed
00:57:38All the computers
00:57:39And everything
00:57:39It would be done
00:57:41So the original plan
00:57:42Was to go down there
00:57:44And fuck shit up
00:57:46But everybody beeline through here
00:57:49Why did you not?
00:57:51Because they were hungry
00:57:54Everybody's ripping pots and pans
00:57:56Off the shit
00:57:57Just crashing the kitchen
00:57:58I'm like
00:57:59Let's go
00:57:59Let's go
00:58:00Let's go
00:58:00And like there's nobody behind me
00:58:03Because they're all in the kitchen
00:58:05And then we all get
00:58:06Put into the
00:58:08The gymnasium
00:58:09Gym?
00:58:09Yeah
00:58:10Man it's so cool
00:58:11To like know what was going on
00:58:13I mean I was in the dorms
00:58:14The whole time
00:58:15We heard the alarms go off
00:58:17We weren't sure what was going on
00:58:19You know
00:58:19They weren't like
00:58:19There's a riot
00:58:20Otherwise we'd join in
00:58:23But yeah
00:58:24They just tried to villainize
00:58:25To make us scared of you guys
00:58:26So we wouldn't join in
00:58:31So they take us into here right
00:58:32My boy was like
00:58:34Should I turn the lights out?
00:58:35I said do it
00:58:35He turns the lights out
00:58:36And it's a full on riot
00:58:38After that
00:58:40It's like a pitch black mosh pit
00:58:43I just remember
00:58:44Hating people
00:58:45Hating people
00:58:46It's like you remember tears
00:58:48And the chanting
00:58:49Just fuck Ivy Ridge
00:58:50Fuck Ivy Ridge
00:58:54You got the police
00:58:55And the fucking border patrol outside
00:58:57And everybody ready to shut us down
00:58:58They threw a smoke bomb in here
00:59:00I remember that because
00:59:02That's when they started
00:59:03Escorting us outside
00:59:05Students at the academy
00:59:06At Ivy Ridge
00:59:07Smashed windows
00:59:08And attacked staff members
00:59:10On Monday evening
00:59:10About 30 of the school's
00:59:12450 students
00:59:14Fled the campus
00:59:15Located in heavily wooded land
00:59:17Five miles west of Ogdensburg
00:59:19All the students were located
00:59:21And returned to the facility
00:59:22Twelve students were charged
00:59:24With rioting
00:59:24Assault
00:59:25And disorderly conduct
00:59:26The teenage students
00:59:27Are being held here
00:59:28In the county jail
00:59:29On $5,000 cash bail
00:59:31And will face criminal charges
00:59:34So let's talk about
00:59:35When you got sent to jail
00:59:36How was jail
00:59:37In comparison to the program?
00:59:41Like a five star Hilton hotel
00:59:45I loved jail
00:59:46Jail was freedom to me
00:59:48Like it was freedom
00:59:51Compared to what
00:59:52We were doing through here
00:59:55So the riot
00:59:56You were hoping
00:59:57Would shut down Ivy Ridge
00:59:59Yes
01:00:02But I was wrong
01:00:04Spokesman Tom Nichols
01:00:05Says the school
01:00:06Will be reviewing
01:00:07The latest incident
01:00:08And looking at procedures
01:00:09To prevent a similar occurrence
01:00:10In the future
01:00:12Since the riot didn't work
01:00:14Our only other option
01:00:16Was to complete the program
01:00:18Does this sound crazy to you?
01:00:20I haven't even told you
01:00:21About the seminars yet
01:00:22Palms up
01:00:23Palms down
01:00:24Palms together
01:00:25Palms apart
01:00:26Seminars are
01:00:27The backbone of the whole program
01:00:30If you want to get the hell out of there
01:00:32You have to
01:00:33Do the program
01:00:35It is behavior modification
01:00:37It is literal brainwashing
01:00:39The people that the program
01:00:41Most wants to influence
01:00:42Is the parents
01:00:43Not the kids
01:00:43And it was basically a cult
01:00:46Parents buy into it
01:00:48They get duped into it
01:00:49It's going to change your life
01:00:51It was the worst thing
01:00:52That happened to me
01:00:53What concerned me most
01:00:55About the program
01:00:57Wasn't the kids that got broken
01:00:58It was the kids who were successful
01:01:00Palms up
01:01:01Palms down
01:01:02Palms together
01:01:02Palms apart
01:01:27Palms up
01:01:28Palms up
01:01:28Palms up
01:01:29Palms up
