00:09Autumn is such a magical time of the year the temperatures start to cool down the
00:14colors start to change I don't know about you but I always sleep better as
00:17well well we decided we spend some time in the garden while the weather is still
00:21good so take a deep breath relax and enjoy tonight's freshly picked episode
00:26of better homes and gardens for the best baked eggs just follow your nose I
00:32don't need a timer because I can smell it Graeme's always been outstanding in his
00:38field well now that field is also outstanding and colorful if you want that
00:43floral overload there is nothing like coming and visiting a flower farm is
00:49this the most affordable tiny home we've ever featured on the show complete with
00:54a bathroom kitchen even an outdoor room and the cat's out of the bag Dr Harry
01:00sharing the secrets to a feline furniture frenzy free home
01:04all right I'm gonna cook a very simple but effective meat stroke egg stroke tomato
01:19dish shishuka said in an irish accent so you can work out what it is basically just follow me
01:30we're making a tomato base as you would like a tomato ragu so onions garlic I like to keep the
01:37onions quite rustic quite rough big pieces because you're gonna taste that bit of onion when you eat
01:43yeah so two onions good glug of olive oil garlic about three or four cloves of garlic
02:01that goes into the pan
02:11all right onions garlic sweating down
02:16you can still get these beautiful tomatoes knocking around the shops at this time of year if you can't
02:21get them thin tomatoes are fine maybe just add a little pinch of sugar to cut out the tartness of
02:28the
02:28thin tomato so the good thing about the fresh is obviously they're nice and sweet and you're gonna
02:35have that little bit of texture as they break down all right my tomatoes are starting to break down I'm
02:45gonna
02:45add a little teaspoon of cayenne pepper just to spice up that tomato mix so while the tomatoes are softening
02:54got a little bit of sage here
03:00got a little bit of thyme
03:05all right I'm gonna get a lid on this so just so the steam and the tomatoes break everything down
03:09I've got some beautiful lamb mince
03:15so normally you know everyone's used to the lamb chops leg of lamb lamb mince beautiful piece of meat
03:20especially if you get lovely bits of fat in there because the fat is the flavor and it's what it's
03:26going to carry this dish along so all you do is break it up
03:33so into that beautiful marbled lamb fat cumin teaspoon
03:40smoked paprika teaspoon
03:45ground coriander you can sort of see where this is going teaspoon
03:53salt and pepper
03:59just check our tomato mix while we're going you can see that's starting to break down now all the
04:05liquids coming out of the tomatoes look at that might just throw a little bit of time in there again
04:20all right what you can do is you can just sort of break down the tomatoes with a fork at
04:25the last
04:25bit of remaining juice out there where you've still got all the texture of the tomato look at that
04:30basically what you're making is you're making a liquid
04:34or a sort of a half puree that's going to cook the lamb and cook the eggs
04:38so what i do now is i've got my spice lamb
04:44you sort of make little little balls
04:51drop them on top now you want to leave enough room in between
04:59so now the only technical part you're going to crack your egg you're going to make a little well
05:04just big enough to hold your egg
05:19a little flourish of thyme it's going to bake in over the egg a little bit of sage
05:37all right so that's going to go into a preheated oven hot open about 180 200 the bottom's already
05:42cooking but you need to cook the top
05:52i don't need a timer because i can smell it i can smell that spicy lamb mince
06:01thanks for coming so look at that
06:11that going down in the center of a table that will cure any family of its squabbling look at that
06:19the egg has just set still a little bit runny your lamb is taking shape because it's so small doesn't
06:25need as much cooking i'm going to fry a little bit of bread to go with it good knob of
06:31butter into our pan
06:35some garlic
06:38smash it
06:41flavor the butter
06:44what i might do is a little bit of the spices we've already used the cumin
06:47the coriander the smoked paprika smell that so you're basically flavoring the bread to match the dish
07:01so
07:02get your bread in
07:06so the bread's going to soak up all the spice all the butter all the flavor
07:10what a great accompaniment to a stunning one pan wonder while the last of the bread is frying i'm
07:18going to chop a little bit of fresh mint just add a little bit of freshness to the dish
07:29mint goes on
07:40a little bit of freshness to the dish
07:42so we're going to put our bread on the side
07:48the proof is in the pudding
07:51so a little bit of that bread a little bit of the meatball the egg
08:04breakfast lunch or dinner this is what you're going to hear
08:08silence and silence in my house is very rare take what you can get try it
08:22a kaleidoscope of color and flowers wherever you turn you can't miss a visit to johnima flower farm
08:31a home away from home a portable doll's house that provides hours of imaginative play for your kids
08:44it's impossible you know when you're surrounded by flowers not to have a smile on your face it just
08:50brings so much joy and color and life it's all that kaleidoscope of color the perfumes the textures
08:56but if you want that floral overload there is nothing like coming and visiting a flower farm
09:08this here is johnima flowers a family-run flower farm nestled in the rich agricultural country of the
09:15southern highlands of new south wales now joe came here a few years ago to meet the padavano family
09:21this time i'm returning to get some of their secrets to share them with you so that you can grow
09:28the
09:28perfect flowers at your place
09:40we're growing cutting garden flowers at our place at home just like they are here now it's not for the
09:46landscape we've got plenty of flowers in our landscape but these are specifically growing the
09:50flowers to put in a vase indoors or to share with friends so these are dahlias and i've borrowed this
09:57same system it works an absolute trick so you get a couple of good strong star pickets at either end
10:03and then tomato stakes every two or three meters along the row as the dahlias are starting to shoot
10:10from the tuber in the ground you put in your first rung of wire now it's not chicken wire as
10:15you can see
10:16the gap is almost about the size of your hand so it's quite large to allow the dahlias to come
10:21through
10:21then as they grow you put in another layer of wire now that does a number of things it encourages
10:28single stems and if you need to you can thin them out to get those nice long stems it also
10:33protects
10:34them if a southerly bust or a bit of a storm windy day the plants are nice and secure and
10:40you're
10:40encouraging these tall elegant stems
10:52here janima if you want to know anything you go to the floral boss
10:55ingrid good morning it's this beautiful i just cannot believe four generations with your children
11:01yes i can't believe it either look i married into it so it was like i didn't know what i
11:07was getting
11:07into florists you know they've got a lot of joy home gardeners have got a lot of joy from growing
11:12flowers do you get the joy or is it just a lot of hard work um we do get the
11:17joy we do get the joy
11:18just like with any gardener you put something in and it comes as the seasons change and you see it
11:23come through you get enjoyment from it you know that first flowering gum that first high bloom of
11:29hydrangea you get excitement from the beauty and joy of it most definitely everyone's thinking
11:33what on earth is happening with these hydrangeas out in full sun but these look a little bit like
11:40grandma's ones they are we've kept the old-fashioned varieties they're really really hardy here they
11:46could be 30 or 40 tomorrow yes so what will you be doing in preparation this is pay attention i'm
11:53listening with all ears because this is great so we check the weather obviously constantly it's really
11:57important to us so on those really extreme days give it a really deep water um you know either
12:04the night beforehand or really early in the morning so they get a really really good hydration
12:09and they're ready set to go for the day
12:18i notice ingrid you're growing a lot of hybrids are they working for you especially with these flowering
12:23gums they do they do work for us we actually grow all um our hybrids with grafted rootstock the
12:29laura keats are loving it as well and look at the bees you know the bees are amazing you want
12:33to get
12:33bees into your garden plant one of these they're absolutely going nuts
12:41i've seen dark red this beautiful tangerine orange color how many other varieties of a flowering gum
12:47so we have a deep pink orange red and we have a beautiful soft soft pink
12:55what stage what would you be cutting them for the florist or for the market so
12:59for us as cut forestry this would be an ideal stage for us we do on a special request would
13:05pick it
13:05in bud but generally when it's really really closed they won't open so you need to see those
13:11cracked pods so then for it to open in the vase for you
13:19now i'm growing echinacea at home but nothing is strong as this what's your secret
13:23we actually let them climatize so these plants have been here for three years
13:28well mine are three years old but no which is you feeding them we do feed them i do have
13:33to say we
13:34have turkey farms around here so we utilize the turkey farms we also do a lot of composting obviously
13:40all our green waste and all of that it goes back so we're very much about what we take we
13:44need to
13:45put back into the soil would that be sort of the length of the flower that should come we would
13:49actually pick right down low then it can come back up through again the longer the better so early
13:55summer if you prune them back hard for the flowers they'll then come back again we would get another flush
14:00coming through yes yes yes this is tip central isn't it i love it
14:14ingrid mentioned that this side of the farm is where the children are actually doing a bit of
14:22exploratory work into some flowers that they've not grown before well they're having great success
14:27these are all a beautiful field of delphiniums the interesting thing with delphiniums of course is
14:32they have a permanent root system for quite a few years so this crop is going to last a long
14:38time
14:39as a cut flower
14:46there's so much here to show you gypsophila or baby's breath remember it it's a really good old-fashioned
14:52flower it's a great filler in a vase and it's just beautiful it's like gossamer as a
14:57blows in the wind the baby's breath in a garden if you want to grow gypsophila and i know the
15:02seedlings are not often in garden centers but you can get the seed and sow that in late spring
15:08right through to early summer beautiful plant and of course then snapdragons i've got the little
15:14dwarf one which will go right through spring summer and maybe even into autumn these are the taller ones
15:19that they need for their bouquets now these are just the tip of the iceberg there's so much more to
15:26show you and including a couple of surprises so hang around kisses and hugs noughts and crosses tic-tac-toe
15:35whatever you want to call it this is going to be one mighty board game
15:39it's the cutest home reno i have ever done and you don't need any power tools
15:51go on everyone it's time to put down the devices and get back in the game now a crowd pleaser
15:58that
15:58just keeps you entertained whether you're three or 103 is noughts and crosses so i'm going to be making
16:04a timber bespoke board game and all the pieces and it starts with this dressed pine panel and
16:11these dressed pine molding so i've just got this square that i've cut out 362 mil and then i've got
16:18these 18 by 18 dressed pine that's going to be our crosses and then this 18 by 12 which will
16:25be our
16:25perimeter and the dividers so i'm going to start with the 18 by 12 perimeter and i'll be cutting it
16:30using
16:31my mortar box
16:51i'm just going to glue and tack them in place
17:10and for the dividers i'm just going to be gluing them but these smaller pieces
17:13they're 95 mil i'm going to use them as spaces first and i'll sit them up against our perimeter
17:18glue the long pieces in do the same on the other side and then i can go through and put
17:23all those small
17:39bits in
17:40and that is our board complete how good does that look so now i can sit that aside and it
17:46is time to get
17:47naughty and by naughty i mean making the noughts and crosses so to do that i've got some more dressed
17:53pine and it is super simple to make the noughts basically what i'm going to do is i've got a
17:58hole
17:58saw here this one is 92 mil and i'm going to go halfway through this timber
18:12then i'm going to swap it over to a 54 mil bit i'll drill all the way through swap the
18:17bits back
18:18over and then finish it off
18:35and that is our first nought how good is it now you want to make sure that you do clamp
18:40your timber
18:41down because you can see when you've got a hole this big there's a lot of force on it and
18:46it's
19:02all right that is all our noughts sanded and looking fantastic which means now it's time
19:08to get onto the crosses and that's where this 18 by 18 comes in i've cut them all to 110
19:14mil long so
19:15now we need to join them together how are we going to do that well with a halving joint so
19:19basically
19:19they'll come together like this and sit flush just like this one here and you can see the halving
19:26joints that i've done there so now i'll mark them out and i'm going to be using my mitre box
19:31to cut
19:31them so basically i'll sit it in the spot i'll do a few saw cuts and then i'll use a
19:36chisel to finish it off
19:56and with our crosses together i'm just going over them as well and giving them a quick sand
20:01to get off these sharp edges and i'll tell you what our board game is definitely coming together we're
20:07almost complete but to finish it off putting a clear coat on our crosses and then undercoating our
20:14noughts and finishing it off in a black
20:20and that kids is how you do it and i'll tell you what even when you're not using this for
20:25your family
20:26competition night that makes a great feature on the coffee table or it would be perfect as a
20:33personalized gift but i'll tell you what greg it is game on mate you can be naught best out of
20:3810
20:39and i'll be cross because that's who i am all right all right you start mate good luck
20:45oh he's nervous i don't know where to go oh oh i've got this i've got this
20:53oh oh what's he gonna do oh he's lost it he's lost it and that kit is how it's done
21:10and it always
21:11ends in a family tantrum i want you to meet a cat called cupid cupid is a ragdoll they're a
21:22really
21:22great cat because when you pick them up they just sort of flop like a ragdoll hence the name now
21:28if
21:28you've already got a dog and you're thinking about getting a cat believe you me they are two very
21:33different animals and they need different things around your house cats need to scratch and people
21:39ask me all the time dr harry why does my cat scratch the furniture well it scratches the furniture
21:45because you haven't got a scratching post but why do cats scratch first of all they need to keep
21:58their claws sharp they all are very good hunters and they need to keep sharp claws to go out and
22:04hunt
22:05in most breeds the claw is actually retracted into the foot itself you can show the claw by actually
22:12putting a little bit of pressure underneath the pad at the front of the pad and pushing upwards
22:17and outwards and you can see the claw come out there it is now it's very sharp and needs to
22:23stay
22:23sharp that's why they scratch but they do it for other reasons too in between the pads on the soles
22:28of their feet they've got little scent glands and they deposit what we call pheromones or scent hormones
22:34they mark their territory using their feet and if you've got a cat and you put it on a glass
22:39top
22:40table and it walks across the table you will actually see these little patches little footprints
22:44of moisture that's the pheromone coming from their cat's feet and cats are very good
22:48at marking territory they'll use urine they'll use their feet and then of course they'll rub against
22:56you using their face so the scent glands everywhere they want to make sure that they own the place in
23:02which they live so they do that much more than a dog would and what other reason can we find
23:06for a
23:06cat's scratching well it's good natural exercise stretches their neck muscles and tenses up the
23:12muscles of the foreleg again all important if you're going hunting but basically cats just love
23:18to do it and when they get excited and they feel good we away they go and they scratch anything
23:24they
23:24can find you need to save your furniture you need to save your carpet so provide the cat with at
23:30least
23:30one or two good scratching posts if you've got a dog in the premises it's a good idea to have
23:34one of those
23:35posts at least a couple of meters high isn't that right yes so you get out of the way of
23:39the dog
23:39that's important right and a variety is essential i mean there's a whole forest growing in behind me here
23:53they love the hollows they love dark spaces they love all that sort of stuff but you can just make
23:57something out of a cardboard box as well as long as the cat has got something to scratch on and
24:02keep
24:03those claws sharp your cat's going to be happy it's a necessary part of cat behavior you can't stop
24:10it in fact i like to encourage it and remember if the lounge gets torn to tatters it was your
24:16fault you
24:17left the door open we all dream about feeling the sun on our back and living the quintessential

26:03more magical
26:04when you think in miniature and just imagine the joy on your kids faces as they play with this
26:09and the blooms keep coming at janima flower farm as they say wait there's more
26:23my love of interiors and styling started when i was just a little kid i always had so much fun
26:29playing with miniatures and creating dolls houses so today i'm particularly excited to turn this old
26:35picnic basket into an interactive toy complete with a bathroom kitchen even an outdoor room
26:41and the best part is when the kids are finished playing with it or maybe when you're finished
26:44playing with it it all packs neatly away now it's a simple project the first thing you need to do
26:50is just create some walls and floor and for that i'm using core flute and i'm covering them
26:56in this lovely fabric this is going to be for the bedroom but if you needed a floor you could
27:01use
27:01some contact like this that's a wood look or this cork one there's so many options and then you can
27:08create different scenes and rooms for me i'm creating a bedroom first so i'm going to use
27:13this lovely floral fabric
27:49So I'll do this back wall first.
28:02To make the bed I'm using Core Flute again and this time I'm using two pieces together.
28:08I'm attaching them using this cloth tape.
28:10Now I need a mattress and for that I'm using a spare mop head.
28:15It's nice and plush and soft.
28:17I'm just going to cut that down to size and then use hot glue gun to keep it in place.
28:53For the feet I'm using these small wooden beads and again I'm just going to use the hot glue to
28:58secure those in place.
29:01How cute is that?
29:02Now it's time to put the bedroom together.
29:08That looks super comfy but as we all know kids' attention spans don't last for very long so I'm going
29:15to set up for another room and this time it's going to be a bathroom.
29:19I'm doing the same thing with the walls only a different fabric this time which is going to replicate tiles.
29:36Now tell me this isn't the cutest little bath you have ever seen.
29:40It's actually a drink bumper which is a silicon base for a water bottle.
29:44I'm going to pop that in here and you've probably worked out by now that you need to be a
29:50little bit creative with these miniatures so this next one is actually going to be the toilet and what it
29:55is is a silicon makeup holder.
29:57I think it's probably for lip balm or something like that but for this it's going to be the perfect
30:02little potty.
30:03And this was an easy one.
30:05This is the bath mat.
30:05I love these colours and it's just been cut down from an old towel.
30:09And that is it.
30:10The perfect little day spa at home if only all bathroom renovations were that easy.
30:18So now it's time for dinner and I'm going to work on the kitchen.
30:22I absolutely love this contact as a splash back so that's what I've used.
30:26And then core flute again for the cabinets.
30:29Now to make them look a little bit more realistic, I'm just going to use a Sharpie and draw in
30:34the cupboards and the oven.
30:47Next, I've created this cork bench top for our kitchen bench.
30:51Again, I just use core flute and then some cork contact.
30:55And for the sink, this little bottle chalk which is just going to sit right there and I'm going to
31:01stick that on using hot glue.
31:25For the fridge, I've used core flute again and I've used some cloth tape to hold the surround together.
31:31And for the actual fridge, how awesome is this?
31:35It's a small pill container that opens up just like that and I've even put some fake food inside and
31:43I'm going to use some adhesive velcro to attach the two together.
32:01We need a chef in our kitchen to cook dinner, so I thought Colin here would know exactly what to
32:07do.
32:09What are you going to cook for us, Colin?
32:12What are you going to cook for us, Colin?
32:12Oh, a stew, I think he said.
32:15For the floor outside, you guessed it, I've used core flute again and covered it in contact, but this time
32:20I've used a green felt so that it looks like grass and I'm very happy with that.
32:25Then, for an outdoor rug, I've just got this little woven coaster which I thought would be perfect.
32:30I've made a table out of some timber craft dollies and this little piece of round timber for the top.
32:36A couple of rubber furniture feet which I'm going to put upside down as stools.
32:43Very cute.
32:44And then, of course, outside you need a ball and a couple of bats and then this part I really
32:52love.
32:52I've made this hammock which I'm going to place on these posts and for that I just used a craft
33:01stick, a bead, and to keep them stable I'm going to use the furniture feet again.
33:06Pop those in there using some glue to hold them in place and then tie my hammock on.
33:28I absolutely love that we have created four scenes out of this old picnic basket.
33:34And just imagine the joy on your kids' faces as they play with this.
33:37The best part is it's portable so you can pop it in the car, you can take it on holidays
33:41with you and it packs away neatly at the end of the day.
33:45What do you think, Colin? Looks like you're having a pretty good time in there.
33:54We've explored the flower fields here at Janima, but there's a lot more to come, especially inside.
34:01If you like to garden as much as I do, check us out on 7 Plus, where you can find
34:06all your favourite stories, plus tonnes of gardening how-tos, exclusive content and more.
34:24What an incredibly breathtaking day we've had here at the Janima Flower Farm in the southern highlands of New South
34:31Wales.
34:31There's just beautiful flowers wherever you look.
34:34But as they say, wait, there's more.
34:36Inside this glass house, they're using high-tech to increase the production of flowers even more.
34:42Come with me.
34:50Oh, Marco, I can see you're busy, mate. How are you?
34:53Yeah, not too bad.
34:53Yeah, good to see you.
34:54Now, tell me, what have you got growing here?
34:56I can see these beautiful jubble gerberas.
34:58We've got a few different little things that we experiment on just to give us a little bit of different
35:03flowers that you wouldn't expect.
35:04So you've got gerberas, you've got the pom-pom varieties and lots of different colours.
35:09You've got Siam tulips, which is typically like a tropical kind of plant.
35:13Yes.
35:13And also, it's a dwarf variety of kangaroo paw behind me here, which keep coming up all year and they're
35:20looking very nice.
35:21And having them in the glass house, they don't come in and out of season, they just keep going all
35:26year round, which is really good.
35:27What environmental controls can you have in here?
35:30So what we've got in here, say in winter, we can close the windows, keep it warm.
35:33We can heat through the floor and that keeps it warm in winter.
35:38There's lights along the roof.
35:39Yep.
35:39And we turn them on to extend the daylight hours.
35:42So you have a lot of variables that you're able to control.
35:44So I guess you're doing a lot of fertilising control?
35:46Yeah, so when we water, we have fertiliser that we add in with the water at whatever rate it may
35:52be, depending on the crop.
35:54When we do that, you wouldn't see us coming in, you wouldn't see water coming in overhead.
35:59It's all coming through, we have a drip line.
36:01Once again, minimise the chances of disease or any kind of spread.
36:04And it's just, we know 100% how much water is going on because there's no wastage, there's nothing going
36:09in the air or anything like that.
36:10And I notice you're also catching it.
36:12Then we catch it, we take it out and we use it again.
36:14Well, thank you for your time today.
36:16There's so much to see, but I'll leave you with it.
36:19Yeah.
36:19Unless you get back to your gerberas.
36:21Yeah.
36:21Thanks, Marko. Brilliant.
36:22Yeah.
36:23Yeah.
36:25Yeah.
36:37Yeah.
36:39Yeah.
36:41Yeah.
36:44Yeah.
36:49Yeah.
36:49Yeah.
36:49Yeah.
36:55Yeah.
36:57Yeah.
37:01Yeah.
37:02Yeah.
37:03Yeah.
37:15Yeah.
37:16this beautiful glaucousy blue colour and its shape but this one when you put it into a vase
37:22it releases that beautiful eucalyptus aroma and the interesting thing is you can cut these back
37:27quite hard as you can see here then they'll sprout again and they'll do that for maybe four or five
37:33years before they eventually peter out but you can actually prune them down quite quite low as you can
37:38see here right down to the ground argyle apple it's a great tree as a beautiful garden specimen
37:43and fabulous as a cut foliage plant in a bouquet
37:48after all that expert production and then the harvesting out in the field it all ends up here
38:00in the packing shed with nicola and her team isn't baby breath beautiful it is beautiful this time of
38:06year absolutely in full bloom yeah i just love it what's the sort of time frame between harvesting
38:12and getting to the markets we have a pretty quick time frame so we pick the day before and it's
38:18at
38:18the market the next day how do you look after them in transit because you know that's really a delicate
38:24time because they're in a truck and you know yeah and we before they end up there we grade them
38:29all
38:29so we check all the stems to make sure they're obviously nice and white and fluffy we bunch them
38:36up and put them in buckets with treated water so that helps extend the vase life for you okay now
38:43i noticed the team over there they're all sorting those out what into colors and quality yeah we size
38:48it from shortest to tallest so that you get your premium bunches off first and then the shorter ones
38:55come later on now you mentioned about treated water my grandmother said you've got to throw a penny in
39:01but no one can find a penny anymore so what works and what doesn't no the penny's a bit of
39:06an old
39:07wives tale for most things i'm glad you said that for most things it's just recut the stems and change
39:14the water every two to three days right so we get little bouquets like this and it's just a little
39:20seasonal mix of everything that's on the farm isn't that beautiful it just reminds me just what i love
39:26about being a gardener and uh out here you've given us heaps of tips the whole family has shared
39:32lots of advice that's going to keep our flowers growing better growing stronger lasting longer
