00:07So a common lifestyle dilemma we hear is this, is it possible to have an affordable dream home,
00:13you know, a big house, but still be within an easy commute of a large city?
00:17Well, that is one of life's quandaries we're going to unpack tonight on Better Homes and Gardens.
00:22Tonight, when it comes to showering outdoors, the sky's the limit.
00:26I'm going to make this really special. We're going to have a concrete floor,
00:28and we're going to have some privacy screens, and of course, a load of plants.
00:32Why not embrace your inner child?
00:34I have so many happy memories of getting crafty as a kid.
00:38It's never too late to turn your week around.
00:40I've got a dessert that's going to take you ten minutes from start to finish,
00:44and I'm going to make you a hero.
00:47And the grass is always greener, for these dogs at least.
00:51I wonder what it is about this corner of the backyard that has two dogs totally mesmerised.
01:04This segment is brought to you by Shapescaper,
01:07the Australian-made modular steel landscaping system.
01:11You like ice cream and coffee
01:15In the skies and apple trees
01:17Do you ever get that feeling when you've been away on holiday?
01:19You know, the one where you want the vibe to just keep going?
01:22You get home from the beach, you're covered in sand,
01:24you have a nice shower outside before you head in.
01:27Well, we're not too far from the beach here,
01:28and that's exactly what the homeowner wants.
01:31Lucky for me, they've already started on the shower.
01:39Now, even if you're not by the beach,
01:40having an outdoor shower is a great addition to the garden.
01:43It's nice to wash off after a hard day out, covered in mud.
01:46And it can be really simple.
01:47Here's a perfect spot.
01:48We could put a rainhead shower up here.
01:50It'd be lovely.
01:50It could drain away into the garden.
01:51Lucky for me, it's already been dug out,
01:53and there is a sewer line here.
01:54So we've had a plumber put in a stand for some drainage.
01:57It's really important you do a dial before you dig.
01:59That way, you know what to miss and what you can take advantage of.
02:02I'm going to make this really special.
02:03We're going to have a concrete floor.
02:04We're going to have concrete stepping stones coming into it.
02:06And then we're going to have some privacy screens.
02:08And of course, a load of plants.
02:17For the formwork of our garden,
02:19I'm going to use the Shapescaper steel edging.
02:21And for the shower base, I'm using a custom curve.
02:24So we've had this made so it's nice and smooth.
02:26But you could try it yourself.
02:27It wouldn't be too much of a problem.
02:29For the stepping stones, I'm using the Shapescaper tree rings.
02:32They're already preformed, and they come in various sizes.
02:34Once I've spaced them out and I know exactly how I want it to look,
02:37we'll fill them up with road base and mesh
02:39before we put some concrete in.
03:00Setting out our stepping stones, you can see we're going to access from the bottom of the stairs
03:04and come around to our shower pad here.
03:07And we're also having another path off into the garden.
03:10Now, we're going to set the levels with our bottom step here.
03:12And that's going to set the levels for all of our pad.
03:15We're also going to be bringing in a screen here to create some privacy.
03:18So these are sort of set out around that screen.
03:20So we've got some nice curves going on.
03:22And the rest will be filled with planting.
03:31I'm using the aggregate in the base because it's nice and stable once it's compacted.
03:36But also because it's much cheaper than concrete.
03:38Once we've got this leveled out and compacted,
03:40we can work out exactly how much concrete we need.
03:42It takes out the guesswork.
03:55Before we lay any concrete, we're going to set our posts out for our screen
04:00because these are going to be concreted in a trench.
04:02But we need to set them out so we can screw them off inside our edging.
04:06That way, they're going to stay nice and straight.
04:07And we're using aluminium over timber because if we use timber,
04:10we're going to have gaps between them.
04:11They're going to warp over time.
04:12It's not going to give us a good finish.
04:13We've got a 90mm spacer, which we've just taped on for the moment.
04:16We'll get this one nice set up and plump.
04:18And we can do the rest after that.
04:31We're just tapping our posts in to give them some security
04:34whilst we go all the way around with the remaining posts.
04:37And you can see where the trench lies.
04:39We're going to fill it in to give us some privacy from the neighbours.
04:42How's that looking?
04:44We'll get all the posts in position and screw them to the edging.
04:48And some reinforcing mesh will make our steppers and shower base as solid as possible.
04:54We're using a regular off-the-shelf concrete,
04:56but I'm treating the top with a concrete retardant.
05:00So that while the rest of the pad will go off in a couple of hours,
05:03the top two or three mils will still be workable.
05:06Which means I can wash it off and expose the aggregate as a design feature.
05:13But now it is time to expose the aggregate and show what's hiding beneath.
05:24And as we're just taking off the top layer of this slab to expose the aggregate,
05:29I can't wait to stick some plants next to these colours and textures.
05:38Our concrete has gone off and I'm really pleased with the way the exposed aggregate has come up.
05:43But now it is time to get on to the plumbing.
05:45So I'm going to let the plumber do the plumbing parts.
05:47We've got plumber Ben, and I'm, being the gardener,
05:49getting it on to the gardening.
05:50Now we're going to have a really nice garden bed down on this side as one zone.
05:53We have the lawn as another zone.
05:55And then around our stepping stones,
05:56I'm going to have a mixture of gravel and pockets of planting.
05:59But to delineate the two, I'm going to use some more shapescaper etching.
06:25Around our stepping stones, I am planting Zoysia tenia folia.
06:29Now this is a great little no-mow grass that forms these mounds.
06:32They're almost like Teletubby mounds.
06:33And I'm not actually going to plant these too high up.
06:35And the reason for that is I really like the combination of the patina on the steel,
06:39the concrete, and the green of the grass.
06:41Once they're in, I'm going to finish this all off with a gravel mulch.
06:59For this long slender bed alongside our shower, I've gone for a bit of height just to balance off our
07:04screen.
07:04Now we've got these lovely slender calatheas, we've got an elephant's ears, and some silver lady ferns as well.
07:09And this is really going to provide a tropical backdrop when you're having a shower to give you that holiday
07:14-from-home feel.
07:27With a garden bed that runs down into the rest of this garden, I've got to tie in what is
07:32a native scheme to one that is a bit more tropical and water-loving towards the top of the hill.
07:36And I'm doing that with the native planting.
07:38We've got some lestringia, some adenanthus, and even a bit of the chocolate coria here.
07:41But the overriding theme is silver because it ties in with what's existing.
07:48And lots of different textures too.
08:07I love the way mulch makes a garden feel finished.
08:10For our native planting area, we're using forest vines.
08:12It suits the style of the planting.
08:13It's going to break down to help improve the soil.
08:15For our stepping stones, we're just using a river gravel.
08:18Now when this is washed up, the tones are going to sit perfectly with the concrete and the steel.
08:22And when it is all finished up, I tell you what, I cannot wait to get in that shower.
08:46Do you like mysteries?
08:49Good.
08:49I've got one for you tonight.
08:51Tonight, it's all about two little dogs, a picket fence, and what's on the other side.
08:57This gem is at the heart of one of the fastest growing property hotspots in the country.
09:01And it's not just all about the charm.
09:14Tonight's house call is just that little bit different.
09:17You see, I'm in a suburban backyard.
09:19And tonight, we're looking at a mystery.
09:22And the mystery's entitled, What is Behind the Garden Wall?
09:27We have two little canine detectives ready to help us.
09:30Together, the three of us will try and come up with a solution.
09:32I'll give you my heart in my precious time.
09:41Hey, mate, how are you going?
09:42Hey, Dr. Harry.
09:43Thanks for coming.
09:44So we've got a problem with two dogs.
09:45We do, we do.
09:46What's the problem?
09:48So I've got two cavoodles, Daisy and Freya.
09:51Daisy's four years old, Freya's two.
09:52Yeah.
09:53They are absolutely obsessed with the back corner of our yard.
09:56They run out here.
09:57They sit there for hours.
09:59Obsessed?
09:59They scratch.
10:00They just, I can't distract them from it.
10:03Okay.
10:03And it's been going on for months now.
10:05And I just don't know what else I can do.
10:07I've tried blocking the area.
10:08I've tried locking them inside.
10:10But it's just becoming a bit of an issue, I think, for us to manage.
10:14Can they get through the fence in any way, shape or form?
10:16No, they've tried digging under.
10:17So I've had to put some bricks along the bottom to stop them digging under the fence.
10:20And I've had to put some mesh on the fence to stop them hurting their paws as well.
10:24Have you looked over the fence?
10:26I have.
10:26There's a pile of firewood on the other side.
10:28So we think there might be something in the wood pile.
10:31Yeah, right.
10:32But we haven't seen anything.
10:33So you've not seen any vermin or anything like that on your side of the fence?
10:36No.
10:37We do have lizards, though, around the yard, like any most suburban homes in this part of Sydney.
10:41Are they interested in them?
10:42Yeah, they are.
10:43They chase them down.
10:44Yeah.
10:45Yeah, they catch them occasionally.
10:46Yep.
10:46Yeah.
10:47Not blue-tongued so much.
10:48Yeah, small lizards.
10:49All right.
10:50Let's go up there and have a bit of a look.
10:51All right.
10:51Sounds good.
10:56Just a lot of big blocks of firewood, more than anything else, are raised in a heap.
11:03Really, it could harbour just about anything.
11:05But as far as I'm concerned, if the dogs are looking at it, then whatever is in there has
11:12to be alive.
11:12Because if we're dead, it would have dissipated a long time ago, and the dogs would have lost
11:17interest.
11:21How long has this been going on for, do you reckon?
11:23About four to six months now.
11:25So a long time.
11:26Well, for my money, that eliminates any sort of dead animal being there, because it would
11:31have decomposed, and the dogs would have lost interest, the smell would have gone, all that
11:35sort of thing.
11:35But the fact that the interest is still there, the fact that the interest is more active at
11:40night time, right, suggests that there's something alive in that heap of timber.
11:46So I'm thinking rodents.
11:47Rats are nice, more than anything else.
11:49But add on top of that the possibility of lizards and snakes.
11:53Particularly if you've got rodents, you're going to have snakes.
11:55We could have all four.
11:57How would we know?
11:58Well, the only real way to know is to go and have a look.
12:03So we're going to pop in next door.
12:05We've got the owner's permission to check out this wood pile.
12:13Well, there's no doubt they're riding onto something, aren't they?
12:16Look at the activity.
12:17Tails are wagging, exploring all the little crevices.
12:20This is part of a hunting instinct.
12:22This is normal in all dogs.
12:24It's called prey drive.
12:25They need to get out, catch something, kill it, and eat it.
12:28And even though they may be just pet dogs, they still have this in their DNA.
12:33So there's something in there that these dogs would like to get hold of.
12:37So what I'll try and do is see if I can see some fecal material.
12:41In other words, some droppings, if you like, manure.
12:43Might give us a clue as to what's in there.
12:49So I haven't found any droppings of any description at all.
12:53And there's no real smell.
12:56I mean, you smell that, just an earthy smell.
12:58I think if there were rodents there, you'd smell urine and one thing and another.
13:02And there isn't.
13:03There's just that sort of earthy smell, right?
13:05Yeah.
13:05So I think my deduction would be that there's probably a lizard in there more than anything.
13:09Maybe a blue tongue.
13:10Yeah, OK.
13:11Possibly a snake, but probably a blue tongue more than anything else.
13:14I mean, it's an ideal hide for them.
13:15You can't do anything on this side of the fence because this is the neighbour's place.
13:20We have to do something on your side of the fence to ensure the safety of your dogs.
13:26That's what it's all about.
13:27OK?
13:28OK.
13:28So the way in which you solve problems like this is to deny access.
13:33OK.
13:33That's my job.
13:34OK.
13:35We'll go next door and we'll deny access.
13:37Sounds good.
13:46So what do we do?
13:47Well, you would need to be the world's best dog trainer to break a habit that is normal,
13:55that is part of the dog's behaviour.
13:57Prey drive.
13:58And this is prey drive.
13:59So how do you do that?
14:01If you can't train the problem, then you have to prevent access.
14:05Safest way?
14:06Electricity.
14:07So a little electric fence that's about so high runs right along your wooden perimeter
14:12right through to the back fence there.
14:14OK.
14:15You've got a little charger, you know, solar-operated gizmo up here.
14:20You've got your battery down there.
14:21You've got plenty of sunshine around here.
14:22No problem.
14:23Puts out plenty of volts.
14:25No, it doesn't.
14:26Puts out plenty of amps, but low volts, right?
14:28Right.
14:28So they touch it once or twice, they've got a nice wet nose, they don't like it, and
14:33they never go near it again.
14:35That's going to keep them away from the area and going to keep them safe.
14:38You cannot change what's happening next door, but you can make sure your dogs don't come
14:44into any danger on your side of the fence, and that's the best way of doing it.
14:49Deny access.
14:50However, I wouldn't feel right going home, having taken away something the dogs love and
14:56not giving something back.
14:58So I'd like to give something back, and that's going to be a sand pit.
15:02OK.
15:02So think where you would like to put a big plastic shell, into which we can put some
15:06sand, into which you can put some toys, into which you can put some treats, and that provides
15:11a replacement therapy.
15:21This is my little present, and we bake this with lots of little food rewards.
15:26So these are little tiny pork strips, which we absolutely love, and the idea is to just
15:33bury them very lightly in the sand.
15:34Initially, when you're first doing it, just throw them on the surface.
15:38I've got one very willing participant and one not quite so sure, but as time goes, there'll
15:45be competition.
15:46Make them small to start off with, so the dog has to really look for them, because this
15:50is a natural hunting drive too, going, looking for food, digging.
15:54Dogs have been digging for as long as they've been dogs, so it's very good therapy for them
15:59to have to dig to retrieve food.
16:01You can substitute other stuff, cheese, cavernosi, that sort of thing.
16:05I have something to say, as has anyone who's ever made, anything worth enjoying, nobody
16:13can destroy it, left unchecked it.
16:15My aim is to have two satisfied dogs, and one very satisfied owner, and I think we've
16:22done that.
16:26These magnificent girls are the powerhouses behind a fabulous family micro-dairy farm,
16:31and you might be surprised exactly where it is.
16:34Add some unique pieces around your home using a very familiar technique.
16:40The main issue of Bitter Homes and Gardens magazine is celebrating gorgeous Australian
16:45plants and backyards.
16:46Check out dwarf varieties of gum trees, perfect for smaller gardens.
16:50And round up native alternatives to garden classics, from frangipani and fuchsia to hydrangea.
16:56I'll also give you tips on growing figs, and Charlie troubleshoots problems with lemon trees.
17:03Get in quick to buy your tickets to the Creator Awards announcement in May.
17:08Pick up the May issue of the Bitter Homes and Gardens magazine from your local newsagent,
17:12and get a bonus pair of gorgeous gardening gloves.
17:36You may have noticed that there is a huge shift reshaping our cities from the inside out.
17:41As home buyers try to avoid sky-high mortgages, and instead choose somewhere that has more
17:47charm, space and affordability on the urban fringe.
17:50That means that once remote towns like Camden are now at the heart of one of the biggest
17:55growth corridors in the country.
18:02So this is the centre of Sydney's historic MacArthur region.
18:06It sits right in the fringes of the city's south-west housing expansion, but it's somewhere
18:11you can come to soak up yesteryear.
18:13In its day, Camden was the hub of Australia's early wool, wine and dairy industries, and on
18:19the main route to Melbourne.
18:21These days, this buzzing town is just a fantastic day out.
18:24You can enjoy the late colonial architecture, not to mention the numerous shops, boutiques,
18:30restaurants and cafes.
18:36So to find out why everyone's making the move, I'm going to catch up with a couple of locals.
18:41First up, a dynamic mother and daughter duo who have lovingly restored this 1896 landmark
18:47into a highly successful tea house.
18:50You're too scared to talk to your family.
18:54I have my opinions.
18:57It doesn't matter what I think.
19:00I was there when two brothers were...
19:03Here they are.
19:04Hi!
19:04Hello, Jacinta.
19:05Hello, Natasha.
19:05I love it to meet you both.
19:06I love it to meet you.
19:07I love what you've done here.
19:08This is so exquisite.
19:10Tell me about this beautiful building.
19:12This is our beautiful tea house, and we brought it six years ago in 2019.
19:17It didn't look like this, though, did it?
19:18No.
19:19A lot of renovation, a lot of hard work, but yeah, we had a lot of fun doing it.
19:23I think that's the sense that you get when you walk in here.
19:25I mean, you'd love to be in this space, because every room is different, but you just feel
19:28like you're, I don't know, you've headed off to some little wonderland.
19:31You'll be both born and bred here.
19:32So tell me about why you think this part of the world is absolutely going off.
19:36Yeah, so I did, after, you know, finishing school, I did go to the city, but then there's
19:42nothing like...
19:42It drew you back.
19:43It drew me back to my hometown.
19:46We both ride westerns, so we do horse riding on the weekends, so we are able to go ride our
19:50horses throughout the afternoons, throughout the day, and then also work, and then our
19:54partners can go to the city and work in the city.
19:57So we've got, we're in the middle of being able to have a country life, but also work in
20:01the city.
20:02It's an absolutely beautiful town itself, isn't it?
20:05I mean, you would have noticed some big changes over time.
20:07Oh, it has, but still has the heritage vibe, which I think is one of the things that's
20:11so beautiful to Camden.
20:13And just down the road at Oran Park, you couldn't get more of a contrast to the heritage architecture.
20:19These modern homes are perfect for families drawn to the country slash city lifestyle.
20:25Well, Shannon, you've certainly picked one of the paciest areas in real estate just about
20:28in the country at the moment.
20:29Tell us about this part of the world and what's going on.
20:31Oran Park's one of the biggest growing suburbs in all of Sydney.
20:34A lot of people are coming here from out of area just due to affordability.
20:37It's a great place to raise a family.
20:39Basically, it's got every amenity at your footstep.
20:42Do people then get surprised by how much is on offer?
20:44Look, they do.
20:45It is a master plan suburb, and they're thinking years ahead as well.
20:48There's about 4,000 or 5,000 homes to come over the next few years.
20:51You've got your bus stops.
20:52You've got local train stations.
20:54You've got a train station that is going to be coming to Oran Park in the near future.
20:58And then you've got, obviously, the airport that is to come.
21:01The airport's been the game changer, really, hasn't it?
21:03It is.
21:03It is.
21:04The amount of infrastructure that has come to the area, given that the airport is coming,
21:08but just jobs to come in the area.
21:11It's just everything is going to be built around the second Sydney International Airport.
21:14Also, people get a lot of bang for their buck out here, don't they?
21:16They do.
21:17When you look at affordability over Sydney and what that buys you in this area, it's apples and oranges.
21:27So, here we are.
21:28This is a brand-new, luxury, custom-built home in here in Oran Park.
21:32So, why don't you come inside and take a look?
21:33Definitely.
21:34Lead the way.
21:34Beautiful.
21:39Wow.
21:39There's a lot of house.
21:41It's a beautiful house.
21:42So, this is a custom-built by Camelot Homes.
21:45They're a premium builder in the area.
21:47You can tell.
21:47So, this particular house is five-bed, three-bath, single car.
21:50Yep.
21:51It's brand-new.
21:52We're guiding 1.45 to 1.55.
21:54Okay.
21:55So, what's your starting entry point for people, though?
21:57Because, I mean, you literally have the whole gamut, don't you?
22:00You do.
22:01You've got your entry-level two-bedroom homes, Fonzie Flats.
22:03They start at the $6 to $6.50.
22:05Then, you've got your free-standing, three-bed, two-bath, one-car homes.
22:08They're around that $9.50, which is great for first-home buyers, investors, downsizers of the likes.
22:14The middle market, you're looking at around the $1.2 to $1.4, which buys you a nice big single
22:19-story home in the double market as well.
22:21So, it sounds like people come with a very clear idea for what they're looking for out here.
22:25They do.
22:25They do.
22:26And moving from out of area, they want the dream.
22:28They want the bigger backyards.
22:29They want the space.
22:30You would not get that value for money anywhere else in Sydney.
22:33No, you wouldn't.
22:34Affordability from where you can buy in the city to brand-new homes out here, there's so much growth.
22:38Look, one of the great things for us, I suppose, when you use the view.com.au app, you literally
22:42can go on.
22:43The more information that you have, whether it's on the webpage or the app, the more information that you've actually
22:48got,
22:49it obviously gives them an idea with that purchasing power calculator exactly what you can get for your budget.
22:54100%.
22:54You can be very specific down to bedrooms, bathrooms, how many car garages that you do want,
22:59the price guide that you're looking for, and the block size, and whether you're after a terrace, townhouse, freestanding, the
23:04works.
23:05It's all on ready.
23:12Ah, see?
23:13Yet another amazing contrast, but that's the beauty of what this part of the world throws up.
23:17Jess, Luke, absolute pleasure to meet you both.
23:19Of course.
23:19The famous Camden Valley Farm.
23:21I can't wait to hear what you guys are keeping busy with.
23:23Hey, Joanna.
23:24Great to meet you, too.
23:24Let's go and meet the herd.
23:25Beautiful.
23:26I feel like I'm one of the herd.
23:27Move.
23:28Move.
23:30I just love the way you've got me feeling.
23:33Love the feeling.
23:37So tell me about your property.
23:39Tell me about the farm.
23:40So we've been here since 2011.
23:42We're on 30 acres.
23:43We milk about 40 cows at any time.
23:45You sort of grew up around this part of the world, didn't you?
23:47Yes.
23:47I grew up at Brincelli.
23:48So do you, I mean, what do you love about this area?
23:51You're far enough out of the city that you don't have people walking past your back door all the time.
23:55But you're close enough to Sydney that we can duck in for the day.
23:58Yeah.
23:59So you've got the best of both worlds.
24:00And you guys do that regularly, don't you, with your markets?
24:02Yeah.
24:02Yeah, so we're in there once a week.
24:04And I believe you've got a little farm gate as well.
24:06Yes, we do out the front there.
24:08So we sell our milk, yoghurt and some of our flavoured milks as well in there.
24:11Well, you know that we're definitely going to have to go check it out.
24:13But I think that's coming up a little bit later in the show.
24:15Absolutely.
24:17Juliette's making a mess with paper mache.
24:20It's an easy and affordable way to express your creative side.
24:26And looking for something simple yet saucy tonight?
24:29I got you sorted.
24:32Look at that.
24:34On the May issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, it's all about the best of Australia.
24:38There are instructions from our nifty chopping board made of dense Australian hardwood.
24:43And Geneva van der Zijl takes board games to the great outdoors with her giant DIY checkers set.
24:50Getting quick to buy your tickets to the Creator Awards announcement in May.
24:55Pick up the May issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine at your local newsagents
25:00and get a bonus pair of durable gardening gloves.
25:05So much better.
25:09I have so many happy memories of getting crafty as a kid.
25:12I had so much fun getting messy.
25:15And during that creative process, I worked out what I wanted to do for a living as an adult,
25:19which was a massive bonus.
25:21But one of my favourite memories of creating things as a kid was using paper mache.
25:26And did you know you can use the same technique to create some really beautiful decorative objects
25:31for your home?
25:32And you only need things that you probably already have in your own cupboard.
25:41First up, you'll need a balloon and some pegs on the bottom to hold it down in a dish just
25:48like that.
25:49I'm sure once I keep going, you'll recognise this process.
25:52The next thing you need are some torn up pieces of paper towel,
25:56some PVA glue and water.
25:58And the ratio of glue to water is one part glue to two parts water.
26:23One method you can use to apply the glue is to soak the pieces of paper in there.
26:28But I find it much easier to use a brush.
26:31You have greater control.
26:33And smaller pieces of paper I find much easier to layer on.
26:53So that is layer one done.
26:56I just need to add another layer and then I'm going to show you something really special.
27:07Okay, layer two is done and I promised you something special and that is I'm going to
27:12put dried flowers in between the next layer.
27:15And I've dried them just using the microwave.
27:17It's very simple.
27:17You want to place the flowers or leaves between two pieces of paper towel and then put a dish
27:23on the top of that.
27:24And so that you don't burn them, I would suggest doing it in 30-second increments.
27:28And this one might take about a minute and a half in total.
27:32And you want to just work out where you're going to place your flowers or leaves.
27:35So I'm going to put my first one here, another piece of paper towel over the top and then
27:41your glue solution over that.
27:58Okay, so you want to make sure that you cover over all those little stems and leaves.
28:03Once that's done, you can set your lantern aside to dry.
28:06It'll take about 24 hours depending on how warm the weather is.
28:11Now, lampshades are such a great way to update your decor because they're so affordable.
28:16This one is just off the shelf.
28:17It's a white one.
28:18And I've given it two layers of that same paper with the glue.
28:22And then I'm going to add these beautiful little fern leaves.
28:27I've dried them out in the microwave like I did with the lavender.
28:30And I'm going to just place them on like that.
28:33And ferns in decor are such a timeless decorative style.
28:36Giving your love, keep giving your love, never giving you all.
28:40Oh, keep giving your love, keep giving your love.
28:43But don't go away from me.
28:45I'll be there when you lose yourself to remind you all you are.
28:52Giving your love, keep giving your love, keep giving your love.
28:54And that's it.
28:54How beautiful.
28:56I've used a matte finishing spray just to seal it.
28:59And with this little guy, we just need to cut the balloon before I can place a flameless candle inside.
29:06It's going to be so pretty.
29:11Oh, how gorgeous is that?
29:13There is something very classic and timeless about these.
29:17But they also feel quite modern.
29:18They'd sit beautifully in any home.
29:23You can see why we all loved this as kids.
29:26It's an easy and affordable way to express your creative side.
29:30But it's not just for little kids.
29:32For adults too, it's a beautiful way to decorate your home.

31:39So much better.
31:42Alright, it's midweek.
31:44Let's say it's Wednesday.
31:45You've been busy all week.
31:47The kids want dessert.
31:48You haven't got time.
31:49No, you do.
31:50Because I've got a dessert that's going to take you ten minutes from start to finish
31:54and I'm going to make you a hero.
31:56Let's go.
31:57The dessert I'm going to make is an old-fashioned steam pudding.
32:03But my little twist on it is I do it in the microwave.
32:06That's what gives us the speed.
32:08You can steam it if you want.
32:10It's Wednesday night.
32:11We're busy.
32:12Let's go.
32:13Right.
32:13There's two parts to this dish.
32:15There's a wet part and a dry part.
32:18So the wet part is 150 ml of milk, full cream.
32:24That goes in.
32:27One whole egg.
32:30That goes in.
32:34And I'm going to spice it.
32:36So I'm going to use a teaspoon of nutmeg,
32:40a teaspoon of cinnamon,
32:41and a half teaspoon of ginger powder.
32:44So I'm going to put that half in.
32:47Give that a whisk.
32:53All right.
32:54Next up,
32:56a little bit of orange zest
32:58and a little bit of orange juice,
32:59which is going to give you a bit of sweetness.
33:01So outside your skin.
33:03Right.
33:06A bit of juice.
33:08Juice.
33:14We're going to add 75 grams of muscovada sugar.
33:17So when it melts,
33:18it sort of gets really moorish
33:20and it thickens a bit.
33:21So try that in there.
33:2375.
33:25I've got a teaspoon of vanilla essence
33:27or fresh vanilla if you've got it.
33:37Now we add our dry ingredients.
33:39So I've got 175 grams of plain flour.
33:45So that goes in.
33:47I've got my baking powder.
33:51Teaspoon.
33:54I've got 75 grams of suet.
33:58Now suet adds a little bit of fat to the recipe.
34:01If you don't want suet,
34:01you can dice in the same amount of ice cold butter.
34:05So that goes in.
34:07That's going to give you a nice creamy texture.
34:10Pinch of salt.
34:14Give it a good whisk.
34:20All right.
34:20So that's basically our batter mix done.
34:23Next up, we've got a pudding bowl.
34:25So what you want to do
34:26is you want to butter to the sides
34:27so your mixture doesn't stick when you cook it.
34:31So I chill the bowl
34:32so the butter will stick to it.
34:40And just to make extra sure it doesn't stick,
34:43I put a little bit of paper,
34:44like a little hat on the bottom.
34:45So basically what I do is
34:47a sheet of paper,
34:48fold over once,
34:50fold over twice,
34:52and then
34:54you just work the corner.
34:57So you've got that.
34:59You measure that across your bowl,
35:01and then you tear it.
35:04And that should give you a circle.
35:08It's like play school.
35:11So that goes in.
35:16Give that a little bit of butter.
35:25All right.
35:28So that's what we're looking at.
35:30That's about as hard as this recipe gets,
35:32is making the little paper round.
35:35Got some golden syrup,
35:37like about 100, 150 mils,
35:38enough to coat and enough left to sauce.
35:41So what you do is
35:42you pour it round the side of the bowl
35:45and in the bottom.
35:47So what happens is
35:49when this hits the heat,
35:51the golden syrup is going to caramelise
35:53around your pudding.
35:54So you work quickly now.
35:56we're going to pour in our pudding mix.
36:01So just fill it nearly to the top.
36:06All right.
36:07So that's our pudding.
36:09All right.
36:09Got my lid.
36:10Just wet it a little bit
36:11so it sticks.
36:14I drape that over the bowl.
36:17Got some twine.
36:21And then just do a double nut.
36:25There you go.
36:28All right.
36:29So that's it.
36:30Going in the microwave for five minutes.
36:36All right.
36:37Five minutes.
36:38While it's in the microwave,
36:39we've just enough time
36:40to make a sauce, caramel.
36:42So we get our pan hot.
36:44I've got 150 grams
36:46of a malt extract.
36:49If you don't have malt extract,
36:50you can just use golden syrup.
36:52So 150 in the pan.
36:55Just going to let that melt.
36:57Let it bubble.
36:59All right.
37:00So it's starting just to loosen up.
37:02Bubble.
37:02You don't want to reduce it.
37:03You just want to get it hot enough
37:04that when you add 25 grams
37:06of cold butter,
37:07it's going to turn into a caramel sauce.
37:1830 seconds left on the clock.
37:20We've got the pudding ready to go.
37:21We've got the sauce.
37:25And bang.
37:26Done.
37:26That's it.
37:27Right.
37:28Do not put your finger in this yet.
37:30Let it cool.
37:30Get the pudding out.
37:38All right.
37:39Take my string off.
37:41So the lid sort of keeps all that steam in
37:43and helps you cook it.
37:47Oh.
37:54This could end in disaster.
37:57You've been waiting for it.
37:58I know you've been waiting for it,
37:59but let's see.
38:00All right.
38:00You ready?
38:07Oh.
38:09Not this time.
38:12So we just take our little lid off.
38:16Oh.
38:20So what happens is
38:22all that golden syrup is caramelized
38:25and it sort of cooks a little bit
38:26into your pudding.
38:27So it's still nice and soft,
38:29nice and spongy.
38:32We've got our warm caramel.
38:44We've got our warm caramel.
39:00This one's got to be hot.
39:00Hang on.
39:04Mmm.
39:06Oh.
39:08Good.
39:18Well, I've had a great day checking out Camden
39:20and its local surrounds,
39:21but nothing has been more fun
39:23than catching up with Jess and Luke
39:24at Camden Valley Farm.
39:26You guys have a micro dairy
39:27and you also have this incredible
39:29little shop front.
39:30Yeah, we do, Jo.
39:31So in our shop here,
39:32we sell our plain milk
39:33as well as our flavoured milks.
39:34We've got chocolate,

39:36and we've got our pot set yoghurt
39:38and our little Jersey jelly as well.
39:39Mate, that's a lot of produce
39:40to come out of this.
39:41I'm interested to know,
39:42how much milk are you getting each day?
39:43We produce about 800 litres a day
39:45and about half of it gets sold
39:46through the farm shop.
39:47Wow.
39:47I'll tell you what,
39:48it's definitely worth a trip out here.
39:49So I've heard,
39:50I mean, I'd love to try our product
39:52if I could.
39:52We do have some here.
39:53Oh, wow.
39:55Try the strawberry milk.
39:56All right, let's have a taste.
39:58Mmm.
40:00That is outstanding.
40:01You guys are obviously
40:02onto something pretty damn impressive.
40:04Thank you for showing us around.
40:05We hope you've enjoyed
40:06having a look as well.
