Wonder 2017

00:00He was filming his wife giving birth with a video camera, but as soon as the baby was born,
00:04the male nurse assisting for the first time was so shocked he froze. A female nurse nearby quickly
00:08took the baby and ran to find a doctor to save his life. After 27 consecutive surgeries, the child
00:13survived. And so, 10 years passed. The boy looked like any other child on the outside, but insecurity
00:18was always by his side. A congenital genetic condition called Treacher Collins Syndrome became
00:22a lifelong burden. The doctors had done their best to get him to where he was today. The boy's name
00:26was Auggie. Because of his congenital defect, his mother gave up graduate school and a job,
00:30and set up a special classroom at home for Auggie. But as Auggie grew older, his mother worried that
00:34being isolated from society for so long, would make it impossible for him to communicate with
00:39others in the future. So she decided to send him to school. On the first day of school, Auggie walked
00:43to the school gate wearing his helmet, accompanied by his entire family. His family members pretended
00:47to be relaxed and encouraged him. His father carefully removed his helmet, watching his son's
00:51small, receding figure. His parents' eyes were filled with barely concealed worry. They silently prayed
00:56that the other children would be kind to him. But children's cruelty is often more direct.
01:00The moment Auggie appeared at the classroom door, the lively room fell silent. Everyone stared at
01:04this new monster. One classmate even refused to let him sit in front of him. During class,
01:08the teacher encouraged Auggie with her eyes to introduce himself. Auggie had no choice but to
01:11stand up. He said his favorite movie was Star Wars. Julian, a boy in the class, immediately mocked Auggie,
01:17saying his appearance was just like those disgusting monsters in the movie. Auggie silently endured his
01:21classmate's laughter. But all that did was make the bullying worse. In gym class, Julian and his group
01:25used playing ball as an excuse to deliberately hit Auggie. After school, they surrounded him,
01:30calling him ugly, and mocking his little braid as being old-fashioned. When his mother came to pick
01:34him up, Auggie didn't respond to her concern. He silently put on his helmet. When he got home,
01:38he grabbed a pair of scissors and cut off the little braid he had grown for two years. Then he
01:42put his
01:42helmet back on, shut himself off, and refused to communicate with anyone. That night, with his
01:47mother's persuasion, Auggie finally took off his helmet. His mother patiently told him,
01:59it's precisely because I'm your mother that I know you better. You're not ugly at all. Those
02:03who truly want to know you, will realize that sooner or later. But Auggie still couldn't get
02:07over the scars on his face. His mother said she couldn't predict the future. But she knew that
02:15everyone in the world has marks on their face. When you had your first surgery, I got wrinkles
02:19around my eyes. When you had your last surgery, I got wrinkles on my forehead. The map of the soul
02:23guides the direction of life. But the map of the face records the path we have walked. That's the
02:27story time has left on your face. How could that be ugly? Her mother's guidance gave Auggie the strength
02:31to face his classmates again. In science class that day, the teacher announced a pop quiz. The classroom
02:36erupted in groans. Only Auggie finished the paper quickly. Seeing that his deskmate, Jack, couldn't
02:40write a single answer. Auggie quietly moved his paper to the corner of the desk. So Jack could copy
02:45his answers. At lunch, Jack expressed his gratitude to Auggie. And voluntarily sat with Auggie. He was
02:49the first person in the entire school to do so. Jack told Auggie that he had intentionally copied a few
02:54answers wrong. So the teacher wouldn't notice. Seeing that Jack was struggling with chemistry, Auggie invited
02:59Jack to study at his house. Jack was very grateful. And so, Auggie had his first real friend. He had
03:03never
03:04been so happy. After school, Auggie brought Jack home. Seeing that Auggie had made a friend. His
03:08mother was so moved she choked up. And so, the house became livelier. Auggie and Jack grew close,
03:13becoming best friends who told each other everything. Because of Auggie's physical defects,
03:16his mother poured all her energy into her son. Often neglecting his daughter, Via. Ever since Auggie was
03:21born, he had become the son of the family. His father, mother, and she herself became the planets
03:26revolving around that sun. Via loved her brother and had grown accustomed to this dynamic. She never bothered
03:31her parents with her own problems. But being well behaved didn't mean she didn't need love.
03:34Whenever her parents neglected her and made her feel down, she would go to the beach to remember
03:38her grandmother, who had loved her the most. Only her grandmother was willing to give her more love.
03:43That day, Via stayed at the beach until very late before coming home. When she learned that Via had
03:46gone to the beach where she had last talked with her grandmother, her mother was a little surprised.
03:50She immediately realized that she had been neglecting her daughter too much, to cheer Via up.
03:55Her mother decided to spend Halloween with her the next day. Via was overjoyed. She hadn't spent time
03:59alone with her mother in so long. But on Halloween, something happened with Auggie again.
04:03That morning, he excitedly went to the classroom wearing a ghost mask to find Jack. But he heard
04:07Jack talking to Julian, saying bad things about him. If I look like him, I think I kill myself.
04:12But he only hung out with Auggie because the principal asked him to. These words of betrayal
04:16broke Auggie's heart. He ran home in despair, crying against his bed, wanting to put on his helmet.
04:21His mother couldn't find the helmet anywhere, and had to call her husband to help. When Via heard
04:25that her brother wouldn't even go out to get candy, she looked at his closed door, and let it go.
04:29So what if she got a little less love? Someone else needed it more. The older sister,
04:32who was really too old for trick-or-treating anymore, put on a costume that no longer fit.
04:36After learning what had happened to her brother, she went to Auggie's site to comfort him.
04:40She told him that her friend had recently stopped talking to her for no reason too.
04:43Why? Because school sucks, and people change. So if you want to be a normal kid Auggie then,
04:51those are the rules. So, let's go trick-or-treating.
04:54And so, Auggie recovered. His experience wasn't so different from anyone else's. Everyone has a
04:59choice when it comes to friendship. After that, Auggie stopped talking to Jack voluntarily,
05:03and stopped eating with him. Jack was at a loss. Although the principal had asked him to look
05:07after Auggie, in the process of spending time with him, he had come to appreciate Auggie's
05:11sincerity and intelligence. Now he genuinely wanted to be friends with Auggie. But Jack didn't know,
05:16that the words he had said to save face that day, had already damaged their friendship.
05:19Later, Julian tried to get Jack to rejoin their group. But every day, listening to them arrogantly
05:23insult others, Jack grew disgusted. People with that kind of negative energy were not the friends
05:28he wanted. During this time, a girl in the class voluntarily sat across from Auggie. She had once
05:32recited a saying in class, if you have to choose between being right and being kind, choose kind.
05:36Now, this girl was putting that saying into practice. Watching Auggie interact with the girl,
05:40Jack felt terrible. He went to ask the girl why Auggie had suddenly stopped talking to him.
05:44Ghost face.
05:45Jack suddenly realized, that the person wearing the ghost mask on Halloween had been Auggie. And
05:50the hurtful words he had said out of vanity must have made Auggie very sad. Jack felt guilty.
05:54When it was time to form groups for science class, he voluntarily turned down Julian's invitation,
05:58and asked to be in the same group as Auggie. After class, Julian confronted Jack, asking why he
06:03wanted to play with that freak. Without a word, Jack, threw a punch at him. Even if it meant risking
06:07expulsion, for Auggie, and to defend their friendship, Jack was willing to do it. When the teacher
06:11pulled them apart, Jack was overcome with sadness, and cried into the teacher's arms. He was afraid
06:16of being punished, but even more afraid of losing Auggie as a friend. Auggie saw all of this. Later,
06:20Jack sincerely apologized to Auggie through a game character, and salvaged their friendship.
06:24They also worked together on their science project, and received praise from their classmates. The
06:28teacher specially awarded them a medal. Julian, who had been upstaged, was extremely jealous. One day,
06:33Julian handed Auggie a note before class. On it was drawn a monster. Clearly, this was an insult and a
06:38provocation. After class, the other students were gathered around Auggie's locker. Seeing him coming,
06:43they quickly dispersed. Auggie saw a class phototaped to the locker door. He had been edited
06:46out of it, and next to it was written freaks don't come in. A passing teacher saw the scene,
06:51but Auggie didn't tattle. He just shook his head and walked away. The teacher then noticed a student
06:55hiding in the corner. He was one of Julian's group. The teacher asked him what was going on. The boy
06:59nodded shamefacedly and confessed everything, and so, Julian's bullying was exposed throughout the
07:03school. The principal called in his parents, but Julian's mother acted superior, not thinking her
07:08son had done anything wrong at all. So the principal showed them what was written on the back of the
07:12class photo, and displayed, one by one, the notes Julian had used to bully Auggie. Some had cruel
07:16words. Some had ugly faces. Julian had put them in Auggie's desk, his locker, and his chair. School
07:21bullying is one of the worst behaviors. According to school rules, Julian was to be suspended for two
07:26days, but his mother argued that it was because Auggie was so ugly, and her son had nightmares every
07:30night. Besides, they had donated a lot of money to the school. The school should expel Auggie instead.
07:34His father also threatened the principal, saying he had many friends on the school board. The
07:39principal smiled and said he had even more friends. So what would you help us do? Bend over backwards
07:43for every single person in the world? The principal said Auggie couldn't change his appearance, but we
07:48could change the way we look at him. In the end, Julian's parents chose to transfer him to another
07:52school. They didn't care whether their son liked the school or not. Before leaving, Julian turned around
07:56and said sorry to the principal. Perhaps from this moment on, Julian learned to see things from a
08:01different perspective. That day, the school organized a camp activity. Auggie and Jack snuck
08:05off to explore the forest, and encountered a group of middle schoolers. When they saw Auggie,
08:09they immediately started calling him all sorts of vicious names, and even tried to touch his face.
08:13Jack stepped in to stop them, but was pushed to the ground and hit his head. Auggie quickly stood in
08:17front of Jack, raising his fist to protect his friend. He didn't back down even when the middle
08:21schoolers threatened him, but they used their height advantage to push him down anyway. Luckily,
08:25their classmates showed up just in time. These were the same kids who had followed Julian and bullied
08:29Auggie before, but now they were willing to stand up and fight the middle schoolers to protect Auggie.
08:33With their numbers, they beat the two middle schoolers to the ground, and then escaped the
08:36forest. When the danger was over, they exchanged smiles. The lead classmate greeted Auggie voluntarily,
08:41and said the way he had stood up for his friend was cool. Auggie fist bumped him, and suddenly burst
08:45into tears. He felt, for the first time, what it was like to truly fit in, and it was wonderful.
08:50He walked to the lake, and his classmates came to his side. Their company was the greatest comfort
08:54and support. Before the graduation ceremony, his father finally admitted that he was the one who had
08:58hidden Auggie's astronaut helmet in his study. He hoped his son wouldn't be angry.
09:02You were wearing it all the time. I never got to see you anymore. I know you don't always like
09:08it,
09:08but I love it. It's my son's face. I want to see it. His father offered to get the helmet
09:15back,
09:15but Auggie refused, because now, he no longer needed a helmet to hide behind. At the graduation
09:20ceremony, Auggie quietly thanked his mother for deciding to send him to school. Although he had faced
09:24many difficulties and setbacks, he was truly happy now. At the end of each semester,
09:28the principal, by tradition, awarded a medal to the most outstanding graduate, to encourage those
09:32who had helped others. But this year was special. He gave the award to Auggie. Because of his kindness
09:37and perseverance, he had subtly changed many people, prompting them to develop in the right
09:41direction. Amid everyone's cheers, Auggie strode to the stage, enjoying the recognition of everyone
09:45there. Those who love you will love you no matter what. Those who hate you, no matter how much you
09:49try
09:50to please them, will still hate you. Being your truest self is actually a way of filtering out those
09:54who are willing to accept and approach you.
