00:40Our counterterrorism policing teams have already formally declared this incident as a terrorist attack.
00:46It's another horrendous act of violence directed against our Jewish communities,
00:51which follows a series of arson attacks in recent weeks.
00:54My first thoughts are with the two British Jews who were attacked whilst going about their daily lives,
01:00which they should be able to do freely and safely in their own local community.
01:05And they are now taken to hospital.
01:07The 45 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder
01:10and remains in custody following a checkup at the local hospital.
01:15He has a history of serious violence and mental health issues.
01:19And that investigation continues.
01:30This is an awful attack today.
01:34It is completely understandable why Jewish Londoners feel afraid.
01:39That's why we're putting so much extra policing into these events.
01:42And we're going to be looking at what more we can do over 4-3 weeks.
01:45You've lost their faith!
01:46Well, the government is taking action in relation to security, cohesion, extremism.
01:53But of course, it's our responsibility to coordinate the immediate response here to this appalling attack,
02:02to ensure security is in place, to take other measures.
02:06I'm holding a meeting tomorrow with the criminal justice agencies
02:10to make sure that we can have effective and swift justice in these cases.
02:15But we do have to recognise the levels of anxiety and concern there are that I know about
02:22in terms of the Jewish community feeling very much exposed and vulnerable,
02:28feeling they've got to hide their identity sometimes in the health service,
02:32sometimes at school, on the streets where they live.
02:39What transpired was he came outside the synagogue of Hager's on Highfield Ammonia
02:44and he started stabbing someone outside there, then went on down Gold's Green Road
02:49and he continued stabbing an elderly gentleman, visibly Jewish,
02:53and he went after him, pushed him over and started stabbing him repeatedly.
02:57We haven't gone over yet from the previous incident, and this has happened.
03:01And we've had small incidents in the past 3-4 weeks or so, targeting synagogues and community centres.
03:06It's just one after another. And we're just crying out to the government,
03:10just listen to us, feel our pain of the community, what's going on.
03:14How much more can we take?
03:15The message to government has been very consistent for a sustained period of time now.
03:22The message to government is that we have to deal with the root cause
03:26and we have to see that there are consequences to anti-Semitism.
03:30We don't know much more at this point about the motives behind these attacks,
03:35but if they are following a pattern, then we do know that, again,
03:40extremism has come onto the streets of Britain.
03:43It has struck the heart of the Jewish community again,
03:47and we have to root out the ability for extremists to threaten British society
03:54and British values in this way.
