00:00Well, hanging onto the doors for Mumbai locals may soon be a dream of a past.
00:04It's because Mumbai locals are getting closed doors, but without ease.
00:08The idea is to prevent deadly falls.
00:12But in Mumbai, it's relentless to heal.
00:17Can't the people survive the right?
00:27It's just like for chickens inside the cabinet ready to be slaughtered.
00:33Used by millions of people daily, these locals are the lifeline of the financial capital.
00:38But overcrowding can be ready.
00:40Between 2014 and May 2025, over 6,700 commuters died after falling of overcrowded non-AC trains
00:46and more than 14,000 were injured.
00:49Almost all of these deaths happened in trains with open doors.
00:52In contrast, AC locals with automatic closed doors have recorded zero fall-off deaths.
00:57Right now, AC locals are using up just a fraction of the voice train services and they are expensive.
01:02A church gate to Virajo only costs around 20 in a regular train, but jumps to over 100 rupees in
01:08an AC local.
01:09But these new closed door locals built by Integral Coach Factory come with closed doors and louvre panels for airflow.
01:15But will ventilation be enough when these trains are packed to capacity?
01:19In earlier drawers, the carbon dioxide levels inside closed porches rose sharply, raising concerns about justification during PCOS.
01:26Now the railway says the designs have been abused.
01:28This time we have undertaken the entire overhaul of the design, maybe provision of additional ventilators.
01:38Second, we have provided added vestibule intersections so that the passengers or the rush can be equally distributed, evenly distributed
01:50across the porches.
01:51We have also provided increased size of the windows, which will definitely improve the ventilation system.
02:00So why not just expand the metro instead?
02:02Well, Mumbai has over 80 kilometers of metro lines, but the ridership is low.
02:06High ticket costs, poor last mile connectivity and fragmented management have slowed the impact.
02:10Which has led to this experiment of closed doors in non-AC locals.
02:15These AC rates are currently undergoing trials and it may take around three more months before a public rollout.
02:20If successful, Mumbai could see more automatic non-AC locals soon.
02:24And hope that once these trials are completed and all the results are satisfactory,
02:29in the near future, we will also be adding similar trains for increasing the passenger's convenience and ensuring the passenger's
02:37safety.
