06:11After a night of reflecting on her unhealthy relationship with her boyfriend, David Weintraub,
06:16Mary finally found the courage to take a critical step towards claiming her sobriety.
06:21Hey, David.
06:23You know, everyone in the house is right about you.
06:25The way you talk to me is totally wrong.
06:27The way you've treated Seth is wrong.
06:29And I just really think that I want to keep it strictly business.
06:34And I really don't even want to keep it business, except for the fact that we have the book deal.
06:38Yeah, I got a f***ing 12-year-old.

06:44It hung up on me.
06:47Breaking up with David is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.
06:51But it made me realize how much I value the friendships and support that I have found with my new
06:55fellow roommates.
07:08Since Andy's arrival, he's had a stabilizing influence on the house.
07:11However, he has suffered with his addiction for many years.
07:14And it's been at the core of his belligerent behavior that not only cost him a great deal of public
07:20humiliation,
07:23but also destroyed many of his closest relationships.
07:27I wanted to have him sit down with renowned psychiatrist Dr. Charles Sophie to help him address these issues.

07:34Hello.
07:35How are you? Nice to meet you.
07:36Have a seat. Make yourself comfortable.
07:38Thank you so much.
07:38So we were going to meet today as an initial meeting to kind of get some kind of plan to
07:42move forward.
07:43So tell me, when you were using, what was your drug of choice beer?
07:49A lot?
07:49A lot of beer.
07:51Regularly?
07:52Every day.
07:53Any criminal history?
07:56A little bit.
07:57What's that mean?
07:58Well, just a little bit.
07:59I've been arrested a couple times and, you know, I crashed my car and got a DUI.
08:04We went to jail for that.
08:06Tell me, what was it like growing up?
08:08My dad was in the Navy, so he just physically wasn't there.
08:12And my mom was drinking a lot, so she wasn't there.
08:14You know, look at that.
08:16But they were great.
08:17My mom had dinner on the table all the time.
08:19But did you just hear yourself?
08:21My dad was never there.
08:22My mom was drunk.
08:24They were great, though.
08:25Well, they were.
08:26That's all I knew.
08:28Yeah, I understand that.
08:29But that doesn't mean they're bad.
08:30But that does mean that maybe you didn't get parenting.
08:34Yeah.
08:34I don't think I got much parenting.
08:36And I think that there's a lot of stuff in there to trigger anybody.
08:40How old do you think you are emotionally?
08:46I might be 12.
08:48Are you afraid to grow up?
08:51I'm not afraid.
08:52I just, I kind of don't want to.

09:01There's a lot of things about my past that I don't like.
09:07i would love to redo chunks of my life go back and just redo it do it right well you

09:16have the opportunity to do somewhat of that kind of going out and making your amends and repairing
09:23the people that you know got trampled out in the meantime yeah because if you don't that's what
09:29triggers you to drink okay that's our plan yeah okay that sounds good all right thank you nice to
09:38meet you i'll see you again thank you sorry my drinking has destroyed a lot of my closest
09:52relationships and right now i'm going to sit down with a very close friend of mine mo collins who
09:59i have hurt she has been in the trenches with me hardcore with drinking and drugging
10:06then she stopped i don't know if she's comfortable talking about her stuff but we'll find out
10:19well did i scare you i'm sorry you did scare me hi baby i don't want to thank you
10:34you're just always skinny thanks for meeting me well i wanted to see you because i'm still living
10:54things to apologize for glad you asked here's my list the scroll yeah i was gonna ask you because
11:03most of the time i was so drunk i don't even remember let me hit the ones that i remember

11:07i remember you were on stage at uh one of the comedy clubs and i was out of my mind
11:14you ruined my set
11:16yeah i apologize for that as per usual andy dick you had to make it about you
11:24i'm not not anymore i'm not drinking we'll see
11:31do you remember having a conversation with my ex-husband
11:40that was horrible and uh i'm divorced now that was really really painful for him
11:53i forgot that was really bad that was a big one it really is i was trying to help but
12:03but i was sick
12:05and i was you know there was a lot of stuff going on if you remember that's why i called
12:12you you're
12:13really one of my only friends i have left but you understand you know but all my other friends i
12:20really
12:20lost i really almost killed them killed them yeah you're one of my only friends
12:34that was very good for me to do but i need to do that
12:38it's hundreds of times over with a lot of different people
12:46coming up this is
12:54for every patient relapsing brings with it additional problems and stress
12:59unfortunately for steven his last relapse precipitated legal consequences as well
13:05you still smell it still completely chaked with heroin
13:21well i'm getting ready to go to court take care of uh business that i brought upon myself that i
13:29need
13:29to take care of so i can move on to the future and the only way to do that is
13:34to show up and that and
13:37i don't want dog the bounty hunter coming looking for me
13:41steven adler seems to be doing better since his last relapse
13:46all right that's respectable huh however as a result of his actions he's had to hire a lawyer and now
13:53must
13:53appear in court
14:02this is a simple we call a pretty basic drug possession charge the only difference is that it's heroin
14:13which carries probably the most stringent penalties of all the drugs you could abuse
14:19that is a bus you never want to be on there's two places you don't ever want to be and
14:26it's in jail
14:26and heavy at the river court and the morgue there's three places you don't know you're at the morgue
14:41good luck we'll catch you when you're coming out
15:01how'd it go in there it went great it went great we uh we have the matter put over to
15:06the 20th
15:08of august for arraignment here all right listen the bottom line is i made a mistake i relapsed
15:17you got to pay for your mistakes you know any advice have your loved ones videotape you
15:25use it and then watch it when you're sober and see how terrible you look and terrible you act
15:33and i'm pretty sure that'll help you not want to use anymore
15:52andy has begun a very difficult but critical step towards his recovery by making amends to those he
15:57his harm with each amends he can get closer to restoring his spiritual emptiness that in many
16:02ways is at the core of his addiction so i'm about to see a guy named craig he's the owner
16:11of a bar
16:12called the woods which i've been kicked out of on a number of occasions so hopefully this guy will
16:19accept my amends because i don't know maybe he won't it's dark in here
16:29i didn't really realize how beautiful this place is how are you doing andy how are you i'm doing a
16:36lot
16:36better well i came to address you know me coming to your bar i think a lot you came here
16:47like right
16:48when i opened you haven't made it to my new one yet what's that i'm not telling you
16:55well i want to apologize for the way i act when i just drink too much obviously i'm drinking to
17:04the
17:04point where i don't know what i'm doing and i do something to upset somebody and all of a sudden
17:10i'm being escorted out i've come to learn to just go along with it as soon as i feel somebody
17:15grabbing
17:15my arm like what did i do now i don't even fight it and i just leave i mean i
17:19appreciate you
17:20apologizing to me i i don't enjoy having to tell people to leave um i specifically don't enjoy seeing
17:27people that you no need to stop you know what i'm saying yeah i mean yes this is what i
17:34do and this is
17:35where i make my money but i'm not here to see people destroy themselves i do have vague recollections
17:41of you just being really nice to me when i was not in a good place i'm in a sober
17:48living right now
17:50uh went to rehab went into sober living
17:57so i want to apologize

18:15coming up you get up you do stupid
18:24with only a few days left until the residents leave the sober house i'm encouraged by their
18:29progress especially rodney who's steadily becoming more secure in his recovery but i fear that if he
18:35doesn't find a healthy way to work and live how you feeling feeling good yeah he may spiral back into
18:42his old ways when he leaves the sober house i wanted to meet with him to discuss his plans for
18:47the future
18:47my brother just started a job today he just started the uh uh construction job yes the construction
18:55so um i'm gonna call him so i can find out when i can get started oh you're gonna work
18:59for him okay
19:00yeah and this would fit into your structure here at sober living yeah yeah oh yeah he'll make sure yeah
19:05great and what are your challenges right now my challenges yeah um i've been really thinking um
19:13um i don't uh really turning the house into a sober living your own home yeah my home will you
19:19have
19:19to get rid of some people to do that you know but i don't now i don't now because my
19:23my brother he's uh
19:24he's moved on with my aunt and so it's just it's just uh me and don there you know we
19:32was thinking
19:32about just you know get an apartment somewhere and just you know make sure that the house runs like a
19:38a productive uh sober living house you know with the meetings right and all great good about it
19:45that could be nice yeah yeah i want to give something back you know good
19:51part of being sober right i think you're doing real well i think you know you're doing well thanks
19:57thanks for everything doctor don't look good my friend really appreciate it
20:08after talking with dr drew about starting my own sober house i felt pretty motivated about it
20:13i decided to take a ride out to my house i hadn't been back there since i got sober
20:21but when i walked in i was absolutely shocked
20:27gosh i couldn't believe that's how i was living my life
20:40i looked around and and it was hard to imagine you know my drinking had got me to this place
20:52for the first time it hit me that my addiction had robbed me of everything
21:11coming back here and seeing my house in this condition there's no way i can set up a sober house
21:18here this was enough to make me want to start drinking again i mean i just wanted to get the
21:25hell out of here you know
21:33life is more exciting sober i'm more childlike when i'm sober i want to go explore and do things
21:42when i was drinking i just wanted to sit in my booth at the pizza place and drink my pictures
21:48of beer
21:49that's all i wanted to do so boring my assistant would say are we gonna sit here in the pizza
21:54place
21:55again for five hours cooper used to be my assistant and we got sober together he has remained sober
22:03and i uh remained drunk so i need to make an amends to him because i think i made him
22:10look bad
22:11on a number of occasions good to see everybody how are you what's this this is um they actually put
22:24me
22:24in the psych ward they were smart i drank so much that they tranquilized me in the ass twice you
22:33would
22:33have laughed i would have laughed well the reason i i wanted to talk to you in person like this
22:42is
22:42because i want to apologize for things that i've done to you that weren't cool whether it was me
22:49yelling at you or whether it's making you look bad because you you invited me to one of your clubs
22:55and then i
22:55show up drunk and the thing is the weird thing is that usually i was so drunk that i don't
23:01even
23:01remember and i'm asking you are there things that i need to apologize for that i'm not even aware of
23:08you get up you do stupid and it could quite possibly kill you there was the time when we
23:16were driving back from vegas that i had tried saying and you can't drink an open beer in the car
23:21and pouring it all over me i get out the car you drive off i was sitting there at 2
23:25a.m on the side
23:26of the 15 in the middle of death valley like okay what am i gonna do now and my cell
23:32phone was in the
23:32car just so you understand that the level of insanity that that you went to you know there was the
23:41time
23:41where we're pulling onto the street and your foot was out the window i was rolling the windows up and
23:47you thought i had tried to trap your foot in the window so you started kicking me in the face
23:55i love you buddy and i'm always going to be here for you just not when you're acting like
24:01i just want to tell you that i have to apologize for all the crap i put you through but
24:09i'm sick of it
24:10i'm done with it and i ain't going back this is the first time where i have put sobriety before
24:16anything else career family you friends i just got it too you know if you take this seriously
24:26that's the best amends you can make to any of us who are actually close to you
24:34i want nothing more than for you to succeed i love you
24:41when meeting with andy went great i think he's taking it seriously you know he seemed honest and
24:46it's the first time i've heard him say that he's putting his recovery for anything else in his life
24:51and it means a lot to me uh because he's taking care of himself that's a big thing
24:58coming up today i really
25:04i have grave concerns for nikki who just two days ago was making amazing progress with her music
25:10until she got word of a tragedy surrounding her friends and family
25:13to make matters worse today marks the anniversary of her mother's death it's really hard dealing with
25:20the death of my mom sober you know god works in mysterious ways
25:26everything hit me all at one time i was thinking about things and trying not to cry
25:32and just normally i would have a few drinks do a little bit of bloat and i'm the pain i
25:37mean just
25:38anything to to take it away tonight she must sing for the first time at her new job in beverly
25:45hills
25:46so i wanted to meet with her to be sure she's not on the brink of a relapse
25:52how are you we're very colorful yeah right so how are you not very good yeah did you wake up

26:02bad or did you anticipate feeling bad or were you thinking this would be easier than you thought

27:58very very pleased and you're tolerating today you have been doing very well i think i think that's
28:03just because that's me like i'm tired of trying to be the other person the hostile aggressive
28:13person right well that the rock star this one yeah now i have to figure out a way to you
28:22know be
28:22that crazy rock star on stage without drugs and alcohol like i have to totally turn it around and
28:29find a new way to do that and i think that that person is almost gone like the bad one
28:36and that more
28:38of me is coming out and i'm more positive and i'm more um sweet and sensitive and can you draw

28:47two together a little bit i have to find a new way to do that i i believe you will
29:07ever since steven's court appearance he seems to have had a shift in attitude
29:12not only has he become very lethargic but he appears to have adopted an aggressive attitude
29:19just a week ago he offered to help nikki with her music so steven i needed to ask you if
29:25we like
29:26put this whole band together will you drum yeah yeah please awesome really come on that'd be cool
29:32but now just hours from her big performance he's having second thoughts you okay yeah
29:39i got the naked to do the nikki thing too yeah yeah yeah it's one song it's the one you

29:47so yeah i don't know i don't think we should do it she doesn't need me necessarily well she wants

33:10he looks not himself again and i'm concerned for him i'm concerned he might be getting high or he's
33:16gonna get high yeah he might just be going for a really tough time okay that makes you look really
33:22high you know there's a lot of drama and he doesn't like it yeah it's eight o'clock you're supposed

33:29on a date i know the worst thing that could happen in my performance tonight was that i cry
33:35through inconsolable and i just can't do it there's just so much going on for me right now that
33:41i honestly can't believe i'm still sober i'm really nervous it's my first time performing sober really
33:49so it's um definitely going to be a new experience for me it's also um the anniversary of my mom's
33:56death so you know i'm going to be doing this one for her
