00:00On this episode of Expedition Files.
00:04For centuries, sailors feared a monster called the Kraken, which dragged ships to their doom.
00:13But what if their stories were rooted in something real?
00:18Now, a creature from the depths has been found alive that might expose the truth behind the legendary Kraken.
00:26Then, Georgia's largest lake is also its deadliest.
00:34With decades of mysterious drownings fueling whispers of a supernatural curse.
00:41But insights into the lake's dark past may finally shed light on these fatal tragedies.
00:49And Atlantis, the ancient metropolis, said to be sunk below the waves by the wrath of angry gods.
00:58Is there any historic basis behind the iconic myth?
01:03After a series of potential discoveries, we reveal all.
01:10In the corridors of time
01:14Are mysteries that defy explanation
01:18Now, I'm traveling through history itself
01:25On a search for the truth
01:29New evidence
01:32Shocking answers
01:36I'm Josh Gates
01:38And these
01:41Are my Expedition Files
01:48I spend more time than most on or under the water
01:52From zero visibility flooded pyramids in Sudan
01:55To the swirling seas of the Mediterranean
01:58Honestly, I owe most of my career to Dramamine
02:00But the thing is, if you're in the business of adventure
02:03There's nowhere more exciting or mysterious than the watery depths
02:07And tonight, we look at three files that prove just that
02:11Plunging deep to find secrets hidden below the surface
02:15We begin, where else?
02:17But out on the wild ocean
02:19The North Sea, to be exact
02:21And you're about to experience one of the world's most legendary nautical encounters
02:26It's the 12th century, and this crew of Norse sailors is among the hardiest on the high seas
02:32But they're about to be humbled
02:34Moments from now, according to an extraordinary written account
02:38This vessel will be ambushed from the depths by a terrifying and gigantic monster
02:44The beast will earn a name that will echo through the centuries
02:48The Kraken
02:49Like Nessie and Bigfoot, it will take its place among the pantheon of legendary creatures
02:55But 800 years from now, shocking scientific evidence will suggest this mythic sea monster
03:02Might be more than just a fantasy
03:19As the tale goes, the first sign of something out of the ordinary
03:24Is when the Norse crew notices fish appearing in abundance
03:30Thousands of them thrashing near the surface
03:35Then comes the smell
03:37Something foul
03:38Something evil
03:40In the salt air, there's a sulfurous stench that burns the nostrils
03:47At that moment, it's said that a crewman spots a small island dead ahead
03:52But one not on their charts
03:54Like a slick black rock in the ocean
03:59But it's no rock
04:00It's alive
04:10The crew scrambles to evade the creature
04:13But it attacks
04:17A colossal mass of arriving tentacles grabs the ship
04:23Snatching sailors from the deck
04:26Legend says that the horrified Norsemen fight back
04:29But it's futile against the onslaught
04:36At last, the Leviathan submerges
04:39Forming a whirlpool in its wake
04:42As it drags the ship and her crew into the watery abyss
04:54Supposedly, days after this sea monster encounter
04:57A lone survivor washes ashore
05:00Exhausted and waterlogged
05:02The terrified sailor has not only escaped the clutches of the beast
05:06But he lives to spread the tale far and wide
05:14The survivor shares his stunning story with Norway's King Sverre
05:20The king's personal historian formally records the tale around 1180
05:26It's the first known written account of a monster
05:29That will one day be called the Kraken
05:32Over the next few centuries
05:34Many more reports emerge of confrontations with a similar creature
05:40Swedish clergyman Olus Magnus records multiple sea monster encounters
05:45In his 1555 book, History of the Northern Peoples
05:49Magnus also illustrated a large creature with squid-like tentacles
05:54And a serpent body
05:55That some say is the first depiction of the Kraken
06:01Then, in 1734, Dano-Norwegian missionary Hans Ehu
06:06Reported sighting a sea creature near Greenland
06:09Describing it as, quote, as thick as our ship
06:12And three to four times as long
06:14With a long, undulating body
06:16He also recounts how it dove back under the waves
06:20Stirring up a massive whirlpool
06:23Later, in the 1750s
06:25It's Danish maritime historian
06:27Erik Pontapadan
06:28Who finally names the creature
06:30The Kraken
06:31Which means something twisted or crooked
06:35As more and more sailors share their extraordinary eyewitness tales
06:40A consensus emerges
06:42The creature resembles a squid
06:44But one of monstrous proportions
06:46But with no evidence of squids this large
06:49The Kraken becomes something every seafarer dreads
06:52And every scientist questions
06:59In 1870, tales of the Kraken inspire Jules Verne
07:03To write 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
07:05Which features an attack by giant squids
07:08Which he refers to as devil fish
07:12The Kraken has become a thing of popular fantasy
07:15But now, potential evidence of a real-life monster
07:18Is about to surface
07:22In 1873, the carcass of a massive squid
07:26Much larger than any known species
07:28Washes ashore in Newfoundland, Canada
07:30The extraordinary specimen is examined
07:33By an amateur biologist
07:35Reverend Moses Harvey
07:36Who measures a seven-foot-long body
07:39With tentacles stretching another 24 feet in length
07:43This specimen becomes the first formally identified species
07:47Of Architeuthis ducks
07:49Also known as the giant squid
07:52Is this creature what seafarers through history have been reporting?
07:56Has the truth of the Kraken finally been revealed?
08:05In the late 1800s, remains of an enormous giant squid wash ashore
08:11Could this be the real creature behind the legendary Kraken?
08:15To learn more about this most mysterious species
08:18Scientists need to find one alive
08:20But it won't be easy
08:22In fact, it will take another 131 years
08:25Marine scientist Matthew Mulrennan
08:28Who founded a company dedicated to finding and filming
08:31The elusive colossal squid
08:33Explains how it was finally discovered
08:35As a marine scientist
08:37I had become really fascinated with the colossal squid
08:40Because it lives in the deep sea
08:42It's such a foreign environment for us
08:44It's so hard to do research there
08:46And for hundreds of years
08:47The myth of the Kraken was worldwide
08:50And there was legends of these huge squids out in the ocean
08:54But then the myth became reality
08:57In 2004, off of Ogasawara Island in Japan
09:02Researchers captured something truly amazing
09:05Japanese zoologist Tsunimi Kubadera and his team
09:09Lowered a specially designed baited camera
09:12Nearly 3,000 feet beneath the surface
09:15Into a world rarely seen by human eyes
09:18And after centuries of rumor and fleeting evidence
09:21The giant squid finally revealed itself
09:25The camera records a massive giant squid
09:28Surging out of the darkness
09:30Attacking the bait with speed and force
09:33One of its long tentacles lashes out and becomes entangled
09:37Allowing the team to photograph the animal alive
09:40In its natural habitat for the very first time
09:45The squid got caught on the lure
09:47At 3,000 feet depth
09:49And then as they were trying to pull it back to the surface
09:53It broke free and one of its arms actually detached
09:57The squid may have lost a tentacle in the encounter with the camera
10:01But with the ability to regrow appendages
10:04It likely survived
10:05The images confirmed what scientists had long suspected
10:09The giant squid is no passive deep sea drifter
10:13But a powerful active predator
10:15Estimated to reach nearly 27 feet in length
10:18So this was truly an amazing moment for marine science
10:22For hundreds of years we knew that giant squids were out there in the ocean
10:26They had found bits and pieces in the stomach of sperm whales
10:29They'd heard tales from fishermen and other scientists
10:32Of them washing up in Newfoundland and in Norway
10:35But they'd never been able to see the giant squid
10:38And how it behaves in the deep sea
10:40Those groundbreaking photographs sparked a surge of new exploration
10:45In 2012 researchers lowered a specialized deep sea video camera to a depth of about half a mile
10:52And what they filmed was jaw-dropping
10:57For the first time a giant squid was captured alive on video
11:02Its long tentacles reaching and probing through the darkness
11:06Using a stealthy low-light camera system researchers made a key discovery
11:12Giant squid are visually driven predators
11:15They got that first close-up of the giant squid
11:19It kind of changed a lot of perceptions
11:21This wasn't a terrifying sea monster
11:24This is a beautiful animal that undulates in really interesting ways
11:30And seven years later
11:32There'll be another stunning squid encounter
11:34In 2019, using the same system that they used off the coast of Japan
11:40They were able to again film a giant squid on video in the Gulf of Mexico
11:45This squid was measured to be around 10 feet long
11:49But was believed to be just a juvenile
11:54Most sightings appear to involve younger specimens
11:57Raising a chilling possibility
11:59If these are the juveniles, far larger giants may still lurk in the ocean's deepest reaches
12:07Scientists now theorize there could be squids out there in the deepest oceans
12:11That are even larger than these specimens
12:13Perhaps as huge as 70 feet
12:16There's also remarkable evidence of attacks on sperm whales from monster squid
12:22In the southern hemisphere, whales have been found with huge scars
12:26From the barbed, swiveling hooks of the colossal squid's tentacles
12:31Thanks to modern scientific observations and discoveries
12:35Many believe the legendary kraken has finally been unmasked
12:39It turns out it's no myth
12:41But a very real giant squid
12:43The kraken is a sailor-eating, ship-sinking sea monster
12:49For hundreds of years, it all became legend and myth
12:53Well, the kraken is a myth
12:55But the giant squid isn't
12:57The scientific reality is that we have live giant squids out in the ocean
13:02And giant squids can reach extraordinary sizes
13:06It is possible these early mariners did see a giant squid out there in the ocean
13:11And what they saw could have been the foundation for the legend of the kraken
13:16I could say with pretty good confidence that there are larger squids than we've been able to find
13:20Still out there in the ocean left to discover
13:22But whether the kraken size, who knows
13:28If a monster squid can take on a 60-foot sperm whale
13:32Is it that much of a stretch to imagine that it also might have taken on something like
13:37Oh, I don't know
13:37A 12th century Norse trading ship
13:40Those sailors may well have encountered 40-foot tentacles bubbling up from the deep
13:45Then, through countless retellings
13:47And no doubt a fair amount of mead
13:49The story may have transformed into a terrifying battle with an island-sized monster
13:55In the end, the fearsome kraken may just be a case of a tall squid
13:59Twisted into an even taller tail
14:08It's November 14th, 1959
14:11A beautiful morning on Georgia's Lake Lanier
14:14But behind me, a shocking crime scene
14:16A lone fisherman was casting for bass
14:19But reeled in a nightmare
14:21The badly decomposed body of a woman in a blue dress
14:25Her hands missing
14:26Even more shocking
14:27Dozens of people will later report seeing the ghost of this woman
14:31Who will become known as the Lady of the Lake
14:34These sightings will fuel the belief that this place is cursed
14:38And the body count will seemingly back that up
14:41By the 2020s, an estimated 700 will have drowned here
14:46Now, a dark history long hidden deep below the surface
14:50Reveals the horrifying truth lurking in Lake Lanier
15:03The tragedy of the woman found in the lake begins a year and a half earlier
15:07On April 16th, 1958
15:1022-year-old Delia May Parker Young
15:14And her friend, 37-year-old Susie Roberts
15:17Are dancing the night away at the local roadhouse
15:20The two young mothers are enjoying a rare night off
15:23Around 11 p.m., they hop into Susie's Ford sedan
15:27Heading home in the direction of Lake Lanier
15:30Taking the Highway 53 bridge
15:33They are never seen again
15:45The next day, tire marks near the bridge
15:47Lead some to believe the women lost control
15:50And plunged into the water
15:52Police drag the lake and scour the shoreline
15:55But come up empty-handed
15:57It's as if the women simply vanished
16:0118 months later, our fisherman makes his ghastly discovery
16:08Police suspect the dead woman is Delia May Parker Young
16:11Who was wearing a blue dress the night she went missing
16:15But with her advanced state of decomposition
16:18The tattered shreds of sun-bleached fabric
16:21Are not enough to make a definitive ID
16:24And there's still no sign of Susie Roberts or the car
16:28The mystery of what happened to the two women
16:30Hangs in the air like the lake's heavy mist
16:33And that's when the ghost stories begin
16:38Drivers along State Route 53
16:40Tell of a spectral woman in a blue dress
16:43Missing her hands
16:45Pacing the bridge at night
16:47As if searching for something
16:48Or someone
16:51Boaters and fishermen whisper of strange encounters near the bridge
16:55A shadowy figure in blue
16:57Gliding along the shoreline
16:59Then vanishing into the mist
17:01Swimmers report something even more chilling
17:05A sudden grip at their ankle
17:07Pulling them under
17:10These stories give birth to a legend
17:13The Lady of the Lake
17:15Forever haunting Lanier's waters
17:20Believers say she's the ghost of Delia May Parker Young
17:24But Delia's far from the lake's last victim
17:31On Christmas Day 1964
17:33A station wagon packed with two families
17:36Swerves off the bridge and sinks
17:40Eleven people go under
17:42Only four surface alive
17:45Two adults and five children are lost forever
17:51Over the years hundreds more perish in the lake
17:54And its infamy grows
17:57Then in 1990 there's a shocking discovery
18:00That splashes the name Lake Lanier
18:02Across newspapers nationwide
18:05A construction crew working on the Highway 53 bridge
18:08Over Lake Lanier calls in divers
18:11To inspect the base of the foundation
18:13But what they find isn't concrete or rebar
18:16It's a car sitting silently on the lake bed
18:20A salvage team manages to get the vehicle to the surface
18:24The license plate proves it belongs to Susie Roberts
18:28And inside they discover her skeleton
18:31Still behind the wheel
18:34This all but confirms the body found in 1959
18:37Belonged to her friend Delia May Parker Young
18:41After 32 years
18:43The mystery of what truly happened to the women
18:46Is finally put to rest
18:55And yet
18:57Lake Lanier's body count keeps rising
18:5919 deaths in 1999
19:0318 in 2016
19:0513 in 2023
19:08Far more than other popular lakes in the region
19:12Most are officially ruled drownings or boating accidents
19:16Deaths continue to the present day
19:19As recently as several months ago
19:21Ghostly sightings also continue
19:24With people still regularly reporting
19:27Seeing the Lady of the Lake
19:28Alongside other disturbing entities
19:32Each new tragedy deepens the sense
19:34That Lanier must be cursed
19:36So the question remains
19:38Why is this lake so deadly?
19:40Is it truly haunted by a ghost?
19:42Or is it something even more sinister?
19:49Over the years
19:50Chilling reports of fatalities
19:52Keep surfacing at Georgia's Lake Lanier
19:55Earning it a reputation
19:56As one of America's deadliest bodies of water
19:59For decades
20:00Many have wondered
20:01What makes Lanier so dangerous?
20:03Today
20:04Experts are focusing on the way it was constructed
20:07That's right
20:08Lake Lanier is not natural
20:09It's a man-made reservoir
20:11We're now university professor
20:13And Lanier historian Dr. Charlie Garner explains
20:16Lake Lanier was the brainchild
20:19Of some rather heavy hitters in politics
20:22In the Atlanta area
20:24In the early 1950s
20:26They needed flood control for the area
20:28Said they needed that drinking water for Atlanta
20:31They needed power generation for Atlanta
20:33So those were the reasons for the lake's creation
20:37To build the reservoir
20:38The government constructed a hydroelectric dam
20:41In Forsyth County
20:42As a result
20:43An area of nearly 60 square miles
20:46Was flooded
20:47And of course there's a number of families' homes
20:51Their farms were within that area of impoundment
20:56For the lake
20:57The lake covered up whole communities
21:00Like Oscarville
21:02If the name Oscarville is unfamiliar to you
21:05That's because it was literally washed off the map
21:08And with it
21:09A dark chapter in American history
21:11Was also submerged
21:13After the Civil War
21:15As you can imagine
21:16There were a great many slaves
21:18That were freed in that particular area
21:22And a small community grew up on the banks
21:25On the north bank of the Chattahoochee
21:27This small community called Oscarville
21:29And yet
21:31As throughout the south
21:33During the time
21:33There was a great deal of tension
21:36Between the white population
21:38And the black population
21:40Despite the hostility
21:42The black community thrives
21:44Then comes September 8, 1912
21:47May Crowe
21:48A local white teenager
21:50Vanishes on the way to her aunt's house
21:52I think we found her
21:54The next day
21:56A search party
21:56Finds May in the woods
21:58Outside of town
21:59Violently assaulted
22:00And clinging to life
22:04She never regains consciousness
22:06And dies two weeks later
22:08In the hospital
22:09The usual suspects
22:11For the white population
22:13Would be the African Americans
22:15And so they quickly arrested three
22:18On very, very flimsy evidence
22:25One was lynched right away
22:27The two others went to trial
22:29But of course they were convicted
22:31By an all-white jury
22:34And they were executed as well
22:36That seemed to set off the powder keg
22:42Of racial tension in that area
22:44And mobs of white people
22:48Stormed through the Oscarville community
22:50And drove the African American families
22:54Away from their homes
22:57When the government decided
22:59To create Lake Lanier
23:00The remaining property owners
23:02Were bought out
23:02And structures were demolished
23:04But not everything was cleared
23:06Before the waters rose
23:08Lake Lanier is a dangerous lake
23:11Because of the things
23:12That are on the bottom
23:13But also the things that float up
23:16The history of the destruction
23:19In Forsyth County
23:20At Oscarville
23:22The covering up
23:23Of all the people's properties
23:26And cemeteries of loved ones
23:28And to this day
23:30It is really unknown
23:31How many graves are under Lake Lanier
23:35There are so many things under the lake
23:38Large barns
23:40And houses
23:41Structures still under the water
23:42Very easily
23:44These could be the explanations
23:46For people thinking
23:47That they've been grabbed
23:48By a ghostly hand
23:50When in actuality
23:52They've just got entangled
23:53With the branches of a tree
23:55Or a bush
23:56Or some other thing
23:57Some sort of building
23:59Underneath the water
24:01And then you add into
24:03That the tragedies
24:05Of families even
24:07That were killed
24:08In car accidents
24:11Or like the story
24:13Of the lady of the lake
24:14You see how these
24:15These all come together
24:17To build up a feeling
24:19That Lake Lanier is cursed
24:21Is it haunted?
24:22Is it evil in some sense?
24:24Well I know a lot of people
24:25That do believe that very firmly
24:29But I'm going to see
24:30A little bit more evidence
24:33For historians like Dr. Garner
24:35The submerged structures
24:36Of Oscarville
24:37Offer a more practical explanation
24:39For the high amount
24:40Of accidents here
24:41Especially given that the lake
24:43Is now a major
24:44Summer tourism destination
24:48Experts have also pointed out
24:49That the lake waters
24:50Can be dark and murky
24:52Making it hard to find people
24:53Who slip beneath the surface
24:55Some critics have even called
24:57For the reservoir to be drained
24:58As the bodies of some
24:59Who drowned there
25:00Have never been recovered
25:01But the fact remains
25:03That the lake is critical
25:04To the area's water
25:05And power needs
25:06And the lion's share
25:08Of the 11 million yearly visitors
25:10Leave with nothing more harmful
25:11Than a sunburn
25:12But believers
25:14Especially those who swear
25:15To have seen the so-called
25:17Lady of the lake
25:18Remain convinced
25:19That this place is home
25:21To powerful paranormal forces
25:23If you ask me
25:24I'd say Lake Lanier
25:25Is haunted
25:26By ghosts
25:27Perhaps
25:28But certainly
25:29By the long
25:30And tragic history
25:31Submerged below its surface
25:40I've traveled to some
25:42Incredible places
25:43But this might just
25:44Take the cake
25:45Welcome to the
25:46Glittering island utopia
25:47Of Atlantis
25:48Circa 9400 BC
25:51But don't get too attached
25:53Because this place
25:54Ain't gonna be around
25:55Much longer
25:55After getting too big
25:57For their britches
25:58The Greek gods
25:59Have decided to punish
26:00The Atlanteans
26:01With floods
26:02And earthquakes
26:02That will send this city
26:04To the bottom of the sea
26:06At least that's the story
26:08According to the philosopher
26:09Plato
26:09He'll be the first
26:11And only primary source
26:12For the Atlantis legend
26:14And forever after
26:15The world will wonder
26:17Was Atlantis
26:18It's actually
26:18A real place
26:20Well
26:2011,000 years from now
26:22A series of potential
26:23Discoveries
26:24Will bring the world's
26:25Most famous
26:26Sunken city
26:27Back from the depths
26:38Meet Plato
26:40Maybe you already know him
26:41As a wearer
26:42Of fine togas
26:44But if you don't
26:45He's arguably
26:46The most famous
26:47Philosopher
26:48In western history
26:52Famed for his ideas
26:53About metaphysics
26:54Society
26:55Politics
26:56And most importantly
26:58For us right now
26:59For recording
27:00The story
27:01Of Atlantis
27:05According to Plato's story
27:07In the beginning
27:08The gods divide
27:09The earth among themselves
27:11With the deity
27:12Poseidon
27:12Claiming the island
27:13Of Atlantis
27:14After falling in love
27:16With a mortal woman
27:17Poseidon fathers
27:19Ten sons
27:19Giving each
27:20A region of Atlantis
27:22To govern
27:22Then he watches
27:24As the island blooms
27:25Into a cultural
27:26And technological utopia
27:33Legend says
27:34A massive seawall
27:35Protects a network
27:36Of harbors
27:37Filled with merchant ships
27:38From all over the world
27:42Defended by a navy
27:431,200 warships strong
27:45The capital itself
27:48Is constructed
27:48With concentric rings
27:50Of land and water
27:51Built around a central island
27:53On which stands
27:54The royal palace
27:55And a 600 foot long
27:57Temple to Poseidon
27:58Clad in silver
28:00Gold
28:00And a mysterious metal
28:02Called orichalcul
28:04Bridges and canals
28:06Connect the water rings
28:07Allowing large ships
28:09To navigate
28:09Throughout the city
28:10Sophisticated aqueducts
28:12Keep the farmlands fertile
28:17Plato writes
28:19That Atlanteans
28:20Possess a divine nature
28:21Like a nation
28:22Of boy scouts
28:23They value friendship
28:24Wisdom
28:25And self-restraint
28:27Not wealth
28:28And luxury
28:28In short
28:29It's nothing less
28:30Than the ideal civilization
28:32But nothing perfect
28:34Lasts forever
28:39Atlantis' leaders
28:40Get greedy
28:41Deploying their
28:42Formidable navy
28:43To take over
28:44Neighboring lands
28:46They conquer
28:48And enslave
28:48Parts of North Africa
28:49And Europe
28:50Expanding their
28:51Vast empire
28:53Atlanteans
28:54Turn from superheroes
28:55Into supervillains
28:57Their moral compass
28:58Swayed by a lust
29:00For power
29:02Atlantis' rise
29:04Seems unstoppable
29:05Until it reaches
29:06Athens
29:09There
29:09The Athenians
29:10Rise up
29:11And repel
29:12The invaders
29:16But Atlantis'
29:17Thirst for conquest
29:18Doesn't just provoke
29:19The Athenians
29:20It enrages
29:21Zeus
29:22The supreme leader
29:23Of the Greek gods
29:24And he's about to unleash
29:26A punishment
29:27So cataclysmic
29:28It will wipe
29:29Their entire world
29:30Off the map
29:38In 9400 BC
29:40The legendary city
29:42Of Atlantis
29:43Is a thriving city-state
29:44According to
29:45Greek philosopher
29:46Plato
29:46But when its rulers
29:48Push beyond their borders
29:49In a bid for conquest
29:50They enrage
29:51The gods
29:52Including Zeus
29:53Who resolves to unleash
29:55A devastating punishment
29:56For their greed
30:00Plato records
30:01That a cataclysm arrives
30:03Massive earthquakes
30:05Shake Atlantis apart
30:11Monstrous tidal waves
30:13Pound the once mighty
30:15Island empire
30:16Into the sea
30:22Within a single day
30:23All of Atlantis
30:24Is wiped
30:25Off the face
30:26Of the earth
30:27As if
30:28It never existed
30:31Even though
30:32Plato first recorded
30:34The story of Atlantis
30:35Nearly 2500 years ago
30:37Its cultural impact
30:38Is as alive today
30:39As it was
30:40In his time
30:41Inspiring
30:43Countless books
30:44TV shows
30:46And movies
30:48We're looking at you
30:50Jason Momoa
30:52But is any of it
30:53Based in truth?
30:55Well
30:55Plato wrote this whole
30:56Atlantis story
30:57In two dialogues
30:58Called
30:59Timaeus and Critias
31:01Dialogues were basically
31:02A fictional conversation
31:04For the purpose
31:05Of discussing
31:05Philosophy
31:06And ethics
31:08In this case
31:10Plato writes
31:11About the ancient
31:11Kingdom of Atlantis
31:12As an allegory
31:14For hubris
31:15And the dangers
31:15Of unchecked power
31:18Some go even further
31:19And say the whole story
31:20Is a way for Plato
31:21To mourn the death
31:23Of his beloved mentor
31:24Socrates
31:26Socrates is after all
31:27Plato's hero
31:28A foundational
31:29Greek philosopher
31:30Championing critical analysis
31:33And ethical living
31:35But in 399 BC
31:37An Athenian court
31:39Condemns him
31:39For corrupting the youth
31:41Teaching them
31:42To challenge authority
31:43And question
31:44The accepted truths
31:45Of the city
31:47Rather than
31:48Abandon his beliefs
31:49Socrates chooses
31:51To drink
31:51Poison hemlock
31:52And dies
31:58The death of Socrates
32:00Sends shockwaves
32:01Through Athens
32:02As for Plato
32:03The loss of his mentor
32:05Is life-changing
32:06Causing him to dedicate
32:07Himself to philosophy
32:09And to become disillusioned
32:11With how small-minded
32:12He believes Athens
32:13Has become
32:15That's why his Atlantis
32:17Symbolizes the glory
32:18Athens once personified
32:20And how it too
32:21Is succumbing to arrogance
32:23And moral decay
32:24But is Plato's text
32:26Really just a political
32:28Allegory
32:29Featuring a fictional
32:30Superpower
32:31Or was Atlantis
32:32A known historical place
32:34Let's not forget
32:35That many of the world's
32:36Mythic stories
32:37Have some basis
32:38In truth
32:39Like the legendary
32:40Trojan War
32:41And the now discovered
32:43City of Troy
32:44Could that be the case
32:45With Atlantis too
32:47And if so
32:48Where is it?
32:50In his text
32:51Plato says that Atlantis
32:53Lies just beyond
32:54The pillars of Heracles
32:56Now believed to be
32:57The Strait of Gibraltar
32:58Which would place it
33:00In the Atlantic Ocean
33:03Although Plato implies
33:05That Atlantis is
33:06In the Atlantic
33:07Many have said
33:08That the Great Greek
33:09Got the location wrong
33:10Proposing some rather
33:12Colorful ideas
33:13For where it's
33:14Really located
33:15Think Antarctica
33:15Or even closer to home
33:17That it was once
33:18Part of Florida
33:19Specifically Tampa
33:21Seriously
33:21One popular theory
33:23Even places Atlantis
33:24In the Bahamas
33:25And no
33:26I'm not talking about
33:27Some long lost
33:28Five star resort
33:31Seekers of the lost city
33:33Claim that an unusual
33:34Underwater formation
33:35Known as the Bimini Road
33:37Is all that remains
33:38Of an Atlantean
33:39Thoroughfare
33:41Several years ago
33:43I had a chance
33:43To investigate it
33:44For myself
33:51Huge collection
33:52Of stones here
33:53It does
33:54It looks like a road
33:58The rectangular blocks
34:00Stretch as far
34:01As the eye can see
34:02Forming a pathway
34:04That looks
34:04Well
34:05Designed
34:06It does almost
34:08Look like
34:09Massive thieving blocks
34:16To see what's going on
34:18Beneath the mysterious blocks
34:20We deployed
34:20A sub-bottom profiler
34:22Powerful sonar
34:24That can image
34:2430 feet
34:25Below the ocean floor
34:27Am I looking
34:28At structure down here
34:29What is this
34:30A solid seafloor
34:32Okay
34:33It's not an anomaly
34:38The sub-bottom profiler
34:40Reveals that the Bimini Road
34:41Is definitely
34:43A natural rock formation
34:45Its paving stone
34:46Appearance may be
34:47The result
34:48Of ocean currents
34:49Wearing away
34:50The soft limestone sediment
34:54While I didn't manage
34:56To find Atlantis
34:57In the Bahamas
34:58Other teams of explorers
34:59Continue to search for it
35:00All over the world
35:01And it's pretty tough sledding
35:05One theory places Atlantis
35:07In the desert
35:08This is the Rishat structure
35:11Also known as
35:12The Eye of the Sahara
35:15It sits deep
35:17In the deserts
35:18Of Mauritania
35:18In northwest Africa
35:20A vast circular formation
35:22Nearly 15 miles across
35:24There's just one problem
35:26It's actually
35:27An ancient geological structure
35:29And not man-made
35:32Another idea surfaces
35:34When marine biologists
35:35Exploring waters near Hawaii
35:37Record strange topography
35:39On the seafloor
35:40The location looked
35:42Like a paved path
35:43Leading the team
35:44To nickname it
35:45The Yellow Brick Road
35:47To Atlantis
35:47Later analysis
35:49Showed it was
35:50A naturally fractured
35:51Volcanic rock
35:52And not an actual road
35:56In 2018
35:57There was another
35:58Potential discovery
36:00A team announced
36:01They had found
36:01Evidence of Atlantis
36:03In the Gulf of Cadiz
36:04Off the coast of Spain
36:05Exactly where Plato
36:07Hinted it might be
36:08Could this be
36:09The breakthrough
36:10That finally proves
36:12This legendary city
36:13Was real
36:18Several years ago
36:19Breaking news surfaced
36:20Said to offer
36:21Real evidence
36:22Of Atlantis
36:23A British surveying
36:25And treasure hunting
36:25Firm Merlin Burroughs
36:27Announced they had
36:28Identified structures
36:29They believed
36:30To be part of Atlantis
36:31In the Gulf of Cadiz
36:33Along the coast
36:34Of Spain's
36:34Iberian Peninsula
36:36Their claim
36:37Is based on
36:38Satellite images
36:39Showing geometric
36:40Shapes beneath
36:41The surface
36:41Straight lines
36:43Rectangular outlines
36:44And large circular
36:46Formations
36:46That they believe
36:47To be buried buildings
36:49Or other structures
36:50Stel Pavlo
36:52Co-host of the
36:53Discovery series
36:53Hunting Atlantis
36:54Was among the first
36:56To investigate
36:56Their findings
36:57What made that story
36:59Really sort of
37:00Take off
37:01In 2018
37:02Is because
37:03They had
37:04Satellite images
37:05They were using
37:06The latest
37:07Cutting edge
37:08Technology
37:09Which had already
37:10Been used to find
37:11Hidden features
37:13In Egypt
37:13It was like
37:14Aha
37:15At last
37:15Technology is going
37:16To solve this
37:17This is what
37:18Merlin Burroughs does
37:19They have
37:20A track record
37:21So when they
37:22Make a claim
37:23Like this
37:24You're certainly
37:24Gonna raise an
37:25Eyebrow
37:26And listen
37:26The Merlin Burroughs
37:28Team claimed
37:28To have found
37:29Submerged structures
37:30Laid out in
37:31Concentric circles
37:33Just like
37:33Plato's city plan
37:34But just like
37:36The eye of the
37:36Sahara
37:37It would take
37:37More than a few
37:38Circles to prove
37:39This was really
37:40Atlantis
37:41Other researchers
37:42Went out there
37:42To take a look
37:43The circular features
37:45That they found
37:46Turned out to be
37:47Ponds
37:49Man-made ponds
37:51Yes
37:51But not from
37:5211,000 years ago
37:54From just
37:5420 years ago
37:56Designed to study
37:57Plankton
37:57But there were
37:58Other astonishing
38:00Atlantis claims
38:01To come
38:01In 2020
38:03A research team
38:04Claimed Ireland
38:05Once went by
38:06Another name
38:08Atlantis
38:10They pointed to
38:11What they saw
38:12As striking parallels
38:13With Plato's
38:14Account of Atlantis
38:15Arguing that
38:16Ireland's
38:17Central plain
38:18Ringed by mountains
38:19Mirrors the landscape
38:20He described
38:21Archaeologists
38:23Remain sceptical
38:24While Stone Age
38:25Artifacts have been
38:26Recovered
38:27There's no evidence
38:28Of the advanced
38:29Society Plato
38:30Described
38:31And many say
38:32Research like this
38:33Tries a little too
38:34Hard to make
38:35The legend fit
38:36Existing maps
38:37These theories
38:39Are taking
38:39Everything far
38:40Too literally
38:41These are
38:42People with
38:43Real passion
38:44But they bring
38:46Their biases
38:46To it
38:47And instead
38:48Of just
38:48Dispassionately
38:49Looking at
38:49What there
38:50Is
38:50They kind
38:51Of start
38:51Filling in
38:52The blanks
38:53If you're
38:54Going to go
38:54Looking for
38:55Atlantis
38:55You're looking
38:56For broader
38:57Brushstrokes
38:58You're not
38:58Looking for
38:59An exact
39:00Match
39:01To what
39:02Plato describes
39:05The blanks
39:06Stel doesn't
39:07Believe
39:07There's
39:07A lost
39:08Atlantis
39:08Out there
39:09Matching
39:10Plato's
39:10Description
39:10He does
39:11Still think
39:12There's
39:12Some remarkable
39:13Truth to
39:14The story
39:14In the
39:16Period
39:16That we're
39:17Talking about
39:17In the
39:17Fifth millennium
39:18B.C.
39:19There's
39:19What's
39:19Called
39:20A melt
39:20Water
39:20Pulse
39:21And what
39:22That is
39:22Is water
39:23Coming from
39:23Glaciers
39:24That are
39:24Melting
39:24From the
39:25End
39:25Of the
39:25Ice
39:25Age
39:25That all
39:26Rushes
39:27Out
39:27And starts
39:28Flooding
39:28The coastlines
39:29And starts
39:30Sinking
39:31Certain cities
39:32It comes
39:33Rushing in
39:34And it starts
39:35Causing all
39:35Kinds of
39:35Chaos
39:36That pretty
39:38Much matches
39:38The type
39:39Of thing
39:40That Plato's
39:41Talking about
39:41That catastrophe
39:43Is in the
39:44Record
39:44It's in the
39:45Archaeological
39:46And geological
39:47Record
39:47So that's
39:47A large
39:48Element
39:48That Plato
39:49Gets
39:49Correct
39:52There are
39:53Indeed
39:54Multiple
39:54Historical
39:55Occurrences
39:56Of nature
39:57Wiping out
39:57Entire
39:58Civilizations
39:59Around
39:59Plato's
40:00Time
40:01The volcanic
40:03Eruption
40:03Of Thera
40:04Around
40:041600
40:05B.C.
40:06Unleashes
40:06Massive
40:07Tsunamis
40:08That devastate
40:09The Minoan
40:09Civilization
40:10On nearby
40:10Crete
40:13Centuries
40:14Later
40:15The Greek
40:15City
40:16Of Pavlopetri
40:17Is submerged
40:17By rising
40:18Seas
40:19And just
40:20A decade
40:20Before
40:21Plato
40:21Road
40:22Of Atlantis
40:22An
40:23Earthquake
40:23And tsunami
40:24Destroys
40:25The Greek
40:25City
40:26Of Heliki
40:29It seems
40:30Highly plausible
40:31To me
40:32That there
40:33Was some
40:34Ancient
40:34City
40:35That was
40:37Destroyed
40:37In a flood
40:38That led
40:40To the myth
40:40It could be
40:42That we already
40:43Found it
40:43And haven't
40:45Made the
40:45Connection
40:46Or it could
40:47Be something
40:47That's still
40:48Lost
40:48As much
40:49As much
40:50As I'd
40:50Love
40:50To believe
40:51In an
40:51Advanced
40:51Civilization
40:52Lost beneath
40:53The waves
40:54It is
40:54Sadly
40:55Much more
40:55Likely
40:56That Atlantis
40:56Is not
40:57A real
40:58Place
40:58Atlantis
40:59Is instead
41:00An allegory
41:01A warning
41:01Of how
41:02Power
41:02Corrupts
41:03But
41:03What makes
41:04The story
41:05Remarkable
41:05Is we can
41:06Now confirm
41:07That it's
