00:06the parents of Robert Wiles said tonight this has been a horrifying experience the Toledo
00:12native disappeared in April of 2008 he was last seen in Lakeland Florida the Wiles family received
00:18a ransom demand a few days after Robert disappeared if you hope to see him again
00:23you must follow our instructions without deviation it was a multi-million dollar company they did work
00:30all over the world you want to get the attention of a king kidnap a prince my parents were ready
00:36and willing to give them everything they wanted I mean we all were this was just something that
00:43none of us has seen before no one is doing what they said they would do you just wait and
00:49you
00:49help and you pray where is this kid what happened to Rob in homicide the victim is already gone
00:59they're deceased a kidnapping has an added dynamic as far as you can tell the victim is still alive
01:10your mission is to keep that from changing I spent my career closing murder cases
01:22but I'm not the only one who answered the call
01:27it takes a rare breed to solve the unsolvable to catch a ruthless killer to find justice for the dead
01:38that's what it takes to be an American detective
01:53Tom Wiles is the owner of National Flight Services a multi-million dollar company that services private jets
02:04Tom checks his email when he sees this email it's titled Robert and he thinks that's quite odd
02:12he has a son named Robert he's 26 years old so he reads it and it opens with we have
02:19a Robert
02:22if you hope to see him again you must follow our instructions without deviation I was scared
02:31the demand he pays seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars for the safe return of Robert and he has to
02:39do
02:39so within five days any attempt to contact the authorities and we will take your son's life
02:47inside group X
02:51oh my god oh my god I did not think it was a joke I was scared of it enough
03:00that I know it called Pam
03:02right away he says somebody somebody took Robert
03:08I was like what it's like this wave just comes over your whole body and just takes
03:14your energy just out of you
03:20I didn't know if we were gonna get Robert back
03:24the uncertainty is
03:28it's horrifying
03:31almost every ransom note ever written contains the phrase do not contact the authorities the reality
03:37is if you receive such a communication call the police
03:49my name is Dan Kelly I started with the FBI in 1990 I specialized in white-collar crime you have
03:58things
03:58like bank fraud you have civil rights violations public corruption it's a very important and a very busy
04:07area of investigation for the Bureau I had not been assigned as a case agent on a kidnapping
04:14investigation previously this was just something that none of us had essentially seen before in 20
04:25years experience on the job so what we want to do is find out what can we learn about Robert
04:32Wiles
04:33who exactly is Robert and why is it that this is happening obviously we use Tom Wiles the father is
04:42a great resource
04:47Tom is the owner and CEO of national flight services they serviced private aircraft and mostly engine repair
04:56that's where the money was but they would also do upholstery painting whatever the aircraft needed
05:02it was a multi-million dollar company and they did work all over the world and traveled all over the
05:10world
05:11so the kidnappers also know that Roberts is the son of a wealthy family you want to get the attention
05:19of a king kidnap a prince right across from me is my father Tom Wiles Tom Wiles tells the FBI
05:30that
05:30Robert is employed by him they operate in different locations and different cities but they talk on the
05:36phone all the time Tom worked out of Toledo Ohio Robert was at National Flight Services in Lakeland Florida
05:46Robert was Tom's only son I mean obviously he was going to be the heir apparent to National Flight
05:52Services but Tom wanted him to learn the business from the ground up I wanted Robert to really learn all
06:00all the aspects of a company what the company did and what customers wanted us to do and Robert was
06:09very
06:10good at that when Robert was assigned to go to Lakeland Florida he was promoted to the position of business
06:20development manager his job was to attract new customers to the business and also to make current
06:26customers happy Robert you know he loved working what was important to him was doing the job right
06:35integrity was really important in our family after learning this information there is a lot of legwork
06:45to be done at this point in time we have no information relative to anyone else where is this kid
06:55the last time that Robert was seen at National Flight was approximately 7 p.m. on Tuesday April 1st 2008
07:06it is now April the 3rd and his truck is still there but he is not so the FBI sends
07:15other agents to his
07:20department nothing is out of place no evidence of a struggle nothing broken so it is a mystery he has
07:27disappeared into thin air so the kidnappers want $750,000 the note says that the group X people or person
07:42is willing to kill Robert is willing to kill Robert if they don't get what they want you have to
07:45believe
07:46that's true the note demands this occurs by April 8th it's already April 4th they've only got four days
07:57you're terrified you don't know what's happening you don't know where your brother is I know my parents
08:01were ready and willing to give them everything they wanted I mean we all were give them what they want
08:09my soul thought is you get Robert back we had the money however the consensus was that Tom should not
08:19pay the actual ransom monies even if you were to pay those monies there's just no guarantee that Tom
08:26is ever going to see his son again and the FBI says let us deal with this and we will
08:31recover your son by
08:32capturing the people that have him we didn't know what to think you just trust him and if they ask
08:38you
08:38to do something you do it you have faith in them so the first step in getting Robert back is
08:46to
08:46determine who is holding him captive who is it this demanding $750,000 you obviously always have to
08:56consider individuals that are close to the actual victim and one of the things that kind of brought
09:04our attention was the fact that Tom was going through a very difficult time with his wife Pam Wiles
09:12Tom and I separated in 2006 we sold our house in Melbourne I told him that I would like to
09:19have
09:19whatever the value of whatever the value of that house is to put away in a savings and he said
09:25all
09:25right he gave me that money and that amount was $750,000 well my my my there's someone else that
09:35says they
09:35want $750,000 Agent Kelly then learns that National Flight Services has kidnapping and ransom insurance on
09:45the senior employees of the company to include Robert Wiles so this loss of $750,000 that has been paid
09:54to
09:54the wife could be reclaimed from the insurance company as a ransom payment so logically is there
10:02any connection does Tom Wiles have some things to explain oh yes he does
10:15the FBI is deeply into the case of the disappearance of Robert Wiles
10:21could this kidnapping be an invention arranged by Tom Wiles for the sheer purpose of collecting money
10:31say bring Tom Wiles back in for a confrontive interview
10:37Tom Wiles gave all appearances of genuine grief and agony over the fact that
10:45his son was missing but we have to attempt to get to the bottom of this there is no pleasantness
10:52about police investigation and if your feelings get hurt by that well that's too bad I was cooperative
11:01they wanted to know what I knew we asked him about the kidnapping insurance he said his employees
11:09traveled to foreign countries business executives and business employees can be kidnapped in these
11:14countries and exorbitant dollar amount demands can be made for their safe return that's why Tom
11:23Wiles took out kidnapping insurance all right that's a reasonable enough explanation during the interview
11:30Tom Wiles clearly establishes during this time frame that he is in Toledo Ohio and further we had no
11:38emails we had no phone calls to indicate that he might be orchestrating this with anyone else behind the scenes
11:48Tom Wiles had nothing to do with his kidnapping it's for real
11:56for a few days nothing has been heard from Robert or the kidnappers and the critical date of April the
12:038th is fast approaching
12:04the ransom note indicated that $750,000 were to be placed on Robert Wiles's desktop
12:15so what ultimately was decided was that we would take coffee grounds of an appropriate weight for $750,000 in
12:25cash and we would place the coffee grounds inside the box
12:29so the simple plan is that when that person arrives to claim the money they're going to be arrested
12:38Robert's abduction has been kept a secret from all NFS employees no one knows
12:44but due to the nature of the ransom note indicating that the money is needed to be placed in Robert
12:50Wiles's office
12:51we needed a trusted confidant that Tom could place us with the individual that Tom Wiles provided to do that
13:02was Toby Holt
13:03the operations manager at National Flight Services Toby was running the facility in Lakeland
13:12Wiles trusts him explicitly
13:18so what we decide to do is get cameras into Robert Wiles's office
13:25we have to set up a VHS tape recorder and where do we set that right next door Toby Holt's
13:31office has the VHS recorder
13:36the day of the money drop finally arrives an FBI agent takes the box
13:41casually goes into Robert's office sits on the desk and closes the door
13:46returns to Toby's office and he and the FBI arrest team watch and wait
13:59we had Tampa SWAT come into National Flight Services they were hidden
14:04they were staking out the money you know in case somebody did come try to retrieve it out of Robert's
14:10office
14:11the trap is set all of our ducks are in a row as far as we're concerned and you always
14:22hold out a little
14:22bit of hope that there was going to be a pickup of these monies but that date comes and goes
14:28nothing is heard again from the kidnappers Robert never reappears and the money is never claimed
14:37agent Kelly is struck by the weirdness of this investigation nothing is matching up with anything
14:44he's ever experienced
14:49nobody picked it up why what what happened you know when we're wrong the whole thing was strange
14:57the uncertainty is real hard to learn to live with you just wait and you hope and you pray
15:04you get these thoughts in your mind of is he scared like is is he somebody like hurting him and
15:11like you
15:12have to push those thoughts out of your head it was terrible it was a terrible time
15:20so at that particular point in time there's a bit of a shift in the mentality of the investigators
15:25to open the investigation up and start soliciting the public's assistance in this matter
15:33the appearance of Robert Wiles said tonight this has been a horrifying experience
15:38the Toledo native disappeared in April he was last seen in Lakeland Florida
15:43you gonna throw them all back in yeah Robert was born in 1980
15:51he was a happy kid he went to Florida Air Academy for high school and then he went on to
15:59Bowling Green
15:59University and he was in the ROTC program for the Air Force and he did great
16:07Robert and I did a lot of fishing together we did a lot of boating together
16:13and he loved to be out on the water
16:17Rob was extremely compassionate but yet knew how to have fun
16:23my name is Robert Wiles and I'm from Toledo Ohio
16:27he had this way of speaking to people that kind of had them kind of bring their guard down a
16:32little bit
16:33and people just were drawn to him he was just that guy I loved being around him I've got a
16:39lot of good memories
16:43in homicide the victim is already gone they're deceased
16:48a kidnapping has an added dynamic as far as you can tell the victim is still alive
16:55your mission is to keep that from changing
16:58so now the question is where is he
17:01as part of the FBI's investigation into the kidnapping we deployed its evidence response team
17:10to the scene of national flight services
17:13it would be very important indeed if they could find a crime scene
17:17his vehicle is still parked in the lot
17:21that indicates he never left the place
17:23so the first thing to attack is the building
17:26we had agents and support people who are trained in evidence recovery
17:30basically combed over the entire hangar
17:35numerous individuals conducted a thorough search of Robert's office
17:42the entire upstairs office area
17:45and there was nothing that they found
17:47blood, any kind of hair, any kind of body fluids
17:51that would indicate that a murder happened inside that building
17:57he has disappeared from the face of the earth
17:59gone
18:00so we decided to interview national flight service employees
18:08now the money drop wasn't an open area
18:11it was in the office which to us made no sense
18:14the building itself there's security inside
18:18the alarms are set
18:20doors are locked
18:21if you don't have, you know, the key code or the card to get in
18:26it would be very difficult
18:27leading them to conclude
18:29that it appears to be an inside job
18:33but criminal background checks
18:35are run on all of these national flight employees
18:37and these records are clean
18:40so there's really nothing
18:42that is gained to solve this case
18:45from the interviews of the national flight employees
18:50the investigation is starting to get very cold
18:53no further contact from the perpetrators
18:55Robert remains in the cosmos
18:57and no evidence can be found
18:59connecting any particular person to the crime
19:02and then finally they get a break
19:05a man who does business with national flight services
19:08comes forward and says he has a tip about a possible suspect
19:13an individual by the name of Steve Lindsay was brought to our attention
19:19Steve Lindsay was a mechanic that worked at national flight services for a while
19:24we found there was a history with Steve Lindsay and Tom Wiles
19:29the FBI learned there was a comment made that Steve Lindsay
19:34if he had the opportunity would break a wooden chair
19:38over Tom Wiles' back
19:40gather up the splinters
19:42and basically shoot Tom Wiles
19:44with the brief loaded splinters
19:48now that's a pretty good line
19:52did he mean it?
19:53we need to find out
19:58FBI agents have been made aware
20:00of a former employee
20:01named Steve Lindsay
20:03who had been making threats
20:05against Tom Wiles, Robert's father
20:08that is serious
20:10and it's serious enough
20:11for the FBI to take a look at
20:13and do a thorough examination of Steve Lindsay
20:21the FBI learned
20:23that Steve Lindsay was exceptionally good
20:26at his job
20:27Steve Lindsay had
20:29a superior knowledge
20:31of the TPE 331 engine
20:36the problem was
20:37he had had some issues
20:39with a national flight services vehicle
20:42while drinking
20:46I remember having a discussion
20:48with Steve
20:49saying he had to quit drinking
20:51or we're going to
20:54have him doing any work for us
20:56Tom had given him
20:58chance after chance after chance
20:59Tom eventually fired him
21:02Steve begged for his job back
21:04and Tom had said
21:06I'm not hiring you back
21:07and he really got upset at Tom
21:10there was tension
21:11and outright anger
21:13and angry people are dangerous
21:19so the Bureau has to take a look
21:22at Steve Lindsay
21:23and say
21:23could he be perpetrating
21:25this scheme
21:26of the kidnapping
21:26of Robert Wiles
21:27to severely strike back
21:29at Tom Wiles
21:33all the agents believed
21:34it was an inside job
21:36because of the security
21:37of a jet maintenance facility
21:39but Steve Lindsay
21:41probably still has
21:42the access codes
21:43and maybe even the keys
21:48so he fits the bill
21:52so we are able to
21:55conduct an interview
21:56with Steve Lindsay
21:57when they ask him
21:59about his relationship
22:00with Tom Wiles
22:01he's not the least bit shy
22:03he hates Tom Wiles
22:05he admits to wanting
22:06to hurt him
22:08but Lindsay was adamant
22:10that he had no involvement
22:12he said Tom's one
22:14that had fired him
22:15and he wasn't really upset
22:18with Robert
22:20he comes across
22:21as believable
22:22but everybody says
22:23they didn't do it
22:24we still need more
22:27the investigators
22:29looked at all
22:29of his text messages
22:30and although Steve
22:32was a brilliant mechanic
22:33he was a very
22:36unsophisticated individual
22:37he wasn't very good
22:38at punctuation
22:39word syntax
22:41and he didn't have
22:42that level of sophistication
22:44that the ransom note
22:46would demand
22:48ultimately Steve Lindsay
22:50had to be eliminated
22:51as a subject
22:53so they've exhausted
22:54all leads
22:55and Robert
22:56is still missing
22:56but so is his cell phone
22:59as we know
23:00our cell phones
23:02are connected to us
23:03at the hip
23:03today
23:04and even back
23:05in 2008
23:07so what we did
23:09is we obtained
23:10his cellular telephone records
23:14we can see
23:15that Robert Wiles' phone
23:18is not only used
23:19on April 1st
23:20the day of the kidnapping
23:22his phone
23:24is also used
23:25on April 2nd
23:26his phone
23:27also continues
23:29to ping
23:29on Thursday
23:30April 3rd
23:31so whoever took
23:33Robert
23:33seems to have
23:34his cell phone
23:35and they're driving
23:36around with it
23:37when you're seeing
23:38the cell towers
23:39looking at his phone
23:41well it looked like
23:42he's traveling
23:43a toll road
23:44well now you got
23:45toll booths involved
23:46there was three
23:48toll booths out there
23:49on the Polk Parkway
23:50and they each take
23:51pictures of every car
23:52that passes through
23:53so what do we do
23:54we file a subpoena
23:56with the Florida
23:57Department of Transportation
23:58to obtain
23:59all of the video
24:00footage
24:00of the Turnpike
24:02toll booths
24:04we get Tom Wiles
24:06in
24:08Tom Wiles
24:09looks to see
24:11if there's any
24:11vehicles that
24:12he may recognize
24:13coming through
24:14the toll booth
24:14they're assuming
24:15that this is
24:16an inside job
24:17and maybe the car
24:18is a car
24:19that Tom will
24:20recognize
24:21as being one
24:22of his associates
24:23or employees
24:24or even a friend
24:27I just remember
24:29cars coming
24:30through the toll group
24:31on the Lakeland
24:33Freeway
24:34it took a long time
24:35to watch it
24:37Polk Parkway
24:38is a very busy place
24:39and hundreds of cars
24:40go through those booths
24:43call it what you will
24:44in a one in a million
24:45shot by Tom Wiles
24:48so he's watching
24:49this seemingly
24:50endless video
24:51and suddenly says
24:52stop the tape
24:52and he focuses
24:54on this car
24:55it's a BMW convertible
24:59and he says
25:00I know that car
25:02at first
25:03I didn't think
25:03it was possible
25:05lo and behold
25:07he picks out
25:08a silver BMW
25:09of his operations
25:10manager
25:11Toby Holt
25:14well I'll be damned
25:21Tom Wiles
25:23has identified
25:23Toby Holt's car
25:25passing through
25:26a toll booth
25:27on the Polk Parkway
25:28at the same time
25:30that Robert Wiles'
25:31cell phone
25:32is pinging off
25:32a tower
25:33at that location
25:35and that just
25:37becomes
25:37a powder keg
25:38moment
25:39in this investigation
25:42ironically
25:43who does
25:44Tom Wiles
25:44supply us
25:45as a trusted confidant
25:47Toby Holt
25:48the operations
25:49manager
25:49at National Flight
25:51Services
25:53when things
25:54start to come
25:55together
25:56and the pieces
25:56of the puzzle
25:57start to fit
25:58you can feel it
26:01after that
26:02I had come
26:03to the conclusion
26:04that Toby was
26:05a snake
26:06not only
26:07did he move
26:08from witness
26:09to subject
26:09he became
26:10a target
26:11in this investigation
26:14so now
26:15we are getting
26:16a subpoena
26:17for the cellular
26:18telephone records
26:19of Toby Holt
26:20we compare it
26:22to the cell records
26:23of the victim
26:24Robert Wiles
26:25and we see
26:26an exact
26:27same route
26:29that these
26:30two phones
26:31are traveling
26:32on Thursday
26:33April 3rd
26:342008
26:35two days
26:37after he disappeared
26:39that is a damning
26:41piece of evidence
26:41his bones tell him
26:43Holt's the guy
26:47I place a phone call
26:48to Toby Holt
26:49and I ask Toby
26:50if he can come
26:51to our office
26:52for additional interview
26:53readily agrees
26:56so they start
26:57by asking Toby
26:58his whereabouts
26:59on the day
27:00that Robert
27:00disappeared
27:01Toby Holt
27:02advises us
27:04on Tuesday
27:06April the 1st
27:07he sees
27:07Robert
27:08between
27:086 and 6.30pm
27:10he leaves
27:11National Flight Services
27:13and tells us
27:14that he's going
27:14to Hooters
27:15on South Florida Avenue
27:17in Lakeland
27:17it's a frequent
27:18watering hole
27:19for him
27:21after that
27:22he said
27:22he was checked
27:23into a hotel
27:23he was meeting
27:24with a mistress
27:25and then
27:26Agent Kelly
27:27hits him
27:27with the evidence
27:30the photographs
27:31of Toby
27:33on the Polk
27:34Parkway
27:35they were placed
27:37in front of him
27:37he looked
27:38at the photographs
27:39and readily admitted
27:40that's me
27:41that's my vehicle
27:42okay great
27:44so now
27:45I pull out
27:46the overlay maps
27:47that show
27:48the cellular routes
27:49of Robert Wiles'
27:50phone
27:50and Toby Holt's
27:52phone
27:53I push them
27:54towards
27:55Toby Holt
27:56and I ask him
27:57can you offer
27:58us an explanation
28:02Toby says
28:03Robert's phone
28:04must have been
28:04in somebody else's
28:05car
28:05the real kidnapper
28:07was trying
28:07to frame him
28:08and therefore
28:09was following him
28:11in his own car
28:12I had an immediate
28:13response for that
28:14I said
28:16Toby
28:16we sent teams
28:17of people
28:18to interview
28:19every driver
28:20five minutes
28:22in front of you
28:23and five minutes
28:25behind you
28:26all of the
28:28individuals interviewed
28:29did not
28:30know Tom Wiles
28:31did not know
28:33Robert Wiles
28:35once he learns
28:36that information
28:37his face
28:39from the shoulder
28:40blades
28:40up to the top
28:42of his head
28:42turn
28:44flush red
28:47and Toby
28:48shakes his head
28:49I don't have an
28:50explanation for you
28:51guys
28:51I'll tell you this
28:52I watch a lot
28:54of crime shows
28:54I know
28:56law enforcement
28:57can trace
28:57cellular records
28:59why would I do
29:00something like this
29:01they then asked
29:03Toby if they can
29:04search his car
29:05yeah I've got
29:06nothing to hide
29:06sure
29:08our evidence
29:09response team
29:10went down
29:11and searched
29:12that vehicle
29:13under the hood
29:15of the BMW
29:16inside of a
29:17white plastic
29:18trash bag
29:19further contained
29:20inside a
29:21handgun case
29:22was a 40
29:24caliber
29:246 hour
29:25weapon
29:25and also
29:26a magazine
29:30Kelly's first
29:31thought would
29:31be mine
29:32well for all
29:33the watching
29:34of cop shows
29:35you can't hide
29:36a gun worth
29:37of shit
29:37because now
29:38I've got the
29:39gun that you
29:40said you
29:41didn't have
29:42and then he
29:43says that
29:44sometimes he
29:45would put it
29:46there because
29:46he would
29:47travel in
29:48bad areas
29:49and he needed
29:50it for
29:51protection
29:52it was a
29:53far-fetched
29:54absurd answer
29:55are you going
29:56to be in a
29:57position to ask
29:58your muggers
29:58can you give
29:59me a few
29:59minutes so
30:00that I can
30:01lift up the
30:02hood of my
30:02vehicle
30:03unpack my
30:046 hour
30:0540 caliber
30:06it just
30:07didn't make
30:07any sense
30:09and Mr.
30:10Holt is not
30:10just a liar
30:11but a bad
30:12liar
30:12he's hammering
30:13nails in his
30:14own coffin
30:14lid
30:16but we
30:17had no
30:19lawful right
30:20to seize
30:21that weapon
30:22at that
30:22time
30:23there's not
30:24a body
30:24we have
30:25no legal
30:25grounds
30:25to charge
30:26him
30:26so Holt
30:27was able
30:28to leave
30:28the premises
30:28but we
30:29believed
30:30that Toby
30:31Holt
30:31was obviously
30:32involved in
30:33what ultimately
30:34happened to
30:34Robert Wiles
30:36everything about
30:37Toby Holt says
30:38he's a lying
30:39son of a
30:40bitch
30:40they now
30:41need to
30:41set about
30:41proving it
30:44there's a lot
30:44of legwork
30:45that goes
30:45into disproving
30:47his alibi
30:48of April
30:491st 2008
30:51we send
30:52agents
30:52to Hooters
30:54Hooters had
30:54video where
30:55you could see
30:56the entrance
30:56and exit
30:58doors
30:58and we
30:59watched video
31:00before and
31:01after the
31:02time frames
31:03and never
31:04saw Toby
31:06go in
31:06or out
31:09they then
31:09go to the
31:10hotel where
31:10he says he
31:11booked a room
31:12for he and
31:12a mistress
31:13and there
31:14he is
31:14on the
31:15cameras
31:15checking in
31:16going upstairs
31:17to the room
31:17within two
31:18minutes he
31:19drops a bag
31:20in the room
31:20comes back
31:21out and he
31:21leaves
31:23he leaves
31:24the Swan
31:25Hotel around
31:26915
31:26he doesn't
31:27come back
31:28till close
31:28to midnight
31:29that's an
31:30appreciable amount
31:31of time
31:31where he could
31:32be doing
31:32something else
31:34so where is
31:35he where did
31:35he go
31:39so we went
31:40back to the
31:41cellular telephone
31:42records
31:42there was so
31:43much more
31:44information in
31:45those cellular
31:45telephone records
31:46for instance
31:48there was a
31:48411 directory
31:49call at
31:50841pm
31:51on Tuesday
31:52April 1st
31:53the day of
31:53Robert's
31:54disappearance
31:54so one of
31:56the detectives
31:57responds to
31:58411 headquarters
31:59and says do you
32:00keep records
32:01of these calls
32:02oh yeah
32:03of course we do
32:04so they line up
32:05Holt's number
32:06and they said
32:07alright this call
32:08was forwarded
32:09to the Home Depot
32:10on South Florida
32:11Avenue in Lakeland
32:14why do you need
32:14a Home Depot
32:15at 850 at night
32:16when you're supposed
32:17to be in a hotel
32:18room that you're
32:19not in
32:22so we went to
32:23Home Depot
32:23and asked them
32:25for video
32:25and of course
32:26businesses will
32:27overwrite their
32:28surveillance
32:28so we asked them
32:29give me all the
32:30transactions
32:31that came through
32:31from 10 minutes
32:32to 9
32:33till you closed
32:34and there were
32:34two receipts
32:35both were cash
32:36purchases
32:37we see a purchase
32:38of 4 to 5 feet
32:40of husky
32:40black plastic
32:42vinyl sheeting
32:42in two rolls
32:43of duct tape
32:44the kind of
32:44supplies you would
32:45need if you
32:46want to dispose
32:47of a body
32:48we took all
32:49of that information
32:50and we came to
32:52the investigative
32:52conclusion
32:53that Toby Holt
32:55was the
32:56murderer
32:57in this matter
32:58there was no
32:59kidnapping
32:59there was two
33:00days of
33:00consideration
33:01how do I
33:02cover up
33:03a murder
33:05so now we
33:06have a shift
33:07a big shift
33:08in this
33:08investigation
33:09the problem
33:10was
33:11this is a
33:12nobody case
33:13we have
33:14no witnesses
33:16we have no
33:17weapon
33:17a knife
33:19a gun
33:19it is a very
33:21difficult case
33:22what the task
33:24force needs
33:25now
33:25is an aggressive
33:26prosecutor
33:27and they know
33:28just the guy
33:29I thought he was
33:31guilty as hell
33:31there was no
33:32question in my
33:33mind about that
33:34I'm like yeah
33:35that's what we
33:36want to hear
33:36you know
33:37let's roll
33:38so finally
33:39all the work
33:40has paid off
33:42but they have
33:43a problem
33:44they go to
33:45arrest him
33:45and he's not
33:46there
33:47we learned
33:47that he actually
33:48was in the
33:49country of
33:50Columbia
33:50at the time
33:52Toby was
33:53on a business
33:54trip working
33:55for a company
33:55out of the
33:56east coast
33:56of Florida
33:57the initial
33:58feeling was
33:59I hope he
34:00doesn't stay
34:01there you know
34:01it's gonna be
34:02a heck of a
34:02time
34:03you're trying
34:03to get him
34:03extradited
34:04back to the
34:04United States
34:05Columbia is
34:06not known
34:07for their
34:07cooperation
34:08for extraditions
34:09this is
34:10potentially
34:11an enormous
34:12problem
34:16Holt is in
34:17Columbia on
34:18business
34:19and the
34:20task force
34:20is worried
34:21they may not
34:21be able to
34:22force him
34:22back to the
34:23Colombian
34:23government
34:24it's a thought
34:25that crosses
34:25your mind
34:26obviously
34:27but then we
34:28found out
34:29that he
34:29was on
34:30the flight
34:30back to
34:30Orlando
34:38when he
34:39arrives at
34:39the airport
34:40there's a
34:41group of
34:41people waiting
34:42there to
34:42see him
34:43they're not
34:44happy relatives
34:45there are other
34:46people that have
34:47badges and
34:47guns
34:49Toby Holt
34:50didn't have
34:51the typical
34:51reaction
34:52I mean
34:52it wasn't
34:53like
34:53are you guys
34:54crazy
34:55it was kind
34:55like
34:56they got
34:56me
34:56let me
34:57think about
34:58what I
34:58can say
34:59to get
34:59out of
34:59this
35:04a Florida
35:05man sits
35:05behind bars
35:06tonight
35:06accused of
35:07killing
35:07and kidnapping
35:08Toledo
35:09native
35:09Robert
35:10Wiles
35:11he was
35:12charged with
35:12first degree
35:13murder
35:13kidnapping
35:14and extortion
35:17after he
35:18was arrested
35:18it's gut
35:19wrenching
35:19I mean
35:20it just
35:21rips your
35:21heart out
35:21but by
35:22then
35:23we all
35:24kind of
35:25assumed
35:25that that's
35:26what happened
35:27and so
35:28now we
35:28want to
35:28know
35:29what
35:29happened
35:29to
35:30Robert
35:33these
35:33detectives
35:34have turned
35:34up a
35:35number
35:35of
35:36circumstances
35:36that are
35:37quite
35:37suspicious
35:39but we
35:40need to
35:40find out
35:40what
35:41Toby Holt's
35:41motivation
35:42could be
35:42we currently
35:43don't have
35:44one
35:44but they're
35:45still looking
35:46we learned
35:47there was
35:48some animosity
35:49towards
35:49Robert
35:50because
35:50Toby Holt
35:51believed
35:51that he
35:52was essentially
35:52quote
35:54giving away
35:54revenue
35:55well
35:55that created
35:56tension
35:57because
35:57Toby Holt
35:58at the time
35:59was the
36:00general manager
36:01an substantial
36:02amount of
36:02his salary
36:03was based
36:04on the
36:05profit
36:05of the
36:06Lakeland
36:06facility
36:07Toby Holt
36:08felt
36:09that Robert
36:10was undercutting
36:11him
36:11and that
36:12was causing
36:12National Fly
36:13Service
36:14to lose
36:14money
36:15and by
36:15them losing
36:16money
36:16Toby's
36:17losing
36:18his bonus
36:18money
36:19as well
36:20based
36:21based on
36:21his
36:21financial
36:22records
36:23that the
36:23FBI
36:24went
36:25through
36:25we
36:26learned
36:27Toby
36:27lived
36:28way
36:28above
36:29his
36:29means
36:29Mr.
36:31Holt
36:31lives
36:32a
36:32questionable
36:32lifestyle
36:33he has
36:34at least
36:34a dozen
36:35girlfriends
36:36he had
36:37a number
36:37of confidants
36:38at National
36:39Flight
36:39that would
36:39cover for
36:40him
36:40in relation
36:41to
36:42his wife
36:42he was
36:43dating
36:44any and
36:45everybody
36:45he could
36:45meet
36:46you know
36:47playing the
36:48role
36:48you know
36:49going to
36:49the restaurants
36:50constantly
36:50and so
36:52I think
36:53it all
36:53caught up
36:54to him
36:56given the
36:57absence of
36:57a crime
36:58scene
36:58there is
36:59no way
37:00to know
37:00how this
37:01all transpired
37:02but some
37:03reasonable
37:03conclusions
37:04can be
37:04made
37:05through
37:05speculation
37:08I believe
37:09that there
37:09was some
37:09very bad
37:10blood
37:10between
37:10the two
37:11and it
37:11becomes
37:12a slow
37:12simmering
37:13pot
37:14on a
37:14stove
37:15and
37:15eventually
37:15it
37:16boils
37:16over
37:16and
37:17something
37:17awful
37:18comes
37:18of him
37:20there
37:20very well
37:21could have
37:21been a
37:21situation
37:22where they
37:23had it
37:23out
37:24where
37:25Robert
37:25says
37:26I am
37:26going to
37:27tell your
37:27wife
37:27about all
37:28these
37:29mistresses
37:29I'm going
37:30to expose
37:31you for
37:31that
37:31you're also
37:32going to
37:33be fired
37:35that leads
37:35to a
37:36physical
37:36altercation
37:40and
37:41perhaps
37:41Toby
37:41becomes
37:42overwhelmed
37:42with
37:43rage
37:45Reese
37:46in
37:46his
37:46gesture
37:46pulls
37:47out
37:47his
37:4740
37:48cal
37:51and
37:51uses
37:51it
37:55boom
37:56diddy
37:56boom
37:57diddy
37:57boom
37:57so long
37:58Robert
38:01and at
38:02that point
38:02we know
38:03that there
38:03is black
38:04plastic
38:04sheeting
38:05and two
38:05rolls
38:05of duct
38:06tape
38:06on April
38:06the first
38:07that has
38:08been purchased
38:08from Home Depot
38:13you would
38:14assume
38:14then that
38:15the body
38:15is wrapped
38:15in that
38:16and disposed
38:16of
38:20so now
38:21we get
38:21into
38:21speculation
38:23where did
38:23he dispose
38:24of the
38:24body
38:26we don't
38:27know
38:27it was
38:27never
38:27found
38:31every
38:32retention pond
38:33in this
38:33state
38:34there's
38:34alligators
38:37could that
38:38have
38:38been done
38:38yeah
38:41alligators
38:41are always
38:42hungry
38:43and things
38:43disappear
38:44bones and
38:44all
38:45gone
38:46disposal
38:47in Florida
38:48is as
38:49simple
38:49as it
38:49gets
38:51Toby
38:51then comes
38:52up with
38:52a kidnapping
38:53plan
38:53the
38:54$750,000
38:56ransom
38:56demand
38:57so connecting
38:58the dots
38:59it's perfectly
39:00understandable
39:01why the money
39:01wasn't picked
39:02up
39:02he knew
39:03it was a
39:03trap
39:08ultimately
39:09the
39:10case matter
39:11went to
39:11trial
39:12in 2012
39:13approximately
39:14a three-week
39:15trial
39:17it came
39:18down to
39:18obviously
39:19where a jury
39:19had to make
39:20a decision
39:20the verdict
39:22was guilty
39:23of manslaughter
39:24and guilty
39:26of extortion
39:27and he's not
39:28guilty of
39:29kidnapping
39:29because there
39:30was no
39:31kidnapping
39:31it was manslaughter
39:33because I had
39:33too many
39:34unanswered
39:35questions
39:35but he did
39:37something
39:38he did
39:39something
39:39and he needs
39:40to be accountable
39:41for that
39:41something that
39:42he did
39:43the judge
39:44gave him
39:4515 years
39:45for the
39:46manslaughter
39:46and 15 years
39:47for the extortion
39:48consecutive
39:49there is
39:50there is
39:51obviously
39:51some elation
39:52with that
39:53conviction
39:53however
39:54on the flip
39:55side
39:56you have
39:57the victims
39:58in this
40:00and you have
40:01to feel for them
40:02they have to
40:03put their head
40:03on a pillow
40:04every single night
40:04and know
40:06that their son
40:07isn't coming
40:08back
40:10I don't think
40:12there's ever
40:12going to be
40:12any type
40:13of peace
40:13that you find
40:15you just learn
40:16to live
40:17live your life
40:18and move
40:18along each day
40:20but you know
40:21the people
40:22who knew
40:22Robert
40:23love Robert
40:25they're not
40:25going to forget
40:26about Robert
40:27right across
40:28from me
40:28is my father
40:29Tom Wiles
40:30he was a good
40:31man
40:32I was very
40:33proud of him
40:38I miss him
40:39every day
40:40of my life
40:44I just
40:45can't believe
40:46it happened
40:51the torture
40:52it's done
40:53to the family
40:56they have
40:57no body
40:57to bury
40:58they have
40:58no degree
40:59of closure
41:00whatsoever
41:02justice
41:03is neither
41:03cruel
41:04nor kind
41:05it is merely
41:06indifferent
41:10on the next
41:11American detective
