00:00Homelessness can leave people exposed to danger, poor health and exploitation,
00:05especially when sleeping rough without shelter or support.
00:09In County Durham, police and a local charity say a new initiative is helping to reduce those risks,
00:15while guiding people toward longer-term solutions.
00:19Neighbourhood policing teams are now carrying specially designed sleep pods.
00:23Lightweight shelters intended to protect people from the elements during immediate crisis situations on the streets.
00:31The scheme began in Bishop Auckland, where officers have been working closely with a charity providing emergency housing,
00:38outreach and life skills support for vulnerable individuals facing complex challenges.
00:44Police community support officers refer people in crisis directly to the charity,
00:48including those dealing with addiction, domestic abuse or mental health difficulties,
00:54helping connect them with trained staff and volunteers.
00:57Outreach teams also patrol regularly, supported by a therapy dog used to build trust
01:03and encourage engagement with people who may otherwise avoid contact.
01:07The pods are described as a temporary measure, offering short-term protection
01:12while efforts continue to secure stable accommodation and wider support for each individual.
01:17Police leaders say the partnership is already helping prevent harm,
01:22reduce antisocial behaviour and lower demand on emergency services across the area.
