A fiery showdown in Washington has gone viral after Pete Hegseth faced intense questioning from Adam Smith over claims about Iran’s nuclear program.

During a heated House hearing, Hegseth stated that Iran’s nuclear facilities had been “obliterated” following U.S. strikes. But lawmakers quickly pushed back—pointing out that the war itself was justified on the basis of an “imminent nuclear threat.”

Smith’s sharp response — “You said we had to start this war because the nuclear weapon was an imminent threat. Now you’re saying it was completely obliterated?” — sparked a tense exchange that is now going viral.

00:00We had to start this war, you just said, 60 days ago, because the nuclear weapon was an imminent threat.
00:09Now you're saying that it was completely obliterated?
00:11They had not given up their nuclear ambitions, and they had a conventional shield of thousands of...
00:16So Operation Midnight Hammer accomplished nothing of substance.
00:20It left us at exactly the same place we were before.
00:23So much so that we had to start a war.
00:24Their facilities were bombed and obliterated.
00:26Their ambitions continued, and they're building a conventional shield of missiles.
00:31All right, let me try again.
00:32It's the North Korea strategy.
00:33You know this very well.
00:34The North Korea strategy was use conventional missiles to prevent anybody from challenging them so they could slow walk their
00:40way to a weapon.
00:41President Trump saw Iran at its weakest moment, took an action to ensure, in a way that only the United
00:47States of America could do with our Israeli partners.
00:49And yet they still haven't given up their nuclear weapons.
00:52So they haven't broken yet.
00:54Okay, we haven't gotten there yet.
00:56For all of the...
00:57Well, their nuclear facilities have been obliterated underground.
01:00They're buried and we're watching them 24-7.
01:03Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:03So we know where any nuclear material might be.
01:05Reclaiming my time for just a quick second here.
01:08We had to start this war, you just said, 60 days ago, because the nuclear weapon was an imminent threat.
01:16Now you're saying that it was completely obliterated?
01:19They had not given up their nuclear ambitions and they had a conventional shield of thousands of missiles.
01:25So Operation Midnight Hammer accomplished nothing of substance.
01:28It left us at exactly the same place we were before.
01:31So much so that we had to start a war.
01:44And yet they still haven't given up the nuclear weapons.
01:56And yet they still haven't given up the nuclear weapons.
02:00All right, one other question, if I could get to it.
02:03A question about Iran, and I'll give you the final 30 seconds to answer.
02:08Was Iran moving precipitously towards nuclear weapons capability, Mr. Secretary?
02:16Even after the obliteration of Midnight Hammer, what was clear is that the intention of Iran
02:21remained in the pursuit of nuclear weapons.
02:24And after, as hard as they were hit by Israel, it created an opportunity to get rid of the
02:29conventional shield.
02:30That's why we talked about missile production and the Navy and the defense industrial base,
02:34to set them back from blackmailing the region and the world in pursuit of nuclear weapons,
02:38because we understood how much they could continue to pursue them.
02:42They have 60% enriched uranium.
02:44They say they have enough to build 11 bombs.
02:47Even at 60%, is that enough to make a dirty bomb?
02:50Is that a yes or no?
02:51Does anybody have an answer for that?
02:54I mean, I wouldn't want to state anything that might be classified, so I'm going to talk
02:57about that in this setting.
02:58And by the way, in World War II, a congressman was in a closed briefing and learned that the
03:03reason the Japanese hadn't sunk any U.S. submarines is they didn't know our submarines could go
03:08below 250 feet.
03:09So we went out to the media and told them that, and we started losing submarines and losing
03:14American sailors.
03:15So a lesson for all of us in Congress, be careful how we, so thank you for considering
03:20that.
03:21I would say this, if they had a nuclear bomb, would that kill hundreds of people potentially,
03:26thousands of people potentially, or millions of people potentially?
03:32The history shows us what the lethal potential is of a nuclear weapon, and so you'd have
03:37to assume the higher end of that range, and given the radical nature of this regime and
03:42the likelihood of them to use it, it gives you a sense of the threat.
03:45Well, I think the threat is too great to wait, and I have to commend this President Trump for
03:49having the fortitude, and the Secretary of War, and the joint force for making sure we stop
03:55this threat.
