00:06consumption this latest report reveals that almost 27 tons of methyl amphetamine cocaine
00:12heroin and mdma was consumed between august 2024 and august 2025 a 21 increase on the previous year
00:22meth and heroin saw large increases five of the areas surveyed saw the highest heroin consumption
00:28recorded since the study began almost a decade ago the sampling that we do across the capital
00:33cities and the regional areas covers approximately 57 percent of the australian population so it gives
00:40us a really good representative sample of consumption more broadly and it also gives
00:45us a very good indication of trends over time the street value of the drugs consumed has climbed to
00:50over 14 billion dollars the study says we've seen more cocaine than ever being produced in the americas
00:56meaning there's a much higher supply on the market that's despite a large number of high-profile
01:02drug busts we also pay very high prices for a range of drugs here in australia compared to
01:07other countries around the world which obviously reinforces the motivation for serious and organized
01:12crime groups to continue trying to support and supply the australian listed drug market given the
01:17profitability and while alcohol and cannabis consumption are down more nicotine is being
01:22consumed potentially from the uptake of vaping
