00:24Thank you for listening.
00:56Thank you for listening.
01:00Thank you for listening.
01:09Thank you for listening.
01:40With more agony last season.
01:43Did Julian Alvarez's penalty clip his left boot after it left his right?
01:49Now, a new look at Leti are back in the final four.
01:53This time, Simeone's side are more fluid, more open, with wingers.
01:58Adam Ola Lutmann.
02:00The tireless Julian Alvarez leads the line.
02:03Alvarez! Oh, my word!
02:06The timeless Antoine Griezmann pulls the strings.
02:10Real are gone.
02:11Arsenal await.
02:13And Diego's dynasty could be three games away from its defining glory.
02:19Your commentator is Guy Mowgli.
02:22One year ago, Arsenal got this far, but no further.
02:27TSG were always a challenge one step beyond.
02:30This time, well, the Gunners have a great opportunity to reach the Champions League final for the first time in
02:3720 years.
02:39The Atletico Madrid line-up for this first half of the challenge shows four changes from their La Liga win
02:45against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.
02:48Slovakian defender David Hanchko is back from an ankle injury.
02:52Johnny Cardoso replaces the injured Pablo Barrios.
02:55And there are returns after missing the last two games for the former Premier League pair of Adam Ola Lutmann
03:01and Julian Alvarez.
03:03For Arsenal, two differences from the weekend against Newcastle.
03:07Gabriel Martinelli and Victor Jokeres come in with Everett Yeza on the bench and Kai Havertz ruled out by a
03:13groin strain.
03:14But Kai Osaka continues his comeback to fitness as a sub, as does Riccardo Calipiore.
03:21Madrid, great opportunity for Arsenal, but for it to come to fruition, they'll have to be absolutely on top of
03:27their game this week and next.
03:32Matweke, getting through the gap.
03:34Noni Matweke with the chip, Martinelli went for it.
03:37He can't be it behind him.
03:39And his view was obscured by Martinelli's attempt to finish.
03:43Really clever from Noni Matweke, stood it up.
03:46Over all the structured defenders.
03:50Maybe Martinelli would have been better, leaving it well alone for Encampier.
03:57Strange form, Atletico Madrid, lately.
04:00They beat Atletico Bilbao on the weekend, 3-2 at home.
04:04That came after a run of four La Liga defeats in a row.
04:09Here's Matou Lucherry.
04:11Lucherry to fire it across towards Alvarez.
04:15Alvarez stepping away from the tackles.
04:17Oh, that's a brilliant effort.
04:19Well saved, David Ryan.
04:23How Alvarez had the strength and awareness to get this sort of quality shot away is beyond me.
04:31Ryan watching like a hawk.
04:33Every step of it.
04:38Griezmann.
04:40Rogerio.
04:42He's headed over the bar by Alvarez.
04:46One shot save, one header too high.
04:50Nineteen goals this season.
04:53Nine of those have come in the Champions League.
04:56Which is a club record in a season.
04:59Koke.
05:01Luchman beat to it.
05:02Odegaard takes over.
05:04Matweke now.
05:05Matweke having a look at goal.
05:08Not far away from it.
05:10I think Oblak knew it was going wide.
05:13Well that's a great sign for Arsenal if not only Matweke is willing to have one look up
05:18and only think about the shot.
05:21And the chance to square the ball.
05:22Zubi Mendy was there.
05:23Martinelli was close.
05:25Looking at that, maybe Oblak wasn't so sure.
05:27He went for it.
05:33Alvarez has gifted Arsenal a ball.
05:35Giving it to Zubi Mendy.
05:36Zubi Mendy again.
05:38Jucharez goes down and the referee gives Arsenal a penalty.
05:47Atleti plays around the referee.
05:49Simeone's fingers wagging too in front of the fourth official.
05:53Jucharez's positioning was excellent.
05:54Getting in front of the defender.
05:56Waiting for the contact which was inevitable.
06:00Look at Hanchko's hands.
06:01They're wrapped around Jucharez.
06:05It is an Arsenal penalty.
06:07It is an Arsenal penalty.
06:08Victor Jucharez is on the spot.
06:11It's a huge moment in this semi-final tie.
06:16Jucharez fires in.
06:43Jucharez fires in.
06:48Arsenal are likely to have to weather a storm in a football sense and a very real sense.
06:54There's been thunder and lightning around in the air.
06:57I think the rate's coming.
06:58We'll just have to wait and see to find out whether the weather forecast is as accurate as a Victor
07:03Jucharez penalty.
07:04The line does come.
07:05We're told it's coming hard.
07:08The referee's going to give that as a foul.
07:12If he gave it for Jucharez in the penalty area first half, he's certainly going to give it against him
07:17for this one.
07:18Cardoso just moving.
07:19Like Jucharez did, I guess, to win the penalty in between opponent and ball and making sure the content was
07:26there.
07:27It's going to be Alvarez who's going to take on the shot.
07:32Side netting strike.
07:34Many in the Metropolitano thought it pulled off a wonderstrike there.
07:40And he got the curl as he intended.
07:42Just a little bit more needed.
07:44Don't think the keeper's getting there.
07:46Diego Simeone.
07:47Certainly he will have a plan of those black suited sleeves.
07:51Lovely little touch there from Antoine Griezmann.
07:55And now it's Adamola.
07:56Look, man!
07:57Straight at Ryan.
07:59Griezmann's effort.
08:00And his second one is saved somehow.
08:04Top reactions from Ryan.
08:08First save from Ryan.
08:10He was ready for whatever came next, but Gabriel did it for him.
08:14Let he go deep with that.
08:16Really deep.
08:16And Saliba puts him behind for another one on the other side.
08:22That was the follow-up attempt from Antoine Griezmann.
08:26Could only kick out at the frame of the goal in frustration.
08:36Griezmann.
08:36Now to Llorente.
08:38Now to Llorente.
08:39Handball shots.
08:41Strong handball shots.
08:42They're not going to let that go lightly.
08:46Referee didn't see it, but the cameras will have done if it happens.
08:56It's Ben White.
08:59It was a shinner from Llorente.
09:01It was a shinner from Llorente.
09:01Look how far the hands away from the body that is going to be.
09:04An Atletico Madrid penalty.
09:08The hand left dangling.
09:09The ball hits the hand.
09:10Penalty.
09:11Atletico is coming.
09:23David Reier gets his instructions.
09:25I don't think he's faced a penalty at all this season.
09:29The last one was in last year's Champions League semi-final at PSG in the second leg.
09:37And he saved it from Vitinha.
09:40Julian Alvarez.
09:42He's scored his last four penalties.
09:44He's 9 out of 10 for Atleti all told.
09:47He's put in a 9 out of 10 performance so far tonight.
09:51This might take him to top marks.
09:55And it does.
09:58Reier could only watch.
10:01That's an exceptional conversion of the penalty.
10:04And it might just be the kick that turns the tide.
10:11That's fantastic.
10:14Reier was grasping thin air.
10:17Just a slight wave of the right hand.
10:19See you later.
10:20Not getting near you.
10:22Now got to 25 Champions League goals in 41 games.
10:25Faster than any other Argentinian player.
10:28Which means yes.
10:29Faster than Messi.
10:31He got to 25 in 42 games.
10:33And faster than Sergio Aguero.
10:35He took 48.
10:39Lockman.
10:41Out of his feet to Griezmann.
10:43Reier was beaten by that.
10:45In comes Cardoso.
10:46Now it's Ruggieri.
10:49Griezmann again.
10:51Deflected wide.
10:53Arsenal clinging on.
10:55The storm has come.
10:58What an effort that is.
11:01From the evergreen and to Angriessmann.
11:32That was a test that was too ambitious.
11:33Napping.
11:38Here's Dichler Reis.
11:40Can he move into an advantageous position?
11:44Hide Saka.
11:48Eze.
11:49Here's Dichler.
11:53Here's Dichler.
12:00Here's Dichler.
12:02Look where his boot is.
12:04It's on the ball.
12:05That prevented Henschko's boot getting onto the ball.
12:08He had to go through Eze.
12:09Yeah.
12:09It's only a tiny touch.
12:11But by the standards of everything we see in the top leagues.
12:14It's a touch enough.
12:18Well, I wouldn't want to make this decision.
12:20Is that enough to force Eze off balance and to the floor?
12:26Here we go.
12:28No penalty.
12:30Oh, Mikan Arteta will be livid.
12:37Simeone is relieved.
12:39It's come up on screen now.
12:41Athletic player number 17 did not commit a foul on the opponent.
12:45But there you go.
12:45Short sweep.
12:47Well, that will be talked about.
12:52Eze.
12:55It's not getting stronger again.
13:01Mosquera.
13:02Eze.
13:02It's come back to Mosquera.
13:05Up in the air from Oblak.
13:07Saka into the mix.
13:10Trossard.
13:13An absorbing first leg.
13:15It's been tense from the start.
13:17Second leg will only be worse.
13:19Atletico Madrid won.
13:21Arsenal won.
13:23I mean, the whole sequence starts the story.
13:25I mean, it's a clear contact.
13:26You make the decision.
13:27You can't overturn that decision when you have to look at it 13 times.
13:31It's just at this level is completely unacceptable.
13:33Obviously, it's a wrong decision and it's a wrong decision and it changes the course of the time.
13:37The referees, in the end, he chucked it and he decided that it wasn't and we agree with him.
13:44I think in the first half we controlled the game quite well, I think, and had a few good opportunities
13:52to score, managed to score out of one of them.
13:56And then I think in the second half they started much better.
14:00Maybe they served to get a goal eventually.
14:03Yeah, tough game.
14:05We know it's a tough place to come, but yeah, it's only half time.
14:08We are in an incredible position.
14:10Semifinal of the Champions League.
14:11We have to play in front of our people.
14:13It's in our hands and that's it.
14:15And I recover and full on.
14:18But there's only one place to start and, Stephen, we're going to start with you on the Eza penalty, which
14:22was given on the pitch and then obviously overruled.
14:27And there was a little bit of discord and disagreement when we were watching this live, wasn't there?
14:31Yeah, I think this is going to split opinion.
14:33I really do.
14:33I think there's going to be a lot of people watching at home thinking, I can see contact.
14:37I think when you see the initial sort of angle here, you do think there is a touch on Eza's
14:44foot.
14:45And you see it as he steps across there.
14:48I just don't think there's enough contact, if any contact.
14:52Now, that one looks like there is enough and it looks like there's clear contact.
14:56But you've got to challenge for the ball at some point.
14:59You've got to go toe-to-toe, if you like.
15:02That one there is the one that you watch and you think there's not enough contact.
15:07And Eza almost expects it to happen and invites the challenge and then goes down.
15:12And so, for me, I don't think there's enough to give a penalty in that incident.
15:17I think you've described that very, very well, but like in a kind of safe way.
15:20You said you don't think it's enough to give a penalty.
15:22But I think for most people, the discussion is around, is it enough to overturn the penalty?
15:26That's the issue.
15:27Yeah, because when we first saw it, and this is myself included, I thought, you know, it's a penalty.
15:32But the more I sort of watched it back, like, that bit there makes it look like it's going to
15:37be really clear and obvious.
15:38And he's going to be stepping onto Eze's foot, onto Eberra's foot.
15:40But the fact is, like, it doesn't finish that way.
15:43Then you start to see some more angles and you start to sort of doubt yourself.
15:46And I think in some ways, the video system referee has probably done a good job by allowing the referee
15:50a chance to see it again.
15:51Yeah.
15:52And the referee could have said it's still a penalty.
15:54But the fact that he didn't means that he didn't see enough.
15:56Had he stuck with his decision, do you think, you know, it wouldn't have been perhaps on field, you know,
16:02and not gone and looked again?
16:04Do you think that would have been the fair decision?
16:07Would that have been right?
16:07Would you have been happy with that?
16:09I've got a bit lost now with what we're meant to be doing with penalties.
16:12To me, that isn't a clear and obvious error, which I think is still the bar.
16:16They may have changed it several times since this programme started.
16:19But that's not a clear and obvious error.
16:20You can see why he's made that decision.
16:21There is one angle where it looks like there's contact.
16:23Yeah.
16:24And there's a couple where, to be honest, you can't really tell.
16:26Because the shot's not right.
16:28I'm surprised it was overturned.
16:30Sorry, overturned by him, by the referee.
16:33Because you're talking about the VAR now.
16:35You're surprised that the VAR have called him over.
16:37No, no, it's the referee's decision.
16:38But it does seem to be the case that if the VAR calls the referee over.
16:41We could spend a lot more time on this.
16:42We've got loads of penalties.
16:44What's next?
16:44Yeah.
16:45Well, we're going to go straight to Ben White's handball, actually.
16:47And, Nadim, you can have a little look at this.
16:49Because there is consistency in the inconsistent interpretation of the rules, isn't there?
16:54Yeah, there's a disappointing consistency with the way that UEFA handballs are given.
16:59And I think as far as the game goes, if your arm is anywhere away from body at all, it
17:04doesn't
17:04matter whether it flicks off your leg, you know, flicks off somebody else.
17:06If it hits your arm, it seems like the referee is going to give these decisions.
17:10And they seem very quick to be able to do so.
17:11And even we saw yesterday with Alphonso Davies, he's come off his leg and he's hit his arm.
17:17Ousmane de Bele is adamant that's a penalty.
17:19If we're in the Premier League and we see that, that's not going to be given as a penalty.
17:22I think most people say that's not a penalty.
17:24But in Europe, the consistency is there.
17:26Because that was yesterday.
17:27This was today.
17:28And if there's another one in the next few games, it'll be given again.
17:30And to be fair to Arteta, he did say after the game that UEFA have been really consistent,
17:34that that is a penalty in UEFA competitions, which I think most of us probably disagree with.
17:38What's strange for me is that it relies on a really strict interpretation of IFAB's rules,
17:43the body that sets the actual laws.
17:46UEFA seem to have taken that really literally, which I don't think they have to do.
17:50That's a conscious choice.
17:52But that feels to me like a punishment outweighing a crime.
17:54And it's not consistent with how we see the Premier League operate, is it?
17:58But obviously, we're going to break up the penalty incident, Stephen, actually.
18:02There is another one to come, don't worry.
18:03But you are going to look at the fact that actually the second half played out very differently for Atletico
18:07because of a tactical tweak.
18:09Yeah, and at half-time, they decided to take Simeone off and bring on Robin Lamont.
18:15And they went to a back five.
18:17And you see here, Luckman and Llorente were the wide players.
18:19Griezmann and Alvarez become the forward two, the link up between these two players.
18:23And it was almost 4v4, if you like, going forward.
18:27And it caused Arsenal problems.
18:29Luckman got in here.
18:30You see, Griezmann had an opportunity as it falls back to him.
18:33It's a really good block from Gabriel.
18:35But the way that they set themselves up, they had the two wing-backs,
18:40but Ruggieri on this left-hand side and Llorente on the right.
18:43And Ruggieri's got brilliant movement.
18:45He's got athleticism.
18:46But Luckman's position, that touch is absolutely brilliant.
18:49But it causes a problem now for right-sided centre-half, right-back.
18:52They're scared of Luckman.
18:55And then Ruggieri plays that ball in.
18:56Griezmann hits the bar off this opportunity.
18:59So they were spreading the back line of Arsenal as much as they could in certain situations.
19:05And then you see the two forward players really stretching the game here.
19:08You'll see the way that Atletico players drop deep.
19:12And now you've got runners in behind and you've got spaces in behind that midfield.
19:17Lovely little ball from Griezmann in behind and then runners beyond.
19:20And it just felt that Atletico made sure that they isolated in 1v1 situations.
19:26Luckman possibly should do a little bit better here.
19:28Maybe has a little bit more time.
19:30But when you look at Luckman in 1v1 situations, he's just brilliant in here.
19:34Arsenal defend it well.
19:35But watch the way that they ring-fence it.
19:37They make it so difficult to get out.
19:39And then you'll see here, Hanko steps in, wins the ball back.
19:43And then they're on the attack again.
19:45And then they get a strike and a goal from Molina.
19:47But the way that Arsenal sort of struggled in this second half was much to the credit of Diogo Simeone.
19:55Well, they were absolutely taken out of the game, weren't they?
19:57They were nullified.
19:58Any kind of threat that came from them.
19:59Look at that.
19:59You know, that is incredible.
20:00That is between the 45th and the 84th.
20:03Because actually they rallied a bit in the last 10 minutes or so, didn't they?
20:06Yeah, the Eze penalty actually seems to take the sting out of Atletico a little bit.
20:09They lost their way a little bit for maybe five or ten minutes after that and had a bit of
20:13another sort of surge right towards the end.
20:16But I think in that sort of half an hour period, Simeone will have seen enough, particularly from Griezmann, to
20:22think they can hurt Arsenal in London.
20:23The question might have been Julian Alvarez went off injured.
20:26If he doesn't play, that's a massive boost for Arsenal.
20:29He had four shots and eight touches in the opposition box, Griezmann.
20:32So, yeah, he really did in those 40 minutes or so come to life, didn't he, for them?
20:36It all started for Arsenal from Jokeres and a penalty that he won and then scored.
20:43Let's have a look at his first half, shall we?
20:45For sure, yeah.
20:45I think his first half was really good.
20:47And it's what Arsenal needed because it's a tough place to come.
20:49But you need some of that strength, some of that physicality and the direct play that he has here running
20:53down that left-hand side.
20:54Like Llorence, the full-back for Atletico Cheson there, he's big, he's strong, but Jokeres is stronger.
20:58What I like is the fact that it finishes with a great ball back to Odegaard.
21:02On a different moment, maybe Odegaard scores that.
21:04But here we see how he wins that penalty.
21:06And he finds himself in a good position and immediately opens up his body to the goal.
21:10And the defender's in the wrong position.
21:11But Jokeres, with the strength that he has and the position that he has, means that he has to be
21:15fouled.
21:15And then once he gets up, he's got a chance to go and take that penalty.
21:19I think Oblak, the goalkeeper, has probably created somewhat of a gap between his arms there.
21:23But the strike from Jokeres certainly was there.
21:25And at half-time, Arsenal were winning 1-0.
21:27And I think, for the most part, it's down to Jokeres.
21:29And they are going to need him.
21:30Obviously, Havertz is out now.
21:32And they've got a very, very important few weeks ahead.
21:36So a performance like that and the contribution that he made tonight is heartening, obviously, for Mikel Arteta, isn't it?
21:41Yeah, it is to a certain degree.
21:43I just think he's more suited to away games.
21:45I think he's better at being your focal point, holding the ball up, drawing fouls him, making life difficult.
21:50When you're going to be asked to dominate the ball at home in the next game, is he capable of
21:55doing that?
21:56Is he capable of scoring that important goal?
21:58He scores a lot of penalties, Jokeres.
22:00But he needs to make sure he's getting in better positions to score from open play.
22:04He's on 19 goals now.
22:06The only players ahead of him are Thiago and Haaland, who's way, way, way ahead.
22:10And that's what they brought him in to do, wasn't it?
22:12To score 20-plus goals this season.
22:13Yeah, it's funny, because that's what we sort of thought they might need to get over the line of the
22:17title, was a $20, $25 season strikeout.
22:19It's only 12 in the Premier League, so it depends where you want your $20 to be.
22:23It just feels as though he is a little bit short of that kind of absolute elite level from this
22:28first season.
22:29Maybe next season he's better when he's settled a little bit more.
22:31But at the moment, I'm not sure he's quite in that class that maybe Arsenal fans were expecting.
22:36Is that a scoreline that Mikel Arteta tonight will feel comfortable with taking back to the Emirates next week?
22:41I think so.
22:42I think so.
22:42I think we showed earlier how much they suffered in that second half.
22:45And the fact that they came away from the game with a 1-1 draw, knowing you're going to have
22:4860,000 of your own fans in that second leg next week.
22:52I think overall they'll take it, because he knows he wasn't perfect, but they can get better.
22:55OK. Brace yourselves, guys, and settle in for this one.
22:59I mean, this is why you've stayed up, isn't it?
23:01Holders PSG taking on six-time winners Bayern Munich ahead of last night's game.
23:06They were the two highest-scoring teams in the competition, and they did not let us down.
23:11Commentary comes from Steve Wilson.
23:14A match-up which would have been fit for the final again.
23:18Bayern have actually won each of their last five UEFA matches against PSG,
23:23including a win here on match day four this season.
23:27But Paris Saint-Germain won the FIFA Club World Cup meeting in Atlanta in July,
23:32when Luis Hernandez and William Pacho were sent off,
23:35and Musiala broke his leg and dislocated his ankle.
23:39Safe to say that there is history.
23:41The only real decision for Luis Enrique was Barcola or Due.
23:46As expected, he's gone with Due, so no changes from the second-leg victory at Anfield.
23:51Barcola on the bench.
23:52Where the return of Fabian Ruiz from a knee injury has bolstered their options.
23:58The last club to successfully defend the Champions League was Real Madrid eight years ago.
24:04Vincent Kompany, who is suspended for tonight's game after three yellow cards,
24:09makes two changes to the XI, which saw off Real Madrid in the second leg of the quarterfinal.
24:15The fit again, Musiala for Gnabry, and Alphonso Davies for Lima at left-back.
24:23After huge anticipation, it's arguably the two most informed sides in Europe who meet up in the semi-final first
24:34leg.
24:37Xair Emery, Carrizcalia, here's danger.
24:41Davies got his head on it.
24:43Luis Diaz has it for Bayern, and he'll charge away downfield.
24:47Luis Diaz ploughing a bit of a lone furrow, but Olise's to his right-hand side,
24:51and he looks to use Michael Olise.
24:55Harry Kane, Kimmich, and touched off beautifully for Luis Diaz.
25:02William Pacho, it's a penalty kick.
25:04William Pacho lunged at Luis Diaz, and the referee, Sandro Scherer, says penalty.
25:12It's a brilliant run by Luis Diaz.
25:17Kimmich touched off to Luis Diaz.
25:22William Pacho says he got the ball.
25:25Well, he certainly did get the ball with the second movement, but not with the first.
25:32Penalty to Bayern Munich.
25:35And you know what this means.
25:37It means Harry Kane.
25:42Scores for the 54th time this season.
25:48And more importantly, gives Bayern the lead in the semi-final.
25:56Absolutely no doubt about it at all.
26:00Sending Safanov the wrong way.
26:03Harry Kane and Bayern strike first in this semi-final.
26:11Dwayne knocks off it.
26:13No foul.
26:14Here's Harry Kane.
26:15Olise to his right.
26:16Olise!
26:18Massive moment.
26:20Off the line by Marquinhos after Safanov had half-smothered the shot.
26:29Olise goes to ground.
26:31It's no foul.
26:32Well, it was very nearly two in two minutes here.
26:35That is such a crucial stop.
26:37It took all the pace off it, allowing Marquinhos to make sure it didn't sneak in.
26:43That's a really, really big let-off for Paris Saint-Germain.
26:52Oh, that's a great ball.
26:54Dembele will reach this.
26:56Dembele for PSG.
26:57He's put it way wide of goal.
26:59Way wide of goal from Ousmane Dembele.
27:03Well, you can scarcely believe that he's missed it and missed it by so much.
27:37That's a good ball.
27:39He's in trouble here and knowing what Paris Saint-Germain is going to do is very, very different from stopping
27:45him doing it.
27:45That is fantastic.
27:48That is fantastic.
27:48PSG won, Bayern won.
27:50We've only played 25 minutes of this semi-final.
27:54We could easily, easily have had two goals apiece.
28:03Luis Diaz.
28:09He lifts it.
28:13He's got away from Nuno Mendes again.
28:15He's done that two or three times.
28:17Takes on Marquinhos.
28:18Goes along the by-landing.
28:20Hits the post.
28:20And Safinov clutches it.
28:23Well, he's so full of pace, so full of tricks, so full of confidence.
28:26Got away from Nuno Mendes and from Marquinhos.
28:29Kept the ball in play and it rebounded onto the post on Sean Neves.
28:33Now here's Desiree Douai.
28:35And that is only just wide.
28:37He wants a corner.
28:39What about this game?
28:40You cannot take your eyes off it.
28:41Brilliant from Desiree Douai.
28:43I think he has a case there.
28:45He just flicked off the toe of Jonathan Tarr's boot.
28:48And it is a corner to Paris Saint-Germain.
28:51Dembele is going to take this.
28:56And it's in!
29:00Jao Neves with the header.
29:03Paris Saint-Germain two.
29:04Bayern Munich one.
29:06And they've turned it around.
29:09The European champions.
29:13Jao Neves with the header.
29:16He makes that run.
29:19And Musiala didn't really go with him.
29:21Didn't get tight enough.
29:23It's a brilliant header.
29:25And Neuer could not quite get his fingertips to it.
29:3035 minutes into this enthralling semi-final.
29:34Which is promising to become one of the classics of its type.
29:41Dembele's pass is glorious.
29:43It's Desiree Douai!
29:47Well, some of the football in the first half of the first leg of this semi-final has been from
29:54another planet, from both sides.
29:57Absolutely brilliant.
30:06Olisse in a really good position.
30:08Olisse in a really good position.
30:10Brilliant!
30:16What a game!
30:18What a game!
30:20It's 2-2!
30:24And these two sides are really serving up something sensational here, for both the best form of defence's attack, and
30:32this has been one of the best first halves of football you could ask to see.
30:48And they're claiming a penalty, Alfonso Davies with the block.
30:51Fired Scalier!
30:54Saved by Manuel Neuer.
30:56Sandro O'Shea is clearly in communication with Carlos del Cerro Grande, the VAR.
31:02Wow.
31:05Do you know what?
31:06In Europe, this might be given.
31:09The Spanish VAR thinks this is a penalty.
31:15I mean, that movement of the left arm away from his body is making himself bigger, which you're not allowed
31:20to do.
31:20But it does flick off his midriff.
31:23He's giving it.
31:25It's a penalty to Paris Saint-Germain in the last seconds of the first half.
31:32More drama in this game.
31:36Dembele.
31:38Facing Manuel Neuer.
31:42And it's in!
31:46The fifth goal of the first half, of the first leg, of an unbelievable Champions League semi-final.
31:57Paris Saint-Germain 3, Bayern Munich 2.
32:02The first ten minutes of the second half have gone by without the score being added to, which is somewhat
32:10surprising, given the first half.
32:12Fittina with a lovely ball.
32:14Hakimi.
32:14Dembele is in the middle.
32:16Pulled back.
32:17Oh, they both missed it.
32:18But Karol Scalier didn't!
32:21And for the first time tonight, one of these two brilliant sides has a two-goal advantage.
32:30Karol Scalier with the finish.
32:33Paris Saint-Germain 4.
32:35Bayern Munich 2.
32:38Well, it's a great ball into a great run.
32:41And Hakimi, with yet another assist, by the way, pulling it back into the path of Dembele and Zaya Emery,
32:50who both jumped over it.
32:52And Karol Scalier sweeps it into the Bayern net.
32:56And it's 4-2.
33:02Musial and Kane brilliantly done.
33:05Konrad Leiber.
33:06What a move this is.
33:07The pass, though, was just away from Luis Diaz.
33:09And it's cleared to Desiree Dwayne.
33:12And PSG on the counter are as good as anybody, if not better.
33:19Dwayne.
33:20Dembele.
33:21Oh, he's done it!
33:25He's beaten Neuer in his near post.
33:27It's 5-2.
33:30It's the game that keeps on giving.
33:33PSG 5.
33:36Bayern Munich 2.
33:39And Vincent Kompany stuck in the heavens.
33:42Can do nothing about it from there.
33:47Dwayne does really well.
33:49Dembele is clearly onside.
33:51He still has an awful lot to do.
33:54And Manuel Neuer is beaten for the fifth time tonight.
33:59And Dembele opens up a three-goal advantage.
34:13Diaz.
34:14Hikini couldn't shake off Luis Diaz.
34:19And it is a free kick to Bayern for that challenge.
34:25Hikini trying to grab Luis Diaz, who wouldn't be grabbed.
34:30Bayern free kick.
34:31Joshua Kimmich to take.
34:34Kimmich with the delivery.
34:36And in!
34:38Did Upamecano get a touch?
34:40It's got in.
34:41And he's claiming it.
34:43Kimmich with the free kick.
34:46Upamecano with the tiniest glance.
34:49Yet another goal.
34:515-3.
34:54Upamecano for Bayern.
34:57Hikini.
34:58Hikini.
34:59Who is, of course, now on a hat-trick.
35:01Upamecano did well to take it from him.
35:05Here's Kane.
35:07Kane.
35:09Oh, brilliant touch from Luis Diaz.
35:11Luis Diaz!
35:16The flag is up.
35:19This is going to be checked.
35:22Guadalupe Porres Ayuso says offside.
35:25This is going to VAR to be checked.
35:30This is going to be such a tight decision.
35:33It's a fantastic finish by Luis Diaz.
35:38It's a goal!
35:40It's a goal for Bayern.
35:42The goal for Luis Diaz.
35:44PSG 5.
35:46Bayern 4.
35:48Bayern have scored twice in four minutes here.
35:53Well, Harry Kane's ball into Luis Diaz.
35:56The control is fantastic.
35:59The finish is every bit as good as the control.
36:03And we have nine goals and counting.
36:12Fabio Ruiz.
36:13That's a good ball.
36:14It's Pitina.
36:16Three up here.
36:17Four with Hakimi getting up there as well.
36:20Sonny Mayulu makes a great little run and hits the woodwork.
36:28Mayulu hits a tremendous hit.
36:31Smashing the woodwork.
36:38And the referee blows his whistle.
36:42And anybody who has seen this first leg of the semi-final is unlikely to forget it in a hurry.
36:49And the good news is there is a second leg to come next week.
36:54It's finished in the Parc des Princes.
36:57Paris Saint-Germain 5.
36:59Bayern Munich 4.
37:02It was amazing.
37:03Yeah.
37:04I think the best match I've ever managed as a coach.
37:09Amazing rhythm.
37:11Both teams trying to play offensive football, trying to show their quality.
37:16And I think everybody has fun looking at the match.
37:22Yeah.
37:22Happy because we won.
37:24Bayern Munich 4.
37:26They only lost this season three matches.
37:28It means we did it great.
37:31Nine goals.
37:32You know, we'll have to watch it back and to really digest what happened.
37:36But, yeah, overall the fact that, you know, we was 5-2 down in the tie away from home
37:40and we found a way to claw it back to 5-4 and take it into the Allianz with everything
37:45to play for next week.
37:46I'm really proud of the boys.
37:47Everyone is giving everything.
37:49So, I don't know.
37:51We always speak about, you know, what you want to give to your fans.
37:54I think from the moment you give this, it's very, very tough to disappoint.
37:59And then after, it's about the result.
38:01But we had chances, a lot of chances.
38:04And there's still a home game.
38:08So, we have still time to score those chances.
38:12An incredible game.
38:13I mean, superlatives don't really do it justice.
38:15But try.
38:16Give me some with 24 hours reflection.
38:20Honestly, it's, I can't say, just, I don't know what to say.
38:22It's just memorable, isn't it?
38:23You know, that's one of the best performances in games that I've seen from an attacking standpoint.
38:27And what I love is, like, Vincent Kompany, who wasn't even able to be on the sideline there.
38:31As a defender, a legendary defender in the Premier League, he's seen his side concede five goals.
38:36And you can see by the look in his eyes, he's very confident for the next week.
38:38He's doubling down.
38:39He's doubling down, tripling down, yeah.
38:41The highest praise I can give is that I felt quite guilty sending my son to bed at half-time.
38:46He said the second half will never be this good, son, honestly.
38:49I'll tell you about it in the morning.
38:51OK, we're going to have a little bit more detailed look about how these sides contributed to such an epic
38:56encounter.
38:56Stephen is at the screen.
38:57He's having a look at it from the buy-in side of things.
39:02Yeah, Gabby, we're going to look at one of the most formidable front lines in Europe.
39:05And it's by Munich's front line.
39:07They're absolutely incredible at the way that they move, the way that they play, the way that they interchange.
39:13You'll see here, the forward three here are highlighted.
39:16And it's not the usual three.
39:17You've got Musiala, Kane and Alise.
39:20Diaz is that little bit deeper where he's tracking Hakimi.
39:22But what is very evident is that you get two wide players.
39:26So this time you've got Alise and you've got Musiala.
39:30You've got Diaz through the middle.
39:31And you've got Harry Kane just sitting in that playmaker role, if you like.
39:34As he plays this ball into midfield now, you'll see there's a flat-back four from Paris Saint-Germain.
39:39And Marquinhos has got a problem, but he's got two runners now, Paco.
39:43And that spaces him behind him.
39:45It causes him so many problems.
39:47A little one-two.
39:48And that's what draws the penalty for Bayern Munich.
39:51This time Musiala winning the ball.
39:54You see Harry Kane dropping deep.
39:55Runners beyond him.
39:56You've got Alise and Musiala.
39:58Alise probably should do better with that opportunity.
40:01But this is the one where you look at Musiala's position now.
40:04He's that deeper player in that number ten, if you like.
40:06Then he realises, now Diaz is in that deeper position.
40:10So he has to make that centre-forward position.
40:12You've got Harry Kane on that far left-hand side.
40:15Alise, outstanding on the night.
40:17He just caused Mendes so many problems time and time again.
40:20He can go left foot, right foot, inside, outside.
40:23Very comfortable.
40:24And then you see Diaz there just wringing that edge of the area.
40:27And we talk about Harry Kane being the playmaker, that number ten.
40:30Well, this time it's someone else.
40:31It's Alise.
40:32Alise drops deep into that position.
40:34And Mousiala running in behind.
40:37And Alise just creating that magic.
40:38Brilliant finish from him.
40:40And then the pass of the night.
40:42Arguably the goal of the night.
40:44You see Harry Kane, we talked about him being in that number ten position, that playmaker position.
40:48Mousiala now playing as a centre-forward.
40:51Diaz in behind Marquinhos.
40:53The way to pass, the run and this, the touch.
40:56It's absolutely phenomenal.
40:57It's brilliant from Luis Diaz.
40:59He just gets Marquinhos in a position where he's not comfortable.
41:03Touch with the outside of the foot.
41:04You'll see Marquinhos there trying to break the little feint.
41:07It's beautiful.
41:08It just sits Marquinhos on his heels.
41:11And the finish is outrageous from Luis Diaz.
41:14And they caused the Paris Saint-Germain defence.
41:17So many problems all game.
41:19But the thing is, is that it's this trio who get all the credit.
41:22But it's actually the four players.
41:25And you take into Mousiala.
41:27And you've also got Serge Gnabry who play a part in that.
41:29It's 100 goals in all competitions.
41:32And we've still got six more games to add to that.
41:34And they can add to that tally.
41:36Thank you, Stephen.
41:38Well, newspapers in France and Germany were understandably full of praise for last night's spectacle.
41:42No translation needed in L'Equipe, which calls the match football total or total football.
41:49Adding that the return leg should be another thriller.
41:52The headline in build is thanks for this football night.
41:55But the German tabloid also says that Bayern gave PSG too much space.
42:01So, Stephen's very brilliantly articulated how it's not actually a front three.
42:05There's a four there.
42:07Are you going to tell us the same thing for PSG about their attack?
42:09Listen, I like your front three.
42:11I'll raise your mind.
42:12I'll be doing a bit of PSG action here.
42:14Let's see it.
42:15And I think it's really clever in terms of how they do it.
42:18Because they're one of the best attacking sides in European football.
42:21And in these three, they're so dynamic, so good on the ball.
42:24But there's an awareness about running into space as well.
42:26This here from Kratz Scalia when he gets the ball.
42:28And as soon as he gets it there, he's thinking about end products.
42:31And just a little touch there takes it to the side.
42:33And what an incredible finish.
42:34And this is how they play throughout the game.
42:36And it's not just the front three.
42:37It's Hakimi, the right back, always coming to support the play.
42:40Through here now, Desiree Dewey, one of the quickest players on the pitch.
42:42He finds the space.
42:43And now here come the front three.
42:45Again, trailed on the far side by Hakimi.
42:48And the danger they can bring in what feels like a split second.
42:51And it always ends with a shot, with an assist, or, you know, with a goal.
42:55And it's so, so impressive.
42:56The energy that they have, the skill that they have, the timing, the combinations.
43:00Again, this started off in their defensive third.
43:02But we blink.
43:03And before you know it, Desiree Dewey is going through on the Bayern Munich goal.
43:06And he's unlucky to just drag this shot wide.
43:08But I'll be honest, I would have hated to play against players like this.
43:12They're so sharp, so clever, so composed.
43:15And the organisation and the time and understanding when to go, when not to go.
43:19And an appreciation for the pass here.
43:21Hakimi goes down the right-hand side and he plays it into the box.
43:23First time finish for Clarice Gellier, second goal of the game.
43:26And the quality that they have, as I say, it's breathtaking at times.
43:30But they do put the work in.
43:31This point now is Clarice Gellier.
43:32But he looks forward straight away.
43:34And now here's real danger.
43:36Because it's Desiree Dewey.
43:37Because it's Usman Dembele.
43:38And even though Bayern have players back, he's buying his time.
43:41He's protecting the ball.
43:41Then he gives the ball to the Ballon d'Or winner in Dembele.
43:44And he hits a finish straight through the legs of Rupin Meccano.
43:47And that is a huge goal.
43:49You know, I know Steven's front three was really good.
43:51But to be honest, I think my front three got five goals yesterday.
43:55Hakimi is going to miss the second leg.
43:57We don't know quite how long he's going to be out for.
44:00Undoubtedly, he will be a miss.
44:02They do have other players to come in, of course.
44:03But let's have a word on Luis Enrique and what he has built here.
44:08And he's now the fastest manager to get to 50 Champions League wins.
44:12And that is an illustrious list he sits in there of those behind him.
44:17Can he do this with any other group of players?
44:18Could they play that way?
44:19This is just such a special combination of players.
44:22Not just their talent, their speed, their fitness, everything about them.
44:25The fluidity.
44:26Because his name is going to be banded around, isn't it,
44:28with all the big jobs over the next few years.
44:31I think he needs players of an incredibly high level, obviously.
44:35I don't think he could do it in, like, League Two, necessarily.
44:38The Premier League, obviously.
44:39Yeah, I think he could.
44:40If you think about his Barcelona team, which is always a bit overlooked,
44:42as we think of Barca as Guardiola's construction.
44:46But the team that won the Champions League in 2015 was Luis Enrique's masterpiece,
44:49the Messi-Nemar Suarez $131 season trio, it was the same.
44:55It was that sort of interchanging of positions.
44:56It was the fluidity.
44:57It was the speed.
44:58They did everything out.
44:59And what he won't have if he came to the Premier League is quite that help that he gets sometimes
45:03with the fixtures and how they're able to move games to create a bit more space between
45:08Champions League's fixtures, which they get in Ligue 1.
45:10And also to be able to rest players in the way he does.
45:14And you look at how many minutes his top players have played.
45:18And it's quite significant, isn't it, in terms of their rest time?
45:22Yeah, and this is the 11 who started last night.
45:24Zaire Emery's a slightly strange one, because he's been playing as Fabian Ruiz has been injured.
45:28But everybody else, you know, you're looking at kind of 16, 17 full games they've played
45:32in Ligue 1 this season.
45:33Compared to the Premier League teams, particularly Arsenal, obviously, being left in the Champions
45:38League, that is a relatively easy workload.
45:40Offset a bit by the Club World Cup last summer, because obviously they made the final.
45:43So they didn't have a break.
45:44But then they had a very slow start to the league phase, didn't they?
45:46But they can kind of afford to take it easier a little bit in the league as well, because
45:51they are so much stronger, so much richer than all their rivals.
45:53And, you know, the most lead minutes played outfield this season of the teams left in the
45:57semi-finals, the top four players are all Arsenal players.
46:00However, for as much as that is a good point, I think you look at, say, those
46:03Arsenal players have played all those minutes.
46:04They could have been rotated better throughout the season.
46:07So for as much as, yes, they, you know, have played fewer games.
46:12I think there are some managers that like to maintain a consistent, not necessarily start
46:16in 11, but five or six players.
46:17And that's what we've seen with Arteta.
46:18But then come the end of the season, maybe that's why sometimes they'll fall away.
46:22I don't know if it'll be this season, but maybe that'll be.
46:23OK, I feel like we've gone too far away from what a brilliant game that was.
46:26Sorry, my bad.
46:27No, no, I've led you down that path.
46:29We're going to come right back into the moment because Rory's been going back through the
46:33history of the competition because many people saying this is the greatest game in Champions
46:37League history.
46:38Well, there are some contenders on Rory's list.
46:41And so let the debate begin.
46:43I mean, Stephen came in today into the office and said the greatest game of all time.
46:45We're just putting it in Champions League parameters here.
46:48I just thought it was brilliant.
46:49I mean, the quality on show and the way that they think so quickly on the pitch, they react
46:55to things, whether it's defensively, offensively.
46:58I thought the game was absolutely brilliant.
47:00I mean, the standout game for me on Rory's list is obviously Istanbul, AC Milan versus
47:05Liverpool.
47:05I think it's arguably the greatest final that we've ever seen.
47:08Such a story around it.
47:10But in terms of quality of what we actually saw on the pitch, I think last night's game
47:15was just phenomenal.
47:16Any contenders for you that could nudge it off top spot?
47:20Oh, there's some really good ones there and some real memorable moments.
47:22Like, for example, the Barcelona game against PSG where this, is it Sergio Roberto scores
47:27with like one of the last kicks of the game?
47:28You can feel the raw emotion around that.
47:30But that's also a team losing 6-1.
47:32But I think that game yesterday, when it was 5-2 to PSG, that should have been game
47:37set and match.
47:37But with the quality that Bayern have, instead we've got two more goals from them.
47:41And now the tie's in the balance.
47:43It felt like...
47:44It's your list.
47:44Yeah, I mean, I'm similar to Nadam, to be honest.
47:46I think PSG-Barca was the most kind of breathtaking game that I've ever seen in that 6-1, the
47:50Ramon Sade.
47:51Last night felt like watching Nadal-Federa.
47:53It was two teams just going at each other constantly.
47:56Yeah.
47:56A game for the ages.
47:57A game from the gods.
47:58I think that was my favourite headline.
47:59Well, join us next Wednesday to see if Arsenal can make their second Champions League final
48:03ever, 20 years on from their first.
48:05and to see if Bayern and PSG can score even more goals in the second leg.
48:09Or maybe they'll grind out one old draw from all of us.
48:12Good night.
