00:00In some ways the corner shop is a microcosm of our society and through an
00:05EU exit, pandemic and plenty of World Cup losses, this couple have been at the
00:10forefront of it all. After 25 years the owners of the papermaker's arms just
00:15behind me there will be retiring. Let's see how they got off.
00:19Running a shop there is always highs and lows. Up and down is there but it's all
00:28happy moments. There is sad moment but I will put the happy moments first.
00:35Very very nice people in Scotland, I must say.
00:37We've seen all the kids grow up and they get their kids and it's a lot of things changed.
00:44The shop helped the couple put both their children through medical school with their daughter even born in the shop.
00:51Our hard work paid off. It's paid off. He's a GP now. He's still in the uni.
00:59Trisha is still in the uni. Yeah, we are very proud of it.
01:03Very proud of it. That's what this shop paid us. That's the thing. That's why maybe we didn't feel that
01:08it's a hard work.
01:09But they are doing well. They're very good kids I must say.
01:12And while they say running it hasn't all been easy, they say it's a community here that got them through
01:19those challenging times.
01:20They come have a chat with us like we are like a family. Yeah, like a family.
01:28Sad, happiness, births, deaths. We share everything in here. Everything. People cry, cuddle. Customer come in and cry.
01:38They've seen everything. Yeah.
01:40The other day we had so many people say goodbye to us.
01:43Whenever you walk down the street, there's Francis Teresa. Francis Teresa. Not the shopkeeper or anything. Francis Teresa.
01:51And sometimes you get the people who say, oh, I used to come when I was a kid. The counter
01:56used to be there and used to do 10-piece sweets. Yeah.
02:01I have old memories.
02:02As a couple check out of their shopkeeper lifestyle, they hope the new young owners here will make the same
02:09fond memories they treasure.
02:11And the most memorable time?
02:15Just to watch the fights in the pub outside the pub.
02:18Chloe Brewster for KMTV in Snodland.
02:212 to 1.
02:21Wait for 2 months, I'm gonna have a feelingще.
