Middle East conflict sends fuel prices soaring in Kenya
Transcript
00:06Prices at Kenyan petrol stations recently took a violent leap climbing 16% for petrol and 24%
00:14for diesel in a single government announcement for the average Kenyan this is not just a statistic
00:21it's a breaking point public transport operators have already hiked fares forcing many commuters
00:28to choose between walking miles to work or skipping a meal to afford the ride I used to
00:35break that bone in the morning early in the morning they have an increase for 20 bone so
00:39that's now we are talking 100 shillings every day from morning and evening Nelson Kenyan is
00:47a tomato farmer in the outskirts of Nairobi he says he can no longer absorb the rising cost of
00:53production and to keep his business running Kenyan is transferring the added fuel cost onto the
01:00customer if you come to the prices the dynamics have changed and the role of business dynamics when I
01:11got I get pushed from the petrol I have to to add the cost of the product that I'm supplying
01:19to the
01:19market Kenya is not alone across Africa many countries rely on imports of fuel and crucial
01:27oil-based products like fertilizer economists argue that the continent must begin to look inward and
01:34prioritize self-reliance to insulate itself from future global crisis what is important for the
01:40continent now it is really make sure that the african trade for instance has to be implemented
01:46as swiftly so that countries can really begin to benefit uh within the continent economically and
01:52that will uh somehow cushion them from the real shocks but unfortunately there are some of the
01:57commodities um you know that we can really run away from Kenya joins countries including Egypt
02:03South Africa and Mali that have pushed up prices at the pump more governments are likely to follow suit
02:09forced by global volatility due to the u.s israeli attacks on Iran to raise prices they can no longer
02:17subsidize but as the cost of living climbs so does the temperature of the streets while global leaders
02:25talk strategy and defense many people in Africa are asking a much simpler question how are we supposed to
02:32survive
02:32you
