00:01You'd be a brave punter to bet against a rate hike next week.
00:05The professionals reckon it's odds on.
00:07But today's numbers give the Reserve Bank Board plenty of cause for caution.
00:12Remember last month's rate lift was a split decision, so close to half the board members
00:17are more concerned about a looming recession.
00:20And if you strip out the soaring cost of fuel, inflationary pressures haven't increased
00:25at all.
00:25The other big price hikes were rent, power and building costs, all the things you'd
00:30rather not spend more on, and which drain your wallet.
00:34Plus, the two rate lifts since February are already starting to bite.
00:39Consumer confidence is now at a record low, business confidence isn't far behind.
00:44Add cooling house prices in Sydney and Melbourne into the mix, and that might be just enough
00:49to convince one more board member to hang tight.
00:53For now.
