Entre noviembre y diciembre del 2020 fueron asesinados cuatro periodistas en Afganistán. El último caso en conocerse fue el de la periodista Malalai Maiwand quien fue asesinada a tiros en la ciudad de Jalalabad, por ejercer su profesión. Afganistán está entre los cinco países del mundo más peligrosos para ejercer el periodismo y la libertad de expresión, junto a México, Honduras, Irak y Siria.
