Portugal Housing Crisis: Cascais to provide affordable housing for teachers

Cascais City Council say they will provide affordable housing for teachers who teach in the municipality but have to travel from far.

00:00Qashqai's city council is offering affordable housing for teachers who teach in the municipality

00:07but have to travel from far away.

00:10We have 105 rooms available for this school year, today we are inaugurating these four

00:18rooms that will give an answer to the first 16.

00:22Teachers who live more than 60 kilometers away from where they teach will be eligible

00:26for the housing.

00:29The monthly rent ranges from 150 to 400 euros, depending on the type of accommodation.

00:36Since 2017, rent in Portugal has more than doubled.

00:40Our goal is to attract talent and to attract the best teachers who come to the city council

00:47and that the housing factor is not a hindrance in attracting this talent.

00:52The council says they will also provide temporary housing for those who are filling in for just

00:56a few months.

00:58For example, for teachers replacing individuals who are on sick or maternity leave.
