00:00San Diego, California is a city that's known as a popular tourist destination, as well as a military town, a
00:07science and technology hub, a convention hotspot, a hipster magnet, a major baseball franchise, and a surfer's paradise.
00:16But how is the food here?
00:19Let's explore the highest-rated, most-talked-about, and all-around best eateries that San Diego has to offer, here
00:26on Food Diego.
01:00In the coastal neighborhood of La Jolla is a sub-community called Bird Rock, which is obviously named after this
01:06bird-perched rock.
01:09On the main drag in Bird Rock is an old bakery called Wayfarer Bread and Pastry.
01:15While Wayfarer is known more for their pastries, they also do some of San Diego's best pizzas, but only for
01:21pre-order pickup from Thursday to Saturday nights.
01:24The pizza menu changes every month.
01:28When we were there, their meat pizza consisted of prosciutto as the meat.
01:32Plus it had picorino cheese and Calabrian chili, on top of the tomato sauce.
01:37They also had a vegetarian pizza that had asparagus, shallots, chili threads, arugula, gruyere cheese and bechamel sauce.
01:45Both pizzas also seem to have lemon flavoring in the crust.
02:00Just south of Bird Rock is the northern bit of Pacific Beach, and on Turquoise Street there is a pizza
02:06restaurant called Ambrogio 15.
02:08They specialize in Milan-style pizza as that's the Italian city that the owners are from.
02:14Similar to a pepperoni pizza, but better, is their salami pizza, called the salamino picante.
02:20Made with spicy spianata Calabra salami.
02:23They can also give you some spicy oil, to dip your pizza in and spice it further.
02:33Also in Pacific Beach, is a grandma-style, or squared-shaped, pizza shop called Square Pizza Company.
02:39Their Detroit-style pizzas are deep dish and have two racing stripes of sauce going across the top.
02:45This is the Corvette, it's got pepperoni, sausage, and is topped with sauce.
02:51Although the crust looks like thick bread, it's actually very soft and airy.
02:55And not to worry, they have thin crust pizzas too.
03:10Going east of PB, to the eastern side of Mission Bay, is the neighborhood of Bay Park.
03:15On Claremont Drive, there's a drive-thru pizza shop called Pit Stop Pizza, where they also have some outdoor seating.
03:21The highlight here is the meat lover's pizza.
03:25All the types of meat are tender and flavorful.
03:28These are pepperoni, sausage, and a soft sandwich type of ham.
03:37You also can't go wrong with their plain cheese pizza.
03:49Shooting up to the northeastern reaches of the city, is the community of Rancho Bernardo.
03:55In Rancho Bernardo's main shopping center, there's a pizza restaurant called The Shop.
04:00The shop's specialty is deep dish pizza.
04:03This one is called Where's the Meat?
04:05It's got pepperoni, sausage, meatballs, and bacon.
04:10They also do great traditional crust pizzas, like this margarita.
04:21Scooting down the 15 freeway to Tirasanta, is another shopping center called Tira Center.
04:26In this center is a small pizza shop called The Pizza Standard, which is the number one pizza place on
04:32Yelp, during the time of filming.
04:34While they do some creative pizzas like their chicken parmesan, you can tell that their good old pepperoni, with cupping
04:40pepperoni, is their specialty.

05:41In the historic neighborhood of Mission Hills, is a deep dish pizza place called Lefty's Chicago Pizzeria.
05:48With Chicago-themed decoration inside, they of course specialize in Chicago deep dish, but it's not all they have.
05:55This is a slice of their sausage deep dish.
05:58And it's actually not super deep.
06:01The slice is just thin enough, so you don't need silverware.
06:07It's also worth noting that this is the same space where San Diego's famous, Phil's BBQ, started at.
06:13Moving a bit east on Washington Street, where Mission Hills becomes Hillcrest, is Bronx Pizza, an obvious New York-style
06:20pizza shop.
06:21You can get whole pies here, but they also have a two-slice and soda deal.
06:26We went with a slice of pepperoni, and a tomato basil too.
06:30They don't short you on the cheese here, in fact, this is probably the best place for gooey, warm, mozzarella.
06:43Further into Hillcrest, on University, is Hillcrest Pizza.
06:47And Hillcrest is a good place for out-of-the-ordinary pizza like this one that's topped with fries.
06:53It's called, the Paradise Hills, and it's got San Marzano tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, ribeye steak, bell peppers, sautéed onions,
07:01mushrooms, seasoned French fries, and a homemade white drizzle.
07:14Moving a little east of there, to North Park, is Café Calabria, a coffee spot in the morning, a cocktail
07:20bar in the afternoon, and also serves Neapolitan pizza.
07:24They're prepared near the entrance of the restaurant, and fired in a wood-burning pizza oven.
07:33This is the Salsicchia.
07:35The pizza sauce is made with San Marzano tomatoes, the mozzarella is Fior di Latte, plus it has ricotta and
07:41grana cheeses.
07:43And the meat is house-made fennel sausage.
07:46And it's the most flavorful sausage pizza so far.
07:53Incidentally, the dark roast coffee here is our producer's favorite cup in all of San Diego.
08:00Also in North Park, is Tribute Pizza, a higher-end pizza restaurant inside a space that's been converted from an
08:05old post office.
08:09The Tribute Pizza name is because the pizzas are tributes to famous pizza chefs and shops around the country.
08:17This one's called, You Knew This Was Coming, and it's a tribute to Lee Hunzinger, a New York pizza chef
08:22who's known for his work at Zoli's Pizza, in Fort Worth, Texas.
08:25It has organic, tomato sauce, and the cheese is mozzarella plus an oak-smoked cheddar blend.
08:31It also has pickled jalapeno, shaved red onion, and an old-school pizzeria herb and spice blend.
08:37And the kicker is, the crust is an everything bagel crust.
08:42You can also add mushrooms and fancy pepperoni.
08:45We chose to add pepperoni.
08:47And finally for the uptown area, we end up in Normal Heights, at Blind Lady Ale House, an award-winning
08:53microbrewery located in a historic brick building.
08:57Blind Lady's pizzas are on the smaller side.
08:59This is their simple but popular, margarita, complete with its full leaves of basil, which pack a lot of basil
09:06punch when you get to them.
09:08The crust of these pizzas are a little deceiving.
09:11When you take a slice, you see that they're actually extremely thin pizzas.
09:15This allows you to taste more of the tomato sauce and mozzarella combination.
09:37And now for the section you've probably been waiting for, the Little Italy segment.
09:42Little Italy is here because of the tuna fishing industry, which peaked from the 1940s to 1960s and was largely
09:48operated by San Diego's Italian community.
09:52Felipe's Pizza Grotto is a generations-old restaurant that now has locations all over Southern California.
09:58It started right here as a neighborhood market.
10:02However, in the years since, more, even higher-rated, pizza places have opened in Little Italy.
10:07Like Landini's Pizzeria, a New York-style pizza shop that's located right next to Felipe's.
10:15This is a slice of the pepperoni and sausage.
10:18The meats are all very soft and juicy.
10:32Another high-rated pizza place in Little Italy is Isola Pizza Bar, a restaurant owned by an Italian immigrant who
10:39does traditional, Naples pizza.
10:41This is their salamino picante.
10:44It has some very flavorful spicy salami and fresh basil in addition to the tomato sauce and mozzarella.
10:50Parmesan is also pre-added.
10:53The crust of these pizzas are actually soft and spongy.
10:57A nice change from crispy pizzas.
11:00Moving out of Little Italy, but staying downtown, on Market Street, is Prince Street Pizza.
11:06Prince Street is actually a chain restaurant, straight out of New York City, with multiple locations here in San Diego.
11:13This one, in the Gaslamp District, makes a great stop before Padre Games.
11:19While they do both traditional and grandma-style pizzas, their specialty seems to be the grandma, or square-shaped, pizzas.
11:26Which are about medium in depth and very tasty.
11:30More east on Market Street, into the East Village, is TNT Pizza.
11:35They also do both styles of pizza.
11:39This is the Large Marge.
11:42It has sliced tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, roasted garlic, olive oil, and basil, but no tomato sauce.
11:51TNT started as a pop-up, during the pandemic, but has become a permanent fixture.
11:55TNT started as a pop-up, during the pandemic, but has become a permanent fixture.
