00:00.
00:30He's a world-class con man.
00:32My brother has ruined a lot of people's lives.
00:34Allegedly, Anthony is leaving a string of victims in his wake,
00:38and he's doing it in the sickest way possible,
00:40by leveraging people's love and trust in him,
00:42family and friends and otherwise,
00:44and he needs to be exposed.
00:46That could be him.
00:47Dog in the car.
00:47That definitely could be him.
00:49Hi!
00:55When it comes to love,
00:56betrayal is the death of a thousand dreams.
01:00Army Elizabeth, over here!
01:03In the unraveling of countless lives,
01:06you can spend years picking up the pieces,
01:08examining them, rearranging them,
01:13digging through the past to make sense of it all.
01:17Navigating through my personal heartbreak
01:18took me back to my roots as an investigative journalist.
01:21Hi, I'm Elizabeth Chambers.
01:23Elizabeth Chambers.
01:24Elizabeth Chambers outside the Los Angeles Police Department.
01:27It ignited a curiosity inside of me about love that fractures.
01:31Oh my God.
01:32Inflicts lasting trauma.
01:34Hi, I wanted to see if they could ask you some questions.
01:36Absolutely not.
01:37And can lead to tragedy.
01:39And that's when my world ended.
01:40I feel that it's part of my calling to meet with the victims,
01:44the survivors,
01:45to listen to their stories,
01:47show how it can happen to anyone,
01:50and expose the truth.
01:54I'm Elizabeth Chambers,
01:56and this is Toxic.
02:05I've spent months following the path of alleged victims
02:08Anthony Stringas has left in his wake.
02:10He's stolen more than a million dollars
02:12and has ruined so many lives without any indication of slowing down.
02:16What if I told you that he served his time in prison,
02:20he was completely reformed,
02:21and he's not conning anyone anymore?
02:23What would you say?
02:24I would find that very, very hard to believe.
02:27This is his wiring, and it's destructive,
02:30and he's not, you know, there's no reforming him.
02:33Mm-hmm.
02:34It's just not possible.
02:35Mm-hmm.
02:35And I'm almost positive that, like,
02:37without knowing anything more,
02:39I could probably list out a bunch of things,
02:41and the odds are I'd be right.
02:42Things that make us a good target,
02:44because I've just seen this pattern.
02:47Being smart is important.
02:49Mm-hmm.
02:49Being compassionate,
02:50being idealistic,
02:51being very trusting,
02:53you know, assuming that people are good,
02:55being a bit of an introvert.
02:57It's easier to manipulate somebody
02:59who tends to spend a lot of time alone,
03:01a tendency towards having a lot of compassion for animals,
03:04and so it's very common to have a rescue dog.
03:07And it's like, of course,
03:09of course she has a rescue dog.
03:14I am on a mission to find alleged conman Anthony Strangus
03:17in an effort to prevent him
03:18from destroying even one more life.
03:22My hunt for Anthony Strangus
03:24led us to Austin, Texas,
03:25where an address popped up for Anthony and a woman,
03:28potentially his new girlfriend,
03:29and where my team is about to knock
03:31on what we believe is his door.
03:39Hey!
03:53She's coming back. She's coming back.
03:58Bad news, boys.
03:59What's that?
04:00A kid and a mother answered the door.
04:06Um, she was like,
04:08no, there's no one here by that name.
04:11I thought they lived here.
04:12How long have you been here?
04:13About a year.
04:15So.
04:22Anthony, not being at this address,
04:24kind of felt like an intentional red herring.
04:27Catherine, is it possible that he would have entered this address
04:30into the database just to throw people off?
04:33The fact that it hasn't been that easy and it normally is,
04:37he has obviously eluded us.
04:39I want to know how he did it.
04:42Obviously disappointing news, but we'll keep pushing on.
04:46At this point, we knew it was going to be a lot harder than we originally thought.
04:51But we did have one new clue.
04:54Anthony's potential girlfriend, who we'll refer to as Jane Doe,
04:59attached to the same address in Austin and the car registered to Anthony.
05:03I just kind of want to go back to the drawing board and see what else I can dig up.
05:14Catherine continued digging and calling for help from her network.
05:19And she found another address shared by Anthony and Jane Doe.
05:23A P.O. box in Waco, Texas.
05:27She also found a new vehicle for Jane Doe, which was also linked to Anthony.
05:32She's driving a BMW.
05:35Okay.
05:36Showing a lot of activity going back and forth from Florida,
05:39which is Anthony's home state.
05:41What's the city?
05:42Palm Coast.
05:43Palm Coast.
05:44And Texas.
05:45Including.
05:46Her car was also in Texas.
05:49It's Waco, Texas.
05:50One hit in Waco.
05:53Okay, thank you.
05:54Bye.
05:56So the link between this woman and Anthony was becoming stronger.
06:00But then, the trail went cold.
06:03For months, there were no new license plate pings.
06:06No new addresses for Anthony or Jane Doe.
06:10I continued on, diving into other stories to share.
06:16And my hunt for Anthony and my pursuit of accountability for Sarma, Michaela, Eddie, became more and more distant.
06:25How are you? Nice to meet you.
06:27Nice to meet you.
06:28Thank you so much for being here.
06:29Sure.
06:29Until I sat down with Harry Litsky for an entirely different story I was covering.
06:34On a whim, I told Harry, a former investigator for the DEA, CIA, and Department of Justice, about my search
06:41for Anthony.
06:43And he agreed to try to help.
06:50Hello, Harry.
06:51Hey. How are you?
06:52I am doing well.
06:54I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you helping us with this.
06:57Happy to help.
06:59All right. So what do you need for us to find him?
07:03In terms of what you can provide, I can use everything.
07:06Names he's used, aliases, date of birth, girlfriends, relatives, last known address, current address if you have it.
07:14He's 6'3", big dude.
07:16He's a big boy.
07:17He claims to have a military background.
07:19He tells people he has special forces.
07:21We think he's probably in Texas or Florida.
07:25He's still active on social media?
07:27Um, if he is, it's under...
07:30Or do you think he's still active in scamming people?
07:32Is he still looking for a new victim?
07:34Um, in the words of one of his victims, I said,
07:36If I told you that he is reformed after prison and he's a completely different person who's living a life
07:44above board, what would you say?
07:45And she said, I would tell you that you're absolutely crazy and there's not a chance in hell.
07:50So based on his track record, it's a good possibility.
07:53I think he's just getting better.
07:55I think he's getting better with each victim and I think he's getting smarter.
07:58Uh, he is a very, very intelligent person.
08:01I mean, the thing is, he got married, took a woman's last name.
08:05He has so many aliases.
08:06And if people haven't seen this documentary about him, nobody has any reason to believe that he could be a
08:13gambling addict that keeps stealing money from people.
08:17Right.
08:18That's why I want to find him, to prevent anyone else from being victimized.
08:22This is helpful.
08:23I mean, it's a, it's a good start.
08:25It's more than a lot of cases I've worked.
08:27The fact that this guy has been so elusive, has managed to avoid capture by other PIs, by you and
08:34your staff, means that we might be looking in what we think is the right place and it's not the
08:40right place.
08:41Between my street law enforcement, my intelligence community service, and my white collar and fraud background, I like to think
08:48I'm better situated than most.
08:49I have had a decent history of finding people who prefer not to be found.
08:53So we just got to get in front of them.
08:57So this is the guy?
08:58This is the guy.
08:58There he is.
08:59December 1988.
09:00There he is.
09:01So, the three names.
09:03Anthony P. Strangis, Anthony P. Knight, Anthony Knight.
09:06This Austin address is the last one that we have.
09:08This is where we did our stakeout.
09:10He 100% does not live there.
09:11It was a mom and her son.
09:13They're not hiding anything.
09:14See, the Ormond Beach, Florida.
09:16Well, that was only last year.
09:17Mm-hmm.
09:18Can you search that address and see who the homeowner is?
09:21Yep.
09:23Any of those names?
09:26Yes.
09:27Yeah.
09:27She's also got the P.O. box.
09:30Okay.
09:31It's her vehicle that we're tracking.
09:33That's her license plate number.
09:34This is Major.
09:35This is Major.
09:36This is who we think he's with.
09:38So that's the best lead?
09:39The database that Harry pulled up showed several addresses between Anthony and this Jane Doe.
09:45This is interesting.
09:47Yes.
09:49What's interesting?
09:50But even more shocking were the numbers that were listed for her former employers.
09:54She has phone numbers that come back to defense contractors.
10:02Lockheed Martin, Raytheon Company.
10:06If somebody provides their employment phone number to, you know, whoever, um, when they're
10:13signing up for an account, opening a credit card, whatever it is, that's how it ends up
10:16getting here.
10:17The fact that she's got two different defense contractors sort of screamed she was in that
10:22kind of line of work, so she could have a clearance.
10:26Anthony's always identified as military, always attracted to people in the military and
10:30always really gravitates towards that profile.
10:35This is huge.
10:37That's scary.
10:38Is she the potential victim or do we think she's helping him?
10:41Nobody helps Anthony.
10:43So he could be taking advantage of her right now.
10:45Anthony's incapable.
10:47Correct.
10:47And she might be working in defense contracting.
10:51Correct.
10:53I wouldn't be surprised if she has no idea, and he will have moved in with her.
10:58They'll be living together.
11:00The employer that Harry found for Jane Doe was listed in Arizona.
11:04I mean, he could be in Arizona.
11:06Yeah.
11:07There's definitely a connection there.
11:09So I will go on socials.
11:11I'm going to start doing this research.
11:13I have her email address.
11:14I have her phone numbers.
11:14I'm going to get the license plate to you, and then let's reconvene.
11:19This is very exciting.
11:20It feels like there's hope.
11:22All right.
11:23I like it.
11:24Game on.
11:28Everyone in Anthony's life is a potential victim.
11:33Jane Doe, who we just found out works for U.S. defense contractors, may have no idea who she's dealing
11:39with.
11:40We have a huge new lead, but with that, so many more questions.
11:45How much does she know?
11:47Has Anthony spun another web of lies?
11:50If she is his newest victim, what does he want with her?
11:55And what would he do to get it?
12:04As my team looked deeper into Jane Doe and Anthony, I received a court document that shed new light on
12:10the psychological and sexual abuse allegations raised by Sarma.
12:14Overall, it was, you know, psychological and financial.
12:19Later on, grotesquely, it was sexual.
12:22So I got my hands on this memo, which was sent from Sarma's original lawyer to the judge in 2016.
12:31There are allegations in this document that paint a picture that is far more troubling than anyone knows.
12:38Mr. Strangas began controlling all aspects of Sarma's personal and professional life, utilizing the time-tested control tools available to
12:46him as an experienced domestic abuser and conman.
12:49Mr. Strangas controlled all of her everyday activities, including access to her cellular phone, access to her social media, access
12:57to her family and friends, when and where she was to travel,
13:00and demanding that he be given access to all of her passwords, including those for the business banking relationships.
13:06Sarma was often without any means of communication.
13:09If this is true, she was essentially a prisoner.
13:13Not only does this memo go into detail about the ways that he controlled her,
13:16it also goes into some pretty dark stuff and includes some text messages between the two.
13:22Most importantly and tragically, he also used violence.
13:24Mr. Strangas repeatedly raped Sarma, forcing her to commit sexual acts against her will.
13:31In G-chat messages, the following exchange occurred between Sarma and Mr. Strangas.
13:35Sarma, you have no idea the loathing I feel for you.
13:39Stringas, yes I do, but I also know the love. I know what could be.
13:44Sarma, you don't f***ing humiliate and rape someone you love.
13:51Stringas, you're the best wife ever.
13:53Sarma, you're the greatest raping, torturing, f***ed up, manipulative, lying, quote unquote, husband ever.
14:01I heart you.
14:04So we didn't see any of this in Bad Vegan.
14:06They didn't touch on this.
14:08And this is not direct proof, but she's calling him a rapist and he's not refuting it.
14:13He's not responding.
14:14He's not saying, I didn't rape you.
14:17What are you talking about?
14:20It's heartbreaking. This is heartbreaking.
14:23I don't know why these sexual abuse charges were not brought against Anthony.
14:27This has moved beyond the finances.
14:29Sarma is repeatedly calling him a rapist in writing.
14:33Knowing what I went through and the dark, dark, destructive nightmare of it is painful.
14:41But I know he's not going to feel remorse.
14:44I know he's not going to suffer in any way that we might suffer because we all, you know, most
14:48of us have a conscience.
14:49So it's like there's no point in, like, harboring resentment against him.
14:53It's almost like being angry at, like, a spider that bit you, you know?
14:58It's like he's the spider.
15:00Mm-hmm.
15:01You just want him, you know, neutralized so he's not going to bite somebody else.
15:07Strangus, through his court-appointed attorney, denied all allegations but did not elaborate on his denials in responding to 80
15:12questions from Vanity Fair.
15:19So this is where the stakes that were high before become urgent.
15:24The fact that, yes, he's a con man.
15:27Yes, he did his time for conning people out of money.
15:31Fine, but now we're talking about a man who is presumably walking the streets of free man, who allegedly has
15:39the capability, the history, of raping his victim.
15:46I knew at this point I wasn't just searching for Anthony Strangus.
15:50It's very possible that Anthony has his new girlfriend caught in a con like he did with Sarma just a
15:57decade ago.
15:58Only now it seemed possible that she could be at more risk than we ever knew.
16:04And if she was, I had to let her know.
16:07So my team and I start searching for this Jane Doe.
16:10And the very next day, we find a profile that looks like a perfect match.
16:16Holy .
16:17This is .
16:18This is .
16:19That's the dog.
16:20Yes, yes, yes, yes.
16:21That's the same dog from the pictures.
16:23Right, right, right, right.
16:23She asked for a Republican, so Harry put us on the path.
16:26Now we're taking all the information Harry just gave us and running with it.
16:31Where did that picture come from?
16:32Her Facebook.
16:34This is .
16:35This is like the girl that we believe Anthony's with.
16:38In the picture, she's holding a dog.
16:41That's important because the last time Anthony spoke to Michaela, he sent a picture of that dog.
16:47This dog.
16:53So we know that this dog belongs to .
16:57Who basically looks like a brunette Sarma.
17:00We know that Anthony can't be alone.
17:02We know he's not living alone.
17:03We know he's not in jail and we don't think he's dead.
17:06But we also know his pattern.
17:08He goes from woman to woman to woman.
17:09So our goal has been to find the woman he's currently with.
17:14Because he's been very quiet.
17:15No one's spoken to him.
17:16Michaela hasn't spoken to him.
17:17His mom hasn't heard from him.
17:19We have found .
17:21And where there's a .
17:23We believe there's an Anthony.
17:27My pursuit of con man Anthony Strangas had new life.
17:30And while Anthony is notoriously impossible to track down,
17:35the woman we believed is his new girlfriend and potential new victim was not.
17:41This woman ticked all the boxes.
17:43Outspoken Republican.
17:45Dogs that matched the photos that Anthony sent Michaela.
17:49And we confirmed that she worked for a U.S. defense contractor in Arizona.
17:54I asked both Katherine and Harry to pursue this new lead.
17:57And we hit the mother load.
18:02Not only were they able to locate an address in Arizona for both Anthony and Jane Doe.
18:08They were also able to place the BMW at that same location just a few weeks prior.
18:15With this new lead, it felt like there was a really good chance that I was actually going to be
18:20able to find Anthony and Jane Doe.
18:23But I knew I had to act fast.
18:26Harry agreed to join me and met me in Arizona, where he'd already spent a few days investigating and had
18:32some new intel.
18:34You've had a bit of a head start.
18:36I have. It's been a productive couple of days.
18:39Okay, good. Good.
18:40I want to hear everything.
18:41Okay. So the vehicle, which was sort of our best lead, I don't think is in play any longer.
18:47Okay.
18:48The reason I say that is because the last time it was seen was late March into early April.
18:55And the very last place it was seen for a week, it was in an industrial area down by the
19:01airport.
19:04I went down there and put eyes on, and it's like an impound lot.
19:08Hmm. Like a normal towing lot?
19:11Yeah, it looks like a towing company.
19:13Did you see the vehicle there?
19:14I didn't. Now, I've been by the apartment. I sat there for three and a half hours around, you know,
19:20come home time.
19:20Mm-hmm.
19:21Between 4 and 7.30, and it never showed up.
19:24Could be that they were out late that night, so I went by the next morning at 5.30 a
19:28.m.
19:29It wasn't there.
19:29Every time I've been back since at varying times during the day, nothing.
19:33Are we sure this is the address?
19:34I have, like, PTSD from our last situation where we're at this apartment complex for two days and no sign
19:42of that, no trace.
19:42Um, so yesterday I went by and they have an intercom system out because it's a gated community.
19:49Yeah.
19:49And it has the ability to scroll through a directory listing.
19:52Yeah.
19:52And his current alias, Anthony Knight, was listed in a directory.
20:00That's huge. That's huge. That's huge. That's huge.
20:09So, his current alias, Anthony Knight, was listed in a directory.
20:16That's huge.
20:17Yeah, so the apartment complex might be our best play at this point, but her name, interestingly, was not on
20:24the directory.
20:25Is that listed at all?
20:26She's not listed at all.
20:27Weird.
20:28That's weird.
20:29That is really weird.
20:29They, the primary address for her, um, is a UPS store P.O. box about a mile from the apartment.
20:36Weird that she'd have a P.O. box when she has an apartment here.
20:40In Waco, she had a UPS store associated with her, too.
20:42So, and then looking back at her history, you know, before that in Florida, she, she never did.
20:50Yeah.
20:51None that I could see.
20:51So, right. Post-Anthony, it seems that she transitioned to, you know, the style of, of P.O. box.
21:00Well, this is very good. That's very promising.
21:02I think that we are already, you know, several steps closer just by saying his name on the call box.
21:09So, I think we need a game plan.
21:10I mean, there's a number of, of, you know, ruse approaches we can do.
21:14We could use the, the UPS store, the P.O. box.
21:17We could drop the package off.
21:18And that's also a way to get some intel, potentially, right?
21:21So, if we walk in and say, hey, listen, I don't know the exact box.
21:24You know, they might say, like, oh, they packed up and left.
21:27Right?
21:28So, it might be a quick way to figure out what we're dealing with.
21:31Here's what I think we do.
21:31I think we do the P.O. box delivery and try to get in touch with June Doe and warn
21:36her about Anthony.
21:38I think we need to go to the impound lot.
21:41Right.
21:41He doesn't want anyone finding him.
21:43He doesn't want anyone calling him out.
21:44Yeah.
21:45And yet here we are doing just that.
21:47And you never know what's going to happen.
21:48So, I'm just like, what, what advice do you have for me in terms of doing this?
21:54You know, if I see anything that's concerning, you know, that I think it's, it's starting to go south.
22:00I will, I will make it clear.
22:02Thank you for your time.
22:03Let's, you know, let's get out of here.
22:05You never know what a caged animal is going to do.
22:09We have one chance to get this right.
22:15I think we should just pop by the impound lot and see if we can get inside and then speak
22:21to someone and show them a photo of the car.
22:24Well, it's certainly worth a second look.
22:26I absolutely agree.
22:27And maybe, who knows, we get some kind of intel that's helpful.
22:29The car was there for two weeks.
22:31The car was there for a long time.
22:33They have to know the story and they have to know from where it was towed.
22:36They certainly do.
22:37We don't have to share that with us, right.
22:39Right.
22:39So, this is going to be it, right, right here.
22:43Yeah, this is the lot.
22:46Okay, so this is the lot where the car was last seen.
22:51It was here for how long?
22:52It was here for about a week.
22:54And based on the pictures, I think it was parked over there.
22:58Yeah, I don't see it. There's a Cadillac.
23:00I don't see it.
23:00I mean, the color's kind of the easiest spot.
23:03Let's see if we can find a person who can answer some questions.
23:06Yeah, let's do it.
23:07I'm Elizabeth.
23:08Nice to meet you.
23:09How are you?
23:09Nice to meet you.
23:10I need to know the history of one vehicle that was here.
23:12Could you ask your boss and we can give you any information you need?
23:15The impound lot wouldn't let us bring the cameras in, but they allowed us to keep recording audio while we
23:20asked them a few questions.
23:21Well, I have not received anything from the lender to allow you guys to have that information.
23:27Was it a repo?
23:30I cannot release any information.
23:32Okay.
23:33It was a repo.
23:34It was a repo.
23:36They obviously can't share a lot of information, but essentially when we asked about the specific car, she promptly said,
23:43we are not able to disclose information from the lender.
23:48And being the professional that he is, Harry said, oh, so it was a repo.
23:52And we got a little slight nod, so.
23:54And that makes sense.
23:55And that explains the two weeks, why nobody would come.
23:58You know, if you parked badly, your car's gone, you need to get to work, you come down the next
24:02day.
24:03Two weeks, it'll take that long for the bank to make arrangements to dispose of it, sell it, you know,
24:08report the title.
24:10Right.
24:10You know, back into their name, things like that.
24:12So that tracks perfectly with the time it was here.
24:16And now the story becomes okay.
24:19You know, it gets repoed for a reason.
24:23The car being repossessed weeks ago and never being reclaimed signaled some serious trouble.
24:29And knowing Anthony, he doesn't want to be anywhere near trouble.
24:32I started to wonder if he and Jane Doe were still even in Arizona.
24:37But Harry and I decided to go forward with our next strategy.
24:41If they were still here, they'd have to pick up their mail.
24:43So we decided to go to the UPS store where their P.O. box was located and drop a package
24:48off that they'd have to pick up.
24:51There it is.
24:52There it is.
24:53I think the most important thing is reaching out to her, you know?
24:56I think we have to address it to .
24:58I don't think she knows who she's living with.
25:00She needs to know what she's dealing with here.
25:02And I don't think it needs to be involved.
25:04It's just, what do you think?
25:05Call me?
25:06Yeah, simple.
25:07Dear .
25:12Please call me.
25:13Okay, so we have our box.
25:16We're going to leave this for them.
25:17They will hopefully send her an email or a text saying you have a package that has been delivered and
25:22it's ready for pick up.
25:24And we are going to wait outside.
25:27Going in.
25:35Hello, how are you?
25:37Hello, how are you?
25:42Hello, how are you?
25:43They called him the .
25:45She said it's for the .
25:47They come in often.
25:49They left a message for her asking if it was okay if I leave it, and he's going to call
25:54me if for some reason she says, no.
26:07I got a call.
26:09Hello?
26:22I got a call.
26:24I got a call.
26:26It was Jane Doe.
26:32Yes, my name's Elizabeth.
26:36I actually wanted to connect with you.
26:39So we're actually doing a documentary.
26:42Have you ever heard that name, Anthony Knight
26:43or Anthony Strangis?
26:46No, I have not.
26:47It's your boyfriend.
26:48OK.
26:49We were under the impression that he might be your boyfriend
26:52or that you had lived together at one point.
26:55No, that's not true.
26:56I would just recommend strongly that you look into his past.
27:02OK, thank you.
27:03Bye.
27:04Bye.
27:05We got to go to the apartment.
27:07Yeah.
27:07She's going to call him right now.
27:08Right now, she's going to call him.
27:09Yeah, we got to go.
27:10It's the same reaction we had from Mrs. Johnson when we went to the front door.
27:14It's like, nope, I don't know what you're talking about.
27:16I do believe she knows him.
27:18She may not know the whole truth.
27:19She may just be protective.
27:21Yeah.
27:22We're not done yet.
27:23If she is a victim, that can be really hard to admit.
27:27But whether she's under his control or not, I assumed her first move would be to call him.
27:32This is where the license plate hits came from, the apartment's sort of on the backside.
27:38So we rushed over to the apartment complex.
27:41So you might want to just pull straight in here.
27:43Right here?
27:44Yeah.
27:45And parked where we couldn't be seen.
27:47In theory, this is where he's going to come out.
27:49But where Anthony would have to walk by if he wanted to leave his apartment.
27:54Now we just got to wait and see if he pops out.
27:59I fully expected Anthony to flee.
28:02My heart was pounding.
28:04My hands were shaking.
28:08But nothing happened.
28:12We don't even know if they still live here.
28:15Do you have a feeling that he's not here?
28:17I didn't know if we had missed him or if he was even there at all.
28:22I couldn't wait anymore to get answers.
28:25So I decided to get them myself.
28:27So I'm going to write this note similar to the one that we put in the box.
28:31It just says,
28:32Please call me.
28:33It's very important.
28:34Sign my name and phone number.
28:35Point is just to ascertain whether or not they in fact do live here together.
28:53How'd it go?
28:54100% confirmed.
28:55She didn't confirm the photo, but she knew .
28:58And I said, when did she just confirm that her partner boyfriend is Anthony and I, she's like, I cannot
29:03confirm that, but I can tell them to come get it.
29:05Oh.
29:06So she confirmed it.
29:08So she confirmed it.
29:08Which confirms the lie.
29:10I now know for some reason that Jane Doe was withholding the truth about knowing Anthony.
29:16But I also knew that nobody was coming or going from the apartment.
29:19So I decided to take a bit of a more aggressive approach.
29:23Okay.
29:23We're getting ready to exit the vehicle and head in.
29:25Elizabeth's going to go and do the door knock.
29:27So just everyone heads up and be ready.
29:29Copy.
29:29Yeah.
29:30What could go wrong?
29:40Out of the vehicle and making our way to the target department.
29:58The adrenaline is crazy.
30:02So they are definitely in the house.
30:05They're inside.
30:06They're inside.
30:06We can hear them inside.
30:08We knocked once.
30:09The dog started barking.
30:11And then we knocked again.
30:13The dogs did not bark at all.
30:15The dogs were very clearly hushed inside of the apartment, which gave it away.
30:19When I knocked the second time, I knew somebody was in there and that eventually they would have to come
30:25out.
30:27Hey guys, we've just repositioned to get an eyeball on the door.
30:31We think somebody's inside.
30:32So we're just going to sit here for a bit and see if they come out.
30:36Copy that.
30:38We repositioned right outside the apartment door and kept our eyes glued on the door for hours.
30:44When the sun went down, not a single light came on inside the house.
30:49As if the person inside, if there was somebody inside, was clearly hiding from us.
30:54Stay until 9, do one more door knock, see if the dogs are there.
30:58You know, the fact that the dogs stopped barking makes me think somebody's in there.
31:01I think he's in there.
31:04I mean, at some point, the dogs need to go out.
31:08Yeah, it's just weird something's going on.
31:10Like, we haven't seen her come home.
31:12Mm-mm.
31:13It's really interesting the neighbor crossed the way, knows him, ID'd him, but said she hasn't seen him for a
31:19month.
31:20That's great.
31:21Which is exactly the same time that the BMW disappeared.
31:24Right.
31:24Yeah, that timing is interesting.
31:28It disappeared, got impounded, disappeared, and so did he.
31:43It was now pushing midnight.
31:45We had been surveilling the apartment for over six hours, and there was still not a sign of life.
31:54I mean, who knows what they do.
31:56I mean, maybe they're at the casino, maybe they, there's dogs, there's no dog walker.
32:12After an 18-hour day, we decided to call it.
32:15We cut the audio, we put down the cameras.
32:24And then...
32:28He was over there, he was over there.
32:30He was over there.
32:33He was over there.
32:58He was over there.
32:59He was over there.
33:00He was over there.
33:00He was over there.
33:00He was over there.
33:01He was over there.
33:03He was over there.
33:05He was over there.
33:09He was over there.
33:10He was over there.
33:11He was over there.
33:12He was over there.
33:12He was over there.
33:13He was over there.
33:14He was over there.
34:39Ok?
34:44Vamos lá, vamos lá.
34:46Vamos lá.
34:51Vamos lá.
34:52For 6 meses, I tracked Anthony.
34:55And for a long time, I thought I would never have the opportunity
34:58to meet him face to face.
35:00And then I blinked,
35:01and I had confronted one of the most infamous conmen in America.
35:06It was such a surreal feeling.
35:08I don't care who you're talking to. I have no conmen.
35:11Did I say too much?
35:13Did I not say enough?
35:15I got to feel Anthony's manipulation firsthand,
35:18where he tried to turn it back on us
35:20as if we had done something wrong.
35:22As we left the apartment, I was exhausted.
35:26Our camera batteries were completely dead.
35:28Pure pitch black.
35:30Yeah.
35:31But I couldn't sleep that night.
35:33I had a lot of catching up to do in the morning.
35:43Hello?
35:44Sarma!
35:46I wanted to let you know that we found him.
35:49We found him through the woman he's been with for the past year,
35:53and went to his home.
35:55My first thought is concern for whoever he's with.
35:58Yeah.
35:59What's her deal?
36:00He's just living with her, and that's all we know?
36:03Or...
36:03She flat out denied to me knowing him,
36:06knowing anything about him.
36:07I had a conversation with her over the phone.
36:09And she says, I have nothing to do with him.
36:11I don't know this person.
36:12That's weird.
36:13I mean, on paper, she seems like a very normal, put-together person.
36:18Nothing nefarious in her past.
36:20No criminal history.
36:21But we also know that that's kind of his type.
36:24Yeah, exactly.
36:25I mean, you know, same with me.
36:27I think odds are obviously extraordinarily high that she's in a bad situation,
36:32but either doesn't realize it or is afraid of him.
36:35It was interesting, too, Sarmite.
36:37He was visibly agitated, and I could tell he was breathing deeply and about to lose it.
36:42Yeah, that brings back all these memories.
36:45Like, when he breathed heavy out of his nose, it reminded me of, like, a bull, you know?
36:51Mm-hmm.
36:51Mm-hmm.
36:52And then did he just end up going back in his house and slamming the door?
36:55He did.
36:56He threatened to call the police.
36:57Which I'm like, please, call the police on yourself.
37:01Yeah, that's amazing.
37:02He responded exactly in the way we anticipated him responding,
37:07both verbally and physically.
37:08He was extremely visibly agitated, angry.
37:12I mean, he was emotional.
37:13He got, like, he was breathing really heavily.
37:15His posture changed.
37:16I think that's even part of the con.
37:18You think?
37:19I mean, I don't know how long ago you found him,
37:21but he's probably right now trying to figure out,
37:24is the heat really on?
37:25Do I need to skip town and start again?
37:28The disappointment that you're seeing in him may be that he hasn't.
37:31run the full grift yet.
37:33Just like in, um, Orange County.
37:37You know, he didn't finish that one.
37:42I had done what I set out to do.
37:45I found Anthony Strangus and I confronted him.
37:49But did I do enough to warn and protect another possible victim?
37:54The fact that I still hadn't figured out Jane Doe's place in all of this haunted me.
38:00Why didn't she tell me the truth about knowing him?
38:02If she is his latest victim, are his claws in her that deep?
38:08Was it shame and embarrassment over being tricked?
38:11I had so many questions.
38:13Would Sarma have reacted that way had I called her back then?
38:17I tried calling Jane Doe again, hoping to get through to her.
38:22The person you're trying to reach is not available.
38:25At the tone, please record your message.
38:28Hi .
38:29This is Elizabeth Chambers again.
38:31I genuinely just want to make sure that you are okay.
38:34I want to make sure your dogs are okay.
38:36I want to give you a space to talk.
38:38It can be on the record.
38:39It can be off the record, whatever.
38:41So if you would, please give me a call back.
38:44I look forward to hearing from you and I will hopefully speak with you soon.
38:47Bye.
38:50I never heard back from Jane Doe after that call.
38:53She disabled her LinkedIn and scrubbed her social media.
38:57My hope is that if Anthony is still conning and if she is his latest victim,
39:03then this intervention caused her to look deeper, to question who Anthony really is.
39:12Mikayla, I said words to Anthony on your behalf, but what would you say to him directly?
39:19I would say, Amp, I love you and I miss you.
39:23But at this point, until he actively has changed his life and gotten rehab and in therapy and no longer
39:36gambling at all,
39:37I wouldn't ever associate myself with him again.
39:42But if I was saying anything to anyone else, I would be saying to never involve yourself with him.
39:49Yeah.
39:51And I think it's important to take that me saying I miss him doesn't mean that he's a good person.
39:58He's just my brother.
40:01As I reflect on the months spent following the trail of alleged victims Anthony left in his wake,
40:06I'm grateful to all the people who spoke with me and shared the impact Anthony had on their life.
40:12But with each new story I learned, it was Sarma who weighed heaviest on my mind.
40:19Everyone else, Mikayla, Eddie, Glenn, the Johnsons, were all left rebuilding a piece of their life Anthony damaged.
40:27Sarma didn't just lose a piece of her life.
40:30She lost almost everything to Anthony's manipulation and coercion.
40:34And she's still, to this day, reclaiming what he took from her.
40:39I hope now we have set the record straight about Anthony Strangis and his alleged cons.
40:46I'm just proud of you. Honestly, I'm really proud of you.
40:48We've all been through , but you've been through some deep, deep, deep , and especially doing it alone.
40:53Like, I feel like I'm doing that in my own way, but I think a lot of people look up
40:58to you, and I really hope this story inspires.
41:01Thank you very much.
