00:01it's official when it comes to our dogs we want to do everything with them and
00:05rightly so because after all they are our best friends however what are the
00:08do's and don'ts when it comes to looking after our slightly older four-legged
00:12friends I've teamed up with fourth grade and I'm going to share with you some
00:16advice on how to look after our elderly dogs
00:22I've seen it with my own dogs as you get all those happy memories together your
00:26relationship with them it just grows stronger and stronger and stronger we
00:30just owe it to them to give them their best life possible through their
00:33retirement diet is so important for our senior dogs as they reach around seven
00:38years old it's a good idea to think about changing their diet to something that
00:42contains fewer calories maybe lower fats has the right balance of vitamins and
00:45minerals and could have other added benefits such as salmon oil or
00:48glucosamine and chondroitin they can help with things like brain function and
00:52stiffening joints when it comes to exercise a lot of us think our older
00:56dogs don't need as much exercise as they did when they were younger and that
00:59probably is true to a degree but it is really important that you do keep them
01:03moving but do keep it within their own individual capabilities if you do spot
01:08that they look like they might be having some stiffening joints creeping in then
01:11do talk to your vets because there's loads we can do to help and keep them
01:14moving mental stimulation in our senior dogs is so so important we know dogs do
01:20suffer with things like doggy dementia so keeping things in a bit of a
01:23routine you know get them using their minds use puzzle feeders set up toys play
01:28games with them all really important ways to just keep that brain function
01:32healthy and don't forget it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks
01:48and that's a wrap so hopefully you've learned some interesting facts from me and
01:52Rudy here and you feel confident about better caring for your canine companion
