The Farsley Community Orchard is a shared green space cared for by local volunteers, bringing together heritage fruit trees, wildlife habitats, and a place for people to gather throughout the year. Each spring, the orchard becomes a focal point as the trees come into blossom and the community marks the season with a picnic, giving visitors a chance to slow down and spend time in a setting shaped by the community itself.

00:00On the 2nd of May we're hosting a blossom picnic here at Farsley Community
00:04Orchard which is next to Farsley Cricket and Bowls Club and it's going to be a
00:11fun morning for families. We'll have some good activities, everything's free so
00:16people can show up at any point during the morning between 10 and 12. We'll have
00:20some little activities for children like making some seed bombs and we'll have a
00:26storyteller, we'll have some music I hope as well. The Blossom Picnic is a
00:31celebration of 10 years of just celebrating the space. When we came here
00:35it was just you know a rough piece of land and a few of us got together and
00:40said let's do something that's for the community you know that's you know
00:44people can come and this is like Farsley's little secret space so we've got loads of
00:49fruit trees we've got we've done some hedgerow as well that's edible and we've
00:54planted some wild flowers so you know in a way it's it's a space for the
00:58community to enjoy to chill out. Really excited to kind of be a part of it at
01:04the right at the beginning where it was as Catherine said really just a plain
01:07field that was just mowed and nothing was here and it's changed beyond belief so
01:12now all the trees are established and you can see from the blossom and so being a
01:16part of something from from this day one to ten years later with various events
01:22that we're having we've had school groups scout groups come through lots of
01:26local residents have come through and planted and
01:29celebrated the various seasons with us so yeah that that's been
01:34the the enjoying part of it the enjoyment of it. The location is just a
01:39little bit out of the centre of Farsley which means that
01:43people until they find out about it when they come here so for instance
01:46some people have come maybe during lockdown who maybe didn't realise that it
01:51was here discovered something new and because we've
01:54because we've done some planting especially the hedgerows that we've put
01:57next to the where the ring road is that helps to
02:02keep the noise down a bit and it provides habitat for animals.
02:05We are hoping to sort of carry on the orchard
02:08and it still needs maintaining it very well established but
02:11you know there are jobs to be done throughout the season
02:14as well as celebrating it in the nicer weather
02:17with the blossom picnic. One of the things that is really great about this
02:21space it's it's its longevity and it's um
02:23you know in the in the digital age where everything's immediate
02:26we've got something here that's permanent long term
02:30you know and so that's something that we're all really proud of.
02:33I can say that I've made some good friends by
02:36by volunteering and and working with people just by
02:38hanging out where we have similar interests and and we've we've done
02:42something fun together so that's that's been something I've benefited from
02:45volunteering and joining in with the group. We fall under the umbrella of the
02:50Love Farsley Community Interest Company. Once you start building the community
02:54in a place like Farsley and working together then we can do even more than
02:58we could do before.
