01:08:17throwing it

01:08:17out and

01:08:18the one

01:08:18millimeter hole

01:08:19was letting it

01:08:20in so instead

01:08:21of drowning

01:08:21in solid

01:08:23oil the

01:08:24gears were

01:08:25able to do

01:08:26what gears

01:08:26do transmit

01:08:27power run

01:08:28out eat

01:08:28it so uh

01:08:31ron pierce

01:08:32qualified on

01:08:32pole and

01:08:34kel must have

01:08:35said to

01:08:36himself well

01:08:37shit i gotta

01:08:38go do it

01:08:39which meant

01:08:40um what i

01:08:42described for

01:08:43the 250

01:08:43widening raising

01:08:45the exhaust

01:08:45ports taking

01:08:50and compression

01:08:52that ought

01:08:53to do

01:08:54and my

01:08:55bike was

01:08:56out with a

01:08:56water pump

01:08:58failure how

01:08:59can water

01:09:00fail anyway

01:09:02that's what

01:09:03happened and

01:09:04uh kenny

01:09:08prevails so

01:09:12i in those

01:09:13days i wanted

01:09:14to go to

01:09:15daytona and

01:09:16live there and

01:09:17and just

01:09:17just try

01:09:18stuff but i

01:09:20remember

01:09:20hearing um

01:09:23gene romero

01:09:24say why do

01:09:26we have to

01:09:26be here all

01:09:27week i want

01:09:27to just get

01:09:28in race and

01:09:30go home

01:09:31and i thought

01:09:32i am not

01:09:33sympathetic to

01:09:34this viewpoint

01:09:37but uh

01:09:39people come to

01:09:40daytona for

01:09:41different reasons

01:09:42well you know

01:09:43for it got

01:09:45popular because

01:09:45it was there's

01:09:47so much of the

01:09:47country that's

01:09:48still suffering

01:09:49the death

01:09:49grip of you

01:09:50know arctic

01:09:51biting frost

01:09:52you know and

01:09:54it's always the

01:09:54place where we

01:09:55you know people

01:09:56got got to be

01:09:57set free it

01:09:58wasn't the cool

01:09:58west coast you

01:09:59know all those

01:10:00east coast people

01:10:00you were you

01:10:01among them

01:10:02getting in the

01:10:03van slogging

01:10:04through the

01:10:05slush to the

01:10:06beautiful sunny

01:10:07climbs and

01:10:08and slightly

01:10:09humid spring air

01:10:10of daytona

01:10:11beach waiting

01:10:12remember phil

01:10:13shilling the

01:10:14late phil

01:10:14shilling uh

01:10:16arriving on a

01:10:17flight from

01:10:18california wearing

01:10:19his puffy jacket

01:10:20and he would wear

01:10:22it all week

01:10:23because he was

01:10:25never warm

01:10:27and daytona

01:10:29we you know

01:10:29we're we're

01:10:30basking in this

01:10:31wonderful sunlight

01:10:32and he's in

01:10:34his in his

01:10:35puffy jacket

01:10:36i always thought

01:10:37that was another

01:10:39take on

01:10:40daytona

01:10:42yeah you

01:10:43mentioned ron

01:10:43pierce he was

01:10:44down there as

01:10:45well

01:10:46yeah yeah

01:10:47he ron ron

01:10:48was there he's

01:10:48got a big

01:10:48winery that he

01:10:49makes wine at

01:10:50and uh

01:10:51the trailblazer

01:10:52yeah the trailblazers

01:10:53dinner is is this

01:10:54week and uh

01:10:56ron's going and

01:10:57ron always brings

01:10:58the wine he's

01:10:58driving down with

01:10:5925 cases apparently

01:11:01for the trailblazers

01:11:02it was really cool

01:11:03i he they had

01:11:04signature like uh

01:11:06autograph cards

01:11:07at the tent where

01:11:08everyone was sitting

01:11:09around talking to

01:11:10people and i picked

01:11:11up one because

01:11:12if you look at

01:11:13this this photo

01:11:14here he's with

01:11:14pops yoshimura

01:11:15sure and that's

01:11:16ron pierce and

01:11:17he's got his team

01:11:18cycle world shirt on

01:11:19so we had a little

01:11:20chit chat about

01:11:20you know the days

01:11:22and joe joe parker

01:11:23slub of racing and

01:11:24all that was it was

01:11:26pretty remarkable

01:11:26another thing about

01:11:27daytona of course is

01:11:29you can expect the

01:11:30possibility of tire

01:11:31trouble you can the

01:11:33rider comes in says

01:11:35things vibrating in a

01:11:37funny way and you

01:11:38look at the rear tire

01:11:39and it has

01:11:40pops pimples that

01:11:41have burst

01:11:43black rubber

01:11:44pops pimples

01:11:45that is blistering

01:11:47components of the

01:11:49tire tread

01:11:50compound

01:11:50are

01:11:51vaporizing

01:11:52at temperature

01:11:53and

01:11:54erupting

01:11:55and the other

01:11:57one of course is

01:11:58chunking

01:11:59failure of the

01:12:00bond between the

01:12:01tread rubber

01:12:02and the fiber

01:12:04carcass

01:12:04of the tire

01:12:06barry sheen

01:12:07had his

01:12:08bad

01:12:09accident

01:12:10in 75

01:12:11with chunking

01:12:13the motorcycle

01:12:14and the tire

01:12:15and everything

01:12:16about that

01:12:17whole episode

01:12:17just disappeared

01:12:19in a twinkling

01:12:19of an eye

01:12:20but news

01:12:21no nothing

01:12:21happened

01:12:22what

01:12:24and so

01:12:26when

01:12:27michelin tires

01:12:28were being put

01:12:30on some

01:12:30bikes at

01:12:31daytona

01:12:31you could count

01:12:33on the michelin

01:12:34people being there

01:12:35to make sure you

01:12:36had I don't

01:12:37know some

01:12:37tremendous pressure

01:12:38like 42 pounds

01:12:40in your tires

01:12:41because one

01:12:42the one thing

01:12:43just as the

01:12:44ama

01:12:45wanted to avoid

01:12:47being criticized

01:12:48in cycle

01:12:49news

01:12:51michelin

01:12:51didn't want

01:12:52bad

01:12:53daytona luck

01:12:54and so

01:12:55the riders

01:12:56responded

01:12:57to

01:12:59these

01:13:00michelin

01:13:00guys

01:13:00stationed

01:13:01at the

01:13:02entry

01:13:02to pit

01:13:03lane

01:13:03with

01:13:04air bottles

01:13:05and gauges

01:13:06airing up

01:13:07every michelin

01:13:08shod bike

01:13:09as it goes

01:13:09through

01:13:11the riders

01:13:12had their

01:13:13men

01:13:13down at

01:13:14the end

01:13:14to let

01:13:15that pressure

01:13:16back out

01:13:16so they

01:13:17would have

01:13:17some grip

01:13:19and michelin

01:13:20carries on

01:13:21that tradition

01:13:21to this day

01:13:22with the

01:13:23tire pressure

01:13:23rule in

01:13:24moto gp

01:13:25that you

01:13:26could be

01:13:26fined by

01:13:27people who

01:13:27work in

01:13:28offices

01:13:28because they're

01:13:29going through

01:13:29sheets and

01:13:30sheets of

01:13:31tire data

01:13:34if your

01:13:34tire is

01:13:35below a

01:13:36certain

01:13:36pressure

01:13:36for a

01:13:37certain

01:13:38percentage

01:13:38of the

01:13:39race

01:13:39you are

01:13:40sanctioned

01:13:43yep

01:13:44but the

01:13:45riders are

01:13:46tempted

01:13:46to begin

01:13:47with a

01:13:48lower

01:13:48pressure

01:13:49just because

01:13:50when you're

01:13:51drafting

01:13:53other bikes

01:13:54your front

01:13:55tire pressure

01:13:55will go up

01:13:56up up

01:13:57and your

01:13:57footprint

01:13:57nice and

01:13:59healthy

01:13:59will dwindle

01:14:01away and

01:14:02you'll find

01:14:03that the

01:14:03front is

01:14:03locking

01:14:04when you're

01:14:04braking

01:14:05so you're

01:14:06caught

01:14:06between

01:14:10contrasting

01:14:14goals

01:14:15i picked

01:14:16up a

01:14:16bike

01:14:17from our

01:14:17office one

01:14:18time in

01:14:18r1 that

01:14:19had some

01:14:20dot race

01:14:22tires i think

01:14:22they were

01:14:23michelins and

01:14:24i didn't know

01:14:24the correct

01:14:25pressure and

01:14:25it's hard with

01:14:26race tires

01:14:26sometimes it's

01:14:27hard to find

01:14:28that info

01:14:28unless you get

01:15:03was at chuck

01:15:03walla talked

01:15:04to a couple

01:15:04people and

01:15:06and uh did

01:15:07some more

01:15:07research and i

01:15:08found it was

01:15:08meant to be

01:15:0822 so i was

01:15:10eight eight to

01:15:11ten pounds over

01:15:12depending on what

01:15:12my final decision

01:15:13was and boy when i

01:15:14put it 22 what a

01:15:15great tire that

01:15:16was it was

01:15:18superb got some

01:15:20footprint now

01:15:21yep well that

01:15:22was uh that's the

01:15:23daytona 200 a

01:15:24little bit of this

01:15:25and a little bit

01:15:26of that it walked

01:15:26down memory lane

01:15:27for us plus um

01:15:29recounting this

01:15:30year's very

01:15:30exciting race and

01:15:32a lot of

01:15:33history going

01:15:33on it was

01:15:34great to be

01:15:35there and

01:15:36see it again

01:15:36being be down

01:15:37in the spring

01:15:38in daytona it's

01:15:39been a long

01:15:39time since i

01:15:40did that i

01:15:41got to ride

01:15:41steve mclaughlin's

01:15:42bike on a

01:15:43parade lap you

01:15:44know around the

01:15:45banking we did a

01:15:46lap i lined up

01:15:47with sad wolf and

01:15:48jason uribe who's

01:15:50racing the orange

01:15:50cat um factory

01:15:52backed bmw and

01:15:53moto america so

01:15:55he was there on

01:15:55a essentially on

01:15:56a you know

01:15:57press press deal

01:15:59he wasn't

01:15:59racing and uh

01:16:01yeah it was it

01:16:02was fun it was

01:16:03cool to check out

01:16:05one of those i

01:16:05raced a bmw in

01:16:06arma so it was a

01:16:07fun fun connection

01:16:08to make for me

01:16:09personally and uh

01:16:10to be honored with

01:16:11steve's bike and

01:16:12steve was there and

01:16:13he's i believe he's

01:16:14as much steve

01:16:15mclaughlin as he

01:16:16ever has been so

01:16:18and he was he was

01:16:19a little wound up

01:16:20because they were

01:16:20getting headlines in

01:16:21germany about 80

01:16:22year old steve

01:16:23mclaughlin rides

01:16:24his old super bmw

01:16:26super bike again

01:16:27because he did a

01:16:27parade lap himself

01:16:28yeah jim france he's

01:16:30friends with jim france

01:16:31and jim france asked

01:16:32him to do it moto

01:16:33america said please

01:16:34don't cross the

01:16:35stripe we need we

01:16:36have we don't have

01:16:37very much time go

01:16:38out pit lane do

01:16:39the lap and don't

01:16:40cross the stripe come

01:16:41into the pit and

01:16:43steve said you know

01:16:45this was jim france's

01:16:46idea can you take

01:16:47that back to the

01:16:48people telling us not

01:16:49to do this jim would

01:16:50like me to cross the

01:16:51stripe and so they

01:16:52took it back and said

01:16:53hey this when they

01:16:55came back hey that

01:16:55worked so he got to

01:16:56he got to do his

01:16:58lap and well i i just

01:17:00thought of something

01:17:00you know um kayla

01:17:03being 18 reminded me

01:17:06of a photo one of

01:17:08those dim looking

01:17:10black and white photos

01:17:11from world war ii that

01:17:13show the uh king of

01:17:16england bestowing some

01:17:19medal upon 19 year old

01:17:21john cunningham a an

01:17:24experienced knight fighter

01:17:26pilot who went up

01:17:28every night in a twin

01:17:31engine airplane with

01:17:32his radar operator

01:17:34kneeling on the deck

01:17:35plate behind him with

01:17:37two scopes one for x

01:17:38and one for y and he's

01:17:42calling out left a bit

01:17:44now that looks good okay

01:17:47you should just about be

01:17:48seeing his exhaust flames

01:17:50now and there's nothing

01:17:53wrong with being young and

01:17:56there's nothing about being

01:17:57young that means that you're

01:17:59necessarily inexperienced or

01:18:01lacking in judgment it just

01:18:03depends on the path you've

01:18:05drawn to that age john

01:18:08cunningham later became chief

01:18:10test pilots for chess pilot i

01:18:12think for

01:18:14they have one you're one of the

01:18:15biggies that they used to have

01:18:17in england making aircraft

01:18:19well self-confidence people to

01:18:22people helping you people not

01:18:23telling you know people telling

01:18:25you you can't do it no or if they

01:18:27do you you must be self-possessed

01:18:30enough to uh to overcome that and

01:18:32great confidence to someone like

01:18:34kayla who obviously would have

01:18:36faced a lot of challenges to get

01:18:38where she is yep so um mad

01:18:42respect to uh a really great

01:18:44and interesting career path to
