07:59Camille's mom tapped lightly on the bedroom door and let herself in,
08:04her face bright with excitement.
08:05Oh, Camille!
08:07You are going to absolutely love this new headband!
08:10Just look at what I found!
08:12Camille pulled herself away from her microscope and turned around,
08:15shrugging her shoulders with a look of pure annoyance.
08:18Ugh, Mom!
08:19I told you, I'm just not into all that girly, fluffy pink stuff!
08:23Oop!
08:24But, but!
08:25Her mother stammered, holding the headband up.
08:28I just know you would look darling with it on.
08:30Especially with this new pink dress!
08:33I got to go along with it!
08:34Camille immediately pushed her arms out,
08:37physically barricading herself as if her mom were holding a fluffy, pink monster.
08:42Absolutely not!
08:43Camille stated firmly.
08:45Mom, how many times do we have to go over this?
08:48Pink is just not for me!
08:50Camille, please!
08:51Her mother pleaded.
08:52There was such a good sale.
08:54I even bought matching mommy and daughter dresses and everything.
08:58Camille didn't budge.
08:59She folded her arms tight across her chest and rolled her eyes toward the ceiling.
09:04Oh, don't mind me!
09:05She muttered.
09:06I'm just over here ignoring my insistent mom until she takes those ugly pink monstrosities out of the room.
09:12Her mother let out a long, dramatic sigh, looking down at the ruffles.
09:17I guess maybe you just don't want to be my little princess anymore.
09:20I suppose I'll just have to take these things back to the store tomorrow.
09:24She turned toward the door, adding with a weary shrug.
09:28Can't say I didn't try, right?
09:30Camille's mom didn't give up just yet.
09:32She popped back into the room, clutching a few more matching pink accessories.
09:36All or nothing, she chirped.

09:39I still have this lovely purse and these shoes.

09:46Okay, forget it, forget it, her mom cried.
09:49She swung the items around so fast they became a blur,
09:52making a loud zoom pattern in the air as the purse and shoes flew back into her arms in one

10:00Camille crossed her arms again, but this time, her gaze drifted up toward the ceiling.
10:05Her expression softened, looking a bit sad.
10:08Mom, Camille said quietly.
10:11I just wish, sometimes, you'd stop trying to make me into a Barbie doll and just see me for me.
10:16Camille's words hit her mother like a ton of bricks.
10:19A wave of guilt washed over her as she stood there empty-handed.
10:23She thinks I don't see her.
10:24She wondered.
10:26For the first time, she truly questioned the role she had played in making Camille feel this way.
10:31She took a shaky breath, trying to keep the sadness from showing on her face.
10:36You, you should probably get ready for breakfast, she said, letting out a nervous, brittle laugh.
10:42Wouldn't want to be late for school.
10:43Camille didn't look back.
10:45She remained visibly upset.
10:47Her shoulders slumped.
10:49Yeah, she muttered.
10:50Sure.
10:51The savory smell of frying eggs filled the kitchen.
10:54Camille sat at the table, reaching for her bowl of Blue O's cereal instead.
10:59For a moment, a glimmer of happiness lit up her face.
11:03She truly thought the conversation about the pink clothes had finally ended.
11:07Her mom stood at the stove, busy cooking the eggs, but she didn't let the subject drop.
11:12You know, Camille, eggs are also part of a balanced breakfast, she said over her shoulder.
11:18You don't have to do everything the opposite of mommy.
11:21Camille tried to focus on her cereal, but her mom continued.
11:25I just can't believe you wouldn't at least try on any of the lovely things I got for you.
11:30It's so rare to catch such an amazing sale.
11:32They had to practically pry me out of that store.

11:37I'm sorry, but it's absolutely fabulous.
11:40The joy Camille had felt just seconds ago vanished.
11:43The light in her eyes died out, and her happiness quickly turned to hot, silent tears.
11:48Stop, Mom!
11:50Camille shouted, her voice breaking as the tears fell down her face.
11:54She stood up, facing her mother right there in the middle of the kitchen.
11:58I do not like pink, okay?
12:00I am your princess, but not every princess needs to be pink.
12:04I love blue and science and basketball.
12:07Her mother stood still, finally looking directly at her daughter instead of the clothes or the breakfast.
12:13The room went quiet as Camille's words hung in the air, and for the first time, things finally began to
12:19sink in for Camille's mom.
12:20Mom began to cry along with Camille.
12:23She reached out and held her daughter in a long, tight hug.
12:27Down on the floor, the pink dress and the headband lay forgotten.
12:31Mom didn't want to push Camille into being pink anymore.
12:34She didn't want Camille to lose the things that made her special.
12:37She only wanted to be a loving, supportive mother to her adorable princess.
12:42Everything was different now.
12:44Mom finally, truly saw her daughter.
12:47She was ready to embrace and accept Camille exactly as she was.
12:51Suddenly, Mom's face lit up.
12:53She had a brilliant idea.
12:54She remembered the bottle of blue dye tucked away in the back of the kitchen cupboard.
12:59She reached down and picked up one of the pink dresses.
13:02Camille's face started to scrunch up into a frown.
13:05She was worried her mom was starting all over again.
13:08But then Mom smiled.
13:09I've got it!
13:10Mom said excitedly.
13:12I have this blue dye, Camille.
13:14We're going to change these dresses into your favorite color for my little girl.
13:18Camille's frown vanished.
13:20She watched as her mom got to work, mixing the colors together.
13:24Instead of plain blue, the dresses began to swirl and spin with color.
13:28They came out in a beautiful, bright, tight eye.
13:31Wow, Mom!
13:32Camille cheered.
13:33Her eyes wide as she looked at the new colors.
13:36These actually look absolutely amazing.
13:39I love the tight eye flare.
13:40And I love it even more because it's a little bit of me and a little bit of you.
13:45Mom beamed, wiping away the last of her happy tears.
13:49I'm so glad you love it, she said.
13:51And what's better than awesome outfits custom made by a mommy and her adorable princess?
13:56A mommy and Camille pink and blue fashion show, of course.
13:59Let's strut our stuff.

14:02Mom finally saw Camille as the tie-dye princess she truly was.
14:06She went all out, tie-dying a rug, axe and pillows, and even a big, beautiful banner.
14:12They even dragged a small sofa into the kitchen to make it a real-life runway.
14:17Mom stood back and looked at Camille, her heart full of pride.
14:20She felt so much satisfaction, knowing she had finally found a way to make her daughter truly happy.
14:26No more pink monstrosities.
14:29Just the perfect mix of both of them.
14:31Mom, this is so amazing, Camille said, glowing as she stood in the center of her new, colorful world.
14:38I'm so glad we got to spend this time together.
