00:05George, the name of your show is so apropos to what needs to be done here.
00:10You coming to Dana's rescue is exactly what she needs, a rescue.
00:15I, as a father, I would be forever in your debt.
00:18Oh my goodness.
00:21Look at that.
00:30Hi, my name is Dana.
00:32I live in Morganville, New Jersey.
00:34I'm the mother of two kids.
00:36Makayla, I guess I would describe her as feisty.
00:38She's very into fashion.
00:39She's very into dance.
00:41She's very into makeup.
00:42Came out good.
00:43Tyler is 24.
00:45He was a competitive gymnast his whole life, and now he's a high school cheer coach.
00:50I was very young when I had Tyler, and we kind of grew up as, like, siblings or friends.
00:57Dana is very close with her dad, Gary.
01:00Gary lives nearby, and he proudly embraced a father figure role for her two kids.
01:05When I grew up, I really didn't know my grandfather.
01:08I never wanted to be that guy.
01:10You know, all 13 grandkids, I wanted to be in their life.
01:13That's the way I am with Makayla and Tyler.
01:20Dana was very easy to raise.
01:22Always there for everybody.
01:25You know, typical oldest child who always took care of her younger siblings,
01:29and now as an adult, doing the same for her kids.
01:32I have two jobs.
01:33I'm a hospital social worker, helping families get them from point A to point B,
01:37and then to kind of supplement.
01:40Then I waitress.
01:41It's pretty busy.
01:42I honestly don't know how my mom does it, because if I were her, I don't think I'd be able
01:47to.
01:47None of it going to her.
01:48I don't remember the last time Dana went on a vacation, unless it was with the two kids.
01:55As I was growing up, my mom was diagnosed with MS when I was in high school.
02:02She still cuts hair.
02:04She's a hairstylist.
02:05She's on her feet.
02:05She did MS bike rides.
02:07She was like, I'm not going to allow this to be, you know, what defines me.
02:14After I had Tyler, I was starting to get some of the symptoms that she did,
02:19and then after about a week of testing, they found out that I had MS as well.
02:23But I'd had that role model of, like, this doesn't define you.
02:28Despite all the years that Dana has been dealing with MS,
02:32she is now confronted with a new challenge that she has to deal with going forward.
02:39As my MS, like, progresses, everything that happens to you when you have MS is you just assume it's MS.
02:45So your foot's numb.
02:47You're like, oh, it's MS.
02:48Or you have trouble with your stomach.
02:50You're like, oh, it's my MS.
02:51And then I finally was like, let me just go to a doctor and just get a full checkup.
02:56They had found two large masses the size of, like, footballs.
03:00I ended up with stage four adenoid carcinoma that started in my small bowel
03:07and then progressed to both ovaries.
03:11So I needed to have five centimeters of my small bowel taken out
03:14and a complete hysterectomy to remove all of that.
03:20This latest diagnosis for my dad kind of hit very close to home,
03:25also because he had two sisters who have both died from this diagnosis.
03:31Knowing that two of her aunts passed away from this,
03:34but still have, you know, the wherewithal and the strength to push through and say,
03:40listen, I'm not going to be that.
03:41I'm going to beat this.
03:45While admirably navigating chemotherapy, two jobs, and life as a single mother,
03:50Dana hasn't been able to tackle several ongoing home challenges.
03:53Dana has lived in her home for nearly two and a half decades.
03:57Now, this dated and increasingly hazardous space,
03:59it's just not suited for her changing needs.
04:02Recognizing his own renovation limitations,
04:04Gary humbly and discreetly nominated his daughter for a rescue.
04:08It's time for it to get an upgrade, to brighten up.
04:18I think if George to the rescue were to come out,
04:21it would be life-changing because it would allow for those safety concerns to be fixed.
04:26It would still allow the kids to be able to do the things they love,
04:30and it would give them kind of a sense of pride in the house.
04:33George, the name of your show is so apropos to what needs to be done here.
04:38You coming to Dana's rescue is exactly what she needs, a rescue.
04:43I, as a father, would be so beholden to you to be able to get this done.
04:48I would be, you know, forever in your debt.
04:52Hey, Dana!
04:54What's up? How you doing?
04:56All of a sudden, we opened our door, and George to the rescue was there.
04:59It was just an amazing feeling.
05:02When you wrote in telling me about your daughter,
05:04I just felt, again, as a father looking out for his girl.
05:07You have a tough stretch ahead of you,
05:09and I just want you to know that we're here to support you,
05:11and we're going to take care of your home,
05:13and that stuff's done, all right?
05:15Cat's out of the bag. We're doing a rescue.
05:16We're coming in. We're going to fix this place up.
05:18No, please. Come on.
05:19I do it for the hugs, though. I do it for the hugs.
05:21Thank you. Thank you.
05:23Dana, no, please.
05:27George to the Rescue is sponsored in part by Filtrete Air Filters.
05:30Don't just treat your air. Filtrete it.
05:44This is Dana Mikayla's place.
05:47This is where they've been for 23 years.
05:49For 20 of them, she's been battling MS,
05:51and so every time she put money,
05:54aside to renovate,
05:56the rug just got ripped out from under,
05:57and some medical issue happened.
05:59Dana is an awesome single mom
06:01that was just diagnosed with cancer,
06:03so we're really trying to make this home
06:06not only beautiful for her,
06:07but also functional.
06:09What do you think?
06:10Definitely a lot of brown.
06:13A lot of transitions, too.
06:15There's like three or four different floors in here.
06:18I feel disjointed just looking at the way
06:20everything's just patchworked,
06:21and then from the floor up,
06:23it lacks a lot.
06:24We have four sources of light
06:26in this entire space.
06:27Yeah, I think some recessed lighting throughout
06:29will really brighten the space
06:31and kind of make the spaces all part of each other
06:34rather than separating them.
06:36The kitchen's very tight.
06:38As soon as you walk in,
06:39it's just so dark and dreary.
06:40Right now, there's no dishwasher.
06:43That's something that is actually detrimental to Dana
06:45because she's going through chemotherapy right now.
06:47Things need to be sanitized.
06:48Because we need to make this kitchen better.
06:50Oh, here we go.
06:54We're on a racetrack.
06:55What?
06:56This bathroom has definitely got the noisiest fan
06:58I've ever seen on George's Rescue.
07:00The helicopter exhaust fan,
07:02that thing's got to go immediately.
07:04I can't really hear myself think.
07:06It only gets worse.
07:07And so the tiles,
07:09yeah, I could have just actually pulled that one off
07:10right there if I had to.
07:12The bathroom has actually started the demo itself.
07:14There were some tiles falling off the wall as we speak.
07:17I can't hear you.
07:18That's true.
07:18It's great.
07:19At least it's not brown.
07:22Jeez Louise, let's get in there.
07:23Let's pop these things out.
07:24We're not saving them.
07:26Oh, dear God.
07:28I don't think we're going to run into much resistance here.
07:30I think this place hasn't been touched in a very long time
07:32and begging us to finish the job.
07:35Oh, my God.
07:37He's slowed.
07:38Heads up.
07:40Vito's coming through.
07:44Talk about bull in a china shop.
07:46Tasmanian devil.
07:47This guy.
07:49Vito is insane.
07:52He's swinging timers.
07:53He's bleeding.
07:54He's here to work.
07:58I might like to tear some things up.
08:01So storage is a huge issue here.
08:03There's a wall in the kitchen that I think is totally in the wrong spot.
08:07We're going to take that wall, bring it back.
08:08Vito, let's kick this wall down.
08:10Let it rip.
08:15Of course, I can't let Vito have all the fun.
08:18You guys know that I love taking down walls,
08:20so I showed him how I do it.
08:24It is dirty!
08:30It already looks better.
08:32As we make it through all the levels here on Wreck-It Ralph,
08:35it's time for the finale, the bathroom.
08:41I have never in my life heard a noise like the one in Dana's bathroom.
08:45Definitely we'll fix that.
08:47I think what we're going to also do is take out the curb to the shower.
08:51With the MS diagnosis,
08:52we're definitely going to want something that's easily accessible.
08:55And then all new tiles to really spruce up the space.
08:58That looks unpleasant, to say the least.
09:01A little bit of a mold problem on that bad boy.
09:09Introducing the new Scotch-Mount Multi-Purpose Gel Tape.
09:12Need epic strength or convenient removal?
09:15This double-sided tape holds up to 20 pounds on hard surfaces
09:19like metal, tempered glass, tile, painted wood, brick, and more.
09:23Perfect for quick fixes or lasting solutions.
09:26It's the only tape you'll need for projects big or small.
09:29Permanent with more tape, removable with less.
09:32Scotch-Mount Multi-Purpose Gel Tape gets the job done.
09:35One tape, endless possibilities.
09:43A little bit of a mold problem on that bad boy.
09:47The reason these tiles aren't sticking is because we have some mold back there.
09:53So, we're actually just going to cut this entire wall out.
10:02Oh my god!
10:04It's looking so amazing!
10:06Right?
10:07Right?
10:07Yeah, well, Dave and his team from Galaxy Floor are literally, like, knocking it out, like, boom, boom, boom!
10:12All of our plumbing roughs complete, we have our electrical roughs complete, we've got the drywall completed,
10:17we are finishing up the spackle, and we're moving along.
10:23I'd love to give an amazing shout-out to Carpet Yard.
10:26They hooked us up with the most amazing LVP flooring.
10:28This is, like, a hundred percent upgrade.
10:30I mean, just from the fact that it's all one flooring, we're removing the transitions,
10:34Dan doesn't have to worry about tripping on saddles and uneven flooring and all that.
10:39All right, all together now!
10:41Oh, yeah!
10:43Who's ready?
10:44We're ready!
10:45We're ready!
10:48They say it's going to be a big day on George Strasky.
10:51That means everybody's converging at once.
10:55We have Mr. M Home Design Center coming today.
10:58They're providing all the cabinetry for the kitchen and back.
11:01The boys from the Stone Yard, Oceana Designs, New Jersey, they have arrived.
11:05There's our backsplash, there's our countertops.
11:08Everything we need to bring Dana's kitchen to fruition.
11:11Out with the old, in with the new, that's our old water heater.
11:14Dana is dealing with enough with her MS and her cancer and her chemo.
11:20The last thing she needs to worry about is her water heater going out or her furnace going out.
11:24So Vito and I were able to get her a new ream water heater and furnace.
11:28And my friends at Dellon Sales and FW Webb were able to come through, deliver it.
11:32She won't have any more words.
11:35This is all of our tile, right, Allie?
11:37Yes! So Nemo Tile donated all the tile.
11:40We have subway tile going into the shower area and we have nice big porcelain tiles going into the floor.
11:47Less grout lines equals easier to clean and maintain.
11:50Ferguson was able to donate all the plumbing fixtures and we decided to go with a glass door for the
11:56shower.
11:56That Gatsby glass was able to provide for us.
11:59Everything is getting refreshed.
12:00Everything is being brought up to just a level that Dana deserves.
12:06All right. After you, Allie.
12:08Thanks, George.
12:11Today we're at Homestead in Princeton. It's a beautifully curated store that focuses on homemade furnishings, accessories, upholstery and more.
12:22Every once in a while they let me off the job site and the designer takes me shopping. These are
12:27my favorite days because I'm like a kid in a candy store.
12:30Are you testing lotions, George?
12:32That is so fresh and so clean. Can you smell that?
12:35I can't see where I'm going.
12:37Ooh, this one's a chili.
12:38How nice would these be for Dana?
12:42I get it, Pooh Bear.
12:44Honey's awesome.
12:45Oh, that one's spicy!
12:48So the five rules that I think make the best space are comfort, color, function, light, and life.
12:57What about sound? Is sound one of the rules?
13:00I don't know if sound fits the checklist.
13:06I think I'm going to leave George here.
13:09Sounds good to me.
13:12I think we found some things that we need.
13:14Perfect. Stage me. Life, comfort. We got two.
13:18It's looking great. Stay right there.
13:20Okay. Yep. Okay. Got it. Light.
13:22We need one more thing. We need function.
13:24Function. We need function.
13:26Perfect.
13:26Package me up. Send me away.
13:28We need to wrap this.
13:31Hey, I'm George Oliphant, host of George to the Rescue.
13:34Spring is here, which means it's time to change your filter.
13:37You want to change your one-inch filters every three months.
13:40Six to 12 months for your larger filters.
13:42Caring for your home starts with caring for the air inside.
13:45For more info, visit Filtree.com.
13:52Oh, no.
13:53Washer, dryer's got to get out of the living room.
13:56We have a reveal to the family in a couple of days.
14:00We got a lot of work to do.
14:02I'm really ready for Homestead.
14:04What's up, guys?
14:05Here we go.
14:11All right. That's the last of the small stuff from Homestead.
14:14Now comes the sofa.
14:17We're a bit of a pickle here, guys.
14:18But I can kind of guide, at least, help.
14:22Oh, God.
14:23We're taking off the legs.
14:25Vito's ripping the windows out.
14:26We're trying to get the sofa up the stairs.
14:28We're this close.
14:31All right. Here we go, guys. Are you ready?
14:35Oh, my God! We're going to score!
14:39Touchdown!
14:39Oh!
14:41Oh! Oh, yes!
14:43Oh.
14:44Oh, you did it.
14:46Oh!
14:47Boom!
14:48All right, guys. Let's hit the showers.
14:54All right. Now that we got the sofa in, it's time to make this place home again.
14:58My plan for this renovation is always to keep things light and bright.
15:02Oh, so where's the ladder going?
15:04Right in the corner at an angle.
15:07Okay.
15:07Pillows, pillows, pillows everywhere.
15:10Coming in hot.
15:12This is going to go on the side table by the lamb.
15:16Look at that picture of Mikayla and Dana.
15:19I love that.
15:20It's going to be a happy house.
15:22It's very happy.
15:23Oh!
15:25We had brown walls.
15:27We had brown sofa.
15:28Now it's light and bright and airy and really forms an amazing space.
15:33It's literally night and day.
15:36Storage was a big issue for Dana.
15:38We were able to create a cupboard that also doubles as a coffee bar.
15:42And now that she has a really big coffee bar there, we were able to kind of turn this into
15:47a coat space, which they didn't have.
15:49Shuala!
15:50Rob from Closet Tech really pulled together this closet so well.
15:54It's hard to believe that this kitchen now has a dishwasher, new oven. I mean, everything is new.
16:01We got all of our appliances from Reno's. Everything is installed.
16:05Uh, we got a problem, Houston.
16:07There's no cookies in the cookie jar.
16:13Because of Dana's health issues, it was imperative that we switched out her HVAC system.
16:18And the only way that was possible is thanks to our friends at Crystal Air Associates.
16:24Oh, man. Look at this. Like a kid in a candy store. What's up, Brian? Good to see you, man.
16:28So excited to have you on The Rescue.
16:29Now, you've been in this business forever, I mean, right?
16:32Forty years.
16:32I'm sure in forty years, you've seen it all.
16:34So, what is the best way to protect your HVAC system?
16:38Routine maintenance. Constantly changing your filters and getting a good quality air filter.
16:43Filtrete MPR 1900 filters are the ones that we use on our routine maintenance agreements.
16:48It's a high MERV value and it gives you good quality air flow through the filter.
16:53What makes the Filtrete 1900 filter your favorite?
16:57Better quality air flow than all of the other leading MERV 13 filters.
17:02Industry standard. Filtrete makes all of their own filters themselves.
17:07Yep.
17:07The research and development behind it is incredible.
17:09So, the bottom line, trust the filter your HVAC Pro uses.
17:14Alright, Brian, I'm going to go install this. Thanks for all the help, my friend.
17:17Doing something as affordable as swapping out your filter four times a year
17:21is really protecting your investment in your HVAC system.
17:28The new floors, the new paint, the light, the color, the comfort, the coziness.
17:34It's all there. And it's all for Dana and Michaela.
17:37This place, top to bottom, is incredible.
17:40And the best part is...
17:43No more jet engine.
17:44Silence.
17:45Silence.
17:46This is my favorite type of rescue when literally no stone is left unturned.
17:49I can't wait to get the family home and show them.
17:52You can't wait to show them.
17:53Yeah.
17:54I can't wait to see their reaction.
17:55Well, it's going to be a good one. It's going to be an all-timer.
17:57Higley on three.
17:57Higley on three.
17:58We did it, guys.
17:59One, two, three.
18:00Higley!
18:02Oh, my goodness.
18:05Look at that.
18:15Hey, what's up, guys? Ready to come home?
18:17Yes.
18:18How are you?
18:19Oh, so good to see you.
18:21Dana has been going through her treatments.
18:23I'm sure they're ready to come back.
18:25It was definitely nice to have something to look forward to.
18:28The woman you are, the mother you are, you're an inspiration to so many.
18:31You're an inspiration to me.
18:32Without further ado, what do you say?
18:34Yes.
18:34You guys ready to come home?
18:35Yes.
18:36Let's do this.
18:39Oh, my goodness.
18:43Look at that.
18:50Oh, my God.
18:51It doesn't even look like the same place at all.
18:53Did you even notice this is our house?
18:55No.
18:55No.
18:59Oh, my God.
19:01It was so bright.
19:03When I saw this, this was like, this is the dream.
19:07I definitely feel more comfortable in the space.
19:09There used to be a lip into where the dining room table is.
19:12I must have caught my foot on it a million times.
19:14The steps were not safe.
19:16I probably had fallen down them more times than I could have counted.
19:19Filtered water right there on the ready.
19:22I love this.
19:23We got the whole closet organized for you.
19:26We got a doorknob.
19:29We didn't have a doorknob there, so it was really hard to get in and then get out.
19:32It's the little things, Mikayla. It's the little things.
19:35Go check out the kitchen.
19:36Oh, my goodness.
19:38Look how gorgeous.
19:39Wow.
19:44Wow.
19:44Oh, my God.
19:45Not too shabby, huh, Dan?
19:46No.
19:47It just is one of those kitchens that you just, like, want to be in.
19:50You want to be cooking in instead of trying to avoid it.
19:53Oh, so we added a little dishwasher in there.
19:56Do you want to keep the yarns?
19:56Oh, it's the best feature.
19:57Oh, it's fantastic.
19:58No one's ever seen my house before because I was ashamed of it.
20:00But now I feel like it is an amazing environment.
20:03Perfect place for me and my friends to go and hang out.
20:06Oh, my God.
20:09Oh, my goodness.
20:09Oh, my God.
20:14Fancy?
20:15Fancy, fancy.
20:16I'd look at the fan, Mikay.
20:18It's actually on, probably.
20:19That's on?
20:20It's quiet.
20:21That's beyond silent.
20:22I love it.
20:22No step for you to go over?
20:24No step.
20:24No step.
20:25No step.
20:25It's very, like, accessible for bad days.
20:28But it's also beautiful for your good days.
20:31You're gonna have to drag Mikayla out of here.
20:33For real.
20:39Touring it for the first time, it was almost like disbelief, like,
20:42that this was really my space.
20:44More than I could have ever imagined.
20:46It really wasn't a living house.
20:48It was just a stop-by house.
20:50Get changed.
20:51Get this.
20:52Get out.
20:53Now they're gonna want to stay, and they're gonna want to be here a lot more often.
20:57Here they are.
20:58The Dream Team.
20:59Oh, my God.
21:00It's so amazing.
21:02What a great job.
21:04I just wanted to tell everyone that renovated this space, like,
21:06thank you so much.
21:07My mom deserves everything in the world, and you made it her world.
21:10And they all just wanted to help my mom, and that was great.
21:13The biggest wish I have for my daughter is a return to good health,
21:17and then enjoying this home healthy.
21:19Having that village around you of family, whether it be blood family, or friend family,
21:26or outside family like you guys, has meant the whole world.
21:29I don't think that I could definitely have gone through this whole process without that.
21:33I think it just wouldn't have been able to happen.
21:38Welcome home.
21:40Enjoy it.
21:41Thanks, generous.
