00:02It's all kicking off on this tree-lined street in a big steel town as three house proud neighbors
00:07tussle to see whose home will stand above the rest. While the judges deconstruct every detail,
00:13the contestants pull up a seat ready to defend their turf. I think they're just trying to hide
00:18the haunting. Hide the haunting? I'm actually offended. I just feel like I'm in a dungeon.
00:24That's funny. There is a lot going on and I'm not loving it.
00:30Who are these judges? Lauren believes her old meets new vibe is the one to beat.
00:35I think my house is more than worthy. I've worked really hard to ensure that it stays
00:40in its historic nature while still keeping it up to date. Jessica is doubling down on her home's
00:46historic charm. I think our house is such a winner. There are some really unique architectural features
00:51that make it stand out. And Erin expects her signature style will steal the show. I think
00:56our house will beat any other in the street. We have a lot of very fun features that I don't
01:00think other houses have. When it's all said and judged, only one neighbor will serve up the swagger
01:05and claim the crown as top of the block. Known for its refined century-old homes, this neighborhood
01:14forgets its manners when the house rivalries kick off. And these judges are here to fan the flames by
01:20delivering their straight-up opinions. Design diva Amy. A good house has a soul. When I walk into a
01:27space, I can immediately see what isn't working. Real estate agent Mario. I love to critique homes.
01:33I'm not always the guy that thinks about what he's going to say and oftentimes it gets me in a
01:36little
01:36bit of trouble. And nosy neighbor Dave. I'm a DIY dad and I definitely know what I don't like.
01:43The rules of this competition are simple. The combination of design, function, and added value
01:48must give the winner the edge over the other houses. Here we go. Here we go. All right.
01:56This is where I would run and hide from my family when I needed a moment to myself.
02:00It's time to find out whose home will reign supreme. Let the house wars begin.
02:09I entered this competition because I am really house proud. I live in a beautiful Tudor revival
02:14historic home. The craftsmanship that's gone into this house is quite remarkable. Living here and
02:20being a steward of this house is really a privilege. A steward, Lauren? How posh. Oh my gosh.
02:26I think the judges will love the kitchen. It's updated but still maintains the historic character of
02:33the home. Sorry auntie. I want to win because I want to feel validated for all the hard work I
02:38put
02:38into this house. Looking good. I am excited about competing. I am also very nervous. It doesn't look
02:47natural. Decor is very personal but I worry about what the judges are going to think about my design
02:53style. Perfect.
03:04Worry no more Lauren because the judges are here ready to crank up the heat and you've got an
03:08unobstructed view. Here's the house guys. I love the different style of the brick on the top how they
03:14just change the direction of it. Beautiful detail. You've got a little bit of the Tudor happening with
03:18the stucco. That's nice. I'm a sucker for the limestone. Like it just screams old world, gothic. I love it.
03:26Gothic? I don't know about that. Haunted. Haunted? It's a Tudor revival. It's not haunted. He's just afraid of
03:32everything. I'm not going in that attic. I'll tell you that right now. That's where I sleep. I feel
03:38like we're in a subdivision from the 1890s. Oh my god. Come on. Really? I'm actually offended. So
03:46this is beautiful. It's a little different. Very nice vibe right? Yeah I love this door. The glasswork
03:51is beautiful. Even the details in the stairs with this old crest. Oh I love that. Oh yeah. That's pretty
03:57cool. Oh that's nice. Check out this chandelier. That is gorgeous. Oh it's a little modern. Oh yeah. But
04:05it still goes with the space right? It does. I'll take that. Wow. I love the way that Lauren has
04:12taken a
04:13century home. She's mixed in some modern elements. She's kept it clean and refined. That's really
04:20really nice. My heart's racing. I spent a lot of time on this room. I'm going to rain on Lauren's
04:26parade here because what is going on with these curtains? Yeah. These are absolutely hideous.
04:33What was she thinking? What was I thinking? I was thinking I didn't want this space to look spooky
04:38or haunted. So I added some modern touches with some color. These floors are incredible. Lauren did
04:46such a great job restoring them. Wow. These are stunning. And the high baseboards? Super nice touch.
04:52All original guys. 100 years old. But thank you. Although I got to be honest this room's not doing
04:57much for me as far as like the haunting situation. Dave's a bit of a one-trick pony over here.
05:02There are a lot of people on these walls that might just be with us right now. Dave those lovely
05:09portraits are my family members. So let's keep it cool okay? And remember Dave the ancestors are watching you.
05:15Lauren is really telling a story through the house layering different pieces from different eras and
05:23it's got a lot of personality. It's my girl. Wow guys. Now this is the kitchen that I am expecting
05:31to see
05:31in a house like this. She went above and beyond by doing a framed cabinet. Oh thanks Amy. You noticed
05:40the details. Check out the super awesome retro fridge. I mean that's amazing. The only problem
05:45this feels like it's a refrigerator for one of my kids. That fridge is amazing. Look how small this
05:50thing is. How are you going to put food for an entire family in this small little fridge?
05:53It's a small refrigerator but we have probably less food waste than all of you combined. Amy in terms
05:59of design this kitchen is amazing but in terms of function I don't think it works. What? Who is this
06:05guy? There's very little counter space. I think if they would have put the refrigerator on that side
06:10they could have continued this countertop straight and now you would have had a big open countertop. I will
06:14respectfully disagree with that. Did you notice this archway? How cool is that? Yeah. Oh look at that. Gorgeous staircase.
06:21So. Okay. Oh. My bedroom. Oh wow guys. Okay. It's like your own personal retreat up here. It is. Definitely
06:32not what I was expecting at all. Mario. This is what you want in a primary suite. You want something
06:39that feels light,
06:40fresh. Do you think it's just too much contrast from the rest of the house to
06:45this? Not at all. I feel like she wanted to live in the old but she didn't want to
06:48sleep in the old. I think they're just trying to hide the haunting. Sorry. Hide the haunting? Definitely
06:57something weird going on in here. I'm not going in there. I'm not going in there. Forget it man. No
07:03way. Stop being a chicken. No. What?
07:11No. I'm not going in. Look at that. Look it's a cute little reading nook. Yeah we're gonna go in
07:16there and it's gonna get locked behind us. I'm going in. You guys are chickens. Go Amy go. This is
07:20awesome. This is so cool. What an amazing use of this space. Thank you. This is where I would run
07:28and hide from my family when I needed a moment to myself. That's exactly where I run and hide from
07:33my family and also apparently all the ghosts. Touche. It's gonna be a tough decision. I really love the way
07:39that Lauren
07:40put her personal touch on every room in the home. Oh. Thank you. I'm feeling a little
07:46queasy about my position in this competition. Hold on to your lunch because
07:51opponent Jessica is here. You're gonna have to stomach some more opinions. Lauren's
07:55house. I love the light fixtures in here. Lauren just has like an impeccable eye.
08:00Thanks Jess. I was here a few weeks ago and there's been
08:04some changes so clearly she's upped her game. Jess knows I updated this. The superpower for
08:11our house I have to keep reminding myself is just the exquisite wood detail. I love Lauren's home
08:16but our home just oozes with original character and charm. That's fair. I think we're missing some
08:22of the paneling but our house feels brighter. Now it's Jessica's turn in the line of fire. My husband
08:29and I and three kids. We live in a 1926 Tudor. We've been here just under three years. This house
08:35is the dream house that we never thought we would have. Everywhere you look in this home there's some
08:41like incredible craftsmanship that you just don't see anymore. It's really unique and hard not to
08:48really fall in love with when you walk in these doors. Judges pick my house please. I am excited about
08:54competing in any competition. I'm like a classic type A. I love to win. I know Lauren and Aaron both
09:01and
09:01I've been in their homes and that is like a high bar. All right I don't have to do. I
09:08think we might be
09:08the underdog and I'm excited to see what the judges think.
09:18Hold on to that excitement Jessica because the judges have entered the chat.
09:22Giddy up. Wow there's the house. Gorgeous. I'm normally a modern guy but I love this old
09:29Venetian look. It makes me feel like I'm just transported 200 years back. It's only 100 years
09:35and it's not Venetian it's Tudor but close. Jessica one, Judge Mario zero. You've got the
09:42Tudor detail there she nailed it. The archway on the outside and then the door all shaped the same
09:47way. It's like you're going into a portal. Portal? Who are these judges? Good question.
09:52Well Dave is just a nosy neighbor and clearly rather judgy.
09:59So excited. Oh wow. I love the wallpaper. How they wrapped it on the ceiling. Look at the old
10:06light guys. Yeah. I love how they've leaned into keeping the character. Yeah the wood molding is
10:12fantastic. This is really capturing the moment of what this home is when it was built. Is it too
10:18much wood because there's literally wood everywhere. I don't think so. Yeah but this is a moment. This
10:23modern guy not a fan of the original features. Not at all shocking. The two-tone crown molding is
10:29interesting. I think the yellow looks like somebody's been smoking here for 200 years. Dave the color of the
10:35wallpaper is yellow and it came with the house. Wow. I feel like I'm being transported. There's a lot
10:42going on in this room. Yeah. I love the feel. I love the wallpaper. I love how they stayed true
10:48with
10:49the fireplace and the built-ins. The stained glass is stunning. The leaded glass windows. Look at the
10:55bench. Read a book there. Have your morning coffee. I love a window bench. The bench is cool. You know
10:59what sticks
10:59out like a sore thumb? This cabinet. I think it's just too big. It blocks the natural light coming in.
11:04Oh my mom's going to be devastated by that comment. That was a housewarming gift from her.
11:08What is in here? Oh wow. Okay. So do you like it now? I like what's inside but I still
11:16don't like
11:16the cabinet. I think it's a great use of space right because when you think about this is a historical
11:21home it wouldn't make sense to do exposed open bar with open shelving. That wouldn't fit this home.
11:29So many details. Different materials. I love how they have all the copper over there.
11:33Even the gray covering the fireplace. Yeah. Jessica's done a beautiful job of styling this to feel
11:41like it would have felt a hundred years ago. Even the way that Jessica has stacked the books and done
11:46the candlesticks. It all just adds to this really cozy cool charm of the space. Team Amy.
11:54I'm excited to see the dining room guys. First impressions. I'm not loving it.
12:13It's different. The dining room table and chairs is leaving a little bit to be desired.
12:21Very basic. The hardest thing in design is really mixing elements from different periods and it fell
12:28short. Amy, I was loving your vibe. Where I really feel the value added here is what she hasn't taken
12:34away. The sconces, she could have removed them. The wall paneling, she could have painted it. But she
12:39chose to preserve what was here and I think that's where the real value added is. I'm excited to see
12:45the
12:46powder room guys. Oh wow. Interesting. Oh wow. I love the tile. I love the wallpaper. Wallpaper's
12:54amazing. Yeah. I could see Mario love that modern balance so we might have won him over with that.
12:59Gorgeous house. Yeah, great living space and entertainment space. I like a lot of it.
13:05Some highs and lows but overall beautiful. After watching the judges tour, I'm feeling pretty insecure.
13:16The first time we saw this house and we saw the stained glass and the wood, I looked at my
13:20husband
13:21and I said, this is the one. I've lived in this home for about four and a half years with
13:27my husband
13:27and my two girls. What we love about this home is all the original features that are still intact. It's
13:33just so special. Running out of time. I really wanted to take part in this competition because I really
13:38wanted to see what others would say about our home, whether it's bad or good. I hope the judges like
13:44pool. Our secret weapon in our home is definitely our attic. We have a bar and kind of a pool
13:50games
13:50room set up there and it's something that's not expected. I do think our house is a winner.
14:01Oh, I think this is it. Yeah, I think so. Now it's opponent Aaron's turn to face the fire.
14:07All right, let's see what the judges have to say. I'm loving the covered
14:11porch with the gorgeous columns. It's very Georgian colonial feel. I got to say, I'm not loving
14:19the dark brown awnings on the windows. Those awnings are also not my favorite part of the house.
14:23Yeah, some things are better left in the past.
14:27Wow. I feel like I'm stepping into a different time, guys. I'm loving the wood paneling. The
14:33staircase really makes a statement when you first walk in. Not loving the
14:39chandelier light thing here. I think that's a really nice light. I am loving the wood beams. It
14:45really adds to the character. The space feels a little bit cluttered. This couch sort of feels a
14:51little bit stranded out here. We've struggled with the layout of the living room. The entrance weight is
14:56not centered to the fireplace. It's a wood burning fireplace and it's beautiful. I love how Aaron
15:01we finish the wood. Yeah, restoring that fireplace was a real labor of love. I'm really curious about
15:07this dining space. Big table. I like that. Kind of like the classic chandelier vibe, too. But it's
15:12still dark, guys. I know that this light is very bright. I just feel like I'm in a dungeon. No,
15:17it's a
15:17cozy space to have family dinners. But when you've got this gorgeous wood paneling on the walls,
15:23you lean into it. This room does not suit LED pot lights. I love the choice of wallpaper. It
15:29complements the wood paneling. It's gorgeous. Thanks, Amy. Amy has great taste. I like the moody
15:36vibe in here. I'm starting to lean a little bit your way. I mean, honestly, with the, uh,
15:39lighting situation. Come to the dark side. That's right. Yeah, the dark side.
15:45Okay. The kitchen. There is a lot going on and all I am looking at is this bizarre
15:53shaped island. I'm not even sure what shape that island is. That's officially known as an odd
16:00shape, Erin. With a cooktop that just feels completely out of place. But it's all open and
16:06you have this big covered sunroom area. I think that is where the value add is in this room. I
16:12think
16:12that Erin missed a huge opportunity. This room could be completely redesigned to have better flow,
16:19better function. Amy, I agree with you. If I could change one thing about this house,
16:22it would be this island. Okay. What's up here? I can't wait to see what they have to say coming
16:28up the stairs. Feels a little creepy. Yeah. What is, wow. I was not expecting to see this at all.
16:35Hey, here we go. Here we go. All right. Yay day. That's the best reaction. This is my office right
16:42here. This is incredible. Honestly, not what you're expecting. Entertainer's dream. You got the dartboard,
16:48you got the pool table, you got the bar. I do have to kind of criticize the bar area. I
16:52think they
16:52could have done something a little bit different. This feels dated, but not in a good way. Dated is
16:58harsh. It's just feeling a little bit 1980s. Should have raised the bar, Erin. That's funny. The home
17:05really threw me for a curve ball. You know, I love the space. I'm just not sure where I rank
17:09it with the
17:10others. I think that went pretty well. As the judges head off to decide, opponent Lauren is here for a
17:17neighborly snoop. Opinions at the ready. Hi, Lauren. It's a really beautiful space. Like a time capsule,
17:26but updated. I think that's a compliment. Oh, wow. This feels vintage in a different way.
17:34Vintage in a good way. Oh, wow. Hello, man cave. Okay. This is so cool. Erin, I had no idea.
17:45Seeing Erin's house is making me feel a little threatened in this competition.
17:52That actually went better than I thought it was going to. Backhanded compliments aside, of course.
17:59All right, judges. Design, function, and added value are your metrics. Time to pick which house
18:05is on top of this block. Okay, guys, it's starting to rain. Let's pop over here and make a decision.
18:10Yeah, good idea. So Lauren's house. Yeah, I think the entryway was fantastic. I thought the
18:17living room space was really nice. It had an elevated, sophisticated feel to it that I really loved.
18:23Where the value add was is that she restored everything just beautifully. To me, the kitchen
18:29was the biggest win of that house. I think the design decisions that she made were beautiful. But
18:35from a function standpoint, they could have expanded the kitchen to have a little bit more counter space.
18:40I was disappointed walking up into the primary suite. It definitely fell short for me. The light
18:46floors, the bright white walls, it's inconsistent with the rest of the house. Okay, let's talk about
18:52Jessica's house. I really love the first impression. You walked in, you had that very nice entrance.
18:57Yeah, Jessica did a good job keeping the character of the home. And the fact that she had everything
19:01beautifully restored, it added the value. I love what Jessica did in that powder room. She really made
19:07a mark on the space. The wallpaper was nice. I think it hits like design and function for me,
19:12and I think it works. And I dug the living room. Yeah, I think she did an amazing job
19:17of really leaning into the design. Minus that table, though, in the dining space,
19:23that's the only thing that I would definitely say needed to go. Let's talk about Erin's place.
19:27I was definitely impressed with the outside of the house. Going into the house, I think that whole
19:32space was fantastic. I did love that Erin took the time to restore a gorgeous staircase. I really love
19:40the beams on the ceiling. The fact that she restored that fireplace was the real value add to me. But
19:46the real
19:46mist was the way that Erin laid out the furniture in that living room. I love the dining room. I
19:51love
19:52the way that Erin utilized a wallpaper treatment that really gave a cozy vibe to that space. For me,
19:58this house got better when we went up. I can't say enough great things about that amazing bar space.
20:05It just felt a little bit 80s basement bar. Okay, so what do we think? Every house had unique features,
20:12and what one house had, the other one didn't. But to me, there is a clear winner. I've made my
20:18decision. I've made my decision. I think I know where I'm going. Let's do it. Let's go do it. Let's
20:22do it.
20:28The verdict is in. Whose house will be crowned top of the block? I'm feeling nervous right now.
20:35I think the judges were a little bit harsh. Dave and Mario have stolen my confidence. I feel pretty
20:41insecure about how I stand in the competition based on the judges' feedback. So I was feeling a bit
20:48nervous, but the judges had really great comments and feedback. I think overall it went well.
20:54The fact that Dave called my house haunted will haunt me. Forever.
21:16Lauren.
21:19You won! Congratulations!
21:25You deserve it. How are you feeling? I'm excited. I'm a little bit shocked though. I know I was up
21:31against some heavy competition. Aaron's house is beautiful, so with Jess's, so that's really,
21:36that's great. Even though it may be haunted. Yeah, exactly. Being top of the block feels pretty amazing.
21:42After all the hard work we've put into our house, feeling pretty good about it. It really goes a long
21:46way when a home gives you a feeling, and I got that feeling as soon as I walked in the
21:51door. I'm like,
21:51you know, this just feels comfortable. That's nice to hear. We put a lot of care and love into our
21:55house. Lauren's house just had so many value adds. She kept the charm. We really got this beautiful mix
22:01of the old and the new, and Lauren executed her home beautifully. I'm feeling disappointed about not
22:08winning. It doesn't change the way that we feel about our house. We love the house and it works really
22:12well for our family. Obviously somewhat disappointed because I love our home and everything about it,
22:18but it's a bummer, but it's also like I'm super happy for the winner. I'm really excited to win. This
22:24is amazing.
22:24It was so fun. I won! Hey, Jess and Aaron, I won. They can probably hear me.
22:38I'll see you next time.
