00:12hey everyone it's me beau i'm back film scene investigation hope you're all doing very well
00:19today i have a new review for you i know you guys like me to review these erotic dramas so
00:26i've got another one here for you today i'm going to be taking a look at the 2003 movie
00:34the dreamers just before we get into this review guys if you haven't already please do consider
00:42subscribing to the channel all the support is greatly appreciated so the dreamers from 2003
00:51was a movie directed by the filmmaker bernardo bertolucci and was based on the novel entitled
00:59the holy innocence by the author gilbert adair the author was also involved with the production
01:08the screenplay to be exact i believe they wrote the initial first draft but over time bertolucci
01:18made several changes as for the plot the story was set in the 1960s and focused on the american
01:27exchange student a guy called matthew who was played by the actor michael pitt now he had arrived in paris
01:36to study the french language but quickly became enamored with french cinema he frequently went to
01:47the movie theater to catch whatever was showing and this is how he eventually met the siblings
01:55theo and isabel played by actors eva green and louis gerald these were two twins that lived with their
02:05parents in this very extravagant apartment in paris they too were fans of cinema and quickly bonded with
02:15matthew all three of them all three of them became very close very quickly they would sit around drink smoke
02:25and discuss cinema even testing their knowledge on one another matthew would soon start living with isabel
02:35theo while their parents were out of town he enjoyed their company so much
02:41yeah it seemed like the you know ideal situation but as time went on matthew started to realize that
02:53there were some strange things going on between the siblings he first noticed how you know touchy
03:01feely they were towards one another you know always hugging and kissing each other and initially matthew didn't
03:10think anything of it but one night after going to the bathroom he ended up looking in on theo and
03:19isabel and found them naked and sleeping on the bed with each other obviously matthew was shocked i mean
03:29rightly so um these guys were brother and sister right what are they doing like yeah yeah i mean he
03:38kind of
03:38freaked out but given he didn't know or have a full grasp you know full understanding of what the situation
03:45was between the two matthew just decided to uh keep quiet i mean i can understand that to a certain
03:53extent
03:54i think it if it was for me in that situation i probably would have confronted the two and been
04:01like what
04:02the hell and you know made a quick exit but um yeah matthew kept quiet he didn't fully understand what
04:09was
04:09going on but he soon found himself getting dragged into these weird sexual encounters what started out as
04:21you know playful innocent fun soon turned into this
04:27sordid sex game amongst all three of them now after watching dreamers it was pretty clear that this
04:36movie was a love letter to the old cinema of the past we saw several clips that were inserted into
04:45the film you know footage of charlie chaplin fred astaire and several others and it i don't know it's
04:53almost like a tribute of sorts with the three main characters theo matthew and isabel they didn't just
05:04love cinema they inhabited it you know into their lives as they frequently you know recited you know
05:13lines of dialogue from several films and then even reenacted scenes the director bernardo bertolucci
05:22obviously infused his love of cinema into the characters that we saw on screen
05:29and you know if you're like me a film buff you know you're into films then i think you would
05:35likely
05:36as well appreciate uh bertolucci's efforts as for the siblings isabel and theo it was obvious that they
05:47were a pair of pompous upper class kids that i don't know lived in their own bubble they had this
05:58forced identity you know fancying themselves as these liberal high art students who actually supported
06:07communism the more i think about it it was like they used this fake persona to
06:17basically shield themselves from the outside world they had created this
06:22fantasy and cinema was a big part of that it was this bohemian liberal
06:31kind of yeah like a fantasy world and once they made friends with matthew and you know they bonded
06:41they then invited matthew into their world now there's no denying that that's what they were doing
06:48they were shielding themselves from the truth but do you ask yourself you know what truth what were they
06:54trying to hide and it became pretty clear to me that what they were hiding was their incestuous
07:04relationship it was like isabel and theo so they just didn't want to face reality the reality that they
07:14were having this sickening sordid relationship and they knew it was wrong and if i mean it's not like
07:23they were proud about it it's not like they wanted to you know tell everyone tell their parents no they
07:30hid it from their parents because they knew it was depraved yet their closeness the bond they had their
07:40i don't know almost like codependency on one another it was too strong to break now what was
07:48very interesting for me was that after watching the dreamers i kind of had this
07:54self-reflective moment where i realized that what theo and isabel were doing living vicariously through
08:05cinema that's kind of what i'm doing now of course i'm doing it for completely different reasons than
08:15those guys i mean those guys were trying to hide an incestuous relationship for me personally i'm just so
08:20sick of the cultural stagnation that we seem to be living in right now the corruption the politics the
08:28wars just um everything right now in the 21st century especially from covid onwards uh it's just
08:38yeah it's very bleak and of course there's always hope in the future and things will change
08:43but as of right now yeah i mean entertainment alone is just yeah and so that's one of the reasons
08:52why
08:53i do this channel you know to celebrate the cinema of the past but also yeah just uh i mean
09:02watching old
09:03films and stuff like that yeah i need that i need that escapism and in a way for different reasons
09:12but
09:13it's the same as theo and isabel i'm doing exactly what those guys are doing thematically the dreamers
09:23explored police brutality for the various clashes that we saw happening on the streets of paris
09:30there can be no denying that this movie painted a pretty bleak picture of french authority
09:40you know making them out to be violent and heavy-handed but what i found interesting was how bertolucci and
09:50the
09:51film cinematographer fabio sincetti were able to make those chaotic scenes feel and look so compelling
10:01and poetic from the fire bombs to the damaged cars on the street you know bertolucci was able to
10:10show beauty even in a very ugly situation and that leads me on nicely to talking about the overall look
10:21of this film as i said the dreamers was set in the 1960s and clearly the filmmakers went out their
10:29way to
10:30create a authentic period piece i was impressed with the attention to detail that i saw on screen
10:41and yeah with all the clothing and the fashion the cars yeah it felt very authentic it can't be denied
10:49and
10:50i think as well because of the efforts the lengths that the filmmakers went to to create that vibe and
10:58atmosphere it did make it very easy for myself to kind of get immersed into the story and yeah that's
11:08one
11:08thing about bertolucci's movies i mean they are controversial but even thinking back to last tango in paris
11:16a movie that i've uh reviewed for this channel that movie yes very graphic at times and you know a
11:24lot of
11:24nudity but paris i mean it looked so authentic and so beautiful and uh yeah clearly bertolucci has a uh
11:37an eye for beauty on screen i also should quickly mention the film's soundtrack that featured some classic
11:47artists like jimmy hendrix the doors and bob dylan having all of that music inserted into the film
11:57it certainly helped create that artsy bohemian student lifestyle that bertolucci was going for so
12:08yeah it worked very well uh great selection of songs now when it comes to the performances
12:14all three main actors i thought had some wonderful chemistry they had this natural rapport with one
12:24another that uh really added a lot of realism to the story with a film like this where your three
12:33main
12:33characters you know are central it is pivotal to make sure you cast the right actors for the right roles
12:42and
12:43uh yeah the casting agent did a fantastic job here i thought uh all three eva green michael pitt and
12:52lewis garao they really kind of bounced off one another and yeah great job individually i thought
13:01actor michael pitt playing the american exchange student matthew a guy who was quite naive
13:09and generally made some bad decisions and trusted the wrong people you know there were times when
13:18when i thought michael pitt's performance did come off a little pretentious but then i had to kind of remind
13:28myself that that's exactly what the intention was you know to have this pretentious character so
13:38yeah he did a great job and you know michael pitt's an actor that i've thought should have become a
13:45bigger star than he is i've loved him in the movie bully i've reviewed that before on this channel
13:52also uh boardwalk empire the first two seasons him playing i believe it's jimmy yeah a great great
14:01character and um yeah he really showed that uh he was quite versatile actor lewis garao did a solid job
14:10playing the manipulative and destructive man theo the brother of isabel a very flawed individual
14:21yeah this guy fancied himself as an intellectual you know but ultimately he had very little life
14:34experience so yeah i kind of found that uh quite ironic yeah ultimately i wasn't really a fan of the
14:44theo character and that's no criticism on lewis gaule he did a you know said a solid job but i
14:52just
14:52thought the character didn't really have any kind of redeeming qualities about him especially later on
15:00when he forced matthew to sleep with his sister i mean what an absolute weirdo when it comes to
15:12eva green she was the standout in this movie it was very clear as soon as she appeared on screen
15:21that
15:23she was the most kind of charismatic and yeah she was she was the star she did a great job
15:30you know
15:31playing a woman who was dangerously seductive and someone that uh unless you like drama someone that
15:40you probably wouldn't want to hook up with now there were tons of new scenes in this movie that's
15:48surprising it is a bertolucci film after all but a lot of that was around eva green you know full
15:57frontal
15:57nudity and yeah i mean when you really break it down and if you've watched enough behind the scenes
16:06what goes on on set yeah it must have been pretty hard to kind of do those scenes fully naked
16:13with tons of you know people camera crews and all that kind of stuff hanging about i understand that
16:22eva green's agents at the time insisted that she shouldn't take this movie due to all the nudity
16:31but i mean ultimately it worked out for eva because this was a great film she was a star as
16:38i said you
16:38know she really stood out from both michael pitt and louis corral and yeah i mean she did a great
16:46job
16:46and so dislikes for the dreamers from 2003 my biggest dislike for the film would have to be
16:56the sex scenes that for me unfortunately just lingered on for way too long now going into this film
17:06i fully expected to see nudity yeah i mean that was no surprise and i haven't actually got an issue
17:16with the level of nudity and all that kind of stuff my issue really is with the just the kind
17:24of
17:24lingering and the actual duration of these sex scenes you know while it was an interesting story
17:29don't get me wrong simulating sex and masturbation all that stuff kind of just dragged on and uh
17:39i just think it could have it could have been trimmed back it didn't really need to go there i
17:45mean
17:46more for me but uh you know i came here for the drama you know for the story not for
17:54the nudity and if
17:55that was the case i'd just you know go watch porn some of those scenes they just went on for
18:01minutes
18:02at a time you know to the point where i was like you know can we get to the next
18:07scene you know we get
18:08it we understand now let's move on and yeah just the duration of that stuff it was just excessive
18:15i can only assume that the filmmakers decided to you know linger and all that stuff to yeah titillate
18:25the audience i really can't think of another reason why they would just linger on that stuff for so long
18:32i will re-watch this movie again at some point but when i do i'll be sure to uh use
18:39the skip button
18:40another dislike i had and this was a minor one was that i thought the movie kind of ended pretty
18:50abruptly now in the last 10 minutes of the film we ended up seeing the parents of isabel and theo
18:59making a surprise return from their travels only to find their children and matthew naked
19:10and what looked like to be the aftermath of some threesome the parents were of course shocked and
19:21didn't really know how to react and for me it was kind of while it was tragic it was also
19:30kind of
19:30funny at the same time the guys were fast asleep they had no idea that their secret was out
19:38and yeah i mean well just when you thought that they might wake up and there would be this
19:44big confrontation the parents just ended up leaving i was kind of confused i was expecting
19:51someone to to wake up or maybe they would wake their own children up and you know confront them
19:56about what the hell was going on but they didn't and quickly a riot broke out outside the apartment
20:04the guys went downstairs and that was pretty much the end of the film now i said this was a
20:10minor spoiler
20:11it didn't didn't ruin it for me but i did think that there was more story to tell and the
20:18fact that
20:19the filmmakers kind of teased this confrontation that didn't actually happen yeah i was a little bit
20:29let down by that and so ratings for the dreamers from 2003 i'm going to be rating this movie
20:38a 5.9 out of 10 the dreamers was a surreal erotic drama from the legendary bernardo bertolucci
20:50that explored some of the kind of worst taboos in society with the incestuous relationship going on
21:02or the secrets and lies this definitely was a very provocative film that had some interesting
21:10aspects to it but not a film that i think holds mass appeal it's clear that bertolucci
21:19wanted to make this thoughtful and compelling film that explored sexuality and politics and cinema
21:32but i do think the story did get sidetracked with some of the absurd sexual moments i do think that
21:42the
21:43director leaned too heavily into all of the sexuality and all the kind of explicit content
21:51and uh yeah i mean ultimately that stuff as i said it did drag on and uh did start to
21:58lose my interest
22:00if you've seen the dreamers then please let me know your thoughts and memories in the comment section below
22:07for you guys out there who haven't seen this one yet it is a recommendation from me i think
22:15if you're a fan of cinema and given if you're watching this and you're a subscriber to my channel
22:21they're absolutely uh yeah you you'll like this movie for sure definitely fans of eva green uh if you
22:30haven't checked this one out yet definitely do because uh i haven't seen you know all of her films but
22:36i would say this would be a career highlight for sure i mean she really committed to the role and
22:41also michael pitt i'm a big fan of that guy i think that uh he said should have had a
22:46bigger career
22:48but yeah he's definitely very good in this film too and well that's all from me today guys i do
22:54hope
22:55you've enjoyed this review of the dreamers from 2003 i'll be back next week of course with yet another cult
