00:12hey guys welcome back to another cult movie review with me Beau here on the film scene
00:18investigation channel hope everyone out there is doing good in today's video I'm going to be
00:25checking out the 1976 John Carpenter film Assault on Precinct 13 before we get into it guys as always
00:37if you haven't already please do consider subscribing to the channel all the support
00:41is greatly appreciated so Assault on Precinct 13 from 1976 was written and directed by the
00:52legendary John Carpenter in his second feature film starring a relatively unknown cast this was a
01:02low-budget production with Carpenter having full creative control now John Carpenter is a director
01:11who I'm very familiar with having seen many of his films over the years with Assault on Precinct 13
01:18being one of my favorites I mean when I was a kid first getting into films I was a big
01:26fan of the
01:27horror genre so yeah I saw a lot of John Carpenter material through my love of the Halloween franchise
01:36I ended up exploring many of John Carpenter's films including They Live and The Fog he's a great
01:45director but as time has gone on I feel his work has been rather poor I mean I don't want
01:55to
01:55criticize Carpenter too much because you know he's a legend in the game but yeah I just can't lie and
02:05say
02:05that his later work was anything decent I still rate Carpenter quite highly as a director but I just
02:15prefer his early material it was far superior so my first exposure to Assault on Precinct 13
02:26was actually when I saw a John Carpenter documentary on TV there were clips of the film inserted into the
02:36documentary itself and yeah I remember seeing the the footage and it definitely caught my eye
02:42soon after that I ended up purchasing the DVD and yeah I've been a fan ever since
02:51as for the movie itself we followed the officer Ethan Bishop who was played by actor Austin Stoker
02:59who was patrolling the increasingly violent streets of Los Angeles at the start of the film Bishop was
03:08tasked to supervise an old decommissioned police precinct during its last remaining hours before its closure
03:15I mean yeah Bishop wasn't exactly thrilled with the idea of manning an empty police precinct but he had
03:25no other choice when he arrived Bishop met the remaining staff who were busy packing up boxes
03:33while it's not necessarily a glamorous job it wasn't exactly a challenge for Bishop leading him to believe
03:42that he was in for a very uneventful night yet soon after Bishop's arrival things went awry when a police
03:52bus
03:53carrying some prisoners pulled up outside the precinct one of the prisoners on the bus was sick
04:00and the officers needed to use the precinct's holding cells while they called a doctor this ship was
04:08far from pleased and yeah who could blame him I mean the precinct wasn't exactly in any fit state to
04:17hold sick prisoners
04:18but Bishop had no other choice and went along with the request
04:24dealing with sick prisoners was the least of Bishop's worries as he was soon confronted with a traumatized man
04:33called Mr. Lawson who rushed in to the precinct
04:37Mr. Lawson who was played by actor Martin West collapsed at the front desk
04:43needed immediate attention
04:45so panicked and in a state of shock
04:49Lawson was unable to articulate he was unable to explain the situation
04:57soon the lights were shut off and so began the attack by the street thugs outside
05:04so at the start of the film we saw a bunch of heavily armed LAPD officers
05:11ambush a group of notorious gangsters
05:14this group were a bunch of dangerous criminals who had recently stolen a large number of rifles
05:22so the LAPD weren't taking them lightly
05:26the deadly shootout that we saw so briefly at the start of the film
05:31only led to more problems for the police
05:34as rival gangs decided to come under one umbrella
05:39and vowed to take revenge on the citizens and the authorities
05:42I mean there was no messing around with these guys
05:45they made a blood pact
05:47together they were going to cause chaos for everyone
05:52the remainder of the film then focused on the gang's vicious attack
05:57and Bishop's attempts to save everyone
06:01bullets were flying everywhere
06:04windows had been blown out
06:06I mean things got so bad
06:08that Bishop needed the help of the prisoners
06:12who were inside the holding cells
06:14while it was a pretty drastic measure to take
06:17I mean the shooting was relentless
06:20and yeah I mean there was just no way that Bishop could cope by himself
06:25it was a huge gamble
06:27but it was a risk that Bishop had to take
06:32so he, prisoners Wilson and Wells
06:36and the office secretary
06:37together killed and wounded
06:39dozens of gang members
06:41who attempted to force their way into the building
06:44while they were initially successful
06:48the gang members just kept coming
06:50I mean it was like a conveyor belt of street trash
06:56just showing up ready to kill
06:59with little ammunition left
07:01the group decided to retreat into the downstairs basement
07:05where the prisoner Wilson and the officer Bishop
07:09did their best to force the gang members back
07:12now I have to say that
07:14this was a very ambitious project
07:18for Carpenter to undertake
07:20given he had so little experience at the time
07:24with directing large productions
07:26I was impressed with the film's overall look
07:29I mean there's no denying that this
07:32is a very well made movie
07:34the cinematography was top notch
07:37and we also saw some very innovative visuals
07:42used in the film
07:43for example
07:44the POV shot
07:46looking down the gun viewfinder
07:49you had these gang members
07:51driving around with their guns
07:54stuck out of the window
07:55scoping out the citizens that walked by
07:58I mean these were innocent people
08:01and they had no idea that they were
08:04literally milliseconds away from being killed
08:08it was a great idea from Carpenter
08:11and I think you know
08:13we kind of take that shot for granted now
08:16that's a shot that we would kind of expect to see
08:20but for its time
08:23it was yeah very impressive
08:25I also want to take a moment
08:28and mention the film's brilliant soundtrack
08:31which was also produced by John Carpenter
08:34while Carpenter is and should be celebrated
08:40for his achievements in film
08:42we should also praise him for his great work as a composer
08:48over the years Carpenter as a composer
08:52has delivered some solid material for his films
08:56and Assault on Precinct 13 was no different
09:00I mean how about the film's main title
09:03it was such a simple yet memorable piece of music
09:09that really heightened the film's mood and atmosphere
09:13it was like this electronic bass or something like that
09:18the rest of the soundtrack was a combination of synthesizers
09:28and electronic drums
09:30which really set it apart from other soundtracks at the time
09:36it was a really great soundtrack
09:39and if you're interested in John Carpenter's music
09:44I would definitely recommend it
09:46the only thing that surprised me
09:48was that the soundtrack wasn't officially released until 2003
09:55which was I believe 27 years after the film was released in theatres
10:03in terms of performances
10:05I thought the actor Austin Stoker did a wonderful job in his role as Ethan Bishop
10:12now I'm not too familiar with Stoker's work as an actor
10:17but regardless he delivered a strong and compelling performance
10:22I also want to take a quick moment
10:26just to acknowledge how the Bishop character
10:31was a positive role model for black men
10:35Bishop was a strong-minded and caring officer
10:41who just wanted to preserve law and order
10:45I loved the Bishop character
10:48and I thought it was a good thing
10:50portraying such a positive image to black audiences
10:55having re-watched this movie again recently
10:58it just made me think about Hollywood
11:00and how Hollywood has kind of eroded this positive image over the years
11:08and replaced it with ghettoism
11:12nowadays some people out there
11:15especially people with the woke mindset
11:19would view the character Bishop as an Uncle Tom
11:24when in reality he was just a man with common sense and integrity
11:29I miss these types of role models
11:32and I wish we would see more Ethan Bishop type characters in cinema today
11:40I thought actress Laurie Zimmerman was a standout in her role as the secretary
11:47she too is an actress who I'm not too familiar with
11:52but I was impressed with her delivery in the film
11:56the secretary Lee was a woman who could definitely handle herself
12:02and she certainly played her part in taking out the bad guys
12:08she wasn't this damsel in distress
12:12and I'm glad she wasn't
12:15because I think that would have kind of ruined the group's dynamic
12:20and having looked at Zimmerman's profile
12:24I am surprised that she never went on to have a more prolific film career
12:33I say that because she was really good in the film
12:38and I'm just surprised that I haven't seen her in other films
12:44in Seoul dislikes for Assault on Precinct 13 from 1976
12:50my biggest dislike for the film would have to be
12:55Mr Lawson's actions after his daughter was killed
13:00so a bit of context here
13:02Mr Lawson and his daughter were travelling at the start of the film
13:08and they got lost and stopped for directions
13:11the father and daughter travelled to the wrong part of town
13:17where the street gangs roamed freely
13:20anyways the daughter Kathy
13:23who was played by actress Kim Richards
13:26ended up getting shot by one of the gang members
13:29this was undoubtedly the most shocking moment within the film
13:36seeing an innocent child gunned down like that
13:40I mean the scene itself actually caused a lot of controversy
13:45when the film was released
13:46and I believe was heavily edited on some of VHS releases
13:51while it was indeed a disturbing sight to see
13:56I personally didn't have any issues with the child dying
14:01as it showed how savage the street gang were
14:05my issue was with the aftermath
14:08once Lawson had discovered his daughter had died
14:13Lawson quite rightly broke down in tears
14:17at the sight of his daughter's lifeless body
14:20but he quickly grabbed a gun
14:24and chased after the street gang responsible
14:27I expected Lawson to remain in a state of shock
14:34but he soon went all gung-ho
14:37and decided to avenge his daughter's death
14:41you know in some ways
14:44yeah I can kind of understand the reaction
14:49but I just felt it all happened way too fast
14:55the rapid turn from sadness to anger
15:01felt a little too forced and unrealistic
15:07I also have to question
15:09why Lawson left his daughter's body at the side of the road
15:14now a lot of you guys watching this
15:16may be thinking this is such a non-point
15:19and you know hey that's fair enough
15:20but for me it's always bugged me
15:23that Lawson could just drive off
15:26leaving his daughter behind
15:28I thought it was a bit overdramatic
15:31seeing this guy, this dad
15:34suddenly grab a gun
15:37and chase after the street scum responsible
15:40but you know I can look past that
15:43but the disregard to Kathy's body
15:48just was overkill for me
15:51I don't know
15:52I've never been in a situation like that
15:54nor would I want to be
15:56but for me it would have made more sense
16:00if Lawson had picked up his daughter's body
16:04and put it in the car with him
16:06before driving off to chase the bad guys
16:09and so ratings for Assault on Precinct 13
16:13from 1976
16:16my rating will be a solid 5.5 out of 10
16:23I found Assault on Precinct 13
16:26to be a very well made
16:28and intense crime drama
16:31that really showcased Carpenter's ability
16:35as the filmmaker
16:37when you break it down
16:39and consider the budget
16:43that Carpenter was working with
16:45I mean Assault on Precinct 13
16:48is actually a very impressive effort
16:52by Carpenter
16:53you know the director proved that
16:56you didn't need a lot of money
16:58to deliver a good movie
17:01and as much as I personally love
17:05many of John Carpenter's horror films
17:08I do wish that he had made more
17:12gritty crime dramas
17:14like Assault on Precinct 13
17:16with that said
17:18I guess you could kind of argue
17:20that this movie still had a horror element to it
17:25but instead of a singular figure
17:29like a Michael Myers
17:31there was a much more terrifying prospect
17:34of a non-stop horde of faceless street thugs
17:39ready to kill everyone in sight
17:41if you're a fan of John Carpenter's work
17:45and you haven't seen this one yet
17:48definitely make time
17:51because it is well worth the watch
17:54and for those who have seen it
17:56I'd recommend going back
17:57and revisiting this one
17:59because yeah
18:01it is a real cult classic
18:03that's worth your time
18:05this is one of his strongest films
18:07I prefer this over films like The Fog
18:11Big Trouble in Little China
18:13Prince of Darkness
18:14they're all good films
18:16but Assault on Precinct 13
18:18is far superior to that
18:19and well
18:20that's all from me today guys
18:22I hope you've enjoyed this review
18:24of Assault on Precinct 13
18:26from 1976
