00:00This controller looks slightly different from what I'd expected from Sony, but it plays and feels
00:04awesome. But there's two features on here that are just super special. Welcome to Mojo Plays
00:09and the PS5 is only a couple years old. If I discover that my PS2 had a slot for a
00:13hard drive
00:13last year, who knows what's left to learn about the fifth Sony home console. These are 25 things
00:18you didn't know about the PS5. Let's go. Before we continue, we publish content all week long,
00:24so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified of our latest videos.
00:30The Secret Orientation. The PlayStation 5 has a bit of a weird design quirk. It kind of feels like a
00:37spaceship, but the fact that you need a stand just to keep it stable feels like an odd choice. Most
00:41consoles don't ask for that. Naturally, people started experimenting, and it turns out there's
00:46a way to position it without the stand, just not one Sony officially supports. By laying it horizontally
00:51in reverse, with the disk drive slot pointed upward, you can actually balance it just fine.
00:56In that sense, it almost feels like a better setup. The only catch is that if you're using discs,
01:01you'll need to insert them upside down, which is easy to forget. There was even a moment when Sony
01:05accidentally showed this orientation in an ad before quickly pulling it, which makes you wonder
01:09if it works this well, why wasn't it ever made official? I'm kidding, we know why it was money.
01:17All right, so you want to look at the bottom of the PS5.
01:20Universal settings.
01:24Every time you start a new game, you're usually hit with the same setup questions.
01:28Difficulties, subtitles, brightness, and if you're my girlfriend, inverting Y and X. Don't ask.
01:34Thankfully, the PlayStation 5 has a way to skip a lot of that. If you head into settings and check
01:39out
01:39saved data and game app settings, you can set up presets so the console automatically picks things
01:44up like difficulty, performance mode, resolution, subtitles, audio, and even camera preferences for
01:49you. Thanks PlayStation, I love you. Easy to open up. It's got some serious stormtrooper vibes going on,
01:58and what's that on the grip? The underside of each grip has tiny X's, circles, squares,
02:04and triangles printed all over it. There's a surprising amount of design work that goes into
02:08consoles and controllers. They're basically functional pieces of art. At least I think so.
02:14Sony tends to stick with clean, uniform designs, but players love putting their own spin on things
02:18with custom mods. Normally, that kind of tinkering can be a hassle. Tiny screwdrivers and magnifying
02:24glass. The DualSense controller makes things a bit easier. The plastic panel on the back can be snapped
02:29off without needing any serious tools, giving you quick access to the inside if you want to take a
02:35look or make adjustments. Seriously, go look at your controller. Not a hole to be seen.
02:39Vibration motor hardware. As usual, we'll tackle the battery first.
02:43Control center helps you. Press the PS button on your controller to open the control center.
02:48Games have gotten way more complicated over the years, so it's basically inevitable you'll hit a
02:52wall at some point. Normally, that means jumping online, scrolling through Reddit threads,
02:56or watching YouTube tutorials, but the PlayStation 5 actually has a built-in way to
02:59help with that. If you've got PlayStation Plus and the game supports it, you can pull up the control
03:04center with the PlayStation button and get hints or walkthrough style help without ever leaving the
03:09game. It's all provided directly by the developers too, which makes it feel as reliable as it could
03:14possibly get. Screen sharing. As consoles get more powerful, they're not just improving graphics,
03:27they're improving socially. The PlayStation 5 has a feature that lets you share your screen with
03:32friends in your party, which is cool on its own, but it goes a step further. You can watch your
03:37friend's gameplay while playing your own using picture-in-picture. It's like having a second
03:42perspective running at the same time. Me and my buddy used to set up two TVs and play our own
03:46games for
03:46fun. Now we don't have to. We still will. 3D audio without a headset.
03:57When Sony was promoting the PlayStation 5, 3D audio was a big deal, marketed as this next level
04:04immersion that puts you right in the middle of the action. A lot of that advertising also pushes
04:09the Pulse 3D wireless headset, making it seem like you needed it to get the full experience.
04:14But here's the thing, you don't. The PS5 already has 3D audio built in and you can access it straight
04:21from the settings. The headset might be the easiest way to enjoy it, but you can set it up with
04:25regular
04:26TV speakers too. Just takes a little bit more effort, like running a console's acoustic measurement
04:30tool to tune everything properly. If you move a chair in your house, you will have to redo it.
04:35Sorry. 3D audio tech provides a convincing representation of sounds behind, above,
04:41and below you. Game Boost
04:49One of the best things about the PlayStation 5 is how it handles older games. Most of the PS4 library
04:55works through backwards compatibility, and while a lot of titles run as they did before,
04:59with faster loading thanks to the SSD, some get a noticeable upgrade through something called
05:04Game Boost. This feature lets certain games run at a higher frame rate, and even improved
05:09resolutions, making them feel smoother and more modern. It's not automatic across the board,
05:13as developers need to patch their games to support it. Still cool though.
05:22Single Button Mute
05:27This one I just learned, and it actually helps a lot. Remote controls always seem to vanish the
05:32second you actually need them. Usually buried in the couch or hiding somewhere, that makes no sense.
05:37Luckily, the PlayStation 5 has you covered without needing to grab anything else. The DualSense has a
05:42built-in mic and speaker, and that little button under the PS button does more than you might think.
05:48Tap it, and you mute your mic. Hold it down though, and it mutes everything. All audio from the console.
05:54A trick that you'll find yourself using more than you'd think.
06:01Plug and play
06:01I bought this back in February of 2018, and yes, I can confirm that it does work with the PS5,
06:08along with the PS4. The PlayStation 5 might be more powerful than the PS4, but its storage can fill up
06:13way faster than you'd expect, especially with how big modern games are. You can move PS5 games onto an
06:18external drive to free up space, but you won't be able to actually play them from there, which kind of
06:23limits the usefulness. Where external drives really shine, is with PS4 games. Unlike PS5 titles,
06:29they run perfectly fine straight from the external hard drive, so you can keep your older library there
06:34and save your SSD for newer games. You can even set the drive as the automatic download location
06:39for PS4 games. Pretty clever.
06:41PS5, and you can download and save your game applications to this hard drive.
06:45Mouse and keyboard
06:46Today I'm going to show you how to connect your mouse and keyboard to a PS5.
06:49This was pushed in the early days, but kind of died off after release, with most players who
06:53didn't follow initial marketing not even realising it's possible. Those extra ports on the back of
06:58the PS5 can actually do a lot more than you think. You can plug in a keyboard and mouse and
07:02use them
07:03just like you would on a PC, which instantly changes how certain games feel. Even if the ports were
07:08already taken, Bluetooth works too, so you're not stuck. It might sound unnecessary since the Dual
07:13Sense does the job for most games, but some titles just play a little better this way.
07:17Even though the PS5 has native keyboard and mouse support,
07:20it's still up to the game developers discretion if they allow it.
07:23PS5 Activities
07:24Playing solo is a great way to immerse yourself in rich, interactive stories and worlds.
07:30If you're over the whole process of loading into Grand Theft Auto 5,
07:33waiting to get into GTA Online, and then finally joining a friend just to play what you actually
07:36wanted, yeah, the PlayStation 5 has a fix for that. It's called Activities, and it basically cuts
07:41out all that wasted time. Instead of digging through menus, you can jump straight into specific
07:46parts of a game right from the home screen. As lead PlayStation Architect Mark Kearney explained,
07:52multiplayer games can show you live activities you can instantly join,
07:55while single player games can suggest missions or rewards you can dive into immediately.
08:00Cards for any current or in progress activities may display your progress,
08:04and an estimate of how much longer they should take to complete.
08:07Ergonomics
08:08The PlayStation 5, this is a big and very powerful console.
08:11Controller designs can change a lot from one generation to the next, but Sony has mostly
08:16stuck to a familiar formula across its consoles. Instead of reinventing everything, they've refined
08:22the design over time, and the DualSense is the clearest example of that approach. It's slightly bigger
08:27and more rounded than the DualShock 4, which makes it sit more comfortably in your hands during longer
08:32sessions. Small tweaks, like shifting the light bar and adjusting the shape, might not seem huge at
08:37first, but they do add up. The controller was actually designed to be completely ergonomic,
08:42which is probably why you feel far less hand cramps during marathon sessions.
08:45It's different, right? Depending on the material. And if this was glass,
08:47it would feel a certain way. And if this was wood, it would also feel a different way.
08:50Phone control
08:55The PS5 isn't exactly something you can take with you. Trust me, I've tried. But that doesn't mean you're
09:00locked out of managing it when you're away. That's where the PlayStation app comes in. It connects
09:05straight to your console and lets you handle a bunch of things remotely, even if you've got
09:09multiple systems at home. I know this sounds like an ad, but it's not. I just think enough people are
09:14not utilizing this goddamn tool. From the beach, I was able to delete games from my PS5 to make enough
09:19room for Crimson Desert, which I also bought and downloaded from the beach. I hate the beach, man.
09:35The PS5 has a little nice feature to keep you on track when gaming. When you open the control center
09:41during a single player game, you'll often see activity cards pop up, pointing you towards
09:45unfinished missions, side content, or even progress towards trophies you haven't unlocked yet. Some of
09:51them even estimate how long a task might take based on how you play, which is surprisingly handy.
09:57There's also challenges, which let you compete with friends or even global players, tracking things
10:01like speedruns and scores, so you can see exactly how you stack up.
10:10Most successful launch
10:16The PS5 actually had a pretty surprising record. Even with all the supply shortages early on,
10:22PlayStation 5 still exploded in popularity. Demand was through the roof and it managed to sell 7.8
10:28million units in its first year alone. That made it the most successful launch period for any PlayStation
10:34console ever, which is pretty wild considering how hard it was to actually find one at the time.
10:38It just goes to show how strong the hype was. People were willing to wait, refresh pages,
10:44and fight through stock drops just to get their hands on it. I, however, had a best mate who worked
10:48at JB Hi-Fi and I can say this now since he doesn't anymore, I definitely took someone else's pre
10:52-order.
10:53My bad.
10:56Probably won't be my last time buying one anyway.
10:59Add an SSD to your PS5.
11:01I'm here with WD Black and today we're going to install the new SNA 50p NVMe SSD for the PS5.
11:06This entry is pretty self-explanatory, but let's talk about it anyway.
11:10Out of the box, you're working with around 667 gigabytes of usable space on your PS5.
11:15And with some titles pushing past 100 gigs, that disappears pretty fast.
11:19You can move games onto an external drive to clear room, but the PS5 games won't run from there,
11:23like I said, and you'll need a copy to get them back every time, which gets old quickly. It's just,
11:27it's a bit of a mess. That's why adding an external SSD is the smarter long-term move.
11:31It gives you a lot more space to work with and keeps everything running at full speed.
11:36...design that is optimized for the airflow of the PS5.
11:39Listen to music while you play.
11:41So what you have to do is you just need to download the Spotify and log in.
11:44A lot of people don't realize this, but the PS5 lets you play your own music while gaming,
11:49which is a game changer if you're sick of hearing the same soundtrack on loop.
11:53Whether you use Spotify or Apple Music, it's super easy to set up.
11:56Just download the app from the PlayStation Store, log in, and you are ready.
12:00Once you're in a game, hit the PS button to open the control center,
12:02jump into the music section, and start playing whatever the hell you want.
12:05With games like Elden Ring and Medieval Dynasty,
12:07I've zoned out for hundreds of hours listening to podcasts and playing.
12:16Stream PS5 games to your mobile.
12:26The PlayStation 5 has a breakthrough feature called Remote Play that basically lets you
12:30take your games off the TV and onto your phone, tablet, or PC. So if someone's hogging the screen,
12:35you're not stuck waiting around. You can keep playing from another device as long as your
12:39internet's solid. To get started, you'll need the PS Remote Play app, which you can grab from
12:43your device's app store. After that, just enable Remote Play in your PS5 settings, follow the setup
12:48steps, and you're good to go. There's even a dedicated handheld specifically for this called the
12:53PlayStation Portal. Sony wants you to clean.
13:05If you just picked up a new PS5, you won't need to worry about this straight away, but it's something
13:10worth keeping in mind down the line. Dust buildup has always been a pain with consoles, usually because
13:15cleaning them properly meant taking the whole thing apart. Thankfully, that's not really the case here.
13:19Sony actually designed the PlayStation 5 to be easier to maintain, which they showed off in an
13:25early teardown before launch. To clean it, you just pop off the side panels and use a vacuum
13:29on the built-in dust catchers. That's it. No deep disassembly needed.
13:38Change your PS5 covers.
13:40Step 2. Place your PS5 on a flat surface with a protective covering and take off the base.
13:45Speaking of, some people love the bold, futuristic look of the PS5, while others think it's a bit
13:50over the top compared to the simpler PS4 design. Either way, it stands out. The good news is you're
13:55not stuck with the default white finish. You can actually swap out the side covers pretty easily,
14:00no tools required. Just pop them off and replace them with something new. Sony even sells official
14:06covers in different colors, so you can give your console a fresh new look without messing around
14:10with custom mods or complicated installs.
14:20Universal Button Controls
14:31Consoles might look the same no matter where you buy them, but games haven't always played
14:35by the same rules across regions. In the past, things like region locking and different control
14:39schemes made it a bit messy depending on where you were playing. The DualSense actually smooths one of
14:44those issues out. Traditionally, the cross and circle buttons swapped roles depending on the region.
14:49Cross was confirmed in the west, while Japan used circle instead. We saw this with PlayStation
14:54classics like Metal Gear Solid. It wasn't a huge deal, but it could definitely throw people off.
14:59Now things are standardized, giving players a consistent setup no matter where they are.
15:04It's a small change, but one that unifies us as gamers.
15:16One thing I was really curious about was exactly how good of quality the microphone would be
15:22on the underside of the controller. One of these standout extras on the DualSense is the built-in
15:27microphone, which means you can jump into voice chat without needing a headset. It's convenient,
15:31you can send voice messages or talk to friends straight away without any extra gear. Unfortunately,
15:37it's turned on by default, which means it's very easy to forget it's live and accidentally broadcast
15:42whatever's going on around you. To avoid that awkward moment, it's a good idea to change the
15:45default setting, which you know from our previous entry on it. Good work.
15:49We're going to switch to that. This is what my voice normally sounds like with post-processing
15:54and different things like that. This is something that you guys are used to hearing within these videos.
15:58And now again, we're right back to the controller. Customize your create button.
16:03We are going to have a look at the PlayStation 5 in-game recording feature and how it works,
16:08as well as taking screenshots and broadcasting. If you've picked up a DualSense, you've probably
16:12noticed the create button sitting where the old share button used to be. Don't worry though,
16:16it's basically an upgraded version of the same idea. It still lets you grab screenshots or record clips,
16:21but with a bit more flexibility. By default, holding it down takes a screenshot,
16:25while double tapping saves a recent gameplay clip. It's quick and easy once you get used to it.
16:30The cool part is you're not locked into those controls. On the PlayStation 5 you can head into
16:35the settings and remap how the button works to suit your style. The PS5 continues to be an incredibly
16:40customizable experience. Description, tags, and select what privacy you want.
16:45Remap your buttons. So if I go to the home screen on my PlayStation 5 right now,
16:50I want to go up to settings and select this. Most games these days get the controls right,
16:54but every now and again you'll run into something that just doesn't feel comfortable. Or you might
16:58just prefer your own setup. That's where the DualSense really shines. You can head into the
17:02settings and fully remap your buttons. Whether that means swapping the analog sticks or flipping inputs
17:07like cross and circle because you're tired of Metal Gear Solid. Sorry to rail on MGS so much,
17:12Kojima. Send me a message. I want to be in Death Stranding 3, please.
17:19Use your old DualShock 4. Back, left, right, jump. Switching over to the PlayStation 5 doesn't mean
17:27you have to ditch your old habits completely. If you were used to the feel of the DualShock 4,
17:31you could actually keep using it, but with a small catch. It costs $800. No, it just won't work with
17:38the PS5 games, but it's perfectly fine for playing backwards compatible PS4 titles. So if you've got a big
17:43library or just prefer that older grip, you're covered, but also grow up. It's a hip-hop world.
17:48Keep up or get out of the way. Showed up on my PS5. There it is. DualShock 4 wireless controller.
17:54So just go to it. Did you enjoy this video? Check out these other clips from Mojo Plays.
