06:40ุบูุฑ still goes out to do her work at centro tyrone guzman the oldest latin community hub in minnesota
06:47they're not even coming here because it's not worth it they can be kidnapped and taken away so
06:52the risk is not worth it and that is probably what's going on like they know that our community
06:57thrives being community uh and right now they have created isolation xavier vasquez runs centro
07:05he is a u.s citizen but he says that no longer feels like protection it doesn't matter at this
07:11point they have deported citizens residents centro is home to the only spanish language montessori
07:17preschool in minnesota so here we're actually entering the school can't help but notice there's
07:24not very many kids here right now no there's not even a kid no no one so this is the
07:30environment
07:31oh wow that's lovely but it has been closed for nearly three months when it reopens staff
07:37don't know how many children will come back it's fear because families are too afraid
07:43to risk to come to school they're not even going to work fear was caused by racism was
07:49caused by targeting us it was caused by racial profiling that's the truth federal officials
07:55deny their officers use racial profiling saying stops are based on reasonable suspicion but
08:00many latin parents have been too scared to send their children to school with some
08:05reporting attendance rates below fifty percent they are targeting us they are taking hard-working
08:11people that came here looking for opportunities to give a better future to their families just
08:15like we did they are targeting children they are taking children that is scary and that is
08:21devastating that's not what we came here for the department of homeland security denies
08:29that ice target schools or children but in the first nine months of president trump's second
08:34term more than 3 800 children were booked into detention by early february immigration and customs
08:42enforcement was holding almost 70 000 people in detention around three quarters had no criminal
08:47conviction on record it is very hard to believe yeah that we're in america xavier is taking me to
08:55meet one of centro students helen and her mother marta tomorrow they will self-deport to ecuador to
09:01hopefully reunite with helen's father who is in detention and facing deportation the father was
09:07uh taken a little bit over two months ago and then after that they were evicted from their apartment and
09:15one of our staff members received them in their house and then the dad is going to be deported now
09:22since moving in with one of centro's staff even a car pulling up outside can feel like a threat
09:31yeah just so you know we're here outside so you don't get scared that's us okay
09:38well inside i meet marta she's been sheltering here for four weeks with five-year-old helen
09:46have you left the house much no hemos podido salir porque yo soy la รบnica que se quedo cargo de
09:51los
09:51niรฑos y si me pasaba algo a mรญ que iba a pasar de ellos entonces era el temor de salir
09:57entonces hemos
09:58permanecido pencerrados two years ago the family fled ecuador after violence spread through their
10:03neighborhood they flew to el salvador then walks north to texas in search of a safer future but with
10:10helen's father now being held in detention more than 500 miles away marta has decided she must return
10:44are you looking forward to seeing your dad
10:47yeah
10:49marta is weighing an impossible choice for heaven stay in the united states without her father
10:55or return to the violence they once fled so the family can be together again
11:01for some families once you're wrapped up in this system there's no easy choices it's just picking
11:07the least worst option and they're picking the least worst option for them
11:13and they've got no idea how it's going to work out
11:22for many families even getting food has become a problem
11:25this is where the magic start i've come to manor market where moises and a huge team of volunteers
11:32are packing groceries for community groups across minnesota to deliver to families staying indoors
11:37every day looks like this in the morning by the end of the day this is empty that's clean and
11:45ready for the next day
11:47they are now helping almost six and a half thousand sheltering families a week
11:53four months ago how many families were you four months ago it was around 2500 every week
11:59so you've doubled more than doubled do you see a time anytime soon when demand for your services
12:05goes down our operation is never going down it's going up and up and we never say no to the
12:14necessity
12:16back at centro sandra and her eldest daughter elsa are volunteering six days a week helping
12:22distribute surprise from manor market to families in need it's really hard to see my community going
12:29through this but what they are seeing is affecting them deeply it's hurting a lot of people and families
12:37and it just feels disappointing because it feels like families are falling apart are there children who
12:43are missing from your school um yeah some people are homeschooling because what's happening
12:50and they're scared to go out are you not scared of being stopped or targeted at all by price i
12:58am great
13:00but my need to be there for my community is bigger than my friends yes and are you a u
13:08.s. citizen yes
13:09thank god i am a u.s. citizen but i think at this moment it doesn't matter
13:17the color of my skin speaks louder than my citizenship
13:22most federal agents are said to have left the city but few people here believe the danger has passed
13:27food drop-offs still have to be carefully timed with families too frightened to step outside once
13:33everything's by the door then she'll open the door for us and then we'll put things in as fast
13:38as we can so that that door is closed as soon as possible i'm gonna take this one and the
13:43diapers
13:43and i think we should be good okay centro say that ice agents have previously stopped volunteers while
13:50out on delivery sandra is nervous but tonight the coast is clear yes i'm here afuera
14:00the family hiding in this basement haven't left it for two months since the father was
14:05arrested by ice after picking up their children from kindergarten he's now being held in iowa
14:10around 250 miles away did your husband have legal status here we had a work permit and social security
14:26their three children were in the car when he was snatched and watched him being taken away
14:31what impact is it having on you and your kids
14:34entonces pienso que la forma tambiรฉn como รฉl fue llevado cruelmente castigado porque se resistiรณ
14:42que se lleven porque รฉl estaba con los niรฑos is that your daughter does she know where her dad is
14:48sรญ porque porque porque ella estaba ese dรญa y estaba gritando que no se lo lleven y
15:00ella estaba gritando que no se lo lleven y asรญ ella viviรณ todo y dice que si le puedes mandar
15:08un mensaje a tu papรก
15:29estรก enojada asรญ como ahorita sรญ porque le extraรฑo a mi papรก porque nadie comprende porque no entienden que
15:37porque nadie porque no vuelve give me one second sondra has seen many families go through this
15:46it's taking a toll on her too you okay i'm okay yes my heart
15:53needs to be out here i am fearful to be out here but they need me yeah yes you really
16:01do
16:06so
16:19the level of desperation is almost beyond comprehension
16:24and it's heartbreaking because they're talking about what their children are experiencing their
16:29parents that feel like they are unable to protect their children which is the
16:36it's all parents are meant to do
16:38and what you know
16:41say savior is gathering children together to throw a goodbye party for helen
16:45who's self-deporting with her mother marta tomorrow
16:53other families have trusted him to collect their children and take them to school
16:57he keeps a copy of his u.s passport with him at all times but even this short school run
17:02now feels exposed
17:04why are we having to pick up these other kids they're not able to to get out like their families
17:12are not able to get out
17:14safely because they become targets as soon as they get out
17:19for xavier this feels like a covert operation but for the children it's just a chance to finally see their
17:25friends again
17:25american

19:54ููุดู rates of up to 50%
19:56for children with some of the most
19:58serious physical conditions.
20:00They're not turning up for appointments across
20:02the board, right, because they're not
20:04sure what's going to happen. And that could be anything from
20:06asthma to
20:08cancer treatments. People are not
20:10turning up for cancer appointments. It's incredibly
20:11concerning because then when we see people that
20:14are showing up, actually we're having more
20:15admissions to the hospital because
20:18people are just coming in in sicker states.
20:20If the ice surge
20:22actually ended tomorrow,
20:24does the problem end just there?
20:26I wish that was
20:28so simple. It's going to take a long time
20:30for them to fully heal.
20:32But they will always have that sense
20:34of what happened inside them.
20:37For some
20:38families, the damage will last long
20:40after the surge. Today,
20:42Helen and Marta are returning to
20:44Ecuador, joining over 600,000
20:47others who have self-deported
20:48since October 2025.
20:50How are you feeling about this?
20:52I don't know.
20:53This is...
20:55This situation has
20:56a lot of mixed feelings, you know.
20:58Knowing that I might see Helen
20:59for the last time.
21:01I'm meeting Xavier one last time
21:03as he drives them to the airport.
21:05Just the last one, Paul.
21:06Let's mind you one more.
21:14Now, they must say goodbye
21:15to the family that took them in
21:17and cared for them
21:18as their own.
21:20Don't cry. Don't cry because
21:21there won't be tears.
21:22No, I don't cry.
21:25Thank you very much.
21:26Thank you for what you did.
21:28I would have done it better than you.
21:31Thank you very much.
21:32Bye, Helen.
21:33Bye.
21:34Bye.
21:37As Helen says goodbye
21:38to the life she has known here,
21:40Marta reflects on the trauma
21:41the family has gone through.
21:44I have cried a lot
21:46to God
21:47because to come here
21:49it cost us almost
21:51our lives,
21:52the lives of my children
21:53and our lives.
21:55And my decision
21:56to return
21:57was something
21:58not that we decided
22:00but something
22:01that we forced us
22:03to do
22:03because my husband
22:06was deporting.
22:08as he drives
22:09Marta and Helen
22:09to the airport
22:10Xavier is overwhelmed.
22:12He's not just losing
22:13a child he loves
22:14from his school
22:14he's left wondering
22:16who will be next.
22:17With everything
22:18that has been going on
22:18for the last three months
22:19like
22:21are any of us safe?
22:23Are we going to be safe?
22:27Like as a community
22:28why are we going
22:29through this?
22:29You know?
22:33It's not fair.
22:37and we're the ones
22:38that have to pay
22:39the consequences.
22:42In the airport car park
22:43Helen's father calls
22:45from the detention center
22:46where he's still being held.
22:48ยฟVerdad, mi amor?

23:12They are going back
23:13to Ecuador
23:14in the hope
23:15of being reunited
23:15as a family.
23:16But for now
23:17Helen's father
23:18remains behind bars.
23:20Thank you.
23:21Very best of luck.
23:23Good luck.
23:24Bye, Helen.
23:25Bye.
23:27For Marta and Helen
23:28like so many
23:29other families
23:30the American dream
23:31they risked
23:32their lives for
23:33is over.
23:35Across Minnesota
23:36children are still
23:38living in fear
23:38and nobody
23:39has any idea
23:40just how long
23:41if ever
23:42it will take them
23:43to get over this.
23:46peace.
