00:12I'm Matthew McConaughey, I'm on a glacier in Norway.
00:1712 dog power, 24 dog leg power.
00:22And I'm about to be running wild with Bear Grylls.
00:26Giddy up.
00:27Bear and I've been trying to hook up to do this for about 20 years.
00:31Finally, we got this one together.
00:34Here we go, man. 20 years we're making.
00:36Enjoy it. Look forward to it.
00:48This is Norway.
00:50The land of water, ice, and rock bases like no other.
00:55Some of these mountains are over a billion years old.
00:59Carved and shaped by the fields and by the glaciers.
01:03If ever there is a place to expect the unexpected, it's here.
01:09I'm on my way to pick out the one and only, the legend, Matthew McConaughey.
01:15I hope he's ready. This one's gonna be special.
01:18Welcome to Running Wild.
01:30Thank you, Moa.
01:32The dog sled driver gave me what's called the uncor, an anchor.
01:36I have no idea.
01:38We're gonna be using this somewhere today.
01:44There's something about being out in Mother Nature that the buzz is that you're just a little closer to the
01:51food chain and where you are in the food chain.
01:53And that's a natural high.
01:55I've always thought if I die, if I go as part of the food chain, I just feel there's an
02:00elegance to that, man.
02:01It may hurt.
02:05But if that happens, I'll feel like that was written.
02:09We're not in Texas anymore, I know that.
02:13Matthew McConaughey is a legend.
02:16Say that again.
02:18Matthew McConaughey is a true legend.
02:21You bet I am.
02:22His name brings to mind so many classic movies, so many beloved characters.
02:29All right, all right, all right.
02:31From blockbusters to prestige television, McConaughey has been a leading man and an A-list icon for decades.
02:40Truth hurts, baby.
02:42Matthew also shares his wit and wisdom as a best-selling author to get to know the man behind the
02:49legendary action
02:53and heartwarming comedies on taking Texas' favorite son out of his element and into the wilderness of Norway.
03:00You can't be serious.
03:02This is going to be an adventure to remember.
03:05All right, all right, all right.
03:08Too late now, man.
03:10We're here.
03:10I ain't going back down the mountain.
03:14Coming across the glaciers.
03:16Okay, takes down, then.
03:18Mr. Matthew McConaughey, we go.
03:21Keep going.
03:23Three.
03:25Two.
03:26Okay, bears out.
03:28How are you, buddy?
03:29Nice to meet you, man.
03:29Well done.
03:30It's a fun time.
03:31I got a feeling today's going to be a little bit of adrenaline, but that's a natural high I'm looking
03:35forward to.
03:36Welcome to Ronnie Wild, man.
03:38Good to see you, man.
03:38Nice to see you.
03:39This kind of nation's happened for 20 years.
03:41Can I go on, man?
03:43Bear is the expert.
03:45I'm coming to his office, and we'll come out of here, hopefully both of us, with a story that we'll
03:50remember.
03:51Look at that.
03:52Beautiful.
03:53Woo!
03:53Woo!
03:54Sticking bricks.
03:55The hook.
03:56Yeah, I got the hook in the backpack.
03:58Matthew and I will be traveling seven miles through a remote glacial valley.
04:03We'll make our way down sheer granite cliffs, up steep rocky terrain, and through serpentine valleys, eventually finding a place
04:12to make camp.
04:13On day two, we'll attempt the largest descent in running wild history, and navigate through a series of frigid Arctic
04:21lakes to get to our extraction point.
04:23They say everything is bigger in Texas, but wait till Matthew sees Norway.
04:32Take a sound, Adam.
04:33Tail's good.
04:34Booth's good.
04:35Woo!
04:36Okay, we're down.
04:37We're down.
04:41We've got a drop off down here.
04:45All right, that's bus number one.
04:49The journey begins.
04:50I love it.
04:52That was my first natural high, right there.
04:55Just moving across the left, just a little bit of gravity, making you feel real small, which makes you feel
05:01real big.
05:02Very good, very good.
05:03Nice to see you, brother.
05:04Hey, good to see you, man.
05:05It's been a while.
05:06You've been keeping it okay?
05:07Yeah.
05:08Um, kiddos, all teenagers in the house now.
05:10I mean, it's crazy, isn't it?
05:12How old are your kids now?
05:13So a little few years ahead of yours, 16, 19, and 22.
05:16Awesome.
05:17Yeah, yeah, so fun.
05:18But we're still going.
05:19Hell yeah, man.
05:19And we're still married to the same women.
05:21Hey.
05:21You know what it's like?
05:22You can't take that for granted in life now.
05:25No.
05:25Because it's not the majority.
05:27It ain't happening.
05:28It's true.
05:28And I love the fact that we've known each other a while, and we always said we'd figure this
05:32out at the right time in the universe.
05:34Yeah, man.
05:34Good.
05:34First time in Norway?
05:35First time.
05:36Beautiful.
05:37Well, this is West Coast.
05:38Super remote.
05:39This time of year, obviously, also almost daylight, 24-7.
05:44Oh, daylight.
05:44And the weather's nice today, but the one concern about Norway weather is that it will
05:49change.
05:50Happy?
05:51I'm happy, man.
05:52Looking forward to it.
05:52Come on.
05:54So our journey takes us basically south.
05:56We can see a whole bunch of ravines, cliffs, lakes, rivers.
06:01Just take our time, Dan, all of this sort of thing.
06:04This undulating, pretty difficult terrain, we're just going to work buddy-buddy together,
06:08and we're looking for a big drop-off down towards this lake.
06:14Definitely not Texas now.
06:15No.
06:17This is a big respite for me, man.
06:20I need to shake the city off of me right now.
06:22Yeah.
06:23I've been really busy.
06:23Have you had quite a lot of city?
06:24Yeah, a lot of city, a lot of intellectual stuff, so.
06:28Oh, you're in great company with this lot and me.
06:32We'll bring the intellectual down a few notches.
06:35Let's bring it down, man.
06:46We have got some blueberry bushes.
06:48Look.
06:50Yeah, look.
06:51Little blueberries.
06:53Yeah.
06:54There you go.
06:54Try that.
06:57What would be your foods off the land up here?
07:03Well, it's a really interesting question because so many of the great, like the World War II resistance
07:08Norwegian heroes, they literally lived off reindeer moss, which is this lichen.
07:13I mean, they actually arguably saved the war because the Germans were so close to developing a nuclear weapon
07:19with the hard water plants up here.
07:21It was unguarded because it was established that nobody could survive up there in winter.
07:25And these Norwegian resistance guys dropped down and they blew this thing up and they survived for like 60-odd
07:31days.
07:31They'd eat reindeer moss that was in the stomachs of dead reindeer.
07:35So, I mean, they actually were like proper heroes.
07:38Okay, let's head that way and we'll drop around that bit.
07:41Okay.
07:43So, top of the mountain here, we've got some cliffs.
07:47Big thumping waterfalls.
07:52The weather's pretty good at the moment, but also, I've known it horrific up here, so we take nothing for
07:58granted.
07:59That's eventually where we want to head down to.
08:02Okay, come with me.
08:03Watch the step here.
08:04If you want to stay on that south trajectory, which means we're going to have to drop off this cliff.
08:10Okay, here we go.
08:11Be cautious here.
08:14A pre-placed diagonal line that takes us all the way down to the valley floor.
08:18It's going to save hours.
08:19It's quite committing though, if you haven't done this before, because that exposure becomes quite significant quite quickly.
08:27Okay, so then we've got a line here tied all the way to the bottom.
08:30Here we are.
08:32First time I guess we're going to get off our feet and repel.
08:36As we lower ourselves down, we're going to be clipped into this tight line, and it will take us away
08:41from the edge of the cliff.
08:43Got you.
08:43I don't think down the face, what it looks like is we're going to be two lines and kind of
08:48going off at an angle away from the face of the cliff, which I've never done before.
08:53If I do something like this, or if I do like a stunt in Tesseract Interstellar, I want to lift
08:58the stunt coordinator in the eye.
09:00I'm there shaking his hand in the morning going, how's your heart and mind these days, man?
09:04You know what I mean?
09:06You'll see me do it, it all makes sense.
09:08Super straight forward, trust the gear.
09:10Okay, we'll get tied in up here.
09:13Trust the gear.
09:19Here we go, here we go.
09:22Down, down, down.
09:24Keep going.
09:26And then we're good.
09:29So this will be the committee bit.
09:31Can you initially drop off?
09:40Definitely more slippery and awkward than it looks.
09:47You know you're technically strapped in, you know logically you're good, but it's still an abnormal thing to do physiologically.
09:59That's part of the buzz.
10:01Okay, we're good.
10:07It's definitely quite commiting if you've never done that before once you go over the edge and look down.
10:14You'll definitely get what he's calling the buzz.
10:24The unknown is what's exciting.
10:26You start to feel smaller and that's the beginning of the humility.
10:32You never take any of this for granted.
10:34Just the sheer vastness of Mother Nature.
10:38Feels alive now, you know?
10:40We'll go see what we can overcome.
10:42And after you overcome it, then you start feeling bigger.
10:48Right now, feeling good and small.
10:53You're good.
10:54Yeah, pull it back and then go for it.
11:10Okay, we're good.
11:11You're good.
11:24Trust the gear.
11:30I know, mathematically, and the science says all this stuff can hold you and I get it.
11:34But I wasn't there when they were twining this rope.
11:40And me, just kind of wanted to see them do it.
11:45Trust the gear.
11:47Well done, Matthew.
11:49Good jump.
12:00You get a cool workout on this, don't you, mother lad?
12:04Oh, yeah.
12:05I didn't anticipate that.
12:07Worth a figure.
12:09It's not like in a climbing gym, you know?
12:12No.
12:14Body sweat officially broken.
12:17That's an A-plus core-ass workout right there.
12:21I'm going to trust it a little bit more on the way down.
12:24I'm not quite there to the full-on surrender yet.
12:28But we've got a day in ask hours.
12:30Let's see.
12:32In winter, this will be under, like, 20 foot of snow.
12:36Your head's going to be so full of random weird facts by the end.
12:41Yeah.
12:43Look, we've got this nice stream.
12:44Definitely worth just having a splash of water, hydrate.
12:5099% of the time you don't drink from streams.
12:52Clear water isn't clean water.
12:55The glacier's so close above us,
12:57the likelihood of any contamination from dead animals
13:00or even animals drinking in this bit of stream is really low.
13:04This is as pristine and beautiful as you'll ever get.
13:07I mean, this is God's fresh water right here.
13:10You know, normally you've got to be careful
13:11when you see mountain streams like that that look beautiful.
13:14It doesn't always mean they're good to drink,
13:16but just coming across that flowing pool
13:19of beautiful Norwegian water is pristine.
13:23It tastes amazing.
13:24So when you do get a chance to rehydrate, take it.
13:28This water here, that's better than bottled water.
13:30Even if they put that in a bottle,
13:31it's better straight out of this horse right there.
13:43Let's have a quick stop.
13:50Well, this could be worse.
13:51This could be horrific weather, you know,
13:54and we're not counting our chickens because it's Norway,
13:57but at the moment this is as good as it ever gets.
13:59I mean, this is just beautiful.
14:01Temperature's perfect.
14:02There's not even a breeze right now.
14:04So was your first thing you kind of got in the public eye
14:07was unsolved mysteries?
14:10Remember that?
14:11Mm-hmm.
14:12Please don't shoot him.
14:15I wouldn't say that put me in the public eye.
14:17Really?
14:18But it was the first thing that did.
14:20And I always like to say this,
14:21they caught the killer two weeks later.
14:24So I was like, I must have done a decent job.
14:26You were very good.
14:29If you think back to that kind of time in your life,
14:31were you thinking, this is what I want to do,
14:33or were you doing that?
14:33Nah.
14:34It was, I was in the right bar at the right time.
14:36I knew the bartender.
14:37And he said, there's a producer down at the end of the bar
14:38in town producing a film.
14:40I went down and introduced myself.
14:42He says, his name is Don Phillips.
14:43He says, you ever done any acting?
14:45He goes, well, I'll come to this address tomorrow morning,
14:469.30.
14:47I got a script for you.
14:48There's a role in there.
14:48You might be right for the part.
14:50Next thing I know, I'm in this 70s Chevelle car
14:53getting a lavalier mic put on.
14:55There's not a word written for the singer.
14:57And I've never acted before.
15:00I'm sitting there going, who's my man?
15:01Who's Wooderson, right?
15:02What am I about?
15:03And I said, Wooderson.
15:03I said, what do I love?
15:04I said, I love my car.
15:06I said, bam, I'm in my 70s Chevelle.
15:08I said, I love rock and roll.
15:10I said, ah, man, I got Ted Nugent's Stranglehold
15:12in the eight track right now.
15:14There's two.
15:15I said, at three, I love to get high.
15:17Next thing I hear is action.
15:19I drop it and drive, and I think to myself,
15:21I got three of my favorite things already.
15:25All right, all right, all right.
15:28And that was the three affirmations
15:30for the three things I did.
15:32That first three words I ever said on film.
15:33That's amazing.
15:35That's amazing.
15:36And then drove out to Hollywood.
15:38Showed up on that guy's couch.
15:40Don Phillips, the guy I met that night in the bar.
15:42Slept on his couch.
15:43And I asked him, I said, can I get an agents meeting?
15:47And he started just yelling at me.
15:49He goes, you don't need a agents meeting.
15:52You're needing it too much.
15:54Hollywood smells you needing it.
15:56Hollywood will kick you out before you ever got in the door.
15:59Because what you need to do is get out of here
16:02and go with your mates from Days Confused,
16:04take your motorcycle somewhere and go ride somewhere.
16:06And we got tickets to Amsterdam the next day.
16:10Me, Rory Cochran and Cole Hauser,
16:12my new friends from Days Confused,
16:14rode through Europe for a month.
16:18Came back.
16:19Wasn't thinking about getting an agent.
16:21And about five days after I was back,
16:23he goes, tomorrow morning, I got us a meeting.
16:25William Morris Agency.
16:27He goes, you're ready.
16:28I go, why am I ready?
16:29He goes, you don't need it.
16:30You just want it.
16:31Went in.
16:32Yeah.
16:33Don was smart.
16:34He was real smart.
16:35He's up there now.
16:36But yeah, he was a legend.
16:37But it isn't like it just sort of fell upon you.
16:40You went to that bar to meet Don.
16:42You found your kind of niche.
16:43And then you kind of figured out,
16:45what do I need to do, you know?
16:46I was aggressive.
16:47But also, dude, I've definitely had some grace
16:51shined down on me with some things I look back
16:54that only make sense now.
16:56That's beautiful and true.
16:59Okay, we're going to keep moving.
17:02Otherwise, we'll start getting stiff.
17:03And then it gets harder to move.
17:06Okay.
17:07Go this way.
17:08Aha.
17:18In an alpine wilderness, there are always peaks and valleys.
17:25We need to make our way up and over this next ridge
17:28to get to camp.
17:30It's a good way for Matthew to get ready,
17:33as the terrain will only get more treacherous tomorrow.
17:37So we're going to head up over the top of this.
17:40Over the top of this?
17:42I'd ask our team to preplace a rope for us and a Jumar device.
17:46And I'm going to use this device to go up the rope,
17:48but it won't slide back down it.
17:50Again, it's physical, but it'll get us on top.
17:53We're going to what's called Jumar up it.
17:55A classic technique.
17:57It just goes one way.
17:59I don't know exactly how this Jumar works technically,
18:03but I'm about to find out.
18:09You can use your feet as much as you can.
18:12You're pulling, sliding, and you're getting then into a rhythm.
18:16It's just a technique that climbers use.
18:19Special Forces troops use it to get onto oil rigs and stuff.
18:22It allows you to climb up, but not slip down a rope.
18:26What goes down has got to come up.
18:29So these Jumars are always quite awkward.
18:32He had a cool workout on the first thing.
18:34This is going to be a forearm workout.
18:37That's what they say in nature.
18:39Full body workout.
18:40I'm curious to see what gets fatigued the first time
18:43my body on this one.
18:51Okay, Matthew.
18:53Yeah.
18:53On your way up, just pick up dinner.
18:55Just on that ledge.
18:56Okay.
18:57I'd ask the crew to leave a local delicacy
18:59for us to eat for camp later halfway up this rock face.
19:11Take your pull.
19:13Relax.
19:14Put your weight in it, then slide.
19:17As far as it will go.
19:19That's it.
19:20You'll get the rhythm.
19:22Oh, yeah.
19:23I've got to give slack here.
19:25There it is.
19:27That's it.
19:28Pull it all the way down, all the way in.
19:31The problem with most adventures is people get out of the gate too quick.
19:35I've learned that even working on sets.
19:38I used to wake up at 6 a.m.
19:39And fire out of bed and be like, let's go.
19:42And then by 10.30 in the morning, I poop.
19:44Well done, Matthew.
19:46I've learned to pace myself.
19:48It's a workout, isn't it?
19:49It's a much more relaxing visual.
19:52Well, see, when you're looking up, it's much better.
19:55Yeah, that's not as relaxing.
19:59But now that I trust my Dumas.
20:02Yeah.
20:07Oh, I see something.
20:09That's dinner.
20:09Yeah.
20:10It's provided by the reindeers.
20:13Looks like it definitely might need a fire.
20:15Yeah.
20:17Reindeer gift, huh?
20:19Reindeer gift from the bull.
20:22Perfect.
20:23What part of the bull?
20:24The crew kindly provided from the reindeer bull one of its testicles.
20:29That's how much they love us.
20:31A little reindeer.
20:33Ready for the evening.
20:35Sustain it.
20:37Hyah!
20:39You'll be able to climb this up now.
20:40Look.
20:41Use me.
20:42Use me.
20:43Here we are.
20:46Great.
20:49I like the Juma.
20:50It's hard work, isn't it?
20:51It's a good one.
20:52It's a good one, huh?
20:53I was, like, pouring a sweat when I got to the top.
20:56This one I dug quite a bit.
20:58Really good upper body workout.
20:59But, again, a rhythm with it.
21:01The patience.
21:01And it's really comfortable.
21:02You need a rest.
21:03It was like sitting in a lazy boy.
21:05Juma.
21:06I'm a fan.
21:06Look at Tinder hands.
21:08Look at Tinder city hands.
21:09That's good.
21:09That's good.
21:10The guns are firing.
21:12Tender feet, tender hands.
21:14Shake a little city off of you.
21:15We got a hat.
21:18So, top of the Juma.
21:19Rookie.
21:20First time, Matthew.
21:21Picks things up quickly.
21:23But he also managed to grab us dinner.
21:25You know, it's like...
21:28I mean, it's like Norway's version of...
21:30What is it?
21:30Rocky Mountain oysters.
21:33Okay.
21:35So, that's what it is.
21:37Reindeer balls.
21:38I'm taking it.
21:39That's a...
21:40Yeah, that's the left one, I believe.
21:42And I got the right one.
21:43So, we got one nut each.
21:46Look out for us tomorrow, man.
21:48Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
21:53Okay, come on.
21:53This is why we came up here.
21:55So, now we can see the whole...
21:56Oh, yeah.
21:56...whole valley all the way down to the coast.
21:59Still south.
22:00That's west, the sea.
22:02So, the Juma saved us a bunch of time.
22:05But both of us pretty tired.
22:06We're a little bit colder.
22:08So, I'm going to kind of cut through that little valley.
22:11And really then, we're going to start looking for a place to make camp.
22:16So, this is going to be a great place.
22:18We've got water.
22:20A little bit of flat ground.
22:21Yeah.
22:22And a view to die for.
22:25Protected from the bad weather.
22:26It's like an amphitheater of mountains.
22:28These one-man tents are great.
22:30So, we're going to get these up.
22:31Get a fire going.
22:32Get the testicle cooking.
22:34And we should be golden.
22:35We can have a fire in the opening here.
22:37Okay.
22:39Water.
22:40Need a pee in the night.
22:42Easy.
22:43Look at that.
22:45Well done.
22:46Yeah.
22:47Well done.
22:47You worked hard.
22:48Enjoyed that.
22:49You worked hard.
22:49It's a good, honest sweat.
22:51That's good.
22:51Yeah.
22:52It was a full-body workout.
22:54And it was long.
22:56It's amazing, isn't it?
22:57And it's true that we usually remember the getaways that were the most adventurous.
23:01The ones that didn't have the silk sheets.
23:03The ones that didn't have the pina colada under the umbrella.
23:07Even though those are nice.
23:08The highlight of the evening meal.
23:11Oh, it doesn't have a great smell.
23:13Come on.
23:14I'm not going to lie.
23:21No.
23:22What would you think that was if that was on the menu smell first?
23:25You'd probably look for a different restaurant.
23:27Something about cutting into a testicle.
23:29As a man, you can't help but feel pain.
23:32You know, it's phantom pain.
23:34Maybe that's how they describe it.
23:36Phantom pain.
23:37You know, we have got that.
23:38We could.
23:42I mean, ball stew.
23:47Well, dinner's cooking.
23:48Look at this.
23:50I mean, the last time we met, you very kindly cooked us, me and my family dinner.
23:54Yeah.
23:55You delivered these most amazing slabs of proper Texan T-bone.
24:00It was awesome.
24:02And I feel I'm under-delivered.
24:04I'm not going to lie.
24:05But this is apropos for where we are.
24:08It is apropos.
24:10100%.
24:15Your partnership with Woody, has that been a fun thing in your life?
24:19Yeah, he's a constant reminder for me to stay young.
24:23Because he's a perpetual eight-year-old.
24:25Oh, my gosh.
24:27I mean, you can't get mad at Woody for showing up barefoot three days late to your own wedding.
24:32Three days late.
24:33Because you can show up three days late to his own wedding and he don't care.
24:37He ain't never gone through a front door in his life.
24:40That's so funny.
24:41I mean, I woke up next to him in my bed between me and my wife because he snuck through
24:45the bedroom window in an house many times.
24:48No.
24:48Are you serious?
24:49That is brilliant.
24:52He's great.
24:53I always like to say, I've almost kissed my wife as many times as I have.
25:01How many years have you married now?
25:03Thirteen.
25:03What have you learned about marriage?
25:05It's a challenge once you have children.
25:07Sometimes we get down the track where it's so much about the kids and we look up and go, oh,
25:12hey.
25:13Yeah.
25:13How are you doing?
25:14Yeah.
25:14And I've got to remind myself, I forgot who told me this a long time ago about the best example
25:18you can give your kids is how you treat the mother.
25:22My grandpa, he said, parenting in three words, example, example, example.
25:29I think a man's a prince until he has children and then becomes a king.
25:33I don't think there's anything more important that a man can do.
25:37In effect, man, we're mortal.
25:39That's the beginning of our immortality.
25:42And hopefully we're lucky enough for them to have offspring and it continues.
25:46To pass that down, I think that's the greatest art that a man can make.
25:50Yeah.
25:51Is being a good father to a son or a daughter.
25:53Mm-hmm.
25:54The rest is detailed, really.
25:56Right?
25:58Should we try the testicle?
26:00Hell yeah.
26:02Look at that.
26:05I would say it's improved with cooking.
26:09Reindeer testicle.
26:11Here's today.
26:13Life, friendship, family.
26:15Amen.
26:23Hey.
26:24Hey.
26:25Can I have another piece, please?
26:28That's a hell of a lot better than I thought it was going to be.
26:31That's a phrase you don't often associate with this show.
26:38Rudolph.
26:44That's really not bad.
26:46Texture was 6 out of 10.
26:48Taste was 6 out of 10.
26:50If you just got out of your head what the heck it was, you'd throw the right kind of spice
26:55on there, some of my famous rub, char the edges a little bit.
26:59You might have an 8 out of 10 and have something you could put on the menu.
27:04Happy?
27:05Being not here is a heck of a gift, man.
27:09Mother Nature is God's greatest art.
27:11You've got a new book, a mix of poems and prayers.
27:15Poems and prayers.
27:16Yeah, great.
27:16Where's that come from?
27:18It came from me looking around, maybe something about getting in the early 50s.
27:22You know, we go from being a child, you're naive, then you're innocent.
27:27Then you're skeptical as you learn things.
27:30And then there's that fourth one people become, which is cynical.
27:33That's the disease of aging.
27:35One of the worst diseases we have is cynicism.
27:38I'm not for foolish optimism.
27:40I don't believe everything's always just rosy and great and everyone's always telling the truth
27:45and everything just hunky-dory.
27:47No, it's not.
27:49But to sort of tap out and go, that's just the way it is.
27:55It's just not ready to throw up a white flag on that.
27:59So I myself personally was going, man, I want more belief.
28:04So poems and prayers, more mystical, more spiritual, more faithful.
28:10Belief in self, others, potential, God.
28:14No, I think life without any form of faith is, life's hard enough as it is.
28:20Right.
28:21I don't want to do it on my own.
28:23I get it, it's hard.
28:24You look at leadership, you look at, turn on the news, there's evidence.
28:28It doesn't give reason for belief, you know?
28:32At least in the civilized world, doesn't it?
28:33You're out here like this, you sure as heck get evidence for belief.
28:38If I'm not finding it in the world that I'm seeing around me,
28:43maybe I'm looking at the wrong place.
28:48So a really fun day with Matthew.
28:51He's a bright spirit.
28:51He's such a grounded person as well and motivated by life and by his family and faith.
28:57And those are enduring things in life.
28:59But both of us pretty tired.
29:01We're going to definitely sleep well, I think, tonight.
29:03It's a weird place because obviously it never gets dark in Norway in summertime.
29:07So you just kind of put the hood up, cover your eyes, and sleep.
29:12Big day tomorrow.
29:14Something comforting about it.
29:15Fire.
29:16No walls except for these mountains.
29:19Trusted environment.
29:20Whatever you say, you can blow in the breeze as far as it wants to.
29:23And you've got a pretty good idea.
29:24It's going to land on safe ears, even.
29:26And who's ever here as they are.
29:28Yeah, something comforting about it.
29:30I've had three really good buzzes today.
29:33Natural highs.
29:34I've got a feeling that a couple more are coming tomorrow.
29:56Okay, those worked.
30:00First night in Norway in the tent.
30:01It's not bad at all.
30:03I got more sleep than I did the night before.
30:04No, the trickle all night was a little bedtime melody.
30:13This feels like Norway now.
30:15Okay, let's go.
30:18Matthew and I have 1,500 feet of elevation still to descend.
30:23So we'll have to find our way down this granite mountain
30:26and through a series of glacial lakes to get to our extraction point.
30:32The only constant with the Norwegian weather is that it will change.
30:36And this mountain sees a lot of rain, a lot of snow.
30:40Watch this step down here.
30:41It's going to be quite slippery.
30:45Morale is always harder when it's raining.
30:47I've learned that.
30:48It's also where we distinguish ourselves.
30:51You know, you go anywhere that's new.
30:54You're hyper-focused.
30:56Yeah.
30:57We've still got some journeys between here and where we're getting picked up.
31:01So a bit of hiking in and eventually our way out of here.
31:05Put a smile on.
31:06Keep going.
31:06Yeah, we're ready.
31:07Hello, guys.
31:08Hey!
31:11Yes, mate.
31:14Mh.
31:17Mh.
31:19Mh.
31:20Mh.
31:22Mh.
31:22Mh.
31:23Mh.
31:27Mh.
31:28That slippery rock looks wet.
31:33Look, this starts with drop off now.
31:35Mm-hmm.
31:41You can see this is going to be steep.
31:44We're going to definitely need rope for this.
31:46All of this rock is carved by glacial ice, so it's smooth.
31:51And once that drop off starting, it's going to get quite committing, I think, this.
31:55You can see all the way down to the lake there.
31:58Yeah, I'm just anticipating this is going to be bigger than maybe it feels from up here.
32:05So that's probably about 800 foot down to that.
32:08Yeah, it's definitely quite a bit more than that, uh, the first descent.
32:14But we're obviously going to be much steeper.
32:18Fear of height?
32:20Sure.
32:23Okay, let's make a solid anchor point here.
32:27So, obviously, we haven't got a lot of trees to tie off to.
32:30Mm-hmm.
32:31These are the rocks.
32:32Not strong enough.
32:33Hey.
32:33Have you got that talon from the dogs?
32:35Yes, I do.
32:36Yeah.
32:37You might have been thinking, why do we need this thing?
32:40The terrain so far has been treacherous, but nothing compares to what's ahead.
32:46If Matthew and I are going to get off this mountain, we have to go down the longest rappel I've
32:51ever done on Running Wild.
32:54This is 800 feet of sheer granite rock.
32:58But there are no good anchor points, so we're going to have to use the brake from his dog sled.
33:03We'll stamp it into the ground, tie it off, and make our way down.
33:07The anchor.
33:08Yeah.
33:08As long as the force is that way, but as soon as you go like this, it lifts out just
33:13beautifully.
33:14I mean, it works because all the force is low.
33:17Yeah.
33:17Give that a kick in.
33:18It's only dug into about that much, you know, grass and soil.
33:22It looks a little precarious, but as long as the angle is low, which it's going to be as we
33:26go over these rocks, that's going to hold.
33:30Okay.
33:31Yep.
33:31Well, we were using it as what is called an anchor, but this time it's not stopping dogs.
33:36It's holding the rope.
33:37Trust the engineer.
33:40I feel good about it.
33:41Plus, bear's gone first.
33:44You've got to really pull it to release it.
33:46But keep it cranked open at the top, and you're lifting hundreds of feet of rope here, which is super
33:51heavy.
33:51It would get easier if it gets steeper.
33:53Yes.
33:54And once it gets steeper, just lean back and trust the system.
33:57Okay.
33:58Lean back and trust the equipment.
34:02So, yeah, it's all good.
34:04Probably another 20 meters of this.
34:06And then it looks like it drops off, okay?
34:09Yep.
34:12And this is where it starts to get a little steeper.
34:16And this is where it's going to get scarier for Matthew.
34:19And you can see all the way to the bottom.
34:23And rope.
34:25I've needed what looks like every meter of it.
34:37I like it.
34:39Glad that anchor's holding.
34:42Another big drop off here.
34:45Hope there's enough rope for even to reach, to be honest.
34:49I thought I'd be near the bottom by now, but still a long way down.
34:53Wow.
34:54Lean back and trust the equipment.
35:20Okay.
35:23So I knew we'd need a lot of rope for that.
35:26800 foot in total.
35:28Even with that, it's still just tickling the bottom.
35:31About five foot left over.
35:33So that was kind of at our limit.
35:35I'm not sure what to expect, but trust to and with.
35:39I'm not going to be looking down singing songs.
35:43I might be looking up singing songs.
35:45Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
35:51Lean back and trust your equipment.
35:55Lean back and trust your equipment.
36:14The awkward bit is the start.
36:16You know, it's at the top when all the nerves are going.
36:19It's not yet vertical, kind of awkward ground.
36:22You've got all that weight of rope, but just trust it, keep moving.
36:24Once it gets steeper, it will start to flow and that rope will run smoother.
36:40An adventure is going to put yourself in a place that you do not know.
36:45I do not want to do this.
36:46I've never done this before, but I'm going to overcome that fear.
36:52I'm usually better in real life than I am in my dream.
36:55In my dreams, I'll never get the girl.
36:57I don't make the jump.
36:58I think belief is actually the original dream.
37:02So I have to believe in myself.
37:04Here we go, baby.
37:08Do I have a plan?
37:09No, I'm going to let it come to me.
37:11I'm taking my time.
37:12Play chess with the mountain a little bit.
37:15This kind of thing is one of those drugs that money can't buy.
37:19This is not my, necessarily, comfort zone.
37:22But the experience, I'm sure it'll be something I damn sure remember.
37:27People maybe have rappelled in a gym or on a climbing wall that's all nice and controlled,
37:31but it's different out here.
37:33But he's got that glint in his eye, and you can't cheat your way there.
37:36You've got to earn that.
37:37And this is why I love this stuff.
37:44You dig well.
37:46This is a big one for sure.
37:49Yes!
37:51Good effort.
37:56Oh, that was good.
38:00I've got to admit it was longer than I thought.
38:03You do have to trust your blind spot, mate.
38:05I'm betting I was a few inches further back, leaning back, trusting it,
38:08than I was on the first one on that one.
38:11It gives you more stability.
38:13It's feeling more balance.
38:14Once the body weight's bringing that down, and you're not having to force it,
38:17you really feel much more control.
38:19That's good.
38:20That was good.
38:21That was a buzz.
38:22Proper buzz number four, I do believe it was.
38:25And the best one yet.
38:27Good job.
38:27That's a long way.
38:28Thanks, man.
38:32Yeah.
38:37So we're going to keep following this up.
38:39Yeah.
38:39This will eventually lead to a lake.
38:41And eventually our pickup's going to be the other side of it.
38:45Okay.
38:45So we're looking for the lake first of all.
38:59We've been following this river up through this valley.
39:03We've reached this final lake.
39:04I have said to our team, leave me a really clear red bag.
39:08And inside that's going to be a flare.
39:10And that's the flare we're going to use to call in the helicopters.
39:13Little red bag?
39:14Yeah.
39:16Check out your three o'clock.
39:19Yeah, I thought that was a little fishing pot actually.
39:22Yeah, that is a red bag.
39:25Yeah.
39:27In typical fashion, our team haven't made it easy.
39:30They've left it out in the lake.
39:32Oh.
39:34So close.
39:36Remember, it's a glacial lake.
39:38So this is cold.
39:39This is like a few degrees above freezing.
39:42Looks like it's a swim to finish this journey.
39:44Okay.
39:45In.
39:46Out.
39:47Dry gear on.
39:49Okay.
39:50Hell yeah.
39:52Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
40:00Sweet.
40:02Okay.
40:03You ready?
40:04This water is going to be freezing, freezing cold.
40:07Yes.
40:09Okay.
40:10We're in.
40:11Head in now.
40:13Come in.
40:13Woo, woo, woo, woo.
40:18I love it.
40:18Woof.
40:20Woof.
40:21Woof.
40:21Woof.
40:23Woof.
40:23Woof.
40:23What's this water?
40:2435?
40:25Yeah.
40:26Yeah.
40:29I love it.
40:30You know you'll miss.
40:31This is wild, man.
40:33You're a player in there?
40:49Oh, boy.
40:50Oh, boy.
40:51Oh, boy.
40:53Oh, boy.
40:53Oh, boy.
40:54You're going.
40:55What is going on?
40:56What is going on?
40:58Okay.
41:00Okay.
41:01This is wet.
41:03We're in trouble.
41:07Okay.
41:08One flare.
41:09Okay.
41:10That's our way out of here.
41:11We found the red bag with flare,
41:14which was not on the land.
41:15It was out in the water.
41:17Thank you very much.
41:21It's not wet, we don't think.
41:23This goes off, copter comes, and we're out.
41:31It's all right close to the water.
41:32Is that okay, Henrik?
41:33Yeah, that's all fine.
41:34This has been full of surprises.
41:36Had four big buzzes, like natural hives.
41:38Great fear, looking down, composing and doing it,
41:42trusting the gear, trusting the people,
41:44and then conversations with Bear and I.
41:46When you're out like this with somebody one-on-one,
41:48you get comfortable a lot quicker in a shorter amount of time.
41:52And I think the fact that you're both dealing with the unknown,
41:55there's a natural bonding experience that happens,
41:57which is really cool about getting out and out and about
41:59the wilderness.
42:00Okay, let's go.
42:01Go, go, go.
42:09This has been a really fun journey for me,
42:13and obviously Matthew McConaughey is such an icon,
42:16but the fun part for me is the man behind the icon
42:19and the values that he lives by.
42:22It's about family, it's about faith,
42:24but also I think he's someone that is determined
42:27to live life on his terms
42:30and willing to step into the unknown
42:32and tackle the difficulty.
42:34And that's rare in life, but it's beautiful.
42:37Hot damn!
42:40Yeah, boy!
42:41Bear, thank you for having me.
42:44We've been trying to do this and come together
42:46and take on these adventures for over 20 years.
42:48We finally made it happen.
42:49It was even better and more than I expected.
42:52Amen.
42:53Keep it up.
42:54Just keep living.
42:56Well done, brother.
42:58Well done.
42:58Nice job.
43:00You're doing it, baby.
43:01Come on, baby.
43:02Come on, baby.
43:03Come on!
43:05Whoo!
