00:00Earlier talking about the Sabres and their win last night, Game 4, Sunday afternoon.
00:05Definitely Alex Lyon, question mark.
00:08I like that conversation. I don't think it is insane for it not to be Lyon,
00:14but I'd be really surprised if it were Lukanen in the game.
00:18I just like talking it out.
00:20And we brought up the Carolina 06 season.
00:24A couple of callers to the station have mentioned that as an example of a team
00:28that's gone back and forth with goalies successfully, as we said earlier,
00:32I think they did it more out of desperation.
00:34But the Sabres are not in a desperate situation here.
00:37They weren't even in one yesterday.
00:39No.
00:40But, you know, that's true that they went back and forth in 06.
00:45So I have one of the box scores up from that series.
00:48You know there were five former Sabres on that Oilers team?
00:55Five.
00:55Five.
00:56They weren't all former Sabres at the time.
00:59I think three were.
01:02And two would play for the Sabres later.
01:05Yeah.
01:05Well, I know Pekka was there.
01:07Yes.
01:14Is Sekera there by then?
01:15No, he's still.
01:16He's not even here yet.
01:18Is he?
01:19No.
01:19Maybe not.
01:20He comes in later.
01:21Yeah, sorry.
01:23He definitely played there after playing here, but wrong era.
01:27I'm already out.
01:29I think it is three that hadn't been to the Sabres yet, actually.
01:32Okay.
01:32And two, Pekka and Dwayne Rolison.
01:34Right.
01:35Rolison, of course.
01:36Rolison's their game one starter and gets injured late.
01:39Yep.
01:39When Ty Conklin goes in, he would play for the Sabres, what, the next year?
01:46Right.
01:47And gets scored on in the last minute.
01:49And he never sees any more action in the series.
01:52There's a third guy.
01:55I don't remember his name.
01:56There's a third guy that plays the rest of the series.
01:57Rolison does not return.
01:58Right.
01:59Oh, now I really want to think of the name of that guy.
02:01It's not that important right this second.
02:03Also, Yaros Pacek signs in free agency from Edmonton.
02:08Okay.
02:08That offseason.
02:09Right.
02:10And Rafi Torres.
02:12Oh, Rafi Torres.
02:14All right.
02:14Important trade deadline.
02:16Yeah.
02:16Acquisition.
02:17Rafi Torres.
02:18Maybe 2010, the Boston series.
02:19Yes.
02:20Yes.
02:20You want the other goalie's name?
02:22Yes.
02:23UC Markkinen.
02:24Oh, boy.
02:25I would not have.
02:26I remember the name, but that was not the name I was thinking it was going to be.
02:31Yeah, they were down bad.
02:33Still went to seven games, right?
02:35That series.
02:35It did.
02:36Man.
02:37Not that I watched any of it.
02:38I was too hurt.
02:41I could not watch Carolina after their win against the Sabres.
02:45I couldn't.
02:46I think I still haven't.
02:47I watched a good amount of it, but I know I missed one game late in the series because
02:53I remember being at a tragically hip show at Art Park while a game was on.
02:58I was like, yeah, whatever.
03:00Whatever.
03:00I'm okay not seeing game five of this Stanley Cup final.
03:04I think that lines up.
03:05Anyway, that's my memory.
03:07I hope it's right.
03:08Utah and Vegas.
03:09That's tonight.
03:10Game three tonight in Salt Lake City.
03:12Yeah.
03:12First ever playoff game in Utah.
03:14Only the second year of the franchise.
03:16They've done a really cool thing.
03:18They have invited fans, you know, regionally who have become Utah fans that originally were
03:25Vegas fans or even Vegas fans currently who want to just trade, they're giving you a Utah
03:30Mammoth player jersey for in exchange for your Las Vegas Golden Knights jerseys, which
03:36is really a boss move, man.
03:38Love it.
03:38That is really, really cool that they're doing that.
03:41I love it too.
03:43I love everything about it.
03:44I don't know if everybody loved the Mammoth nickname.
03:47I liked the Utah Hockey Club from last year, but the Zamboni they've got that looks like
03:52a woolly Mammoth is incredible.
03:54That's real, right?
03:56I saw people sitting in it.
03:58I could get got by AI here.
04:01I don't know, actually.
04:02I'm pretty sure it's a real thing.
04:05Really cool.
04:05My level of commitment to the National Hockey League this year has not extended quite that
04:09far.
04:10To the Utah Mammoth Zamboni?
04:11No, it's not.
04:12But I'm open to looking in.
04:15I mean, I think tonight could be that night.
04:17It's Friday.
04:18I'm excited about that.
04:19I'm just really happy to have Tampa and Montreal away from the Sabres.
04:25Yes, I agree.
04:25Because I have been dying to sit and really watch that.
04:28We got to do a little of that Sunday afternoon, at least it was afternoon where I was, before
04:34the Sabres and Bruins played game one, but I only got so far, and then the Sabre game
04:39started, and that was the end of that.
04:40So I'm ready for just to get home tonight and put that on and just look at it.
04:47Game three in Montreal.
04:49I mean, that is going to be beautiful.
04:51And, you know, speaking of Carolina before, I really never had an instinct last night to
04:56watch Carolina-Ottawa.
04:58I mean, the uniforms.
05:00It looked horrible.
05:02It looks horrible.
05:03It looked horrible.
05:05What Carolina's wearing on the road now is really tough.
05:09It's not worse, however, than Anaheim.
05:13I can't believe Anaheim's uniforms are real.
05:16The all orange?
05:18No, the white with orange and orange.
05:19Okay.
05:20Orange helmet, orange pants.
05:21Yeah.
05:21I can't believe that actually that passed and got through, R&D, and they wear that.
05:27Could you ever?
05:29I guess you have to.
05:30If you're playing there, I guess you do.
05:32Yeah.
05:33But, I mean, is Carolina-Ottawa?
05:36Game two was, I think I read, was amazing.
05:39Double overtime?
05:39Yeah.
05:40Oh, yeah.
05:40It was really good.
05:41And there was the weird, there was the penalty shot off of the overturned goal.
05:45And it was weird.
05:46But whatever.
05:47Yeah, it was good.
05:49What was last night?
05:51What's Ottawa's problem?
05:53Carolina's too good?
05:54It seems like it.
05:56They're also down bad now.
05:57I don't know how early in the game.
05:59I definitely didn't see it happen.
06:00But by the time I got back to it late, Sanderson had been knocked out with a headshot.
06:06And he's not coming back.
06:08At least not for game four.
06:09And they also lost, I think, his partner, Zub.
06:13So they're down, I think, their top 2D.
06:16And 3-0.
06:18Right.
06:18And the hit, it's Taylor Hall that hits Sanderson.
06:22And it's shoulder right to chin.
06:25But I think we already learned today, no supplemental discipline on that.
06:28Not that it's going to help Ottawa, anyway, that much.
06:31I mean, you take Taylor Hall, that lineup.
06:33I don't think it would make that big of a dent in Carolina.
06:35And the guys, they're down.
06:37I don't know what happened to the other guy.
06:38But Sanderson is their, I mean, he's their number one D.
06:43And he got wrecked.
06:45Punishment for Peter Schaefer.
06:48Right.
06:4820 years later.
06:49Right, right.
06:50Glenn is with us.
06:51Hello.
06:52Good afternoon, guys.
06:55Mike, I tend to agree with you.
06:57I believe they should go back with UPL for Game 4.
07:01Reason being is you can see since December when they went on that run,
07:07regardless of what the one goaltender did the previous game,
07:10Lindy kept switching back and forth.
07:13And it just seemed to these goaltenders, that extra break gave them a,
07:18you know, a big boost in terms of their performance.
07:22So, that's my opinion on it.
07:25Well, that would be part of the argument that you know what you got during the season
07:31based on the rhythm that they were in.
07:34And not always was it every other day, but often it was.
07:37And this is two days in between anyway.
07:40And it's just, I think it's close enough.
07:43I can't quite get myself to say I would do it.
07:47But I don't think it's a bad idea.
07:51And this is part of why, that you would get back into,
07:54you'd hope to be able to get back into a rotation,
07:58which I would say was a strength of the Sabres during the season.
08:03Look how it went.
08:04I mean, look how they both did.
08:05being in that kind of role, a tandem.
08:09And so, that works for me.
08:12I wouldn't be afraid to do it.
08:14It would really be interesting.
08:16The reactions would be, I mean, out there.
08:19For sure.
08:19If they went back to Lucan and after last night.
08:22But, like you talked about a little bit earlier,
08:25I mean, the odds are not necessarily bad
08:28that they'll want to go back to Lucan and at some point, eventually.
08:33If Lyon isn't just great every game and they win every game,
08:36they would, you know, maybe do that.
08:39And, ideally, it wouldn't be, like, more than a week
08:42or two weeks before you do that.
08:45So, I mean, every game is so important now.
08:48But, I'm not, like, done with Lucan
08:51just because he gave up two bad goals.
08:53Me either.
08:54I said it all along leading up to Game 3
08:56when I was stumping for Lyon to get the start last night,
08:59which, ultimately, he did.
09:00Like, I'm not done.
09:02If you're talking about another six weeks of hockey here,
09:06absolutely both guys are going to have opportunity to play.
09:09I think either, it would either be performance
09:13or even fatigue, emotional, physical, mental fatigue.
09:18I think one little piece that, it's a subtle thing,
09:21but if you wanted to go all the way here
09:24with what they were doing in the regular season
09:27to increase the comfort level of each guy,
09:31they not only didn't play consecutive games,
09:35they didn't dress for consecutive games for a long time there.
09:39When all three guys were healthy,
09:41the guy that played, Lyon or Lucanen, you know, played,
09:44and the other guy was in a suit and Ellis backed up.
09:48And so, I doubt you're going to get all the way there.
09:52Like, I don't think they would go, it seems apparent
09:55Ellis is clearly the third guy.
09:57We can argue all day about who's 1A, 1B, 1, 2, whatever,
10:01between Lucanen and Lyon.
10:02They're clearly the two best guys.
10:04They're both dressing.
10:05You're not putting your third guy in the backup position
10:09because if something happened, you'd never forgive yourself.
10:12Not that he couldn't go in and play well,
10:13but if you've got him ranked,
10:15you've got to have the top two guys dressed.
10:17Pat is next.
10:19Pat, what do you think?
10:19Hey, guys, I've got to go with Lyon on this one
10:22just due to the fact that, you know,
10:24he's been known as the road goalie for the team
10:26majority of the year to begin with.
10:28And it seems like the guy couldn't lose on the road
10:31at majority of the time.
10:34And I think it's to the point now where we're,
10:37we're, we cracked that code, I think.
10:39I think the Sabres have figured out where this game three,
10:42this past game three was,
10:44where they figured out how to beat Boston
10:46in every aspect of the game.
10:47And I think Lyon is your answer,
10:50but you don't want to get in a shootout
10:52or a battle with these guys,
10:53making it 6-7 or 7-8 or whatever,
10:56like a Tampa game and having UPL in that.
10:59I think Lyon gave up that one goal,
11:02locked in,
11:03and now I think it's smooth sailing from here.
11:05And don't forget, it's the playoffs.
11:07It seems like every year it's one goalie.
11:10It's all it takes to get locked in to ride the wave.
11:13And he might be the answer.
11:15I think, well, he might be.
11:17I think that would tend to be the case more often
11:20when you have a goalie that has been great all season
11:24or a clear number one, and that's not what,
11:27the goalies have been really good this year,
11:28I'm not saying they haven't.
11:29But there is,
11:30this is not a team with an established guy.
11:33So it would be an outlier in, you know,
11:36the last 20 years if the Sabres went deep using two.
11:39I don't think they're going to,
11:40and I think if I put a poll up who would start game four,
11:4595% at least would vote Lyon.
11:48Is that too high?
11:49I mean, who wouldn't?
11:51I mean, I just,
11:53all I'm saying is I think it's worth talking about.
11:56You liked the point about the long game
11:59when you advocated for Lyon in game three,
12:01and that's a lot of where my head is at.
12:02That was a great, you know, analysis.
12:04You talked me into it.
12:05And I think there is still that.
12:07Yeah, the same logic does hold here,
12:10I have to admit.
12:12Because what I was looking to avoid
12:16by going to Lyon when they did for game three
12:19was having it be like a panicky,
12:22you've got a gun to your head,
12:24you know, we're really down bad.
12:27And you avoid that by being proactive about it.
12:30The same logic holds here.
12:32If you want to really establish
12:35that you're going to play either guy
12:37and they're truly equals,
12:38then you do it.
12:41The question is whether you'd be able to
12:43get all the way there
12:45because you've spent your entire life
12:48since you were 17 or 18 years old
12:50being around this sport.
12:51I'm talking about Lindy Ruff now.
12:52And like, I just won a game
12:54three to one with this guy,
12:55made some really huge saves,
12:57and helped us crush
12:58two late power plays against us.
13:01And I'm going to do what now?
13:03I'm going to put the other guy in?
13:05No, I can't do that.
13:07So I just, it's like the,
13:09even Lindy Ruff maybe is like
13:11got like warring bits of him.
13:13Like, because there's,
13:14there's reason why you'd want
13:16the flexibility as the coach
13:17to be able to truly just
13:19treat the guys as equals
13:20so the team isn't bothered
13:22in the least
13:22when you do make a switch.
13:24But I think it's,
13:27it's hard to overcome the,
13:29oh, he played so good.
13:31No, I know.
13:31You just can't get past it.
13:32And it's two days off.
13:33You just can't get past it.
13:34You know, think about it this way too.
13:36If it was about the rotation,
13:38Lyon is back from injury,
13:39could have started game two.
13:41Okay, well, nobody would have done that.
13:43Right.
13:44And what happened in game two?
13:48Did anybody call the post-game show
13:50after game two to say
13:51Lyon should have started?
13:52Maybe.
13:53We weren't talking about that
13:54before game two.
13:55But, you know,
13:56Lyon incorrect in that game.
13:59Wasn't, you know,
14:00you didn't have to have predicted that.
14:02But that's kind of,
14:04I don't know.
14:05It's not,
14:05I can't say it's cause and effect
14:06that he did that
14:07because he had just played
14:08the last game.
14:09I mean, I can't,
14:09I can't go that far.
14:10But you got here with both guys.
14:13I wouldn't want to,
14:14you know,
14:15block out that going forward.
14:18Paul Hamilton coming up at five.
14:20Mike Schoep and the Bulldog here.
14:21This is WGR.
