00:00:00MyRenoRules is proudly brought to you by LMCT+.
00:00:04Australia's biggest loyalty program and best rewards club.
00:00:11Previously on MyRenoRules.
00:00:13It all began when one of Australia's youngest billionaires, Adrian Portelli,
00:00:18snapped up two rundown 70s brick relics in Bulleen, Melbourne.
00:00:24The plan? Transform these tired, forgotten homes.
00:00:30Into jaw-dropping luxury showstoppers.
00:00:34And then give them away to two lucky Australian families.
00:00:39But he couldn't do it alone.
00:00:42Enter our four teams.
00:00:45Welcome to MyRenoRules.
00:00:50Taking on House One.
00:00:52Oh, my God.
00:00:54Competitive parents of three, Nathan and Julia.
00:00:57Women don't necessarily like me
00:00:59because they get a little bit intimidated by me.
00:01:01Snapping at their heels, interior designer Emma and her mum, Michelle.
00:01:06Little Maltese terriers.
00:01:09At House Two, Greek best mates Frankie and Isaac.
00:01:13There's a big brand out there with a slogan, just do it.
00:01:16Ours would be, we'll work it out.
00:01:19And young parents, landscaper Mitch and interior designer Shaz.
00:01:24I think what makes us a good team is that we always just back each other.
00:01:28Yeah, 100%.
00:01:30With $100,000 in prize money up for grabs, they hit the ground running.
00:01:36Boom, brothers!
00:01:38For House Two, it was laugh at first sight.
00:01:42But it wasn't all fun and games.
00:01:45I'm very worried. Isaac's worried.
00:01:47The boys were quickly overwhelmed by their first bathroom reno.
00:01:51Our ceilings out.
00:01:53Pull the whole ceiling out.
00:01:54Right now, we don't look like we have enough time to finish the bathroom.
00:01:56And Mitch and Shaz's battle with Mother Nature.
00:02:00With the insulation being wet, does it all have to come out and be replaced?
00:02:03Yeah.
00:02:04Set back their big living room plans.
00:02:07Bloody Melbourne weather, eh, Jack?
00:02:10In House One, Nathan and Julia ditched beige and went bold.
00:02:14I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong.
00:02:18An early budget blowout unleashed the Maltese Terriers.
00:02:22$23,000.
00:02:24In Emma and Michelle...
00:02:26No-one in their right mind would ever want to do this.
00:02:30Lack of labour budget forced them to go DIY with a rust effect feature wall they had no clue how
00:02:37to do.
00:02:39Look shit house.
00:02:40Tonight, the race to the finish hits overdrive.
00:02:45I need Windex.
00:02:46Jess, you better hurry up.
00:02:47As Adrian drops another epic surprise.
00:02:50I've decided to up the prize money.
00:02:55Then, the very first room reveals.
00:02:58Whoa!
00:02:59This is super luxurious.
00:03:01I cannot believe it.
00:03:02The colour.
00:03:03I love it.
00:03:04But with so much at stake...
00:03:06Let's meet the people who will be scoring your rooms each week.
00:03:10The judges are playing hardball.
00:03:12It just was hideous.
00:03:24I've been working here.
00:03:26Thank you bro.
00:03:28I would have waved to you but my car is full of cushions.
00:03:30I'm sure I see you.
00:03:31My husband has to start him.
00:03:34That's a room just tall.
00:03:38Delirium and exhaustion have kicked in.
00:03:40Oh, my gosh.
00:03:42Apparently an hour and 45-minute sleep is none of them.
00:03:45As our four teams head towards a frantic final day of Renault...
00:03:50..on sight...
00:03:55..the tradies are already in full swing.
00:04:00Because in just four hours, the judges will cast their eyes
00:04:04over our contestants' rooms for the very first time,
00:04:08bringing them one step closer to winning the $100,000.
00:04:16But after an exhausting night of painting...
00:04:19..with Maltese Terriers, Emma and Michelle,
00:04:22having taken on House One's bedroom and living room...
00:04:25Dying to see this wall.
00:04:27..they're about to find out
00:04:28if their untested rust effect living room wall is rust or bust.
00:04:34Last night, about 11, 11.30,
00:04:36I put on the activated solution on it,
00:04:39and we just stood back and thought it was going to be
00:04:42a big fireworks situation and did not happen at all.
00:04:44And we got nothing. We got nothing.
00:04:46I said, let's just leave it, let's just leave it.
00:04:49Just about to put on the rust solution.
00:04:52I don't know when it will activate and show the rust,
00:04:55hopefully straight away.
00:04:57All right, here it is.
00:05:01I don't see anything happening.
00:05:06Oh, my God, I'm so nervous about our rust wall.
00:05:11Hopefully, it all worked, because we're going to be at the bottom...
00:05:15..of the leaderboard, for sure.
00:05:28I love it, I love it, I love it.
00:05:32Emma, it looks fantastic.
00:05:35Wow, look at the rust on the corner there.
00:05:37I love it.
00:05:38It looks good.
00:05:40I'm ecstatic with the living room feature wall.
00:05:42Yeah, me too.
00:05:43I absolutely am.
00:05:44A little bit of a sigh of relief.
00:05:46That's so good.
00:05:48Now we can start finishing the room,
00:05:50not killing each other, and then also, you know, winning.
00:05:56I have my own property development company called Project E.
00:05:59There'd be times where the builder would be like,
00:06:02no, we can't do it.
00:06:03You can, we're doing it.
00:06:04This is how it's been done.
00:06:06Maltese Terry comes out.
00:06:07But, we work hard.
00:06:10There's not friggin' a million dollars in my bank, ever.
00:06:13I borrow my little brother's car,
00:06:14and it's a friggin' 2001 Parola.
00:06:17Woo!
00:06:19This is an amazing opportunity, and we're so thankful.
00:06:25Well, don't speak too soon, Michelle.
00:06:28All right, let's go.
00:06:28What do you need? Another coat?
00:06:30Yeah, I was going to try and do one more coat on the ceiling.
00:06:32As competitive couple Nathan and Julia...
00:06:34Have you got to pay the door? Yes, I am.
00:06:36...are pulling out all stops in their kids' bedroom and bathroom.
00:06:40Watch it, ready?
00:06:41What do you think of the stripes?
00:06:43Crisp.
00:06:44On paper, it sounds like a lot, but now it's come together and I love it.
00:06:48I genuinely love this room. I reckon it's awesome.
00:06:50She went bold on the decision, on the planning.
00:06:53I got to come to site today and got to see what she'd done.
00:06:56What do you think of the maroon wall?
00:06:58It's very cool.
00:06:59But when Jules is in Renault mode, it is a force to be reckoned with.
00:07:04I'm so competitive in nature, and the majority of the time I don't lose.
00:07:08Sometimes I can come across intimidating.
00:07:10She's on a funny phone back against the wall.
00:07:12I don't think anyone wins these competitions by playing it safe.
00:07:17We've got three girls.
00:07:18Having a family is expensive.
00:07:20If we're in need for something new in the house,
00:07:22we have no issues buying something second hand.
00:07:24It would be very nice to not have to look at the bank account.
00:07:26We're doing this for the girls.
00:07:28That's giving us the ability to dig deep to come out of this on top.
00:07:33Guys, two and a half hours to go.
00:07:36Two and a half hours.
00:07:37We're running it fine.
00:07:38Running it tight.
00:07:40Come on.
00:07:41That's cool.
00:07:42This can go on the front lawn as well.
00:07:44There's a lot to do.
00:07:45It's insane.
00:07:46Insanity is also raining over at house two.
00:07:50Where's the floor mirror going?
00:07:51In here.
00:07:52This is the part where the beds are.
00:07:54Weird.
00:07:55Where's the bed?
00:07:58Isaac.
00:07:59Yeah.
00:07:59You ready?
00:08:01This is the scary one.
00:08:03With Greek best mates Frankie and Isaac tackling the bedroom and bathroom.
00:08:09The bathroom has dominated their difficult week.
00:08:12Ah, the week.
00:08:13This week.
00:08:14This week.
00:08:15What week?
00:08:15Where are you going week?
00:08:16Where's the week, man?
00:08:17That wasn't a week.
00:08:17Where's the week gone?
00:08:18Where was it?
00:08:19I don't want to talk about the week.
00:08:20Who's the week?
00:08:20The curse.
00:08:21It wasn't a week.
00:08:21It was a curse.
00:08:23I never thought something like this would be so difficult.
00:08:26The tilers.
00:08:27The plumbers.
00:08:28The colour scheme.
00:08:29It was horrible.
00:08:31The curse kept coming, but we kept fighting back.
00:08:35Because that's who we are.
00:08:39I've had my business for probably about six years.
00:08:42Probably the first three years, I reckon, Isaac was with me.
00:08:44Working together side by side every day.
00:08:49Man, it's energy.
00:08:50We have a morning dance we do as well.
00:08:52Oh, yeah, we do.
00:08:53I'm slaying the street.
00:08:54I'm like, wait, she just swayed.
00:08:56We've got random neighbours up the road and it's like, why aren't these two guys just swaying
00:09:01in the street?
00:09:02To renovating.
00:09:02Best luck to us.
00:09:05We don't want to lose.
00:09:07Me and my fiancé, we've looked around and we've seen the crisis of everything and you're
00:09:12drowning.
00:09:13It's insane and I really, really, really, really wish I could move out of home so that
00:09:17me and my fiancé can start our future and build a living.
00:09:22So just the last little hurdle.
00:09:24But that last little hurdle.
00:09:27Are we just taking it in or not?
00:09:28Is a big one.
00:09:31That could finally make the boys crack.
00:09:34Shower screen.
00:09:34Jump out of the way, please.
00:09:36That's it.
00:09:37Down, boys.
00:09:38Down.
00:09:39Down, down.
00:09:40Yeah, yeah.
00:09:42Oh my god.
00:09:45What was that?czy
00:09:47pkie what? No.
00:09:53That hit
00:09:53the woods. Must have
00:09:55when we place it down. Say please,
00:10:01we have to put that again into the wall.
00:10:06We're going to lift it and stand it there.
00:10:08Be very gentle when we put it down.
00:10:11I saw one too big.
00:10:14Leave the cardboard down.
00:10:16Put some timbers on the top.
00:10:20Three, two, one, up.
00:10:23I don't know what I'm doing.
00:10:28What about that?
00:10:29Careful, careful.
00:10:30Careful, careful.
00:10:32I haven't chipped on the timbers before.
00:10:35You going down, gentle?
00:10:36Going down.
00:10:37Slowly.
00:10:38You down?
00:10:39Yep, I'm down.
00:10:40Slide, slide.
00:10:41Push.
00:10:44We're in.
00:10:45Is that it?
00:10:45Yeah.
00:10:4690 days?
00:10:47Good job, boys.
00:10:49There's now only two hours until room reveals.
00:10:53Welcome to the mad show.
00:10:54If I spray this quickly, then I can go back to the 6,000 other things.
00:11:00That we have to do while it dries.
00:11:03Just washing maroon paint out of my hair.
00:11:08Nothing like some time pressure, hey?
00:11:11I'm so tired.
00:11:13You're tired.
00:11:14Always time for this.
00:11:15Come on, Craig.
00:11:16Let's go.
00:11:17Let's go.
00:11:20With time running out, house two husband and wife, Mitch and Shaz...
00:11:25OK.
00:11:26..are feeling the pressure...
00:11:28Sounds very bad.
00:11:29..as Mitch handles the grunt work...
00:11:31Amazing.
00:11:32..interior designer Shaz styles their kids' room
00:11:35..and multi-functional family room.
00:11:38So, this one centred between this and the end of this.
00:11:48I'm the ideas man.
00:11:50He is the doer.
00:11:53Those are our roles.
00:11:54Yep.
00:11:54I had picked out some colours that I thought would work really nicely.
00:11:58Being an interior designer definitely gives you an idea
00:12:00of the fundamentals of what makes a great space.
00:12:04Shaz's got a real good eye for that stuff.
00:12:06Sick tricks!
00:12:08And we definitely want to win this competition massively.
00:12:11Come on!
00:12:11Because in this economy, us and most people, I guess,
00:12:16are really struggling living week to week.
00:12:18We want to be able to learn what we always promised him.
00:12:21Yeah.
00:12:22Go, bud.
00:12:23Just an amazing childhood.
00:12:24Yeah.
00:12:28Oh, yes!
00:12:29Mitch is going to be excited to watch the footy on this.
00:12:32But as the TV goes in,
00:12:35it's her ping pong table that has her worried.
00:12:39I thought at the start of the week
00:12:40that a ping pong table would be a great idea
00:12:42and now I'm like,
00:12:43that was a crazy idea.
00:12:45Yeah, why did we do that?
00:12:45Why are we doing a ping pong table?
00:12:49Hour and a half, everyone!
00:12:53Hour and a half to go.
00:12:56Vibe is a rush.
00:12:58What a vibe.
00:13:00Rush vibe.
00:13:01Getting all the stuff in the room, number one.
00:13:03And then number two,
00:13:04having enough time to actually style
00:13:06and choose what we want to put in.
00:13:09That's my main concern.
00:13:10But with no time for any mistakes...
00:13:13You can just see a little spot here.
00:13:15A new nightmare has cropped up
00:13:16with Emma and Michelle's untested rust wall,
00:13:19as builder Harley notices a distinct lack of skirting board,
00:13:24leaving the bottom of the wall looking unfinished.
00:13:27Yeah, we took it off.
00:13:29We had them on.
00:13:30It really closes off the fireplace.
00:13:32It shortens it.
00:13:33The only trouble is, it hasn't been set up that way.
00:13:35Obviously, we were always going to do a skirt on there.
00:13:37So, what have you done with them?
00:13:39I know you saw them.
00:13:39I try to throw them in the bin,
00:13:41but I can try and recycle them.
00:13:43Did you already throw them in the bin?
00:13:44Yeah, I was like, nah, just in case.
00:13:47So, Emma and Michelle running around trying to clean up
00:13:50when they don't know what they're cleaning up.
00:13:52It's a bit annoying.
00:13:54I did put all the rubbish out last night.
00:13:56Bloody hell.
00:13:57Sorry, guys.
00:13:58Jesus, Emma, we've already got them on our wrong side.
00:14:01Just to be honest, they often just get in the way.
00:14:06Sorry, doll.
00:14:07Is it really this much of a nuisance dolly?
00:14:10Yeah, I reckon you need them, yeah.
00:14:11Oh, here.
00:14:12Is that that there?
00:14:13No.
00:14:15We've not found the skirtings, so it's not great.
00:14:19Sorry, this was my bad.
00:14:20Let's not throw shit out until we know we don't need it, eh?
00:14:24We're just going to keep it as it is
00:14:26and hopefully we're not judged accordingly.
00:14:29Well, this is a great way to start the day, isn't it?
00:14:31We probably need to be wiser in our decision-making.
00:14:37Could have gone a singlet today.
00:14:40The sweat is real.
00:14:43No.
00:14:43We need long becks in the middle.
00:14:46No!
00:14:49Safety.
00:14:49Ladder.
00:14:50Bang!
00:14:51All right, let's go.
00:14:52We've got about an hour to go,
00:14:53so we also need to clean up as well.
00:14:54So, keep doing what you're doing, boys,
00:14:56but we need to get in here very, very soon.
00:14:58And with the clock ticking,
00:15:01billionaire Adrian Portelli rolls in
00:15:03for the first inspection of his purchased homes.
00:15:11I give away house.
00:15:14We bought two homes in Baleen.
00:15:17relics of the 70s to renovate them.
00:15:21We're going to transform these homes.
00:15:24They're going to be completely unrecognisable
00:15:26and then we're going to give them away.
00:15:29Good.
00:15:32What is going on?
00:15:34Can you believe this?
00:15:36What the hell?
00:15:38Where have our houses gone, Chris?
00:15:40Unbelievable, isn't it?
00:15:41How are you?
00:15:42Good.
00:15:42We've got a permit for that.
00:15:43They're pretty brutal.
00:15:44Nah.
00:15:45We make our own permits here.
00:15:47I'm surprised you did not drive straight past.
00:15:50It's completely changed.
00:15:51So, they've gone up.
00:15:52The interior's been gutted.
00:15:54And, oh my God, they have been so busy.
00:15:56Ready to have a look?
00:15:57They don't know you're coming, by the way.
00:15:58Don't they?
00:15:59All right.
00:15:59Well, let's surprise them.
00:16:02Oh, Nate, there's a coffee table outside.
00:16:04Want to go get that?
00:16:06Shimmy, shimmy, shimmy.
00:16:08Excellent.
00:16:08You guys are flattered.
00:16:09Hello.
00:16:09What the hell?
00:16:11You guys are on the final countdown,
00:16:12so we don't want to get in the way.
00:16:13Mate.
00:16:13Oh, wow.
00:16:14Does it look like the same house?
00:16:16All right, Jules.
00:16:16Are we looking?
00:16:17Looking good.
00:16:18What else needs to be done?
00:16:19Well, it's just cleaning touches now.
00:16:21Can you straighten that down, my pommies?
00:16:23Oh, look at this.
00:16:25Oh, he doesn't even need a stick letter.
00:16:28He broke it.
00:16:28He broke it.
00:16:29He broke it.
00:16:30He broke it.
00:16:30Please don't touch anything else.
00:16:33Um, you need to get moving.
00:16:34Get out, then.
00:16:35Mum, just finish the bedroom hall.
00:16:39Emma, you look flat out.
00:16:41Yeah.
00:16:41We're not finished yet.
00:16:43Look at this wall.
00:16:44This is crazy.
00:16:46We did it last night at 3am.
00:16:47Did you actually?
00:16:48Yeah.
00:16:49I hate to ruin the party.
00:16:50You know you have 40 minutes left.
00:16:51Yeah.
00:16:51No, we're good.
00:16:52We're great.
00:16:53We're gonna get it done.
00:16:54This is chaos, Chris.
00:16:56I'm not sure where the confidence is coming from,
00:16:58around being ready in 40 minutes.
00:17:00Adrian, can you make Queen bed?
00:17:02No, he can't.
00:17:03Yes?
00:17:04I'm actually really good at this.
00:17:05Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
00:17:06I like hospital corners.
00:17:08Adrian, now's not the time to be making a bed.
00:17:11Shove it in.
00:17:12Let's go.
00:17:12No, no.
00:17:12You don't have time for hospital corners.
00:17:14Let's go.
00:17:15Alright, we're good.
00:17:16Let's get moving, guys.
00:17:17Come on, 40 minutes.
00:17:18Did you say 40 minutes?
00:17:2040 minutes.
00:17:21Yes.
00:17:21Yep, thank you.
00:17:22Oh, my God.
00:17:23Alright, thank you.
00:17:25While we leave house one to focus on their much-needed finishing touches...
00:17:29I'm feeling a little stressed.
00:17:31Under the pump.
00:17:32It's time to look if house two are any closer to the finish line.
00:17:36Alright, I can come through here.
00:17:38This house.
00:17:40Oh!
00:17:42That's not gonna tickle.
00:17:44Hello.
00:17:46You're too tall, bloke.
00:17:48I love being short.
00:17:50Whoa.
00:17:51Hello?
00:17:51Hey, hey, hey.
00:17:52What's going on?
00:17:54How are you, mate?
00:17:55How are you, mate?
00:17:55How are you?
00:17:56Wow.
00:17:57This is a big space.
00:17:58Still a bit of cleaning up to do here.
00:18:00There is some cleaning up to do.
00:18:01There's some styling to do.
00:18:02We're running out of time.
00:18:04It was 30 minutes.
00:18:0530 minutes.
00:18:07Jazz, you better hurry up.
00:18:09Okay.
00:18:09Good luck.
00:18:10Yeah, mate.
00:18:12Boys!
00:18:13Oh, no.
00:18:14Look who he is.
00:18:15What's going on, Jens?
00:18:16How are we?
00:18:17What's going on?
00:18:19Hey!
00:18:20How are you, guys?
00:18:21Have you seen our toilet?
00:18:22Two and a half thousand dollar toilet.
00:18:24That toilet is the most expensive, smart toilet.
00:18:27Hurry up.
00:18:27Hurry up.
00:18:27I need cleaners.
00:18:28I need a couple of boys cleaning.
00:18:30I bet you wouldn't clean toilets, Chris.
00:18:33Look at this, mate.
00:18:34I'd do it.
00:18:35I'd get in there.
00:18:37I'm not sure that we really have time for this, so good luck, mate.
00:18:42Thanks, lads.
00:18:42Just hurry it up a little bit, huh?
00:18:44Appreciate the help.
00:18:45Thanks, guys.
00:18:47I'm going to watch this now.
00:18:48Watch your head.
00:18:49Emma!
00:18:49Look at the mess on the shelf.
00:18:51What do you need, Dom?
00:18:51I need twin decks.
00:18:52Are we putting cushions on the bench?
00:18:54Stop asking me questions.
00:18:55Sorry.
00:18:55Just switch now.
00:18:59What?
00:18:59I don't think we have time for your finesse today, love.
00:19:02When they tell me to us down, I'll be ready, baby.
00:19:06Frank, how do you lift a blind?
00:19:08Top drawer, there's a button.
00:19:10A book.
00:19:10A book, a book, a book, a book.
00:19:12Ten!
00:19:13Nine!
00:19:13Eight!
00:19:15Seven!
00:19:16Six!
00:19:17Five!
00:19:18Four!
00:19:19Three!
00:19:19Two!
00:19:20One!
00:19:21Done!
00:19:26Two!
00:19:27One!
00:19:28One!
00:19:28Two!
00:19:28Ah!
00:19:29Oh!
00:19:30Oh, you're so sweaty.
00:19:32And I'm so sweaty.
00:19:33Wow.
00:19:34Look at that.
00:19:35We did it.
00:19:37Oh.
00:19:38Wow.
00:19:39I'm so...
00:19:40Oh, my God.
00:19:42I've learnt a lot this week.
00:19:44We thought we were just coming to do the fluffy bits at the end.
00:19:47Yeah, the physical labour has been...
00:19:48The physical...
00:19:49We had no idea.
00:19:50Like, even painting.
00:19:52That's the hardest job in the world.
00:19:53I mean, my rust feature all worked.
00:19:56Really proud.
00:19:57Looks great.
00:19:58And I think the judges will say that.
00:20:01Oops.
00:20:01I can see a little stake up there.
00:20:05Coming up, the stakes are already high.
00:20:09Oh, wow.
00:20:10What a week, hey?
00:20:11But Adrian Portelli has a surprise.
00:20:14I'm upping the ante.
00:20:16Oh, my God!
00:20:19There it is.
00:20:21And...
00:20:22Australia's most revered critics arrive.
00:20:24Led by design guru, Neil Whittaker.
00:20:27I can't believe that!
00:20:29Wow.
00:20:30Stand by for jaw-dropping reveals.
00:20:33Oh!
00:20:33Come in, guys.
00:20:35This is cool.
00:20:35This is so cool.
00:20:37I think you both like it.
00:20:39I really like it.
00:20:40Plus, face-to-face judgements.
00:20:42Quite frankly...
00:20:45We don't care.
00:21:01We're in Bulleen, Melbourne.
00:21:03And billionaire Adrian Portelli has asked the contestants to gather outside the houses for a surprise.
00:21:14Oh, wow.
00:21:15What a week, hey?
00:21:17Can you believe it?
00:21:18You've done it.
00:21:19No.
00:21:19No.
00:21:20Not at all.
00:21:21Not at all.
00:21:21It's all a dream.
00:21:23Feels like it, I'm sure.
00:21:24A nightmare.
00:21:25Or a nightmare.
00:21:27So, Adrian, what did you think of the rooms?
00:21:30Absolutely incredible.
00:21:31I've come in here and I've been very, very impressed.
00:21:35I would not even picture that they've done this in a week.
00:21:38It is unbelievable what you guys have managed to do.
00:21:40And to think that two Australian families are going to win these homes.
00:21:44You should all be proud of yourselves.
00:21:46And I'm that impressed, I've brought with me a little gift.
00:21:51To go to the room that I thought was the best.
00:21:54To put into your renovation for next week.
00:21:59$10,000.
00:22:00Yay!
00:22:02No way.
00:22:05So, the team that have done the room that I thought was the best.
00:22:10And wins $10,000 to add to their renovation kitty is...
00:22:18Shaz and Mitch.
00:22:21Well done, you two.
00:22:22Well done.
00:22:24Here you go, guys.
00:22:25Catch!
00:22:26Yay!
00:22:30I can't wait to see their rooms now.
00:22:32Congratulations.
00:22:33Now we know who to come to for a loan.
00:22:35The ping pong table in the living room.
00:22:38Who would have thought to put that in there?
00:22:39I absolutely love that.
00:22:41Hopefully the judges agree, but aside from the ping pong table,
00:22:44just the whole retro vibe of the room, the colours,
00:22:46everything meshed together very, very well.
00:22:48So, well done, guys, and well deserved.
00:22:51Excellent job, guys.
00:22:53Congrats.
00:22:54Huge for the budget next week.
00:22:56That is a huge amount of money for us to have extra.
00:22:5810K cash to be able to throw in to really zhuzh up the next room is awesome.
00:23:03Yeah.
00:23:06Mitch and Shaz.
00:23:07It's a competition.
00:23:08It's all design.
00:23:10You can't win everything.
00:23:11So, yeah, it's their turn and we'll just, yeah, we'll wait out.
00:23:15100%.
00:23:15Now, I should probably say that is not the only reason that Adrian is here today.
00:23:21I love where these houses are heading and I'm thinking what can I do to make sure these
00:23:27houses are exceptional?
00:23:29100%.
00:23:30While I'm impressed with these rooms, I want to know that you'll continue to put your blood,
00:23:35sweat and tears into these houses.
00:23:38100%.
00:23:38I need every detail to go from good to great.
00:23:43So, I'm going to make it a bit more interesting.
00:23:45I'm upping the ante.
00:23:47Oh.
00:23:48Hell.
00:23:49I've decided to up the prize money to a quarter of a million dollars.
00:23:58There it is.
00:23:59Oh, my God.
00:24:03$250,000.
00:24:05Nothing screams more motivation than that amount of money.
00:24:08Yeah.
00:24:09$250, baby.
00:24:10Yep.
00:24:11That's what's in his vocabulary right now.
00:24:13$250.
00:24:14That's it.
00:24:15No other words.
00:24:16How's two for the win?
00:24:17You haven't won it yet.
00:24:19Well, teams, a quarter of a million dollars, huh?
00:24:24Wow.
00:24:24You are now a lot closer than you were before.
00:24:28But now what might be the biggest test of all, the judges are about to arrive and to walk
00:24:34through your rooms.
00:24:36Perfect.
00:24:37Which means you guys need to get out of here.
00:24:39Go and have a good rest.
00:24:41Put your feet up.
00:24:42You've earned it.
00:24:42Well done.
00:24:44We'll see you tonight.
00:24:45See ya.
00:24:46Thanks.
00:24:46Well, nothing like a quarter of a million dollars to get the competition fired up.
00:24:51And who wins it?
00:24:53That will come down to our judges.
00:24:57Welcome, Neil Whittaker.
00:24:59One of the country's most influential voices in design.
00:25:03With decades of experience shaping how Australians style their homes.
00:25:08From the pages of our leading design magazines.
00:25:11To screens across the country.
00:25:18I guess I've been in this industry for a very long time.
00:25:23I probably have seen it all.
00:25:26And then some.
00:25:28With all my years as a magazine editor and the years I've spent in television.
00:25:32What I love doing most is helping people find their style in terms of personality and innovation.
00:25:40Because these contestants can do whatever they want.
00:25:43But what remains to be seen is if they will.
00:25:51Julia Green, interior stylist, author and founder of her own design studio.
00:25:57For 15 years she's been creating beautiful homes and inspiring spaces.
00:26:03I'm about to start up a revolution.
00:26:06When I walk into a room that's well designed.
00:26:09I literally start to feel the excitement rise in my chest and my heart beats faster.
00:26:16And I just want to do a happy dance.
00:26:18It is so good when you can connect with the story that a home is telling.
00:26:23My best advice for contestants would be to really think about what their own style is.
00:26:29We're all about embracing individuality, originality.
00:26:33Go bold.
00:26:34Go hard.
00:26:37And view.com.au's property expert, Simon Cohen.
00:26:42Founder and CEO of Australia's largest buyers agency.
00:26:46With access to the most luxurious properties money can buy.
00:26:51I've spent all day, every day, in Australia's best homes.
00:26:56From the most high profile, successful people in the country, I know property.
00:27:01If I love something, you're going to know it.
00:27:04If I hate something, you're going to know it.
00:27:05And if people are scared of that, then they should be afraid and nervous.
00:27:12I can't believe it.
00:27:13They've gone up already.
00:27:14Yeah.
00:27:14I can't believe that.
00:27:16Wow.
00:27:17That's incredible.
00:27:17I cannot get over how there were these two little shacks.
00:27:22Yes.
00:27:22I know.
00:27:22And now they're these monstrous homes.
00:27:25That is just crazy that that has happened so quickly.
00:27:28We need to get in there and see.
00:27:29Well, I cannot wait to see what's inside.
00:27:31Fancy.
00:27:31Come on, let's go inside.
00:27:31Let's go.
00:27:33Wow.
00:27:35The first team up for inspection is our Maltese Terriers, Emma and Michelle.
00:27:41This week, they tackled the bedroom and living room.
00:27:45It's hard to think we're just going modern.
00:27:48Yeah.
00:27:48Honestly, like, I want it to really elevate it now.
00:27:52Their strategy was simple.
00:27:55Go Lux.
00:27:56Hi.
00:27:56OK, so do we want impact or wow factor?
00:27:59Yeah.
00:27:59It's just more time and more labour.
00:28:01I don't mind that.
00:28:03I'm sorry.
00:28:03Yeah.
00:28:03It's a living room.
00:28:04But their champagne and caviar tastes quickly got a reality check.
00:28:09Brace yourself.
00:28:10Oh, God.
00:28:11Run your eyes over that.
00:28:13$23,000.
00:28:15We're just going to have to do a different look.
00:28:16A budget blower.
00:28:17When you say it can happen, please don't say that if you're not going to go through with
00:28:22that.
00:28:22Force them to get on the tools.
00:28:24OK, let's talk about this rusted bag.
00:28:26If we keep getting asked questions, we are not going to get this done.
00:28:30I'm deadly serious.
00:28:31And their DIY rust feature wall.
00:28:34So heavy.
00:28:35Push them to the brink.
00:28:36No one in their right mind would ever want to do this.
00:28:39I normally pay people to do this shit.
00:28:42But will the painting pain pay off?
00:28:46Interesting.
00:28:47Oh.
00:28:48Oh.
00:28:50Do you want the house store?
00:28:52I could take you to the first, second, third floor.
00:28:56What?
00:28:57It's like a time warp.
00:28:59Are we really in the same room?
00:29:01I just want you to come inside.
00:29:04We've gone from Flintstones to 2025.
00:29:09At the speed of light.
00:29:11Yes.
00:29:14This is super luxury.
00:29:16I cannot believe it.
00:29:18Sorry.
00:29:18I can't take my eyes off of the fact that the TV is ginormous.
00:29:25I'm not looking at the TV.
00:29:27I'm more interested in what's happening around me.
00:29:31I want to touch everything.
00:29:33Well, you can.
00:29:34You can.
00:29:34Wow.
00:29:35I want to sit in that chair.
00:29:38There's a lot happening around me.
00:29:39I can't quite put my finger on it.
00:29:42I can't quite put my finger on it.
00:29:42There's an art deco light.
00:29:43Yeah.
00:29:44There's fluffy modern chairs.
00:29:46It's everything.
00:29:47It is.
00:29:48There's even like a little dirty martini waiting for us.
00:29:51It's an interesting aesthetic, but one thing they have got, I think, absolutely right is scale.
00:29:58Yeah, absolutely.
00:29:59I mean, that is a huge sofa.
00:30:01Yeah.
00:30:01A lot of people will come in here and say, that sofa is too long for that space.
00:30:05I actually love it.
00:30:06I'm with you.
00:30:07I think the scale's bang on.
00:30:08And the other thing that's hard not to notice is the abundance of texture.
00:30:12And I think in a room that doesn't have a lot of colour, the texture needs to work extra hard.
00:30:18And I like what I'm seeing.
00:30:21Wearing my sort of ex-magazine editor's hat, I'd be calling this kind of retro luxe, vintage luxe.
00:30:27And it's going to be interesting to see how that plays out through the whole house.
00:30:32I think the colour palette is lovely.
00:30:37I think it's very unoffensive.
00:30:40I can feel a big butt coming.
00:30:44But there's a lot going on in my opinion.
00:30:47Oh, Simon.
00:30:48That light is scaring me.
00:30:50I'm going to have nightmares about that light.
00:30:52I mean, the chandelier is a real focal point.
00:30:57To me, this is like a mid-century Italian chandelier.
00:31:01Yes, I agree.
00:31:02All fair points, guys.
00:31:04But can we just step back with me here for a second, right?
00:31:07Yep.
00:31:07Yep.
00:31:08I just cannot get my head around this wall.
00:31:17What is it? Is it a sponge painting?
00:31:19Look.
00:31:19I just don't quite understand.
00:31:21It's meant to look like oxidised metal.
00:31:22It is.
00:31:23I was going to say, they've tried to give it a patina.
00:31:25Yeah.
00:31:25It's come out very kind of yellow.
00:31:28I see so much yellow.
00:31:31I mean, there was a time in interior design, interior decoration a while ago when oxidisation
00:31:36was big.
00:31:36We were seeing it everywhere.
00:31:37But we haven't seen it for quite a long time.
00:31:40Neil, there's a reason we haven't seen it in a long time.
00:31:43Simon.
00:31:43And this is the reason.
00:31:44Simon.
00:31:45It's hideous.
00:31:47This was a big risk, right?
00:31:49A massive risk.
00:31:51I think for the first room, for our first perception of these contestants, to do this
00:31:58was massive.
00:31:59Yes.
00:32:00Yes.
00:32:01And I think they stuffed up.
00:32:31And furthermore, the lack of attention to detail, the cornices sticking out, the gap in the
00:32:40floor.
00:32:42You can see they've run out of time.
00:32:45Like, it's very obvious to me.
00:32:47I mean, that's either poor workmanship or just the clock was ticking.
00:32:50But it's not finished.
00:32:51Or both.
00:32:51Or both.
00:32:53Thoughts on the fireplace?
00:32:56You don't look happy about it, Simon.
00:32:58I feel like I have to step back.
00:33:00It's freaking me out.
00:33:01How does that actually occur?
00:33:03I think it's faux on the outside and gas on the inside.
00:33:07From a styling perspective, I think that really lets the authenticity down.
00:33:12God, you say things so nicely.
00:33:13It's foul is what you're trying to say.
00:33:15Well, I'm not a fan.
00:33:17It's a real mistake to put that timber there.
00:33:20I'm reading that as somebody looking at that fireplace after it's been put in and thinking
00:33:25it doesn't make the impact we wanted it to make because it's too small.
00:33:28We better put some timber there just to sort of make a statement.
00:33:31It really doesn't work.
00:33:33It looks very cluttered.
00:33:34It looks very messy.
00:33:35And it's made the whole thing look very ugly.
00:33:40That is a massive screw up.
00:33:43And I'm not sure I can come back from that.
00:33:49After that patchy start, let's see if Emma and Michelle can redeem themselves with their guest bedroom.
00:33:57Wow.
00:33:59Ooh.
00:34:00Ooh.
00:34:01I do it for the thrill of me.
00:34:03Okay.
00:34:04You know I really wanna think it be.
00:34:07Hey, hey, hey.
00:34:08It's something you don't wanna miss.
00:34:11Hey, hey, hey.
00:34:13Hey, baby, come on in our dreams.
00:34:15Guest room.
00:34:16Yeah, clearly guest room.
00:34:18I'm locking us in.
00:34:19Oh, gosh.
00:34:20I don't know whether that's a good or a bad thing.
00:34:22Colour palette.
00:34:23Can we start there?
00:34:25I quite like it.
00:34:27They've continued the theme here of texture.
00:34:30Beautiful door handles.
00:34:32Yes.
00:34:32I think this wood is beautiful.
00:34:35And it actually looks like this room was meant to match.
00:34:39It's actually very unoffensive.
00:34:41I find it pleasant.
00:34:42I find it easy.
00:34:43And I think they've done a nice, lovely job.
00:34:50Well, I'm gonna stir the pot.
00:34:52I find this guest room quite ordinary.
00:34:54Okay.
00:34:56For me, it misses that something else that the living room had.
00:35:01An ingredient that didn't quite come off, but was giving that room a touch of glamour that I'm not picking
00:35:09up on in here.
00:35:10This is nice.
00:35:12It's inoffensive.
00:35:13What would you have done to glam it up?
00:35:17A bit of oxidisation, I think.
00:35:19Oh, God, Neil.
00:35:19Wash your mouth out.
00:35:21A little bit goes a long way.
00:35:22No.
00:35:23Seriously, seriously.
00:35:24No.
00:35:24Okay.
00:35:25The oxidised wall wasn't executed particularly successfully, but I know where they were going with it.
00:35:32In here, we've just gone back, I think, to sort of predictable Scandi meets Japandi.
00:35:39I'd love to see a little bit of a shake-up from this safety zone that we've entered.
00:35:43So is it, for instance...
00:35:45Wall sconces instead of these pendants.
00:35:46Exactly right.
00:35:47Or is it instead of pendants that are that safe, do they reference back the glass and bring that in?
00:35:53So at least we're getting that tie through.
00:35:55The cohesion is not 100% there.
00:35:57I know it's a guest bedroom, but just take it up a notch.
00:36:02All right.
00:36:03Shall we head off to see if there's any scaries in the next room?
00:36:06I'm game if you are, Simon.
00:36:09Next, we have husband and wife Nathan and Julia, who took on the bathroom and turned the bedroom into a
00:36:17kid's room.
00:36:19They're...
00:36:20I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong.
00:36:22Well, Julia's strategy was to be bold and headstrong with her style...
00:36:27Are you talking style or practicality?
00:36:29Style.
00:36:30Leave that one to me.
00:36:31And her colour picks.
00:36:33That's the bone and that's the white.
00:36:35So they're the two we're working off as our main tile.
00:36:38Yeah.
00:36:39And then, essentially, like a plum berry.
00:36:42Because this wall is being painted, I'm going to paint this like a maroon.
00:36:45Refusing to let missing tiles...
00:36:47Yeah, we're short, so I'll need them here first thing tomorrow, otherwise we're looking at not being able to finish
00:36:51it.
00:36:52...derail her plans.
00:36:53So it's not looking likely.
00:36:55We won't get our tiles today.
00:36:56Oh.
00:36:57We're going to use this tile in that spot.
00:37:00Use those pattern tiles as our skirting tile.
00:37:03But will her daring designs pay off when the judges weigh in?
00:37:10Oh.
00:37:12Wow.
00:37:17Whoa.
00:37:18Our first bathroom.
00:37:19Wow.
00:37:20And it is a wow.
00:37:22Okay, these are different contestants now.
00:37:29You know what's hitting me straight away?
00:37:31What?
00:37:32It just feels like the quality's better.
00:37:34Like, I'm not seeing any of the unfinished, unpainted, mismatching gaps.
00:37:41Yes.
00:37:41I mean, there's a lot to like in here.
00:37:47I love that they've put a shower and a bath.
00:37:52And that bath is almost like a spa.
00:37:54I love the double basins.
00:37:56Kids can brush their teeth and get ready for school.
00:38:01But I'd love to see a vanity here with storage for a family to use.
00:38:07Face level storage.
00:38:07I just don't think this is enough.
00:38:09It's not enough.
00:38:11I think for me, the elephant in the room is this horrible colour.
00:38:17Plum.
00:38:18I'm struggling to handle that in a bathroom, which should really be retreat-like.
00:38:23You should want to come in here and feel like you want to sink in that amazing bath and relax.
00:38:29If I had to stare at that wall, I'd put sunglasses on.
00:38:33I can't cope with it.
00:38:34Neil, your thoughts on Plum?
00:38:36No, I don't have the problem that you have.
00:38:38I actually think the tiles against that colour are quite lovely.
00:38:41But I just want to see more of it.
00:38:43It feels bitty to me at the moment.
00:38:46I want to see these tiles carry on.
00:38:48Elongate.
00:38:49Yeah.
00:38:49I think that would have made the world of difference.
00:38:53I mean, if we're thinking back to the lounge and the glamour and glitz that we had going on in
00:38:57there,
00:38:58do you feel like we're standing in a room that's connected to the rest of the house that we've already
00:39:02seen?
00:39:03There is no cohesion and that is a big issue.
00:39:08Well, I think seeing one more room will really firm up our opinions of that.
00:39:12OK.
00:39:13Madam, would you like to lead the way?
00:39:14Let me take the charge.
00:39:15Our little cowgirl today.
00:39:16Woohoo!
00:39:18Don't do that again after you kneel. I can't watch that twice.
00:39:23The judges are trotting on to Nathan and Julia's kids' bedroom.
00:39:31Oh!
00:39:33Come in, guys!
00:39:35This is cool!
00:39:37Oh, this is so cool!
00:39:39Wow!
00:39:40If I'm lying here, will you take me home?
00:39:46Oh, I love it!
00:39:47Very cute.
00:39:49Look at this!
00:39:50Simon, you can have the bottom bunk and I'll have the top.
00:39:53Done.
00:39:53Are we going to be roomies?
00:39:54Yeah, let's be roomies.
00:39:56Who will you take me home?
00:39:59Who will you take me home?
00:40:01Oh, guys, this is really well done.
00:40:04I like it a lot.
00:40:06It matches.
00:40:08Look!
00:40:09Finally, stripes and stripes, they match.
00:40:13It feels fun and functional, yet also stylish.
00:40:18Yeah.
00:40:18Like, it's hard to make a kid's room stylish.
00:40:20Yes, it is.
00:40:22Even by the bed there, there's storage space, there's shelves, there's little pictures.
00:40:27I love the little hanging monkey.
00:40:29I love the swinging chair.
00:40:30Oh, you want to move in!
00:40:32It's cute.
00:40:32I want a little ladder in my bedroom.
00:40:37I'm loving the striped wall.
00:40:40Guys, do you know what?
00:40:41This is not wallpaper.
00:40:43What?
00:40:44What?
00:40:44This has been painted.
00:40:46Oh!
00:40:47Look!
00:40:47Wow.
00:40:48Goodness.
00:40:49I just assumed that was wallpaper.
00:40:51Wow.
00:40:53Unbelievable.
00:40:56Really stunning.
00:40:57It's beautiful.
00:40:59Do you know what they've done in here?
00:41:00They've created a real little world.
00:41:03I mean, any kid walking in here is going to go crazy, right?
00:41:08Absolutely.
00:41:09I literally want to sit down and start drawing.
00:41:11Go on, Simon.
00:41:12You want to see what little masterpiece you make, Picasso?
00:41:15Is that weird?
00:41:16Simon, you are weird.
00:41:18I'm going to draw my name and then we're going to the next house.
00:41:23Simon was here.
00:41:35Our judges are in Bulleen, Melbourne.
00:41:38Fresh off some very strong opinions of House 1,
00:41:41now all eyes are on House 2.
00:41:44Next up for judgement...
00:41:46Best mates, Frankie and Isaac,
00:41:49who took on the bedroom and bathroom.
00:41:53Despite claiming underdog status
00:41:55because of their minimal renovation experience...
00:41:58The underdogs.
00:41:59Yeah.
00:42:00The underdogs are here to give it a break.
00:42:01I do feel like we are the underdogs.
00:42:02Happy Sway.
00:42:04The boys started their week on a high.
00:42:08But the enormity of the task ahead soon swallowed them whole.
00:42:13You need to make your choices today.
00:42:15Does this come in 1800?
00:42:17Do you have any white marble tops?
00:42:19Do you guys have new fixture colours?
00:42:22And setback after setback...
00:42:24Pull the old ceiling gown.
00:42:26Put them to the test.
00:42:28Put them to the test.
00:42:28I may as well jump in the bin now, the way this place is going.
00:42:31Now the question remains...
00:42:33Will these underdogs' designs have bite?
00:42:41Oh!
00:42:44Ooh!
00:42:45I've been on my own for a minute.
00:42:48Is it only me out here?
00:42:51Love that tile.
00:42:52Searching for the place to begin it.
00:42:56Is it me?
00:42:57Is it you?
00:42:58Is it fear?
00:43:00Standing on the line I was given...
00:43:03Frankly.
00:43:03Skylight!
00:43:04I mean, seriously, it makes you want to sing opera.
00:43:07That's so good!
00:43:09Styling that's appropriate.
00:43:11Colour matched.
00:43:12Thought through.
00:43:13I think that the choice of mirrors, which are storage cabinets, is terrific.
00:43:19I think the boy's done good.
00:43:21High five, Neil.
00:43:22I'm with you.
00:43:24No.
00:43:26No.
00:43:27No.
00:43:28What are you saying no for?
00:43:30Simon!
00:43:31What are you talking about?
00:43:32Wow!
00:43:32I feel like I've walked into a bathroom I've walked into a thousand times before.
00:43:37I love that there's storage.
00:43:39I just think there's nothing creative about that or this bathroom.
00:43:44Oh my God, Simon.
00:43:46What planet are you from today?
00:43:48Planet Earth, babe!
00:43:49That is so not the case.
00:43:50Look at this place.
00:43:54We both don't have to love it.
00:43:56I know.
00:43:56Just so you know.
00:43:57Alright.
00:43:57I think it's really important to say that we don't all have to agree.
00:44:02I think it makes life a lot more interesting.
00:44:05I think that, Simon, you're absolutely right.
00:44:08I also have seen this sort of ripple effect a bit too much.
00:44:12But, for me, the genius in this bathroom is this.
00:44:18I've got to go in here because I want to see this beautiful tiling at close range.
00:44:25Oh yeah.
00:44:27You know what's clever here?
00:44:29They have used scale to their favour.
00:44:32So they've got lots of almost like an oversized mosaic here.
00:44:36Excellent grout choice.
00:44:37I can't explain how impressed I am with that because so many people that use small tiles like this cover
00:44:44them in a white grout and it's just so busy.
00:44:47I mean, I want these tiles in my bathroom.
00:44:50Yeah, I love them.
00:44:51I would have these at home in a heartbeat.
00:44:53Same.
00:44:53Then we look at the floor and you've got these giant format sized tiles.
00:44:58I love the floor tiles.
00:44:59I love them a lot.
00:45:01But just not in here.
00:45:04I just feel like they don't match.
00:45:06I know they're all different, but to me, they all speak to each other.
00:45:11Alright, well, onwards and upwards, my fellow judges, shall we go to the next room?
00:45:15Maybe it'll be Frankie and Isaac's guest bedroom that finally unites our judges.
00:45:22Oh.
00:45:24Oh no.
00:45:25Oh.
00:45:29Okay.
00:45:32I feel like the life's been sucked out of me.
00:45:35Oh my goodness.
00:45:43I don't know if I'm in my grandmother's room or...
00:45:46It's not good.
00:45:48It's just beige on beige.
00:45:50We've got beige carpet onto a beige rug with a beige ottoman and a beige bed head and even beige
00:45:57coloured pendants.
00:45:58No.
00:46:00You take yourself back to the bathroom and how we all felt in there compared to this.
00:46:05Mm.
00:46:05And it's a let down.
00:46:07Look, if you were a guest and you were shown into this room, you know, you couldn't complain.
00:46:11It's got a nice bed.
00:46:12It's got a desk.
00:46:13It's got somewhere to hang your clothes.
00:46:15But it's just got no vibe.
00:46:18It's got no personality.
00:46:20It's boring.
00:46:21It's boring.
00:46:21It's boring.
00:46:22It's really boring.
00:46:25The artworks.
00:46:26That is the most dull artwork.
00:46:28In a room that is very neutral, the last thing you need is a neutral artwork.
00:46:33The pendants hanging either side of the bed are lovely, but they're too small.
00:46:38Mm-hm.
00:46:38They're almost apologetic.
00:46:39Just be bigger.
00:46:41I wonder if they just ran out of time.
00:46:44They probably thought, oh, we're dividing up our time.
00:46:46You know, we'll give 75% of that time to the bathroom because bathrooms are harder to do.
00:46:50Look what happens when you do that.
00:46:52Right.
00:46:52I mean, so it's a time management issue as well as a styling issue.
00:46:55Yeah.
00:46:56The fundamentals are there.
00:46:57Yes.
00:46:57I just think visually, there's zero wow factor.
00:47:01Mm.
00:47:03There's two more rooms to see, so we've got to get our skates on, kids.
00:47:06This is going to be a hard one.
00:47:07Sure is.
00:47:11Still to come.
00:47:12This is a vibe, guys.
00:47:13I like this.
00:47:14This is such a vibe.
00:47:15I think you both like it.
00:47:16I really like it.
00:47:18But our judges don't always agree.
00:47:20What are you doing sitting at a table in here?
00:47:23Because this is a baby's room.
00:47:24Do you know what I mean?
00:47:24I don't know, Simon.
00:47:25And later, the judges face off with our teams.
00:47:28It felt quite luxe.
00:47:30It felt a little bit glam.
00:47:32Loved the sense of the unexpected.
00:47:34It was, without doubt, one of the best rooms I've ever judged on a show.
00:47:40But not everyone is celebrating.
00:47:43It really fell flat.
00:47:45Unfortunately, you let yourself down.
00:47:48It just was a mess.
00:47:58Our judges are in house two.
00:48:01And our final team up for judgement?
00:48:03Young parents Mitch and Shaz.
00:48:06Who this week turned their bedroom into a kids room.
00:48:09And also tackled the living room.
00:48:12Huge.
00:48:12It is massive.
00:48:14With a huge space to fill, Shaz's strategy was to think outside the box.
00:48:19What's going to be on this side?
00:48:20What about something cool like a ping pong table?
00:48:26A ping pong table?
00:48:27Sure.
00:48:28But Melbourne's weather forced them to redo all their insulation.
00:48:32Oh, yeah.
00:48:33So, we're probably redoing all of that.
00:48:38And dodgy cabinets also had to be remade at the 11th hour.
00:48:43I worry that it's going to look...
00:48:45A bit dodged.
00:48:46Yeah.
00:48:46I don't know if we're going to make this look good.
00:48:50However, it was teamwork that kept them going.
00:48:53Good work.
00:48:55Done.
00:48:55But will their ping pong inspired design score a game set match with the judges?
00:49:01Oh.
00:49:03Oh, now we're talking.
00:49:05Say, dance for me, dance for me, dance for me.
00:49:08Oh, oh.
00:49:09Oh, wow.
00:49:10This is cool.
00:49:11Anybody do that thing to do?
00:49:13Yes.
00:49:14And it's a cool table tennis table.
00:49:16Move for me, move for me, move for me.
00:49:17Oh, my God.
00:49:18I don't know where to look next.
00:49:20And when you're done, I'll make you do it all again.
00:49:24Say, move for me, move for me, move for me, yeah, yeah.
00:49:30When you're done, I'll make you do it all again.
00:49:32Who gave this room permission to look this good?
00:49:36This is a vibe, guys.
00:49:38I like this.
00:49:38This is such a vibe.
00:49:39I think you both like it.
00:49:41I really like it.
00:49:42It's recreational.
00:49:43You've got a TV zone and actually a TV that fits the room.
00:49:47You've got a play zone and you've got kind of like a library relaxation area.
00:49:53This is a living room that you're really going to live in.
00:49:57Like, what a multipurpose, great space for kids to hang out.
00:50:03Like, I like this room too.
00:50:06It's like the most sophisticated rumpus room you've ever seen.
00:50:09Yeah.
00:50:10You've got this real mix of styles going on.
00:50:13Yes.
00:50:14And it all ties together beautifully.
00:50:16I'm not looking at one side of the room and saying,
00:50:18what's that doing there, when I look at that side of the room.
00:50:21I love this cohesion.
00:50:24And I'm really loving this built-in joinery.
00:50:27The choice of material is really beautiful.
00:50:30Like, that gorgeous, rich wood finish really adds warmth.
00:50:37They've got a mix of textures.
00:50:39Look at that stone bench.
00:50:40Look at that tiled plinth.
00:50:43Can we just talk about how cool this is?
00:50:45Oh, yes, we can.
00:50:46I mean, it is a showstopper.
00:50:47Yes.
00:50:48The colour, the texture, the little bit of a shine it has.
00:50:52I love it.
00:50:53Let's take a load off.
00:50:55Have a seat, friends.
00:50:56For their very first room.
00:50:58Yeah.
00:50:58This is impressive.
00:51:00Somebody knows what they're doing.
00:51:01They sure do.
00:51:03Can I ask you guys a serious question?
00:51:05Yes.
00:51:06Who wants to take me on at ping pong?
00:51:08Me!
00:51:09Let's go.
00:51:09Not me.
00:51:10I love ping pong.
00:51:12You better watch out, Simon Cohen.
00:51:13You don't know what's coming your way.
00:51:15It's game on.
00:51:16You ready?
00:51:19Oh.
00:51:21Oh.
00:51:22Oh.
00:51:22Oh.
00:51:23OK, judges.
00:51:24I reckon that's enough playing.
00:51:25Challenge you later, mister.
00:51:26Sorry, loser.
00:51:28Did you call her a loser?
00:51:29If the shoe or the boot fits.
00:51:31Yes.
00:51:31We've still got Mitch and Shazza's kids' bedroom to look at.
00:51:37Oh.
00:51:39Another children's room.
00:51:41Oh-ho.
00:51:43OK.
00:51:51The minute I walk through the door, I'm getting a really nice sense of warmth.
00:51:56Mm.
00:51:56I mean, there is something quite cocooning, quite enveloping about this room that I like.
00:52:02Yeah, I agree.
00:52:03I love that they managed to fit a little study in a kid's bedroom.
00:52:07It makes it very multipurpose.
00:52:09They've very cleverly thought out practicality.
00:52:13There is different zones that kids can play.
00:52:17The attention to detail and the workmanship is really good.
00:52:21I mean, we're so used to seeing kids' rooms that are done in much more traditional pinks
00:52:27and blues and pretty patterns, whereas they've used this very contemporary, warm, neutral palette.
00:52:32This is the sort of child of that living room.
00:52:35I can see a sense of cohesion in the little choices, like the little bedside table there.
00:52:41Even that little wall sconce mimics one of the lamps that they've got in the other room.
00:52:45So I can see the references.
00:52:48I think the issue for me is I don't know whether I like the orientation of the bed and where
00:52:54it's placed.
00:52:55Yeah.
00:52:55I feel like there's all this negative space here.
00:52:58I mean, if you've got a room out there with a ping pong table, what are you doing sitting at
00:53:02a table in here?
00:53:03Because this is a baby's room, do you know what I mean?
00:53:05I don't know, Simon.
00:53:05Someone who's playing a dad isn't playing ping pong.
00:53:08I don't hide.
00:53:08My kids learn ping pong very early.
00:53:10I hope not off you, because you would have really disappointed them.
00:53:15Well, guys, it's the fun part.
00:53:18We've got to get our skates on, kids.
00:53:19This is going to be a hard one.
00:53:20Yep.
00:53:22To the scoring we go.
00:53:34After a gruelling first week in Melbourne, it's time for our couples to face our judges for the very first
00:53:41time.
00:53:42Can't take it back once it's been set in motion.
00:53:46I don't think mum and I could have done any more or given any more energy.
00:53:50What we've achieved, I'm honestly absolutely stoked.
00:53:54I wouldn't change a thing.
00:54:01Professionally and personally, we've sacrificed a lot to be here.
00:54:05So we're here to win and we're here to play hard.
00:54:09If we can start out with a bang today and take out a win, then we know we're on the
00:54:15right track.
00:54:17These professionals are judging our work.
00:54:20You'd usually work your way up to a moment like this and be judged by parents, followed by your partner,
00:54:26followed by somebody you've done a job for.
00:54:29But hey, we've gone straight to the top and let's just get judged by them.
00:54:31What a stupid thing to do.
00:54:34God knows what's coming.
00:54:44Ladies.
00:54:45Hello.
00:54:46Hello.
00:54:47Great to see you.
00:54:49Hi.
00:54:50Hello.
00:54:52Great to see you.
00:54:53Wow.
00:54:54Look at you guys.
00:54:55You all look gorgeous.
00:54:56Not in shady boots anymore.
00:54:58I know.
00:54:59Welcome everyone to your very first scoring night.
00:55:03Thanks.
00:55:05Where the competition really begins.
00:55:08So, let's meet the people who will be scoring your rooms each week.
00:55:13Your judges.
00:55:16Interior stylist, Julia Green.
00:55:22The nation's highest grossing buyer's agent.
00:55:25Yes.
00:55:26He's cashed up.
00:55:28Simon Cohen.
00:55:29Woo!
00:55:31And design icon, Neil Whittaker.
00:55:37Love Neil.
00:55:38I just love Neil.
00:55:38You admire Neil Whittaker so much.
00:55:41I just love Neil.
00:55:41Like, she's fangirling hard right now.
00:55:44So, this is how the scoring works.
00:55:47Each judge will review your rooms and score them out of ten.
00:55:53Each week those scores will be tallied up and the team who has the top score on that leaderboard at
00:55:59the end of the competition wins a life-changing $250,000.
00:56:08We're going to start with Nathan and Julia.
00:56:13You made a guest bedroom a kid's bedroom.
00:56:18Let's see how you went.
00:56:22I don't have children, but I was one once.
00:56:26And I kind of remember how important it was for my room when I was a kid to be a
00:56:32little self-contained world.
00:56:34And that's what I think a kid's room has to be.
00:56:38And that's what you guys created absolutely beautifully.
00:56:42Thank you so much.
00:56:43The minute we walked in the room, I think we all visibly sort of went, oh, didn't we?
00:56:48I loved it.
00:56:50I absolutely wanted to stay there all day long.
00:56:54Simon even sat down and wrote his name with the crayons.
00:56:57I did a bloody good job.
00:56:59You did.
00:56:59She was very proud.
00:57:01He wanted us to feel proud.
00:57:02Well done, Simon.
00:57:03I mean, you made a kid's bedroom feel upmarket.
00:57:08In my opinion, you knocked it out of the park this week with that room.
00:57:12Thank you so much.
00:57:12Big congratulations.
00:57:13Thank you so much.
00:57:15And if you're missing a monkey, he stole it.
00:57:18That was an expensive monkey.
00:57:21Alright, let's find out what the judges thought of your main bathroom.
00:57:26Now, I walked into that bathroom and immediately felt like the functionality was all there.
00:57:32I was ticking the boxes.
00:57:35But then unfortunately for me, I turned around and I caught a big chunk of plum wall with some tiles
00:57:45that I felt weren't a great marriage.
00:57:49I really need to find out from you why you made that decision.
00:57:55I don't know.
00:57:55I think...
00:57:59We tried to do something that felt safe for us but bold for other people.
00:58:03We understood that the style wasn't going to marry up with everyone and it wasn't going to be everyone's palette.
00:58:08But, yeah, wanted to try and do something that was just going to be a little bit, yeah, a bit
00:58:12bold.
00:58:15Well, the good news, guys, is I love the colour.
00:58:19I love the plum.
00:58:20Look, I'm a child of the 70s.
00:58:22It was one of the key colours of that era, which means it is very much on trend now.
00:58:27So, for me, it actually worked well.
00:58:30Then, of course, you do start to see a few little things that aren't quite right.
00:58:35I do agree with Julia on the tiling.
00:58:38You should have extended those tiles to either end of the bathroom and then it would have really popped.
00:58:44It would have really sunk.
00:58:46That was really good feedback for us but I've never felt more uncomfortable.
00:58:50We're not going to win this competition from being good at something.
00:58:53We're going to need to be great at this to win.
00:58:57Alright, now on to Emma and Michelle who are also in that house.
00:59:03We're going to start with your living room.
00:59:10Julia, what did you think?
00:59:12I really liked it.
00:59:14It felt quite luxe.
00:59:16It felt a little bit glam.
00:59:18But guys, I can't not talk about the elephant in the room.
00:59:23The oxidised wall.
00:59:28You've drawn enormous attention right to the middle of the room.
00:59:32And I don't think the finish was exactly how it probably should have been.
00:59:38Unfortunately, you let yourself down with the oxidised wall.
00:59:42But more importantly, bad finishes.
00:59:46I'm talking about the skirts.
00:59:48Yes, we knew that.
00:59:50That was...
00:59:51We've never painted before.
00:59:52No.
00:59:53And that was obvious.
00:59:56We did have the white skirts.
00:59:58The boys were running very late.
01:00:00But what you have to remember, Michelle and Emma, as you go through the competition is we don't know any
01:00:05of that.
01:00:05Yes.
01:00:06And quite frankly, we don't care.
01:00:15That wall...
01:00:17It just was a mess.
01:00:21That wall just felt like it was sponge painted.
01:00:25It just was...
01:00:30Just, yeah, I guess in a word, that whole wall and fireplace was just hideous.
01:00:41Hearing Simon say it was hideous...
01:00:44Yeah, maybe it was to him.
01:00:45It definitely wasn't nice to...
01:00:47It's...
01:00:48It's like a...
01:00:49You know...
01:00:50A punch in the face.
01:01:05Emma?
01:01:05Yes.
01:01:06You've had a lot of feedback.
01:01:08Yeah.
01:01:08How does that really feel though?
01:01:10Yeah, I mean, it's a little bit disappointing because I just know how week one it's just been learning and
01:01:16time and stress and it's discouraging.
01:01:21We just had to keep changing and it was very new to us.
01:01:24We're not used to the time constraints, but I think we're gonna get better and choose more wisely.
01:01:31You also had a guest bedroom.
01:01:41Okay, well if the living room kind of suffered from an excess of ideas, I think your guest bedroom was
01:01:50the opposite.
01:01:52It felt, in comparison, quite flat.
01:01:58It wasn't a room that had any wow factor when you walked through the door.
01:02:03And the reason I'm saying that to you is because your living room was full of it.
01:02:09We might have all been at odds with our opinions of the oxidised wall, but you had an oxidised wall.
01:02:15That's a bold design statement.
01:02:16But unfortunately, when so much depends on the sort of synergy between all these rooms in the house, you've got
01:02:25to make sure there's consistency.
01:02:27I think everyone should take note of this.
01:02:30For next week, cohesion is really important.
01:02:33You want to walk through a front door and you want to walk into every room in the home and
01:02:37you want it to feel like the same home.
01:02:39Now that doesn't mean every room should be identical.
01:02:42That's a big no-no.
01:02:43But you certainly want it to all feel like it's one style and one home and one designer did it.
01:02:54Well, house one, you've now heard all of the judges' thoughts.
01:02:57To house number two.
01:03:00And the first team the judges will be giving feedback to is...
01:03:05Frankie and Isaac.
01:03:09Looking forward to it.
01:03:10Good.
01:03:13Let's hear what Julia thought of your main bathroom.
01:03:19Boys, boys, boys.
01:03:25I loved it.
01:03:28Seriously?
01:03:29No, seriously.
01:03:30This bathroom cranked my tractor.
01:03:33I walked in there.
01:03:35What?
01:03:36What tractor you got?
01:03:38Excited me.
01:03:40She's really excited.
01:03:42The palette was bang on.
01:03:45There was so much warmth coming out of that beautiful little terracotta tile.
01:03:50And that grout choice?
01:03:51Clever, clever, clever.
01:03:53Well done.
01:03:54Thank you very much.
01:03:55Thanks.
01:03:56Thanks heaps.
01:03:57We've only ever seen soccer change rooms and soccer bathrooms.
01:04:00So we just wanted to go above that and so far so good.
01:04:05Well, it was definitely better than a soccer change room.
01:04:08That's for sure.
01:04:09But for me, unfortunately, I just felt like I had stepped into something I had stepped into a lot.
01:04:15Yep.
01:04:16I thought there was a bit too much going on.
01:04:19I liked the towels on the floor, for example, but I don't think they worked with the rest of the
01:04:26bathroom.
01:04:27Yep.
01:04:27And so it was just a little unoriginal for me this week.
01:04:32Now it's time to hear about the guest bedroom.
01:04:38I didn't feel the same way, guys, in the guest bedroom.
01:04:40I'm sorry.
01:04:41It really fell flat.
01:04:45It was beige on beige.
01:04:49Come on.
01:04:50And the bedspread colours, all the same block colours.
01:04:54The rug just was unnecessary.
01:04:56Just did not excite me at all.
01:05:01This bedroom really, really let you down.
01:05:04It was just not good at all.
01:05:06It kind of felt like my grandmother's room.
01:05:11But my grandmother had a lot more taste.
01:05:15I think that the bedroom guys suffered from a lack of confidence.
01:05:20It feels like the bedroom was a bit of an afterthought and you ran out of steam.
01:05:27I think you're right in saying that, yeah.
01:05:2970% of our time and effort was put into that bathroom.
01:05:31But in a competition like this, unfortunately, you've got to devote the same amount of attention, energy, time, creativity, ideas
01:05:40to every single room.
01:05:43That the bedroom lacked spark.
01:05:47You described yourself as the underdogs.
01:05:51That's got to go.
01:05:52If you think you're the underdogs, you'll be the underdogs.
01:05:57Get it out of your mind. You're not the underdogs.
01:05:58All right.
01:06:00Them challenging us to just trust our gut and do something crazy definitely challenges us next week.
01:06:05And that's what our guts were telling us to do.
01:06:06But our brain was like, no, don't do that.
01:06:09All right. Well, there is one last team that still needs to be judged.
01:06:13Finally.
01:06:14Mitch and Chas.
01:06:15Have somewhere to be.
01:06:17You had a guest bedroom that you transformed into a kid's bedroom.
01:06:23First up with feedback, it's Neil.
01:06:27Guys, I described your kid's bedroom as a warm cocoon.
01:06:35Yes.
01:06:36It had a good feeling.
01:06:40And I have to say that I am noticing a cohesiveness in this house.
01:06:46That, I mean, I think maybe house one could take a little bit of a lesson from house two in
01:06:51terms of cohesion.
01:06:54Okay, Julia.
01:06:55Your colour choices were beautiful.
01:06:58You know, the styling was very good.
01:07:00But you know what?
01:07:02The bed placement, not great.
01:07:04I feel like it was all pushed up into one corner.
01:07:07We were a little bit questioning it, but the location of the windows really threw us.
01:07:12So, yeah.
01:07:13Where would you have positioned the bed?
01:07:15I'd like to see it come more centred in between that wall, yeah.
01:07:19Sorry, but I actually disagree with Julia.
01:07:21I thought the placement of the bed was absolutely perfect.
01:07:26He doesn't have kids.
01:07:27Don't listen to Simon. He's got no idea what he's talking about when it comes to kids' rooms.
01:07:31Lots of people with kids that I know.
01:07:33It gave that room such great functionality.
01:07:36Great. Thank you, Simon.
01:07:37Cheers, mate.
01:07:38You also tackled the living room.
01:07:45Hmm.
01:07:47Where do I start?
01:07:50I guess I'd start by saying walking into that room, it was without doubt one of the best rooms I've
01:07:59ever judged on a show.
01:08:00Wow.
01:08:01That whole room, it just felt like Hollywood baby.
01:08:04Do you know what I mean?
01:08:04Yeah, it is.
01:08:05It was cool.
01:08:06It was, like, eccentric.
01:08:09The tones were awesome.
01:08:11It was stylish.
01:08:12It felt expensive.
01:08:14It felt luxurious.
01:08:15And you turned it into the most multipurpose, multifunctional family room.
01:08:20Whoever gets this house is going to have the house that everyone's going to want to come and hang out.
01:08:27Well done.
01:08:27I really appreciate that.
01:08:28Wow.
01:08:28Can I just say...
01:08:31That tiled bench is everything.
01:08:34Everything.
01:08:35Do you know Mitch tiled that himself?
01:08:37Mitch?
01:08:37He's never tiled before.
01:08:38He lost, like, six centimetres off his height for being bent over for so long.
01:08:42My back was dead.
01:08:44I loved it too.
01:08:47Loved the sense of the unexpected.
01:08:50I loved your room.
01:08:53It's an amazing palette.
01:08:55I honestly think it's one of the most sophisticated rooms I've seen in a very long time.
01:09:00Guys, pretty damn perfect.
01:09:02Thank you so much.
01:09:05I'm ready to die.
01:09:08She's been fangirling so hard about seeing you.
01:09:12It's like the most incredible compliment that I probably will ever receive in my life.
01:09:17Chas, please don't die yet.
01:09:18Yeah, okay.
01:09:19We've got some stuff to do.
01:09:20Finish the house.
01:09:20I can't do the rest of the house myself.
01:09:23Neil sort of inspired her to become an interior designer.
01:09:26So, to get that, I guess, reward for her work from someone she admires is well deserved.
01:09:32I'm so proud of her.
01:09:48All right.
01:09:49Let's get to the all-important scoring, shall we?
01:09:53Each judge will give you a score out of 10, based on both of your rooms.
01:09:58Those scores add up each week, and the team with the most points at the end of the competition
01:10:03wins a quarter of a million dollars.
01:10:08Let's get the leaderboard up.
01:10:12Julia, what is your score for Nathan and Julia's rooms?
01:10:21You clearly have a good eye for design.
01:10:24I'm just wanting a little bit more cohesion, and for that reason, I'm scoring you guys 7 out of 10.
01:10:34I think you've made a really strong start.
01:10:37I'm giving you 7.5.
01:10:41You made me feel like a kid again, and for that I score big.
01:10:44So, this week, I'm scoring you an 8 out of 10.
01:10:49So, your total score is...

01:10:56Great start.
01:10:58Now to Emma and Michelle, who took on a living room...
01:11:03..and a guest bedroom in House 1.
01:11:07Emma and Michelle...
01:11:11..I know that you guys can do better.
01:11:14You've got to pay attention to those details.
01:11:17And so, for that reason, I'm giving you both a 6 out of 10.
01:11:22Excellent effort trying to introduce something bold and different.
01:11:26For that reason, I'm giving you a 7.5 out of 10.
01:11:33I'm scoring you a 7 out of 10.
01:11:37That brings your total to...
01:11:4020.5.
01:11:43Just behind Nathan and Julia.
01:11:49Of course, it's a little bit heartbreaking.
01:11:51Especially week one.
01:11:52And, you know, it was just so full on for us.
01:11:56All we can do is hone in, learn, listen, and get better next week.
01:12:02Alright, let's head over to house number two.
01:12:04Frankie and Isaac.
01:12:07You took on a guest bedroom...
01:12:11..and the main bathroom.
01:12:13So, Julia, what are you going to score the boys?
01:12:16Boys.
01:12:18That bathroom saved you.
01:12:20I scored you guys 7.5.
01:12:24Guys, you are underdogs no more.
01:12:27I'm giving you 7 out of 10.
01:12:30This week I've got no choice but to score you a...
01:12:36..6 out of 10.
01:12:39That brings your total score to 20.5.
01:12:43I'll be equal last.
01:12:47For our final round of scores, we go over to Mitch and Chaz.
01:12:57Mitch and Chaz.
01:12:59That was a really, really strong start.
01:13:05I think you delivered a cool, contemporary aesthetic with serious finesse.
01:13:11I'm giving you 8 out of 10.
01:13:14I'm giving you 8 out of 10.
01:13:16Because of your exceptional work, a 9 out of 10.
01:13:24That brings your total score to 25 out of 30.
01:13:30And shoots you straight to the top of the leaderboard.
01:13:33Well done.
01:13:37How do you feel, top of the leaderboard in week one?
01:13:40I can't believe you guys loved it.
01:13:42Thank you so much.
01:13:43I've been panicking this whole time, like,
01:13:45No, the whole thing is awful.
01:13:47What were we thinking?
01:13:48Nobody likes ping pong.
01:13:50Turns out they do.
01:13:52To know that we're on the right path.
01:13:54They're loving what we're doing.
01:13:55We've just got to keep this up.
01:13:56And to be honest, like, we've just got to up the ante now.
01:13:59And make sure that we stay on top.
01:14:01Because I'm telling you right now, those other teams,
01:14:03they're going to be looking at us and coming hard.
01:14:06Well, congratulations to the two of you.
01:14:09Cheers, mate.
01:14:10And you are closer than anyone to that $250,000.
01:14:16But to all of you, remember, each week,
01:14:20every single point counts towards that final total score.
01:14:25So, those at the top, you must maintain momentum.
01:14:29Those at the bottom,
01:14:33you need to smash it out of the park.
01:14:36I'm upset that we didn't deliver.
01:14:38It's definitely devastating.
01:14:39And really hope that we never, ever have to hear the word hideous again.
01:14:50Next time on My Renault Rules...
01:14:52You want to choose this week, we choose next week.
01:14:55The gloves are off.
01:14:57I'm not getting called hideous again.
01:14:59And the fight is on.
01:15:01Look at the size of our zone.
01:15:02No.
01:15:03The battle lines have been drawn.
01:15:05To me, those paints look exactly the same.
01:15:07No, no.
01:15:08I painted them both on my arm.
01:15:10It's almost like she thought we were copying her.
01:15:12And I didn't like that accusation.
01:15:15With $250,000 on the line...
01:15:18They'll either love it or they'll hate it.
01:15:20The pressure...
01:15:21...has only just begun.
01:15:25Build a house, they said.
01:15:27It'll be fun, Liz.
01:15:28Build a three-story house.
01:15:29Yeah, Isaac and Fran...
01:15:31No worries.
