00:25belaya better known as hulk hogan died today after suffering cardiac arrest at his home in
00:30clearwater florida hogan's manager tells us that he passed away surrounded by family
00:38his wild personality pumped up physique and handlebar mustache made in the face of professional
00:45wrestling his legacy also comes with controversy this won't surprise you but i used to watch him
00:51every day after school like a lot of kids right yeah but unlike a lot of superheroes superman batman
00:56you couldn't touch and feel him he was tangible to a lot of people they're very sad to see their
01:01legend their childhood hero gone in what seems like such a sudden way
01:33oh that's the hardest part standing up old people take a long time to get going
01:48i was the world's champion i had this crazy gym over the years we've kind of scaled down to the
01:56to the geritol equipment here
02:04i feel okay but it's a pain in the butt you know because i have my son take the tops
02:09off water
02:10bottles all the time for me because i can't turn them kind of embarrassing in a little way
02:16but it's all good huh ain't that bad could be worse i don't know it's part of the deal man
02:22you know keep keeps me humble keeps me very grateful my mind i still think like i'm 35 or 40
02:29years
02:30old but as soon as i look in the mirror i go who the hell's that get down here it's
02:35like the only real
02:37piece of my life once i get in that ring i wouldn't worry about kids wives bills problems legal criminal
02:49any type of problems
02:54but i don't have that anymore you know in wrestling you should be remembered from all the wars you've
02:59been and everything you've done
03:04and uh a lot of that's been taken away in the last 20 years was there a sinister side to
03:11his success
03:11today the wwe announced they were dropping hogan paul coven fired by the wwe the company i think he's
03:18a liar i think he's a coward there's certainly some things that you would want to be remembered for more
03:25than others right
03:31yeah of course
03:39i think people don't know the truth who was this guy really let's see if it's hot in the building
03:44uh that's what i'm there too
03:49i actually believe in what i'm doing and the people get behind that man they get behind me they know
03:53that
03:53i try and say my prayers eat my vitamins if you say your prayers and eat your vitamins man

06:10let's see if i can get to another day and listen to myself talk good grief
06:16moments away makeup and hair please i'm here i can do this
06:22a couple frizzies here hulk thank you dear
06:27fans recognize hulk hogan as a hero he's bigger than life a real hero who gives his all for all
06:33the right reasons do you consider yourself a hero i don't consider myself a hero at all
06:41but i'm very aware now after all these years what that hulk hogan presence means
06:48um you know to the fans it's not a mere moral man i was a superhero hulk hogan when i
06:56had my stature
06:58the hulk hogan character is over the top it's a fake character you know but hopefully people can
07:04understand that someday man i say my prayers take my vitamins and everything i do is positive but yeah
07:10it's two different people you know it's like me playing dracula you know i don't come home and bite
07:15my wife in the neck and suck the blood out of my kids necks you know but duh if you
07:19want to believe
07:20that go ahead when i come in the house the headband comes off the bald heads there and my wife
07:26calls
07:26me terry terry why do you always have to do that terry's not going to leave this part out we're
07:33going
07:33to take some movies terry and you're going to make a video there were only a handful of people that
07:38knew
07:38him as terry i knew him deeply as himself oh my god look at this we're always tan i turned
07:44terry on
07:45to a tanning bed he didn't even know what they were and he had to stay tan for work oh
07:49terry's naked
07:50you've done it all you've broken every code the fans just liked believing that hulk was like superman
08:06i know him like i mean when you're with somebody that long too thick and thin good and bad tired
08:12happy you know you you learn that person very well
08:19and i was always the one with the camera this is the uh greatest wall because the greatest person
08:26is out in this wall when i met terry and i asked him hey do you have family and he
08:31laid out his
08:32situation when i was to show these people the refrigerator that took me from a mere 196 pounds
08:39when i was 12 years old to a wall thing 305 pounds i grew up in florida south tampa
08:47we were broke i hated it you know especially you know watching how my dad slaved in the sun
08:55as a construction worker
08:59as a kid i made a decision that financially i would never live like that so we got pete bolea
09:07my dad was that old hard school italian you know and he was a little rough on me that's for
09:13sure they
09:14weren't the type of parents that would tell you they love you you know that would never happen
09:18terry was a mistake type child they had alan and then eight years later had terry
09:25my older brother alan well he was the tough guy alan was my dad's favorite he's always talking about how
09:31strong he was and he would just tell me you know you're not like your brother you know i didn't
09:37understand that i always had a big chip on my shoulder but you know i hated confrontations
09:45he wasn't the loudmouth you see on tv he was very soft-spoken shy no i wasn't always this confident
09:52when did that when did that change
09:56on the weekends florida championship wrestling would come on the tv back then
10:01i've never seen anything like that
10:11i had no idea that this existed i was probably eight or nine years old when i first went in
10:17person
10:18they had these great characters the conflict between good and bad how into it the fans were that were
10:25loyal dedicated fans i love it i love it it was this love and energy that they were all getting
10:32there i could feel it man and the one guy that really hooked me was the american dream dusty rose
10:39this whole rap real descent the rasp of dad my new flandango household i'm so quick i'm so fast
10:48tell you fuck is nothing but a power the energy will just drag you up out of any hole i
10:53went there and
10:54all through childhood i was hooked that's what i wanted to do i wanted to be a wrestler
11:11the problem was i was scared to death of those guys
11:15most of them were 300 pounds and over and they had teeth knocked out broken noses and cauliflower ears
11:20and it scared the bejesus out of me i believe professional wrestling was completely real
11:27i knew i couldn't do it i was real fat didn't take my shirt off ever when i went to
11:34the beach because
11:35i needed a bra pretty much i was living off you know burger king and snickers bars
11:43played little league baseball but they could throw me out a second not so fat and slow so i got
11:50into a bowling
11:53but then my life changed when i realized i could make money playing music
12:01terry was a talented bass player he would have been guns and roses like he's that level
12:09i learned that i liked being in front of the crowd and being on stage but my dad was upset
12:16that i had
12:17quit school and was running around in a rock and roll band and with some weights like an idiot
12:24it led to me you know having a big blow with my parents getting kicked out of the house
12:32so few years after high school we had a little following in north tampa then all of a sudden
12:37these wrestlers are coming in the bar oh my gosh i'm on stage and here's these guys i'm scared to
12:43death
12:43the guys like superstar billy graham you know what a fist sandwich is i'm brian blair my first memory of
12:51meeting terry was when he was playing bass guitar and he would stand out so much he was in these
12:56platform
12:57heels and had jewelry on and long blonde hair suntan big muscles i mean he was the show it was
13:04if the music
13:05was good but he was like the show and one of the things that shocked me more than anything was
13:09they
13:10weren't mean to me i didn't realize they were grooming me
13:17and they took me to all the matches it's like i'm getting free
13:25and then one of the biggest nights of my life changed everything we saw steve kearns at fort homer
13:34history armory the bad guy was just waylaying his ass and the referee told him to knock it off
13:44you let go of me revenue i remember he looked right down at steve kearn i read his lips
13:50he said hit me hit me no i went what steve hit him he goes again it's again but he
13:59made this comeback
13:59from underneath i was like what i just didn't believe it i was disillusioned for about two seconds
14:07and i got over it all of a sudden the door opens and i knew i didn't have to be
14:12a tough guy to get in
14:13the business they don't want to tell you that it's not real they want you to believe that it is
14:25but people don't realize what your body goes through you get your butt kicked in professional wrestling
14:44wow i remember all too well this is where terry and i learned to wrestle it was called the dungeon
14:55i had made the decision to go for it and i just believed that i knew exactly what i had
15:02to do
15:03to run with the pack it was brutal brutal what you had to go through to get into the business
15:11the the newer guys they have no clue they have no clue i spent a year in the gym training
15:17twice a day
15:17laying in the sun all day long and like a fool i told everybody i won't be a wrestler i
15:24won't be a
15:25wrestler that's the wrong thing to do one of the teachers put his forearm in my shin and grabbed my
15:30toe
15:31snap and they broke his leg literally broke it
15:39i was living in a hotel room at the time um and i still tried to come home whenever i
15:45could but i
15:45wasn't welcome there you know my dad would go to work and run back to the house my mom would
15:53cook for
15:54me and take care of me and then i could like sleep in his bed and oh you got to
15:58get out of here and your
15:58dad's coming home take off you know my leg getting broke was minuscule compared to what he put me
16:06through so i had to go back there was no quitting for me since i got better i started showing
16:16up down
16:19that made terry want to try even harder like you're not going to keep me down
16:25he just was like a timex he took the licking and kept on ticket that's terry that's a hulkster that's
16:33him
16:39terry's first match was against me he came out with a mask on as the super destroyer and he looked
16:47dorky super destroyer
16:53terry bolea did not complete his training and immediately become hulk hogan i mean you have to
16:58pay your dues and you have to develop your persona i'm a professional wrestling historian and author
17:07and despite my youthful appearance i've been covering the sport of kings for more than 40 years
17:15terry bolea's youth and his size made you take notice he had genetic gifts and the super destroyer
17:24was masked and i believe that was deliberate i was getting beat everywhere but they didn't want people
17:28to see me getting beat i had to learn how to work in the ring this is someone who had
17:34the potential
17:35to be a notable but he wasn't there yet he was very green put the guy under a mask let
17:43him make his
17:43mistakes later on we can make him into a real character
17:55oh my god wrestling was very territorial back then like the american mob professional wrestling
18:05promoters formed an organization that would divide north america into territories you know you're supposed
18:13to stay six to seven months in each place and get your bags and move it's driving like 25 2600
18:20miles a week
18:25i was finally you know trading a real life for a wrestling life
18:32rock and roll yes sir buddy so i went up to memphis
18:40i took off the mask hit the sky and changed my name to be terry boulder
18:54i'm gonna have to buy a ticket to see my face brother coming in the ring full head of blonde
19:00hair
19:00the largest arms in the world largest back in the world he's rock solid like a boulder so it's a
19:06good
19:06name that's terry boulder 295 pounds from campers oh slam by boulder this monday night memphis daddy
19:16when i get a hold of you i'm gonna take you and bury your head right in the map brother
19:20i'm gonna teach you a little bit of a wrestling lesson a little respect to these good people around
19:24here i'm gonna put the super southern squeeze on you daddy i'm terry boulder when i get this super
19:29southern squeeze on you there's gonna be lights out for you and whoever's around and i was talking like
19:34that i mean seriously although we didn't exist yet
19:43the first time i saw hulk i really went in the wrestling business
19:47that happened years later come on in
19:52can you believe a wwe hall of famer sitting out here waiting all day for you guys to get here
19:57that's
19:57too much too much to the fans i was hulk's manager wrestling manager not real real real real manager
20:17for god's sakes you've been wearing that outfit since 1983 and you know what i'll always wear i'm
20:21with you i'm done with you let's talk to hulk hogan oh my god i don't want to talk about
20:27jimmy hart
20:30if it wasn't for two people in my life jerry lawler and hulk hogan there'd be no jimmy hart trust
20:36me on
20:37that and i really mean that i went to high school with jerry the king law back in memphis to
20:43the wrestling
20:43fans there was nobody bigger than jerry the king lawler jerry the king lawler i remember one night
20:51i went by the coliseum to see the wrestling jerry lawler goes jimmy come here come here i said what
20:56is he goes you see that guy in the ring i went yeah what do you think i went wow
21:00man unbelievable
21:01what do they call him he said jerry boulder and i went god he looks great he goes you know
21:07he asked me
21:08to manage him i said you're gonna do it king he said are you kidding me this guy will never
21:12make a
21:12dime in this business he was not very good i'll be i'll be honest with you
21:19hogan was very big of course everybody knew that but not on the same level as other wrestlers he was
21:27just kind of getting his feet wet started making eight hundred dollars a week you needed to make
21:32at least a thousand dollars to buy food and gas and pay for hotel rooms back then
21:39hulk learned a lot from baller one thing i told him you need to take a punch you don't need
21:45to take
21:45a bump you just stand there and overcome that with your size and your strength
21:54one of the greats in professional wrestling he was super green i wrestled him atlanta quite a few
22:02times in that period and the match was always about 30 seconds long maybe people out there don't
22:13realize what you're looking at daddy but you got six foot seven right here a mountain of a man
22:19i knew more about wrestling then than he ever knew in his whole life anybody out there who wants to
22:23step in the ring had a thousand dollars up for anybody who can break the golden squeeze all it was
22:47that's all he needed to do it was believable enough it was always a sight to see a guy like
22:52that just
22:52squeeze the daylights out you and throw you down on the mat and walk around he was unbeatable he was
22:59just so big he really didn't look like a human being he looked like somebody who did step out of
23:07a comic book
23:10at that point all the promoters they said oh you're bigger than the hulk a big muscular monster
23:18so that's a good name and that's where terry the hulk boulder started oh there's that big leg
23:25huge man first thing i did was i did a video standing on jerry jarrett's kitchen room table
23:34when they see this guy that they won't forget that terry boulder is the hulk let's take a look at
23:38it
23:38right now this man is not a television illusion he is not an artist's conception
23:49he is not a figment of the imagination
23:54he is real he is the hulk
24:03that made him into a superhero it really did he's the hulk it was terrible not a lot was expected
24:13from hulk hogan in terms of character he was intriguing and they wanted to see more of him
24:21he's the hulk they just showed up they put in the main event everywhere we go
24:26the character didn't really have a persona other than he was big and nasty and mean
24:39everybody's been running scared they've been feeding me this great b meat every week on tv
24:45i want the best now all these superstars they've been hiding in the eye of the storm brother i've
24:51been whipping everybody out here as i was becoming more popular all the promoters they said with your
24:56look and as big as you are you need to be in new york
25:02madison square garden is the epitome of wrestling
25:07there's a guy named vince mcmahon senior who called
25:12and he wants you to come to new york
25:17so i went up there vince mcmahon's clicking quarters looking at me i want you to come to work for
25:24me
25:24work nothing but main events and draw money all over the world i said oh really first off i would
25:31change the name it is the incredible hulk hogan and i said what is a hulk hogan what does that
25:43mean
25:45back in the day my dad gave him his name he was this big kid and my dad of course
25:49being irish decided
25:49hogan and that's a great name so why not hulk hogan it was alliterative so let's go with that
25:56but i'm a thailand
25:58vince doesn't matter to me yeah okay i'll think about it
26:05his opponent makes his madison square garden debut the incredible hulk hogan the very first match that
26:16hulk hogan ever had in madison square garden was with yours truly ted dibiase
26:35when hulk and i had that match vince mcmahon senior came to me and he said we have really high
26:43hopes for
26:44this guy i really want you to get him over as best you can putting someone over it means he's
26:50going
26:50to win and i said you got it boss oh he was brand new he was obviously just still learning
26:57but my job was
26:59to make him look really good when we first locked up you know he powers out
27:09i'm trying to convey to the people that you know what do i have to do to get this guy
27:20down
27:23for this to be the forefront of the wrestling business the main event in madison square garden
27:29the beginning of a whole new era i thought i had arrived
27:50he was a heel he beats me and i was the good
27:54guy and they booted they booted him out of the building
28:00victorious in his very first appearance here in madison square garden and uh i started running my
28:05mouth everybody is looking for idol from now on i wish to be referred to and i demand to be
28:13referred
28:13to as the superhero hulk hogan i knew how to be a bad guy and i was really good at
28:19it
28:20we're not going to talk to hulk hogan these people want to know what hulk hogan's all about
28:27i start out every day by looking in the mirror to say good morning mr hulk hogan i'm happy to
28:32see you
28:33again i would rather see myself in the morning than somebody ugly like you you don't like to brag very
28:40much do you not a bit not at all magazine offers television appearances they're all coming in now
28:47i am the new superhero and then uh one day they brought me this note please call sylvester stallone
28:56about a cameo role in a rocky blue
29:02i'll be darned who's the fellow that you uh you do this with this his name is hulk hogan he
29:07is uh a
29:08fellow that i saw one night on television i was laying head insomnia and he came on and he beat
29:13up four wrestlers at the same time and he was a giant about seven feet tall about 350 pounds but
29:18then
29:19i told mr mcmahon i was leaving fall river that night to fly to l.a to film the movie
29:23he goes no
29:23you're not you need to drive all night long because i had to be on charlotte tv at noon and
29:29i said no
29:30mr mcmahon i told you i was going to go do the rocky video so he goes if you do
29:33the movie you're fired and i
29:36had a great rapport with him and we talk all the time it's like a father-son thing you know
29:40he
29:41talked me down off the ledge but i just knew i had to do it so he said you never
29:47work here again i went
29:47okay cool click are you really gonna fight that wrestler they're so big that's all right it'll be fun
29:56tonight we have a most unlikely match for you the boxer against the wrestler i remember seeing rocky 3
30:02in the movie theater twice in the same week i felt it was a slap in the face to everybody
30:09who made fun of me for being a wrestling fan
30:14now they knew what they were missing they could see it right there on the big screen
30:21the general public all of a sudden went oh oh my god is that what a professional wrestler looks like
30:27is that what professional wrestling is that's a large that's a large person and he eats five foot
30:34ten italian we ought to get that guy in the shirt
30:41i'd already shot the stallone movie i think i was out there to do johnny carson show or something
30:47would you welcome hulk hogan looking at the size of your arms i don't believe this
30:52i wish i had anything that big
30:58how about your bank account uh bank of no and me and my buddy went to the red onion
31:06very first time i saw him it was in the valley at the red onion rocky three it had just
31:11come out
31:12and terry was playing the part of a thunderless right and all of a sudden there was a thunder lips
31:17baby in the flesh coming into my bar and i'm looking i'm thinking this can't even be happening
31:23i just saw the movie last night thunder lips is here in the flesh baby the ultimate male
31:32there's this little posse of chicks all around him right all these girls all around him like they're
31:37touching muscles and he just kind of stood there and just sort of like you know flexed and stuff and
31:43i was like all right that's cool i like that oh my god it was very intriguing to be around
31:47somebody
31:47like that all of a sudden linda came walking it was like everything stopped because everybody in the
31:55bar watched her you know it was like every single person in the bar watched her walk walk across the
32:01room it's like oh my god that girl's gorgeous and i said holy smokes and the second that my foot
32:09hit the
32:10dance floor i felt this arm come on me and it was as big as my thigh do you want
32:15to dance hey aren't
32:17you that guy in the rocky music yeah i am she's oh yeah you're mr t i went no i'm
32:22not mr t he's like
32:24it's hulk hogan i was like hunk hogan i thought his name was hunk hogan i was like who would
32:29call
32:29themselves hunk hogan i thought he's an actor and then he told me he was a wrestler and i said
32:35what what is
32:36that he's like well you have to experience to comprehend it that was what his answer was to me
32:41i was like all right well we'll see where that goes after that he goes let's go back to the
32:46apartment
32:46where i'm staying so we go up and it's this rickety ass old apartment he brings me a beer he's
32:53like i'll
32:53be right back he goes in the bathroom right i'm waiting the longest time all of a sudden he comes
33:00out
33:00he's completely naked i'm like all right well say what you want without saying what you want it was
33:06like it was like when you go to the zoo and you see like a mammy willis or whatever they're
33:10called a
33:10woolly man he was huge we drank a couple bottles of wine and just hit it off great and how
33:18many
33:18people can say they got by a giant and we're together ever since oh just exactly how do you lock
33:29up i'm training in the bedroom goosebumps from head to toe he was such a force of energy and and

35:10of pro wrestling you never say never the rocky movie came out and he started getting bigger bigger
35:18the incredible hulk taunting jesse the body ventura they brought hogan in as a villain
35:27the incredible hulk jesse the body lets the hulk have one jesse looking over the crowd
35:31the people really in a way turned hulk
35:41the reception was something that no one had seen nobody had ever seen it
35:45it was a great moment because the fans were writing the plots there's nothing else like it
35:55that's why i fell in love with the art form the people wanted to cheer him people wanted to hero
36:01the
36:01audiences to throw that vibe out they'll tell you when to be evil and aggressive
36:09tell you when to get even
36:15tell you when to turn it up
36:16you see what's happening the hulk is coming alive and so is the crowd and they'll tell you when
36:24to turn it to turn a good guy
36:31and out goes ventura walking is right in his tail
36:35this one is no conscious
36:38a hulk driving his best in the hand of jesse the body ventura
36:54this is the happiest day of all my life once i was a sinner and now i'm a saint and
37:00the reason
37:00is because of dusty roads dusty roads the american dream dreams that you saved up for a lifetime and
37:06those things that you couldn't reach out and get the dream taught me what it was all about he taught
37:12me about loving living fighting and getting down to war about 10 years ago i left tampa florida my
37:18hometown with a big chip on my shoulder i took on all the top contenders daddy and then the day
37:24of
37:25reckoning came the only way to really grow in the professional wrestling business
37:31is to make yourself bigger not just physically bigger but bigger as a personality and that's
37:38what he did man oh man what time is it little dude what time do you have right there man
37:43eight
37:44o'clock i feel like i've been awake for 40 days and 40 nights man and the reason why is
37:48like he got
37:49it you know and it was crazy because i remember listening to him kind of cut through a promo
37:54where does this redneck get off that where does he get off that he started getting creepy and
37:58weird you know and i'm like and for one moment i felt a power like i've never felt before a
38:04lightning
38:05bolt hit me had a great promo on a scale one to ten hulk hogan was a 10. if your
38:10richter scale spins
38:11around three and four times it's not an earthquake it's just me pressing that big elijah over my head
38:17in the sun dome hulk hogan would talk for 59 seconds exactly and i was like cut that's a take
38:23i don't
38:24like to overthink things there's nothing to think about either you can dance and play the guitar
38:28and play the fiddle you can and at the age of 30 hoping is one of the most colorful good
38:34guys in the
38:35game i figured my entrance out i had the music i had it really really rocking if you watch any
38:41of
38:41the old minnesota tapes but i didn't have the most important thing i needed a gimmick he was a super
38:50smart guy he could figure out the big picture more than other people could his wheels are turning
38:56and the character was never not on his mind well there's a big guy fat guy hairy guy bodybuilder
39:02shape whatever a great gimmick needs to transcend the wrestler and patriotism back then meant everything
39:16it wasn't in the politics at the time but we're in a situation where our country was starting to make
39:23a comeback it is time for us to realize that we're too great a nation to limit ourselves to small
39:30dreams
39:31those who say that we're in a time when there are no heroes
39:37they just don't know where to look the fans were so like usa all that usa and stuff of course
39:43he comes
39:43out with a flag
39:46you know it was just so pro america that he he couldn't even make a mistake honestly
39:59so it was all timing and being there with the sun moon the stars everything in the line and doing
40:04everything at the right moment the american reality i'll tell you what it's all about it's believing in
40:09yourself i say my prayers i eat my vitamins every day and the life i live isn't a lie it's
40:14what i believe
40:15in man and people can get off on that because i'm for real when they look at me they say
40:19the man's not a
40:19phony when i bench press 550 pounds before your eyes will do you say that's real everything i do
