00:00For three or four decades, it is the most educated and the highest income ethnic group in the United States.
00:08And I've been involved in the U.S.-Indy relationship for 30 years as well,
00:14having chaired the Asia Subcommittee on the Foreign Affairs Committee,
00:19having spent 30 years and counting on the Foreign Affairs Committee,
00:24and having served as co-chair for four years of the Indian Caucus, which is the largest.
00:34For India, we think of Mumbai, and we think of the general deaths that occurred on April 22nd,
00:42that we are here to commemorate, to recognize, and to mourn.
00:48Some 26 people were killed, and 20 went on April 22nd.
00:55Five terrorists entered into the valley.
01:00This group, calling itself the resistance front, that's saying that in my responsibility,
01:08that in any responsibility, they separate people by gender and by religion.
01:18And they killed, I believe it was 25 Jews and one Christian.
01:26This clearly was an offshoot of the L.E.T., an organization which unfortunately has found sanctuary in Pakistan.
01:37And as the world focuses on Islamabad, where the talks are taking place, or not taking place, or might be
01:44taking place,
01:45we have to use this as an opportunity to ban, that the Pakistani government clamped down on the L.E
01:52.T. and the J.D.F.
01:54and other terrorist groups.
02:01America and India are united because we are the oldest democracy, and India is the largest democracy.
02:07But we are also united in mourning the victims of terrorism.
02:12And we see this chart here going back to 1985, so many Indians who have suffered at the hands of
02:22terrorism.
02:27I wasn't forced to open a consulate in Los Angeles.
02:38Today, our focus, though, is not to celebrate that decision, but to focus on the victims of terrorism.
02:45First, I'd like to remember L.E.T. and Navy Lieutenant Dina Eindalra, an engineering graduate who joined the Navy
02:55in 2022.
02:57He was a cheerful officer, committed to his duties on April 16th last year.
03:04They married his Beyonce, and then they planned a honeymoon to Switzerland.
03:10That fell through, so instead they went to another mountainous area, Kashmir.
03:17And it was only six days after the wedding,
03:20and Lieutenant Garwall was viciously killed,
03:23and attacked by terrorists targeting him.
03:26His wife witnessed his death, his wife for just a few days,
03:30and his remains were referred to his family on May 1st,
03:36which would have been his 27th birthday.
03:40Let us remember Lieutenant Garwall and all the victims
03:44of the terrorist attacks that had been against India,
03:49and remember the victims of terrorism against America.
03:53We also remember November 2008,
03:57we saw that a heavily armed terrorist,
04:01from, again, Pakistan-based L.E.T.,
04:04arriving by scene, striking a number of civilian targets
04:08across the city, including the Daj Hotel,
04:11including the Mumbai Khamad House.
04:16The siege lasted 60 hours,
04:20leaving 166 people dead,
04:22with victims hailing from 10 countries,
04:26including 6 Americans.
04:28So I look forward to uniting with the Indian
04:32for peace and stability in the world,
04:36and in the Indo-Pacific,
04:38and to deal with the terrible, terrible outcomes
04:44of extremist Islamic terrorism and other terrorism.
04:49Part of that effort to bring our countries together
04:53should start with the repeal of the outrageous tariffs
04:58that had beset what was our growing economic alliance.
05:03So, investors,
05:06at the end of these words,
05:08who are perhaps the most underpaid man in Washington.
05:13You see, I get a certain salary.
05:16Branch Carter gets the same salary.
05:17We each represent, in my case,
05:23750,000 Los Angelenos here in Washington.
05:28The ambassador represents, what is it,
05:311.4 billion people.
05:34So, do the math.
05:36He's going to take a number of people
05:39and a dozen dollars
05:41based on the number of people that he represents.
05:45So, we will see the stories
05:49of the victims of terrorism.
05:51And we are dedicating ourselves
05:53to exploring and destroying
05:56the terrorist networks
05:58that have afflicted both of our countries.
06:00I'm Brad Schumann.
06:01Thank you very much.
