Wildfires spark evacuation orders in northern Japan

Over 1800 people in northern Japan have been ordered to evacuate their homes after wildfires broke out on Wednesday. Residents of 700 households in Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, were told to leave after fires burned over 150 hectares of forest and damaged seven buildings in the rural area, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said on Thursday. Iwate saw Japan’s biggest forest fires in decades last year, burning almost 3000 hectares of land and causing more than 4000 people to be evacuated. One man who is thought to have accidentally started the fires was killed in last year’s blaze. There have been no casualties reported so far this year, Kihara said.
