Firefighters battle blaze in South Korea's Gangwon province
A wildfire in Yangyang, Gangwon Province, was fully contained at around 10:20 a.m. local time (0120 GMT) on Sunday, South Korean authorities said, after overnight evacuations in the country’s northeast.
The blaze broke out at around 6:10 p.m. local time (0910 GMT) on Saturday, prompting South Korea to issue a Level 1 forest fire response alert early Sunday and evacuate hundreds of residents. Authorities deployed 326 personnel overnight to battle the flames, and at daybreak mobilized 26 helicopters to help extinguish the fire.
Footage from the Korea Forest Service showed flames on a mountainside as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
Officials said the fire did not spread to nearby residential areas and burned about 22.5 hectares. The cause is under investigation.
