00:01Books are taking over the daily commute with the launch of the Malaysia Book Crawl at Merdeka MRT Station on
00:07Thursday,
00:08turning public transport into a gateway to local literature.
00:12The initiative aims to support 10 independent bookstores across Kuala Lumpur
00:17by creating a curated trail of discovery that highlights cultural gems accessible via public transport.
00:23Books for Better World, BFBW, Chief Executive Officer Adrian Ong,
00:30said the selected bookstores were chosen for their unique curation and commitment to nurturing a homegrown reading community.
00:37We organised something like this last year, whereby we actually got more than 12,000 participants,
00:46which was actually way beyond what we expected.
00:49So this year we are trying to do at least 20% more.
00:53Hopefully we can reach at least 20,000 participants.
00:57We are a welcoming group of people who love our readers.
01:03So do come and join us.
01:05By Ibu Ibu Bookstore owner Tun Alia Nadira, said she joined the initiative to help strengthen the reading culture
01:13and raise awareness of indie bookstores in the city.
01:16The reading culture is not as popular if we compare to the other country,
01:23but it's getting there, just that the setup needs to be changed a bit
01:27because most people would like to browse first rather than buy.
01:31So we wanted to encourage them to participate in the activity, interactive activity.
01:36So we need lots of support and we need this kind of community to promote what else we have instead
01:45of selling a book.
01:49The Book Crawl Week runs until April 26, with participants invited to explore bookstores using the official Malaysia Book Crawl
01:57Passport.
01:58The passport allows them to collect stamps at each stop, which can be redeemed for rewards such as merchandise and
02:05book discounts.
02:06The launch event featured a lion dance performance and the unveiling of the official Malaysia Book Crawl poster card.
02:17A handover of 100 books and boxes of chocolates was also presented to SJK C Jallarn Davidson.
