00:01A new announcement by the federal government means a new, noteworthy addition to the Darwin
00:06skyline.
00:07It's vital to have safe and secure accommodation for our students and what I am delighted to
00:13say is our partners, Campus Living Villages, has designed an incredibly beautiful building,
00:1814 storeys.
00:20That building on Wood Street, across from CDU's city campus, will house 350 students, while
00:26a second development in Casuarina will accommodate a further 50, a clear effort to attract and
00:32retain more students from overseas.
00:34One thing we have been needing and will continue to need in order to extend the number of international
00:40students that we have studying here in Darwin is some more accommodation.
00:45Darwin's importance as a gateway city, not lost on the Commonwealth, who are chipping
00:49in with a $70 million loan.
00:51And at a time where these international relations are so important to our ongoing fuel security
00:58and national security, starting those relationships really early through international education
01:05is so very vital.
01:07While there's no question the $70 million loan is a blessing for the university, questions
01:11remain about the affordability of student accommodation, with rent for an apartment room at CDU currently
01:17on par with the median rent for a standard room in a Darwin unit.
01:20Look, I think it is affordable, really it's about what's included in that, so often students
01:26will be thinking about the cost as just the rental, but we also have all of the other facilities
01:33that go around that, Wi-Fi and other pieces.
01:36The buildings are set to be complete in 2028.
