00:08we've traveled the country meeting the everyday Australians whose lives have
00:13been changed by the magic of the piano placing our trusty upright at busy train
00:21stations thank you thank you very much shopping centers and even an airport are
00:29you looking for a piano along the way we've heard musicians from all backgrounds
00:39I'm a zookeeper I'm a mum I'm a hundred hundred and we've learned why they play I just feel the
00:51music
00:51I don't think about the problems that I have when I play the piano one of the best feelings in
00:58the
00:58world I'd love bringing joy and happiness to people make them feel something they hadn't
01:04felt that day all right here we go watching closely was musical superstar Guy Sebastian
01:14and pianist extraordinaire Andrea Lamb she has that something that can't be taught it's very beautiful
01:22sense of phrasing and line where they chose a special player from each location to perform at
01:30one of the country's most prestigious venues my mind's blowing the city recital hall in Sydney
01:37oh wow with the help of their mentors so start up really really slow our invited five have just one
01:45week to prepare for their life-changing performance that fills me with a bit of nerves we don't have a
01:51whole lot of time I've never had a whole spade to myself before feeling a bit shaky like he's to
01:58my
01:58hands all my stresses and anxieties are really high sorry in front of a packed out theatre can these regular
02:12Australians transform into concert pianists I'm really hoping it can all come together we want
02:20this to be a beautiful moment go out there give it your all it's a really special life
02:36just weeks ago our amateur pianists brought public spaces around the country to life
02:44now with only seven days to the concert Guy and Andrea begin their special one-on-one mentoring
02:51sessions oh my gosh really excited getting them ready for the big night where are we this is
03:00amazing guy Sebastian he's an amazing artist yes what an incredible opportunity to have that one-on-one
03:07time with him hello Caitlin I'm a really big fan of Angie up so amazing I get to be mentored
03:14by her
03:14hello CJ I've come down from Tasmania you've made the long trip I think you can say Sydney's a little
03:21bit different from regional Western Australia how are you feeling since circular key I've had time to have
03:29it sink in now and I'm quite nervous for next week but I'm also I'm just grateful I get this
03:35opportunity
03:35to finally put this little song to this beautiful stage in this beautiful venue coming up we first
03:42met busy mum of two Erin at circular key my dad is a former rugby league player his name is
03:49Steve Mortimer oh
03:50wow he is currently living with a form of dementia brought on through the head knocks through right
03:57yeah repetitive head trauma with rugby league she performed a moving tribute to her dad who the
04:03country knows best as NRL legend Steve Mortimer how's Steve going you know we are further progressed down
04:21the line with it now sentences and words don't necessarily make sense or don't come out as fluidly
04:27now yeah Erin brings a lot of heart to the concert grief pays me every night and there's a lot
04:38of
04:38people who will be watching that have had this kind of thing happen in their life and it's very hard
04:43to
04:43put in words but Erin's managed to do that in his beautiful tribute to Steve her dad I'm a little
04:48nervous I performed the song that day the circular key but when you put it onto a stage and you're
04:53gonna
04:54have an audience I think the nerves overcoming and maybe getting a bit emotional as I play it yeah
05:01I don't want you to be thinking of oh am I gonna hit the wrong chord or what if I
05:05mess up that doesn't
05:06matter right let go of any expectation or fear of making a mistake I'm worried that the emotion of
05:15the song and the lyrics will overcome me it's a bit more of a guy told me to put that
05:20out the window but
05:21I'm still quite worried that that's that's gonna be hard to do I'm I'm nervous I'm usually playing in
05:32my my room for my spy myself with my family and then coming here it's like it's mind-blowing we
05:40first met an unsure 16 year old CJ when he ventured out of his bedroom and into a packed Queen
05:47Street
05:47boy back in Brisbane what drew you to the piano I never fitted in a school probably because I am
05:56slightly on the spectrum I use music to just communicate with people and within seconds he
06:03knew everyone's socks off wow he's a beast CJ is fantastic so what are you thinking of playing
06:16Bach's to Carter and Fugue oh B minor okay wonderful with CJ there's so much potential there he can
06:25clearly play the piano it has really good musical instincts but he's playing the whole piece really
06:36fast stop this piece has so much in it but I think it needs to have pacing so that it
06:46feels like a much
06:46more gradual build up gotcha CJ needs to create more contrasts a sense of pacing so I think having
06:53moments of silence is really important so start really really slow so you give yourself heaps of
06:58time to because you're arrived there and then build it up really really slowly like imagining like this
07:04this very slow build up from that okay okay compared to my bedroom this is a very nerve-wracking
07:12when I'm nervous I sometimes play too fast everyone's with you you you have them take your time
07:20CJ's got a lot of homework but I'm really excited to take him out of those comfortable spaces and then
07:27bring him to the City Recital Hall CJ isn't the only pianist that Andrea has high hopes for at the
07:36upcoming concert when we first met Caitlin back at Broadway shopping center her talent and compassion
07:44warmed everyone's hearts you teach your brother music you were saying yeah because people wouldn't
07:50teach him why wouldn't they um because he had Down syndrome and they thought that he was less capable
07:55I wanted Lachlan to have the same opportunities that I had when learning the piano it's not a person out
08:04there it isn't smiling right now you as a big sister to Lachie was so beautiful and how you shared
08:13that
08:13through music but I really want a chance for you to shine by yourself so is there a piece that
08:19you
08:20absolutely love Leger G concerto it's one of my favorite pieces ah when I saw what she was playing I
08:27thought ah she does want to shine she does need her moment this is a piece that has a lot
08:36of passion and
08:37sass and fire very technically difficult arpeggios going all over the place Jen's voicings bring out
08:47the melody it's a big showcase for her so Allegra de concerto it's supposed to be the larger-than-life
08:55party piece so I want to have a little bit more of that in your playing we're going to be
08:59in the
08:59city recital hall thousands of people be a bit more of a diva I totally want to see Caitlin have
09:09her
09:09diva moment be like yes this is me and Joe wants me to be like a soloist and naturally shy
09:23so but I'm really determined to make local card and I hope this shows that I'm a great role model
09:34in Victoria it was rock and roll loving 19 year old Lewis who did his family it's really special to
09:42have my dad that after all he's been going through in this treatment my dad was diagnosed with cancer
09:47recently and there's a couple of months really tough this one's for dad everybody's moving with
10:00Lewis at home in Perth supporting his dad hello Lewis the mentoring session with guy is via video call
10:08we need something really big and really powerful to open the show my brain immediately went to you
10:15Lewis to kick off this concert with something really fun high energy that sounds awesome man I'm key for
10:23anything and I don't know why but I cannot get this picture out of my mind it's from back to
10:28the
10:28future when young Marty McFly gets up and he and he grabs a guitar and he starts playing Johnny Be
10:36Good
10:36what do you think about that song it'll be interesting to try and get away from the guitar stereotype of
10:41that song he's gonna be playing all of those guitar riffs with his right hand and holding the bass part
10:46down with his left it's extremely extremely difficult just to do that let alone to also sing I don't get
10:53to see you until rehearsal so that fills me with a bit of nerves we're pulling a band together for
10:58this we don't have a whole lot of time I'm obviously nervous and there's a lot going on for him
11:04so I'm
11:05really hoping it can all come together we want this to be a beautiful moment for Lewis and his family
11:09all right Lewis well I'll see you in Sydney I can't wait man it's gonna be awesome I can't wait
11:15it was at Sydney Airport's International Terminal that we first met 92 year old stockman Peter Salmon
11:24and his mate Rosie who together have been preserving Peter's language how many people do you know who
11:32speak your language now me only oh wow thank goodness for Rosie to track down Peter and to
11:39preserve it in this way singing at the airport that's one thing but what are you both hoping
11:45to get out of the concert just the chance to platform Peter's language to a huge audience and
11:53Peter and I were chatting we just want to share everything that we do with others and we would
11:59be so honored if you would perform with us whether it's playing or singing absolutely it's such an honor
12:05if we've got Peter's blessing I just want to share with everybody I'd love to share with everybody I
12:12feel really honored it's more than just a performance this is about something so much bigger guy is the
12:23most incredible musician oh he said his spirit is really feeling strong good I'm just wondering if we
12:35start with Peter having you say a few words and then Rosie joining in to pass it along and then
12:43we
12:43could do something and then maybe like a cello or something symbolizing sharing your language through
12:49music even if there's some didgeridoo an indigenous sound yeah look I feel pretty nervous to be honest
12:57with you I feel the pressure of wanting to do a good job not just for Peter in his language
13:01but but
13:01musically it's making sure we're remembering the reason of why we're doing it we're doing it because
13:07we're trying to immortalize something that's very important I reckon my old grandfather would be really
13:15really proud of it that we you know keeping the language going and hearing about this if he was still
13:23alive I think he would have been really proud about it it's one day before the concert and it's the
13:40players only chance to rehearse on stage at Sydney's prestigious City Recital Hall here we are the gang
13:47this is so exciting tomorrow when all the guests and everyone comes to go and see you perform they
13:54go through that door but we're going through the stage door come with me this is the first time they
14:03get to meet each other and see the venue come on out this is the city recital hall wow soak
14:18it in amazing
14:19wow that's I've never had a whole stage for myself before I feel like a bit shaky like he's my
14:27hand I was
14:29born out on a station I live my life it's on the station so to be on stage I feel
14:37a bit nervous
14:40dad he's been to this venue with me before we've watched music here together it's just so special I
14:46can't I can't put into words we have finished our line check and we are good for there's a lot
14:55going
14:55on yeah how you feeling yeah a bit nervous there's a lot of people doing things for the first time
15:01together on stage it is tomorrow night so it's you know oh there you go that will get sorted so
15:13we're
15:13back to watch the rehearsals you don't know each other you don't know what you're performing or
15:19anything this is a treat in itself it's time for Lewis our show opener Lewis is only 19 but he
15:28loves
15:28the old school music his dad is a big influence in his life it's good to see you in the
15:32flesh my dad
15:33today he was feeling a bit ill getting on the plane and almost wasn't able to come so all my
15:40stresses
15:41and anxieties are really high should we kick off you guys ready yeah a bit nervous about Lewis
15:49concerts tomorrow we haven't seen him in the flesh play this song and we're throwing a band up there
16:04with him Lewis is a weapon of a piano player but the problem is we're relying on him to open
16:14this
16:15show with a bang with energy and you know pizzazz yeah really ham it up like I don't care even
16:22if
16:23you if you take it out and you spin right around and like I wouldn't care if you even jumped
16:27jumped
16:28off I need him to just be the show opener we all know he is I hope this brings some
16:40relief to my dad
16:42and the performance really uplifting Caitlin we have dressed this stage for you it's your turn I can
16:55see where the budget's gone 14 but look how she's leaning into it she's just amazing
17:11Caitlin is definitely trying to hone into her inner demon there are moments where it's just flying
17:17and it's fantastic but in the bigger moments I'm curious to see whether she's going to be able to
17:25really step into her own space on her own terms have you thought about how you're going to get up
17:31at the end could you just like that's it could be the show moment Andrea and Guy told me to
17:40finish
17:41as if like I've earned the piece instead of walking out really shy which is what I tend to do
17:45use your
17:46left foot to repel you up with that I'm not very much of a performer so this will be a
17:54bit hard yeah
17:55I'll work on it piano players need a little mic drop moment it's time for Peter and Rosie hi he's
18:06the
18:06last speaker of his language on the planet and Rosie who's a linguist she has turned his language into
18:13music this is a moment of history yeah we've brought two incredible musicians to join us for this song
18:22William Barton who is a master of his instrument and the other is Sally Mayer on cello we're feeling
18:32an enormous amount of pressure whenever there's more elements you never quite know because one
18:37thing might go a little bit astray so it always adds that level of uncertainty I've got to sing in
18:47Peter's language and it's it's difficult and I just don't want to butcher it that's Peter's grandson
18:55Mitch we'll take this knowledge that you were giving to us saying your language is safe oh pass it on
19:02to
19:02our children and on to make them so happy pass it over to him well I still got a bit
19:08of a life in me
19:09yeah that's gonna be a moment oh so good it's so good thank you
19:33CJ at the mentoring session we talked a lot about the structure of it a sense of pacing throughout this
19:40piece because there's lots of really high intensity moments and he gets really excited and when CJ gets
19:47excited it tends to go a little bit faster and if this goes any faster I think that it may
19:57get a little
19:58out of control sorry I'm micromanaging here but if you could like you could like have a dip in there
20:06so that you've got more to come out from this is a huge change from where I normally play adrenaline
20:12was pumping it can be a little bit hard when you're up there not to go too fast and get
20:20carried away in
20:20the moment the challenge will be to be able to rein it in so it's not always go from zero
20:33to 100 you
20:35know if you can get that right it'll be a total showstopper
20:48we are moving on to our final rehearsal of the day with Erin I'm still quite nervous that the
20:56emotion of it all I might I might not be able to get the words out coming up Erin come
21:02on up to the
21:03stage hello she has written a song a lullaby to her dad he has dementia sorry ah nerves I might
21:21try
21:21one more time I'm so sorry got a little overcome there oh gosh that's definitely not it Erin
21:34she's reaching for those keys with utter fear can you do it one more time for me just this time
21:42don't even think just don't even think about it it's hard to explain the freeze that happens I still
21:48get it there's this weird like block that goes between your brain and your hands and your fingers
21:54with nerves can I give you a hug yes please with the the emotion of the song oh I feel
22:01like I can't
22:02finish the lyrics and no matter like anything no matter what happens it's gonna be amazing yeah
22:07whatever happens it's gonna feel real and it's gonna be a beautiful tribute so yeah
22:19the big night is finally here let's do this show on nerves and anticipation are building as our pianists
22:29prepare to perform in front of a packed out city recital hall this is where I'm gonna be playing

39:37Oh, it's beautiful.
39:54Oh, it's beautiful.
39:56Oh, it's beautiful.
39:58Oh, it's beautiful.
40:18Oh, it's beautiful.
40:24Oh, it's beautiful.
40:24Oh, it's beautiful.
40:36Oh, it's beautiful.
40:38Oh, it's beautiful.
40:40Oh, it's beautiful.
40:48Oh, it's beautiful.
41:22Oh, it's beautiful.
41:25Oh, it's beautiful.
41:38Look at his dad too, he's going like this.
42:10He's milking the drama.
42:12He's got them in the palm of his hand.
42:14Yeah.
42:22Yeah, he's swinging though.
42:48He's got them in the palm of his hand.
43:09Get them shoulders going, mate.
43:13I've never heard bark like this before.
43:36It's a little hot and it's bloody.
43:38Look at him.
43:39I can't believe it.
43:43Another round of applause for CJ.
43:49Holy crap.
43:51That was incredible.
43:54Can we do that again?
43:56I love that.
43:57That's next level.
44:03Everyone's crushed it.
44:05Everyone.
44:06Totally.
44:07That's not a hiccup.
44:11Fantastic.
44:13It's pretty funny.
44:15Good eh?
44:18Musicians for Erin, come on out.
44:23I'm Erin, I'm 38 years old and I'm from Sydney.
44:28I'm gripping you a little bit.
44:29You grip me, you grip me.
44:32She must be feeling alive.
44:34The hardest part about loving someone with dementia is just seeing someone that was just a superhero
44:42to you.
44:46So here's to you, the truest blues, and I'll be born soon for you.
45:00I love him so much.
45:05Please welcome to the city recital hall, Erin.
45:11Woohoo!
45:14Woohoo!
45:15Woohoo!
45:17Woohoo!
45:20Let's go Erin.
45:26Wow.
45:28My name's Erin and I'm not going to lie, this is pretty bloody special.
45:32I also am very nervous, my hands are quite shaky, but tonight I'll be performing my original
45:39song, Lullaby for the Old Man, a song I penned for my dad.
45:44You know, the country knows my dad is one of Australia's greatest rugby league players,
45:48but to me, he is ultimately the greatest dad of all time.
45:52So, he sadly can't be with us tonight, but I look forward to being able to sit with him
45:59and watch this back.
46:01You know, music is something he can still very much lock into and enjoy with us all.
46:05So, with that in mind, I dedicate this song tonight to my dad, to my family, and to anyone out
46:13there
46:13who is working through this unique type of grief in real time.
46:17Thank you very much.
46:19Thank you very much.
46:20Thank you very much.
46:21Oh, gorgeous.
46:23Gorgeous.
46:23Gorgeous one of them.
46:33One, two, one, two, three.
46:39One, two, one.
46:55Gorgeous one of them.
46:59At bath time, books and bed, and then I turn out the light
47:05I sing the same song that you'd sing, of sunshine and the rain
47:10But man, the pain, the pain
47:18Sadness gently snuggles in
47:22Cause I think of all your wisdom, and how you take things on the chin
47:28Life's unfair that I know, cause you deserve to be living free
47:37So I sing a lullaby for the old man
47:44Who could do what no one else can
47:49He lifted up the rest, never pounded on his chest
47:56But he loved, and how he loved
48:00So dad would be so proud of you
48:03So here's to you, the truest blues
48:08And I'll keep on singing for you
48:14A loyal son and brother, that's for sure
48:19The most loving husband to his wife he'll ever saw
48:25Now she's the one that carries him, upholds his dignity
48:31Despite the noise, she brings him joy
48:35And loves unconditionally
48:41So I sing a lullaby for the old man
48:49That could do what no one else can
48:54He played the odd mistake, but he learned and gravitate
49:00To love, he did it all for love
49:06So here's to you, the truest blues
49:12And I'll keep on singing for you
49:23Oh, Erin, you nailed it
49:26My goodness
49:46You are, we can play now
49:48Oh my god
49:54I'm breathing
49:54Golly
49:57Oh
50:01Okay, that was good
50:02We got through it
50:02We got through it
50:03We got through it
50:06I just feel that that song that she writes
50:09Is a lament for her father
50:11And to be able to keep it together like that
50:13Incredibly proud
50:14And so would he be
50:15Oh, darling
50:16Couple of shaky notes, but that's all
50:18Oh, you were amazing
50:20What's the saying?
50:21What's the saying?
50:22You slave?
50:23Yes, you slave
50:24I'm 14

52:20I had a good time, one of the best
52:27It feels so incredible that there were so many people here tonight who heard Peter's language
52:34and it's only because of this incredible old man that they all heard it
52:41Andrea told me to channel my inner diva and I feel like I did that very well
52:47As much as it was a celebration for dad, it was a celebration for mum and it was really special

53:25And even all the paint was peeling
53:29You saw home to put your heart in
53:33Oh, I took a woman like you
