00:04Oh look come on now I do worry that oh now there's another one right Totty hey look
00:14I don't know look what's going on trouble what's going on Roy is that you have attracted them both
00:21they're not even paying any attention to me and I paid for both of them I'm always a great believer
00:26that if a dog runs up to someone they're a really nice person or just running away from a robbery
00:34and we're off trawling Britain's sheds this is absolutely unbelievable for the most intriguing
00:46I have never ever seen one of these the most exciting oh now that is a naughty car the most
00:56surprising classic cars it is very you we're gonna buy them fix them up and sell them for a tidy
01:08profit
01:08nice little earner this is shed and buried classic cars
01:18we're off to Wiltshire on our latest search for a classic car we're going to meet a chap called Denny
01:25now Denny hi has a penchant for uh British classics does he yeah sort of it's gonna like you and
01:33me
01:33then yeah sort of mostly mostly 50s and 60s British classics a smattering of 70s and maybe a little
01:39sprinkle of earlier stuff roots group stuff roots group we're talking sunbeam singer hillman humber
01:48okay so look we're going to Wiltshire for some Britishers i've looked at the photographs that i
01:53couldn't quite see into the depths of his sheds and his sheds look large do they yeah okay mate all
02:01right
02:02hey look as far as i'm concerned it'll be quite fun yeah this is going to be good
02:07whether we find something rootsy or cutesy who knows but Denny's place in Wiltshire here we come
02:18Denny i'm really excited about this what's your poison it started about 40 years ago when i got
02:24into um something reaping convertibles and minxes that's right so english stuff yeah what was it about
02:30the roots group stuff that attracted you the word i think of is cute oh okay minxes rapiers are cute
02:35cars is everything for sale well quite a lot but not everything some have a lot of sentimental value
02:43and it just just would be hard to wrench away from me okay other ones i just feel happier to
02:48let them
02:48go what we'll do is we'll have a little rummage and then as always hopefully we'll have a haggle at
02:52the end sure yeah brilliant great stuff all right well look we'll venture in all right yeah you'll call
02:59me if you need me thank you so much okay so here we go another treasure trove of british cars
03:05oh that's
03:06red leather but this time no austin's or morris's in sight it's absolutely mint
03:14instead we'll start with a gorgeous rover p4 that might be uh beyond our means what would you mean by
03:21that
03:22they're lovely things but one that's just been retrimmed it means that well it's how much would
03:28something like that go for i think eight maybe nine ten sort of maybe ten ish kind of thing for
03:36us and
03:36they are a beautiful place to be inside there you've got you've got lots of leather you've got wood
03:43you've got chrome it's conducive to uh to a good long driving experience that's the first thing of
03:51interest next as denny promised it's a hillman the first of his roots group classics oh you little
03:59minx oh is it it is yeah it's an early minx the hillman minx is one of the most long
04:05-lived models in
04:06british car history released in 1931 as a low-cost family saloon it went through many different
04:13variations in its 40-year life this one looks late 30s can you imagine somebody in the boardroom
04:22saying what should we call our car cheeky little minx yeah right but now obviously uh that's part of
04:30history it is yeah that interior is beautiful it is take a look at that i think this probably has
04:38been re-upholstered so it's not the original and it's from that era that people have just forgotten
04:45now i know people go for vintage stuff which is pre-1934 generally but these in the middle in the
04:51middle lands they don't like them nobody likes a midland should we give it a roof chop and put some
04:56big
04:56wheels on it a v8 in it i need to educate you here why don't you just turn around not
05:03all the way
05:04that's it there we go right now what's that from minx to super minx okay but this is post-war
05:13yes
05:13this is so this is 1960s we're now right at the point where the roots group is well should we
05:22say
05:22dabbling in americana a little bit so you've got the fins out the back wait a minute wait a minute
05:27so roots group were what hillman turned into but no the roots group owned a number of car brands
05:35so hillman singer sunbeam uh humber as well so all of those were all roots group anyway so this now
05:45uh because i can read it is a super mean that's right yeah right now i think these are great
05:51the
05:51hood has seen better days but uh would you just hold that yeah sure let me have a quick look
06:01anything underneath yeah it's not bad news all right what i will say is most of the structure
06:06under there is good yeah maybe a little bit of a little bit of a job in the center of
06:11the cruciform
06:12there a minx is renowned for a little bit of rusty yeah so we'd have to do some dealing with
06:18the
06:18bonnet there possibly so but you know it's all part of its charm all right when things get a little
06:24bit older they get sort of pockmarked and creased and grazed and they don't look as lovely as they once
06:31did are you having a go no you'll think you might be now is that one younger
06:40denny's slightly newer kids on the block include a sunbeam rapier now this is a lovely car yeah but
06:47what we've got a little bit crispiness around the sills and the successor to the p4 the rover p5
06:57are you feeling diplomatic no i've never felt diplomatic i don't suppose you do but this was
07:02your diplomat special transport p5 yeah oh my gosh look there's loads of cars with stuff on them
07:09yeah two volvo p1800s
07:15made famous by roger moore in his tv series the saint the volvo p1800 was one of the most successful
07:23scandy cars of the early 1960s as well as the two-door model there was a hatchback or shooting brake
07:32it's an estate and they have very long legs on a motorway they are a real great cruiser i used
07:39to
07:39drive one of these on a regular basis this color as well did you yeah i did i'll tell you
07:44what they're
07:44really good for as well storing stuff they are yeah yeah well it's got the longer roof you've got
07:49well exactly Denny come come in here now look fuzz is eulogizing about these 1800s has he got the the
07:56sort
07:56of ornate jensen style cowhorn bumpers they are at the back of the shed so it's probably a jensen built
08:03one so yeah a west bromwich special which means that it's quite a survivor actually so why do you
08:10love these Denny my dad when we were kids had a volvo amazon estate so that got me into volvos
08:16we had
08:17a lovely cream one with red interior yeah and then later on i sort of started looking around and like
08:23the
08:231800s and that was it yeah that was it so i thought one estate one saloon yeah when did this
08:28last run
08:3015 years ago i'd say okay yeah all right recent then when i brought it from a brief previous shed
08:35and brought it to this one oh right okay so it ran because you drove it in here it ran
08:39yeah yeah great
08:39Denny thank you so much now i know there's one more shed to look at come on then fuzzer let's
08:44go
08:44and have a look Denny's final shed is another trip back in time to the era of the classic british
08:51saloon
08:52these look are ready for action okay so look this is a singer yeah now this is a uh a
09:00car named after
09:00you after your proportions and the gazelle released in 1956 the singer gazelle was billed as the luxury
09:12end of the roots group's model range with a high spec interior and snappy performance these are
09:19accomplished they've got decent engines they're good family saloons solid this one looks worse than
09:25i think it is yeah yeah i think it's a lovely period piece there are a couple more p-series
09:32rovers in here but i think we've seen enough yeah i just want to do a deal i'm really excited
09:37yeah
09:38okay so look in here we've got the gazelle yeah right in the other shed yeah the pre-war minks
09:43pre-war
09:44minksy and then there's the super duper minks in red yeah i like that that's a convertible what else
09:50we got there was the sunbeam rapier it's a little bit crispy a little bit crispy underneath
10:08okay where should we start do you think well do you know there was the sunbeam rapier with the
10:14red flash needs a bit more work that's quite close to my right that's heartish okay um so look your
10:19little singer tell me about that the gazelle the gazelle yeah i mean i'm happier in a way for you
10:25to relieve me of that oh really okay less emotional connection for some reason all right i think
10:30we're talking under four ish we're talking sort of three six ish okay only 26 000 miles what from you
10:38yes wowie that's all right um super minks in red yes yeah i think four two okay four two okay
10:47okay there's the volvos either of those for sale i can tell no they're they're more expensive he's
10:53just they're up in the teens really just because of what they are no absolutely but also he inhaled
10:58just then yeah yeah well i know you know i know you're not going to get a good if someone
11:02inhales
11:03you don't get a good deal no no that's true that's not okay what about can i just steam in
11:08uh you can
11:09yeah three two for the singer we're in wiltshire with denny in his eclectic collection of classic
11:30british and swedish cars we've bid 3200 on a singer gazelle but he wants 3006
11:39why don't we meet in the middle at three and a half yeah i mean you could go for the
11:46singer and
11:47not the song three and a half come on well yeah okay yeah i like okay there we are fantastic
11:53yeah
11:58two days later back at the shed we show off the uh not so goods
12:07do you like me antelope your gazelle what your gazelle a singer like a sewing machine is it the
12:14same thing no oh don't be stupid the singer sewing machine uh company was uh originated in the united
12:20states whereas this well he came from coventry i bought this for two reasons right uh one it was
12:28cheap uh what was the other one what was the other reason it was closest to the door yeah
12:33i personally think that actually it's done what is it 28 000 miles or something it's supposed to have
12:39done but i've been looking at this or is it 128 i think it might be 128 000 miles because
12:45the
12:45driver's seat is really i was gonna say the same fuzz that is tattered that doesn't happen in 26 000
12:52miles and can i put can i point out the plethora of blue paints at the front i think at
13:00some point
13:01this may have had a little bit of a shunt because also the front wings i think don't quite fit
13:06and the
13:06bonnet look the bonnets aren't it's had a front end it's a bit like you know you know rod hull
13:10and emu
13:10when emu did that sort of thing where he pulled his beak up that's like that yeah i can't see
13:16any
13:16dents in it apart from those i thought we could turn this we could just give it a polish spqr
13:24exactly let's let's see what we can do it looks so much better with a nice polish of course it
13:29will
13:29yeah you know once guy and you have polished it it will be great so it's rough on the outside
13:36but
13:37what about the mechanicals let's see if we can get it started shall we let's see if it's got an
13:43engine oh don't be like that honestly you lot are just all ganging up on me for no reason thank
13:49you
13:49very much it looks quite tidy the air filters off yeah so something's going on here isn't it um
13:58should we just turn it over to see if we got yeah let's turn it over okay are you ready
14:02give it a go
14:06and again okay okay so no first time starter and even with a squirt of easy start it's not happy
14:19hold on what i think that the pump's not working i think there's probably some dirt underneath one of
14:26the valves probably yeah shall we put a different fuel supply tanks right yeah and see if we can get
14:32get the fuel to to go through via gravity and perhaps dislodge anything in there can i just add
14:38to this conversation yeah i've had a rummage in the dash there's a lovely owner's book very lovely
14:43and there is a workshop manual now weirdly the pages that have been ripped out and placed on the top
14:49yeah our fuel system oh there we are let's hope the joke is not on us there we go hang
15:01that up on there
15:03fuzz connects up the dummy tank
15:07but there's no instant joy
15:11okay nothing at all no so we've got a duff pump yeah we've got a duff pump so we need
15:16to take that off
15:17and clean it out and try and coax it back to life back to life yeah next fuzz de-rigs
15:24the pump but
15:25there's nothing obvious wrong with it it sounds like it's making the right the right noise it does
15:32so this is this is the input if i put my finger over there then operate it it gets to
15:37a point where
15:39maybe the little arm wasn't located correctly in the engine fuzz yeah i think that might be the case
15:44so let's just put the fuel supply on there and see if we can uh okay to suck it up
15:51yes it's working it's working bloody hell it's working it's coming out that's great
15:57works perfect it might just be that it was uh assembled wrongly
16:03back on goes the remote tank and fuzz does the honors there we go
16:11there we are sorted sounds lovely it does doesn't it not raffly at all i told you it'd be beautiful
16:18i told you let's go for a test drive okay well we'll connect up the fuel system and make sure
16:24that it draws in fuel from the tank so you've got that fuzz re-plums the pump and de-rigs
16:33the temporary tank
16:37struggling a bit but without the external tank the fuel just ain't flowing
16:43there we go it's right up now is it okay oh oh dear what happened there suddenly the pump filled
16:54up and then it just stopped it's not enough though is it no i think we need to get an
16:58airline on it
16:59yeah yeah let's give it a go the other possibility is that a fuel pipe is blocked
17:06out comes the air compressor and an improvised bung right so i've got some rag around here
17:13just going to press it against here i'm going to blow some air through
17:23nothing yet
17:27yes that took a little while okay i think the pipe might be
17:31quite a small diameter pipe but let's see if we can connect it up again and see if we get
17:37any
17:37action out of it all right
17:41fuzz reconnects the pipe work and then starts it up again
17:48and this time it sounds happier
17:53i think we might be okay we might have got away with it you reckon yeah so um but if
17:58it does play up
17:59again we might have to replace the fuel pump or at least rebuild it yeah so uh we'll have to
18:05take a
18:05take a view on that in the meantime let's put the filter back on and uh perhaps have a little
18:11test
18:12yeah definitely on goes the air filter
18:18and clunk goes the bonnet god blimey that reminds me of a 1960s children's tv show what the clangers
18:30and bagsy yeah i'm a passenger oh no i'll drive it you drive yeah okay me and skill in the
18:35back
18:35all right yeah let's go in we go i've got to tell you that sounds smooth it does sound smooth
18:45and off we go
18:49we're going up to second gear look fuzzer
18:52okay let's try this really nicely sorry you lot
18:56what it's a driver's car yeah it is a driver's car it's not it's not an admirer's car is it
19:07the gazelle was a classic mid-range model more upmarket than a hillman not so aspirational as a
19:14sunbeam it's quite petty isn't it yeah it is really do you think that mileage could be original
19:21because it doesn't rattle or smoke at all well i think most of the things that did rattle have fallen
19:32off that's a successful first little spin happy i think it's lovely yeah it will be all right i'm
19:39glad i'm inside it and can't see the outside yeah that's right that's the great thing about
19:44this car once you're in here yeah it's rather charming that's right let's just try a wiggle
19:48spin on your driveway and embrace the outside okay can we okay by cleaning it and making it lovely okay
20:00in the wild gazelles keep comfortable and parasite free through a mixture of social
20:06licking and dust bathing i think they've gone for the latter on this one
20:15we could be ready for the jet wash in a minute i think so yeah
20:18do you think do you want to get it revved up
20:22prior to our visit this gazelle has spent lord knows how many years on denny's farm so there's
20:29a lot of crime to banish oh yeah that's a good idea get in there mate yeah be careful though
20:37it might
20:37snap it might come up straight through the spot
20:53it's a little bit of a cut on it doesn't it we should get guy to polish it because he's
20:59really
20:59good yeah that's a good idea isn't he very good he is very good at this sort of thing there's
21:04one
21:04thing about this gazelle though what it is living up to its name because it was a little deer
21:14so we've got our gazelle running and i've got to admit looking a bit better it'll definitely benefit
21:20from some skin polish but whether we'll ever get our three and a half grand back remains to be seen
21:42we've got our singer gazelle running and riding but it still needs work before we try to sell it
21:51then me and assistant rob encounter a close relative
22:01where'd this come from i thought you'd be happy why would we be happy basically you've made a
22:07mistake once so you've decided to make the same mistake again so that it looks like you've done
22:12it on all right okay so hang on before i can tell you're going to start this is utter madness
22:17no
22:18because if you make a mistake yes if you don't learn from it yes you're technically mad you've gone
22:25and bought what looks roughly the same maybe a bit older it's more or less more i know that's a
22:31hillman
22:31and this is a singer but it's more or less the same car and you're expecting a different result
22:36firstly i don't believe that i made a mistake with the singer and also if i did it's your fault
22:41as well
22:42me and rob uh were summoned by my mate james who works in the pub and he says i've had
22:49this
22:49for about 15 years do you want it you've been down to the pub and bought a car yeah that
22:55is not the
22:55best place to buy is it fuzz the only thing is you won't have been drunk is the only thing
23:00no no i was
23:01sober as a judge obviously really nice inside it is i like this better than i like this i think
23:07i agree
23:08yeah probably that's better condition all right okay look it doesn't run okay it has been in his
23:13garden for 15 years or in his garage i hadn't seen it but apart from the first i'll give you
23:17500 quid for
23:18it he goes cool okay mate okay so i gave him 500 smash little monkey there yeah and um me
23:25and rob
23:25went to pick it up obviously that's why i haven't been around fiddling with that all right can i take
23:29a
23:29look under the bonnet of course you can i think for 500 quid that doesn't look all right i thought
23:34you're going to say you paid 1800 it's not having no i think it's 500 quid is 500 quid i
23:40think it's
23:40all right yeah
23:44by the mid 60s the hillman minx was the slightly poorer relation of the gazelle
23:50basically the same car with lower spec trim and a different badge and grille 15 years in the garage has
23:57done this one no favors the brakes work oh do the brakes work rob not at all does the clutch
24:06work
24:06clutch no throttle throttle i haven't tried anything now we have okay somebody's been having a fiddle with
24:11this all right so i think we need to continue with the fiddle to fiddle and fiddle we do yeah
24:20okay let's
24:21try it on easy start let's uh switch on the ignition like the gazelle the engine will run on easy
24:27start
24:27yes yes oh listen to that straight away 15 years but again there's a blockage somewhere in the fuel
24:38system the pump has pumped nothing we fetch the compressor and give it a blast ready yeah okay here it
24:46comes blocked isn't it yeah absolutely nothing happening this thing right so fuzz goes down under cuts the
24:55pipe that comes out of the tank and then uses a wire to unblock it oh i'm right up there
25:00now god blimey
25:05i could have been a surgeon you know i could carumba the blockage is vanquished so what i need to
25:11do
25:11now is bridge the gap uh in the bit of fuel pipe that i've removed and then
25:19we can try again see if we can get it to get it to run on some actual petrol this
25:24time
25:2510 minutes later we're ready for a second attempt ignition on starts it up contact start
25:37it's amazing yeah smooth as simple really honest yeah that's running on fuel yeah yes
25:47we're on a roll and when skid uses a blowtorch to loosen the clutch cylinder we've got a movable
25:53clutch oh there we are fantastic yeah it works fantastic we could go for test drive
25:58it is a bit of a squeeze with rob in the back but off we go
26:02this is going rather nicely i'm a bit scared about get i'll try a second what gear am i in
26:09first
26:11how smooth is that oh how smooth is that hey that was amazing
26:16the foot brake doesn't work but the handbrake might try the brakes now
26:23is there nothing on the pedal does it go to the no no it just goes right to the floor
26:28i'll tell you
26:28what the gearbox is uh sawed itself out gearbox is sweet man i like this car so do i it
26:37tries
26:38really nicely try for third i like the layout as well i like the bench seat there's third yeah
26:44all strong isn't it it's beautiful fourth yeah this isn't a bad little car you know this is nice
26:52what 500 quid it's an absolute bargain it's just amazing there you are no synchro needed just beautifully
27:01hang on oh when this has got brakes it's gonna be pucker right okay well i know what my next
27:09job is
27:10then back at base we get out the blowtorch again and heat up the brake master cylinder
27:17not getting any resistance not yet no it's moving up and down so it's doing something being shushed now
27:22at first nothing happens but after a bit of spannering i'm definitely getting something now
27:30yeah the brakes are working yeah i'm pulling it forward and you're stopping the car move
27:35the brakes are working yay i think everything's fixed it's charging it's ticking over the brakes are
27:42fixed yeah it just needs some new tires that is a proper result this car you know mate honestly
27:47i think you did really well no i know yeah thank you so very very
27:53next day the great work continues as we make a determined effort to clean up both cars
28:00alan focuses on the minx look at that skid gives the gazelle a mop and a moan
28:05i am trying to t-cut this car but the problem i've got is every car i've t-cut before
28:12has actually
28:13had paint on it you can't t-cut bodywork and fuzz preps the wheels for the new tires which should
28:21be
28:21turning up shortly look at that it's been off the road for a while i meanwhile are back on rattle
28:29can
28:29duty touching up the minx's wheels this is what's called in the trade wafting just go around the rim
28:36like that but when dougal arrives the new tires will be on it and they'll look lovely
28:44half an hour later dougal and his assistant adam are here with some very special tires for our hillman
28:51minx perelli skin tomatoes or cintoratos oh right okay i like those very distinctive tread pattern on those
28:571952 so what year is that car that one is about 57 58 oh you're bobby dazzler perfect oh maybe
29:03maybe 59 so if you could afford them in the day yeah it was like the coolest upgrade you could
29:09do to
29:09your car what was that radials well radials and particularly perelli cinturato developed in the early 50s
29:17the cinturato was according to perelli's advertising so safe you could drive with your eyes closed
29:24adam starts by using a portable jig to remove the old tires there's the bead seat that the tire sits
29:31on
29:32there and there it is on the other side and then this is the bead of the tire and then
29:38that is the
29:39well of the tire so when adam puts the tire in and pulls the the tire over the rim he's
29:45pulling the other
29:46side of the bead into the well here to enable the tire to go over the rim then he puts
29:51on a brand new tire
29:52and it's corresponding in a tube modern cars don't use inner tubes modern tires have got lower profiles
30:00the flex in the sidewall is in a smaller area of the tire so it's not suited to inner tubes
30:06but when
30:07you're on a tall profile tire and your wheel isn't suited to running without an inner tube you need to
30:13put a tube in back in the day these tires were the favorites of ferrari and maserati and thinking
30:20about two world famous performance cars has given me an idea you've got to ask yourself when you're
30:26looking at two virtually identical cars which one's the fastest depends who's driving it well
30:33very true very true so i thought we would return to that lovely little track in stand lake yeah little
30:40time trial well i was thinking more banger racing that track but we're not going to do that we're just
30:47going to race each other and see who's quickest yeah and we can pick who goes in what with the
30:55power of those cars surely the weight of the driver is going to be utterly critical i'm not going with
31:05in the final stage adam balances the wheels
31:11then once fuzz has refitted them and skidders polish to set a new hubcaps down goes the car and everything
31:18goes back in position dougal your tires look amazing that looks fantastic doesn't it what a transformation
31:28hey indeed do you know what i really genuinely think seeing as that's been in a hedge for 15 years
31:32yeah i don't think that's bad do you i think it's fantastic mate this one i think we're quids in
31:39that one on the other hand is a depreciating asset that's quids out yeah i think that's yeah i think
31:45but hey which one is the fastest that's what we need to know so both cars are looking better
31:52and with its new boots the minx is particularly smart which one though will be the fastest
31:59and equally important will they both make the 10 miles to the racetrack
32:18two weeks ago we found a singer gazelle in a shed in wiltshire
32:24we fettled it cleaned it and founded a mate today the time has come to take them both racing
32:36okay so are they gonna make it to the track well that's the first test isn't it really
32:43it's sedately yeah i think what could go wrong okay well they've got fuel in them yeah new tires the
32:49brakes work do they yeah oh result what on both of them i believe so yeah oh that's great so
32:55look
32:56what are you two going in the um antelope we can do can't we yeah we are we know they're
33:00quite
33:00happy really we can nurture it we can nurture it along okay nurture uh right i'll drive the uh oh
33:05no
33:05i can tell in his eyes no it needs a bit of sympathy it does need a bit of mechanical
33:09sympathy on the
33:10gear change yeah there's a little there's a little bit of a problem with the uh with the clutch
33:13shall we lead then we'll go are we leading do you know the way no okay let's go let's go
33:26and away we go
33:30do you realize this is a momentous occasion what because this is going to be the first time
33:37that this car has been out on the open road oh yeah for about 15 years yeah at least that
33:46it's just over 10 miles from base to stand lake arena touch wood we'll get there
33:55holding up the rear alan and skid are looking at home in the gazelle
34:03it's rather pleasant isn't it i think it's delightful
34:11until this happens
34:26well i think we should pull the bonnet and we all have to pull in what what's happening
34:32we've got a fuel blockage i think so okay we've blown the fuel fuel back through this way but now
34:37i'm going to put some pressure in this side right and if al cranks then hopefully the pump will pick
34:42up okay and uh we'll get and do it some action we'll stand here and look pretty yeah looking
34:48okay we're ready
34:56what do we live to fight another day we're good to go guys you're really good isn't it yeah yeah
35:02let's go
35:09do we live to fight another day once again fuzz has been able to blow through the blockage and the
35:13rest of the journey is thankfully uneventful
35:1810 minutes and five miles later we reach our goal the stand lake arena only for the gazelle to conk
35:26out
35:26yet again
35:30it was going really well until it stopped
35:40and then to the tank
35:43sounds like you old age and blockage
35:47until finally
35:50yes yes yes yes
35:52fuzz you are something just incredible has it come out that end yeah it has it's come out all over
35:58alan
36:02before the gazelle breaks down for a third time we get ready for that all essential pre-race briefing
36:10what we do is we're going to have a couple of timed experiences okay so the two drivers
36:17start like a lemond start by the tractor yeah you get in let's say right you do two laps
36:23yeah you pull in get out swap over drivers yeah two laps and then finish whoever wins is the fastest
36:36sounds simple but our roots group all-stars are not quite race prepped
36:43so you two are going first remember swap over two laps matt is gonna do the old honors here
36:49yeah just setting you off rather than the cars are you ready to roll yes okay on your marks get
36:56set
36:58go look at alan running he's locked the doors
37:05go on now
37:08we're off
37:10look at that wheel spin he's off and away
37:18stand lake is a former gravel pit that has been used as a race track since 1972
37:25that sounds like it's running on one cylinder
37:29absolutely flat out
37:32have you done his car no i haven't no i haven't no you have no i haven't no
37:41the oval track is just a quarter of a mile long but it still takes them an age to get
37:47to the swap over
37:53here we go here we go this is it all right there you go change over quick
37:58here we go let's get on with it going on one cylinder oh no go on get on one cylinder
38:04for the
38:04first lap whatever just making excuses there we are oh hang on go on
38:12this is it
38:13look at that look at that look at that look at that look at that look at that look at
38:23that
38:23souped up gazelles were occasionally used for rallying mainly in australia and new zealand
38:29it's not ideal first time i've been here on a track
38:35this one though is thinner gruel
38:39we're coming in now right let's have the flag ready matt
38:51two minutes we want to rerun we had one cylinder for the first i'm sorry if you haven't prepared
38:56your car properly then that's your trouble my go is perfect al's was rubbish sorry it's all about
39:03the preparation yeah that's right can i just work on your car for 10 minutes then please
39:07no two minutes 32 i think it was it's derisory our turn hey
39:21two minutes 32 to beat okay on your marks yeah get set yeah go quick go on
39:27get out buzzer i hope it doesn't start
39:32i've never driven this before
39:39don't push the clutch all the way down
39:43i'm not very poor wheel spin
39:54how are we doing it
39:56you're doing all right under the bonnet the minx and the gazelle are pretty much the same car
40:04but our revived minx runs that little bit better
40:10yeah i'll tell you what it's quite fun though yeah tell you what it's going to be close did you
40:14reckon yeah
40:18i've got a great idea what you just slide across and i'll run around okay okay got it when we
40:24change over
40:29first two laps 96 seconds go i can't really stop i hope his brakes have seized on
40:37it when we change over here we change over here we change over here we change over here we go
41:04but by the end of the second lap the brakes have well and truly given up
41:09we're coming through yeah
41:12we can't stop very well can we no we're just gonna need a lap let's just do a victory lap
41:18shall we
41:18yeah they've got mad again what is going on here let's wait as we come around for our victory
41:25we don't actually know the timing yet no i think i think we've got it in the back haven't we
41:30yeah we have
41:34let's go and uh revel in our victory
41:40can i just say we've had a bit of an issue
41:44what because i stopped the stopwatch early i stopped it after one lap for the second driver
41:50i got excited so i haven't really got a clue of the timing
41:55so you've either got to go again or it's a draw
41:59i'll have a draw
42:01i did completely foul that up i'm sorry that's the reason why i gave you the stopwatch hoping that we
42:06might get a little advantage yeah i think we got a massive advantage that's right yes and i'd like
42:11to believe we have actually won hey fantastic anyway let's get back and find out how much they're worth
42:22next day we do just that when our local classic car dealer chopper roy comes for a gander
42:30they both run and ride we've tested them greatly yes yes haven't we don't tell him where he's at
42:38how much for the singer
42:44um five or six hundred quid and that's only because i want the chrome off it for another one
42:55so you're gonna break it is what he's saying it's that bad he's gonna break it can we just talk
43:00about the uh minxie yes very desirable quite good lovely patina news three tires brand new brand new
43:09tires somewhere between three and three and a half it's so six hundred and three and a half yeah yeah
43:15have i made a hundred quid did i not say at the very beginning you might be lucky to break
43:19even
43:19actually you've surpassed yourself and made a hundred quid i have i mean and i've got me chrome
43:25and you've got your chrome you've got your chrome everyone's happy everyone's happy but i've got to
43:29tell you though this was three and a half and now it's 500. talk about a challenge oh dear yeah
43:38well
43:38next time i think we'll take a torch 100 quid pro oh my god it's just so depressing all that
43:45work
43:45oh well
43:59you
