The director-general of the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia, Datuk Hazri Hassan, has been charged at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur with two counts of graft involving more than RM130,000 in funds from the Land Surveyors Board.

00:01The Director-General of the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia, better known as JUPEM,
00:06has pleaded not guilty to two counts of corruption at the KL Sessions Court.
00:1157-year-old Datuk Hazri Hassan, who also serves as Chairman of the Land Surveyor's Board,
00:16faced the charges before Judge Susanna Hussain on Wednesday.
00:20The first charge relates to an alleged offence committed on August 3, 2024,
00:24at a board meeting room in Wisma LJT, Lorong Perak, Pusat Bandar Melawati.
00:30Hazri is accused of using his position as Board Chairman to obtain a bribe of 30,201 ringgit
00:36and 16 cent from the Board's own funds, linked to a meeting that approved his participation
00:41in the 14th session of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management
00:46in New York, from August 4th to 9th, 2024.
00:49The second and more substantial charge involves 105,914 ringgit, allegedly obtained through a similar scheme.
00:57This time, the funds are linked to a board meeting that approved Hazri's participation
01:01in another overseas geospatial meeting in Medina and Jeddah between January 29th and February 4th last year.
01:08He allegedly committed this offence at a hotel room in Kuala Lumpur on December 31st, 2024.
01:14Both charges were framed under Section 23, Subsection 1 of the M.A.C.C. Act 2009,
01:21which, if convicted, carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years' imprisonment
01:26and a fine of no less than five times the amount of the bribe or 10,000 ringgit, whichever is
01:31higher.
01:32Bail was granted at 70,000 ringgit and Hazri was ordered surrender his passport until the case is concluded.
01:38The case was fixed for mention on June 4th.
