00:02Work hard, play hard, healthy body, healthy mind, face the future, fear no challenge.
00:09I strive to be the best that I can be.
00:32What's up, everybody? How you doing? I'm Ryan Seacrest.
00:35And I'm Maria Santos.
00:36Swing shot the wall, assault the eliminator.
00:38For years, you've been watching grown-ups compete in these great American Gladiator games.
00:42Well, it's time for those adults to hit the showers and let the kids take the field.
00:46Welcome to Gladiators 2000.
00:48Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, let's meet the red team.
00:51She plays volleyball, she's into sewing, music, cooking, and her favorite subject is math.
00:56Meet 10-year-old Andrea Sampson.
00:58This 11-year-old enjoys karate and football and wants to be a fighter pilot when he grows up.
01:03It's Benjamin Maney.
01:05The coaches for the red team today are Siren and Laser.
01:10Now for the blue team.
01:11She's a movie boss whose favorite subject is reading.
01:14When she grows up, she likes to write children's books.
01:17Meet 9-year-old Lauren Zimmerman.
01:20This 11-year-old loves baseball so much, he wants to be a professional ball player when he grows up.
01:25It's Shane Chrisman.
01:28Coaching the blue team today are Turbo and Zach.
01:33It's big.
01:34It's bad.
01:35It's the wall.
01:36It's a 32-foot vertical climb.
01:38Our wall is divided into five different zones.
01:40This has to collapse in 90 seconds.
01:41And each contender will have to climb as high as they can, as fast as they can.
01:45They'll earn five points every time they can get their entire body into a new zone.
01:49And if someone gets to the top before time runs out, they'll earn ten points.
01:53First up, Lauren Zimmerman from the blue team.
01:58And Andrea Sampson from the red team.
02:02Red team, ready!
02:04Blue team, ready!
02:06And here they go!
02:07All right, for the red team, you got Andrea right there.
02:10Going up against the blue team's Lauren.
02:13Remember, if they get their entire body into a new color zone, it's worth five points, beginning with the blue
02:17there.
02:17First person over the top will receive ten bonus points.
02:20Second person over the top, five bonus points.
02:22Now, you start off into the wall with a lot of energy, a lot of excitement.
02:26You can see Siren coaching Andrea on.
02:29The farther up you get, the more tired your arms, your legs are.
02:34Right, at the beginning, you have so much energy.
02:36You're just pumped up, going as fast as you can.
02:38But once you get to the top, you lose your energy and you're slowing down.
02:41You see, they're about at the same point on the wall thus far.
02:44You're going to head just a little bit into that pink zone.
02:46Look at her trying to put her foot on that little stone there.
02:48She's got it there.
02:50Every little stone can help a lot.
02:52There you go.
02:53Yep, putting the arms up there, pulling, using your feet, the combination of both.
02:56Sort of like scaling up, walking almost.
02:59Still pretty even.
03:00Lauren ahead by just a...
03:02Oh, no!
03:03And Lauren slips on the blue team.
03:06The points that she has earned this far are erased.
03:08She's got to start over.
03:09With 27 seconds left, she's just going to try to get into as many zones as she can.
03:15Okay, meanwhile on the red side, Andrea, she's fighting into that next zone.
03:19Can she get her feet up there?
03:20This is a very difficult part once you get to the top of the wall.
03:23Again, you're very tired and the wall juts out a little bit, which makes it hard.
03:27Under 10 seconds left.
03:29You see her feet.
03:30She doesn't know what to do with that foot.
03:31Where did it go?
03:32She can't find a stone.
03:33Let's see, can she get into that next zone?
03:35Come on, trying to get there.
03:37Look at the two of them.
03:38Oh!
03:39Great race.
03:40Time runs out.
03:42Kind of frustrating for Lauren on the blue side.
03:43Let's go to Peggy now for the score.
03:46Andrea from the red team earns 10 points, and Lauren from the blue team earns 5 points.
03:52We'll be back to see how Shane, Chrisman, and Benjamin maybe do when they get to scale the wall, so
03:57don't go away.
03:58Ever wonder why we have earwax?
04:00Well, it's to stop germs from growing in our ears.
04:03Cells lining the ear canal can make the wax, which also traps dirt and dust, preventing infections and aiding our
04:08hearing.
04:09If the wax builds up, don't go digging around inside with small, sharp objects.
04:13Fight the urge and wash your ear with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide.
04:17It's not pretty, but it works.
04:24Hey, everybody.
04:25Welcome back to Gladiators 2000.
04:28We've already seen our first two contenders take on the wall, but before the game continues,
04:32Ryan, let's take a look at the right way to take off and keep off those extra pounds.
04:37You better pay attention.
04:38Really?
04:40All right, gang, it's another year to get weighed and measured.
04:43So you're 5'2", and you approximately weigh 111 pounds.
04:52Is it okay to go on a diet?
04:54Benjamin, you're only 11 years old.
04:57Your bodies are constantly growing and changing, and dieting like a grown-up can actually do more harm than good.
05:02Now, if a doctor says it's a good idea to lose a few pounds, then there are.
05:06These safe ways to do it.
05:08Eat foods that are low in calories and loaded with vitamins and minerals.
05:12Fruits and vegetables are great for this.
05:14Eat smaller portions, and chewing more slowly can also help you lose weight and enjoy the food you're eating.
05:21If you drink milk or water while you eat, not only is it good for you, but the fluid can
05:25fill you up and cut down your appetite.
05:27In fact, water is one of the best things you can put in your body no matter how much you
05:32weigh.
05:33There's also aerobic exercise, just like what they're doing.
05:37A good aerobic workout will not only help keep your lungs and heart in shape, but it will also help
05:41burn off those extra unwanted calories that definitely will make you feel overweight.
05:46The most important thing that you want to remember is not to starve yourself when you're trying to lose weight.
05:51Snacking on fruits and vegetables during the day will also keep you from getting too hungry.
05:55That way, when it's meal time, you won't scarf down everything in sight.
05:59Now, if you do all of this, it'll be easy dropping a few unwanted pounds.
06:04Not only that, you'll feel healthier and perform better at whatever you do.
06:08Ladies and gentlemen, we're back with the second half of The Wall.
06:11Now for the blue team, Shane Chrisman.
06:17And for the red team, Benjamin Mayday.
06:23Okay, red team ready.
06:26Blue team ready.
06:27Officials ready.
06:28Let's kick it.
06:33Folks, here we go.
06:35It is The Wall.
06:37Remember, five points every time a contender can get their entire body into a new shade.
06:42Starting there with the blue.
06:43Working their way up.
06:44The first one over the top before 90 seconds.
06:47If that happens, we'll get 10 extra points.
06:49Shane on the blue team.
06:51Benjamin on the red team.
06:52It is head to head right now.
06:54Yeah, trying to get in the next color zone for five more points.
06:5764 seconds on the clock.
06:59Ben, you can see, trying to get in that pink zone.
07:02Shane almost there.
07:03Some of the stones are smooth.
07:05They don't have like a little cup where you can stick your hands in.
07:07See, that one's got it.
07:08Right there.
07:08It makes it a lot easier when you have something to grab onto and pull yourself up.
07:12Yeah, but you've also got to combine your feet in there too.
07:14Make sure you keep your feet moving up like you're walking up the wall.
07:17Shane on the blue team almost into the next zone.
07:2140 seconds.
07:22Benjamin not too far behind.
07:24You want to concentrate the heart.
07:26Oh, no!
07:27And Shane slips off, which means all the points that he's earned so far are erased.
07:32You've got to keep that intense concentration going.
07:35The focus, oh, look at that.
07:36He falls, almost falls off.
07:39He's got his legs, but he's got his feet back on.
07:40Recovery, good recovery.
07:4220 seconds to go.
07:4220 seconds left.
07:43Benjamin still has time to get into a few more zones if he can hurry.
07:50All right, now into that next zone to gain 10 points.
07:53Oh, man!
07:53Oh, no!
07:55Frustrating.
07:56Frustrating there.
07:56The coaches get him back on the wall.
07:59Three, two, don't know where to go, debating on whether to go.
08:03Time is up.
08:04Water rates.
08:05All right, Peggy has got the tabulations.
08:08Peggy?
08:08I'm sorry, you did good, man.
08:10Benjamin from the red team earns 10 points.
08:13Shane from the blue team earns zero.
08:16It's time for a bonus question.
08:17Big deal.
08:19Our contenders have finished their first physical challenge,
08:22and now it's time for their mental challenge.
08:24The subject they'll be quizzed on is losing weight.
08:26Since the red team won our first event,
08:28they get to choose which question they want to answer.
08:30Question A or question B?
08:32Question A.
08:33Okay, now remember if you get this right,
08:3425 points to your team and only five seconds to answer.
08:38Why is drinking milk or water with your meal
08:40a good way to help lose weight?
08:44Because it fills you up and you won't scoff down your food.
08:47That's correct.
08:4825 points for you guys.
08:49Great job.
08:51Blue team, here's your chance for 25 points and only five seconds to answer.
08:57If you're trying to lose weight, why is it a bad idea to starve yourself?
09:03Because it's not good for you.
09:05The doctor will tell you a way to lose weight, not like a grown-up.
09:11Judges?
09:13I'm sorry, that's incorrect.
09:14What we were looking for is you'll become so hungry that you'll overeat
09:18or you won't be getting the proper fuel for your body.
09:21Ryan?
09:22That was a good try.
09:23The red team may be winning, but there's still plenty of time for the blue team to catch up
09:27when all of our contenders battle it out on our bodybuilding bungee.
09:30It's called Bones and it's coming up next.
09:32The Fones.
09:38Digestion begins in the mouth.
09:40We take a bite out of an apple and we chew it into smaller and smaller pieces.
09:45Then we swallow it, sending the food on a rollercoaster ride through our digestive system.
09:50How does our body turn this into fuel?
09:54Grab something to eat and when we come back, I'll tell you.
09:58Welcome back to Gladiators 2000.
10:01Who likes to eat?
10:03That's a good thing.
10:04Without food, our body's like a car with an empty gas tank.
10:08But how does our body turn food into fuel?
10:10It does it by the way of the digestive system.
10:13Organs break our food into smaller and smaller pieces
10:16and digestive fluids change the food's chemical structure so it can enter our system.
10:20Digestion starts here.
10:22Our teeth cut the food and the saliva is the first digestive fluid to actually start breaking down.
10:26the food.
10:27Thanks.
10:28As you swallow, a tiny flap of tissue covers your windpipe and keeps food from getting into
10:33your lungs.
10:34But your food does get into this long tube, the exophagus.
10:37Strong rhythmic contractions push your food into the stomach in less than 15 seconds.
10:42Your stomach is here just below the rib cage.
10:45It's a thick walled pouch made of muscles that mix food with digestive fluids.
10:50After two to six hours, a thick pasty liquid passes into your small intestine.
10:54Once your food gets here, it is broken down into a nutrient rich soup that is absorbed
10:58by tiny hair-like fibers called the lye.
11:01That sure is a mouthful.
11:04We'll talk about how we get rid of the food another time.
11:07Right now, let's get back to the game.
11:12Muscles and bones!
11:13That's what this event is all about.
11:15We need muscles to play it and we're using bones to see who wins.
11:18It's called bones and for this event, both teams will compete at the same time.
11:22Suspended above the arena floor is a bag of giant bones.
11:25Most healthy people have about 206 bones, but we've divided them into 12 groups for this event.
11:29With both teammates harnessed into elastic bungee cords at opposite ends of the playing field,
11:34the object is for one player to grab a bone group, stretch as far as they can on their bungee
11:38cord,
11:38and hand it off to the teammate who's also stretched to the limit.
11:41That's right. Once the bones are handed off, the teammate must construct a giant gladiator skeleton in the correct order.
11:46Now, for every group of bones, they successfully attach to the growing skeleton in the correct position.
11:51The team won five points.
11:5360 seconds on the clock, please. Let's do this. Bang!
11:56Blue team ready. Red team ready. Officials ready. Let's kick it!
12:02Alright, the bones now dropping onto the floor. You got the pickers there.
12:05The guys, Benjamin and Shane, pulling across, tossing off right there to Andrea.
12:09You can see Laser helping her up there. Now, the gladiators cannot tell them where the bones go.
12:13They can only help them up.
12:15Lauren with the lower leg on the skeleton for five points.
12:18You see they got a pull right there in the middle. They got the bungees pulling.
12:21And if you go too far forward, you get snapped right back.
12:25Alright, 36 seconds on the clock. Here's the exchange. Let's see it there for the blue team.
12:28The clavicle being exchanged. They're gonna get it up in the right place.
12:31Turbo helping Lauren up.
12:32Looks like that's right on the skeleton.
12:35Andrea with the foot.
12:36Yeah, looks like she's got another right one there. Yeah, it is.
12:39It's another right link, so I don't think that's gonna count.
12:43The exchange there for the blue team. Here goes Lauren. What's she gonna put up there?
12:47The radius owner? Five points.
12:51Andrea with the rib cage. Laser helping her up.
12:54Six seconds on the clock. They gotta hurry and get another exchange and try and get another bone up on
12:58the skeleton.
12:58Three seconds. Can they do it? Can they do it?
13:00They're gonna get snapped there by the bungee as the clock expires.
13:04Woo-hoo! What a tiring race.
13:06There may be a little controversy to this one. Let's go to Peggy and find out the deal.
13:11Could be even harder than I would. How old are you?
13:14Blue places seven bones correctly for a score of 35 points.
13:18Red places five correctly, but they have two right feet.
13:22They take five points away, they earn 25 points.
13:27And now let's go to Ryan for a bonus question.
13:30Now, blue team, since you won the Bones event, you get to choose first, question A or question B.
13:33Remember, only five seconds to answer, okay?
13:36It's gonna be A. Here we go.
13:38What is an example of a digestive fluid?
13:44Five seconds. Saliva.
13:45That's it. There you go. 25 points for the blue team.
13:48Good job.
13:49Okay.
13:50Red team, here we go.
13:53For your bonus points.
13:55What is the name of the long tube that connects your mouth to your stomach?
14:00Your esophagus.
14:01There you go. 25 points.
14:04All right.
14:06There you go.
14:07You hit your eye and you always remember.
14:08Every time I ever forget anything, I just go like that and I remember.
14:11Maria.
14:12Where are you?
14:14At the end of two events, the score is 95 for the red team and 65 for the blue team.
14:19But in just a few minutes, all of that can change because up next we've got our final event.
14:23It's the Eliminator.
14:25And by the time we come back, I'll be right side up.
14:27You don't want to miss that.
14:35It all comes down to this, the Eliminator, and its name says it all.
14:39Even though Ryan and I heard it was tough, we decided to find out for ourselves.
14:43Yes, we did.
14:43Watch this.
14:44The Eliminator starts with a climb up the ladder.
14:47Next, a giant slide to a row of hanging rings and our first question board.
14:51To add 25 points to your score, choose the correct answer by selecting one of our treacherous rolling logs.
14:56Next, a razor sharp high speed turn and a jump down takes you to the question room for our second
15:01question.
15:02A wrong answer here means a locked door and lost time.
15:05But, get it right, earn 25 points and move on to quickly tag your partner.
15:10Contender number two has to climb over a row of hurdles on their way to question number three.
15:14Choosing an answer here means climbing the correct rope over our glass wall and then racing up the moving treadmill.
15:20It'll take skill and balance to get to the top where the final question board awaits our contender.
15:24Answer this question by picking one of the two swinging ropes and it's hang on time for a ride through
15:30the barrier to the finish line.
15:31The team with the fastest time will receive a bonus of 50 points, which should determine who wins today's super
15:37cool prize package.
15:39I look good.
15:40So now, folks, it is time for the Eliminator!
15:47Since the blue team is behind, they'll face the Eliminator first.
15:50Shane will start the relay race and Lauren will pick up in the middle the final push to the finish
15:55line.
15:55Alright, ready at the starting line. Officials ready. Let's hit it.
15:58Go.
16:02Shane, up the ladder. No problem there.
16:05Fiff gets up there quickly to the top. Going to slide right back down. Crosses his arms for the aerodynamic
16:09field.
16:11Big words, Ryan.
16:12Thank you. I've been studying my thesaurus.
16:16Onto the ring.
16:17He'll cross the pit. Here we go. Look at him. He's twisting a little bit there.
16:21You can't go too fast. You might lose control.
16:25There, up some fans in the audience.
16:26Lauren cheering him on his teammate. Onto question number one.
16:30Eating healthy snacks between meals can control your appetite. True or false?
16:34Choose is true. That is correct. 25 points for the blue team. Great job.
16:38Races across the rolling log. Now he's going to come down. Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom.
16:44Boom.
16:44On to the question room. Boom.
16:46Where does digestion begin? Boom. The stomach or the mouth? Boom.
16:49Choose is the mouth through the question room. Is it open?
16:52Yes.
16:53It is 25 points. Tag's partner, Lauren. She will go up and over the hurdles.
16:59She rolls over. Interesting technique.
17:01I don't know. Nice job, though.
17:04Does it nicely do the third point. Question number three.
17:06Which is better exercise to lose weight? Weightlifting or aerobics?
17:12Sinking. Choose is aerobics. That is correct for 25 points.
17:17Notice she didn't run into the water. You need to usually run in and get the momentum.
17:20See? She slipped down. It's tough if you're just using, strictly using your upper body to pull.
17:25So you do it. You want to run in and try to go as fast as you can so you
17:28can get the momentum of the wall.
17:29Now the Gladiator coaches are there. They can't help them up and over.
17:33More of the family from Shane there.
17:36Pulling. Fighting. Good determination, though. She tries and tries and tries.
17:39Our referee says you can go around. If you attempt and attempt and attempt, you can go around.
17:43Your penalty, though, is lost time. Just losing time.
17:46Up the treadmill now to the top of the fourth bonus question. Here we go.
17:49The tiny hair-like fibers that aid in the absorption of nutrients are called Veli or intestines.
17:55Let's see. Hmm.
17:56Thank you. Oh, I've got my answer in my head.
17:59Let's see. What is she going?
18:02Goes with... She's got the Veli robe. Yep. Takes that one.
18:05That's correct. Blast through.
18:08Well, almost. She rips the thing. Didn't quite blast through, but hey.
18:11She's gonna get up and run over there.
18:13Now blast through. There we go. There it is.
18:14She heard me say it, so she knew she had to do it.
18:17Great job. Good job. Good job.
18:19Great finish. It was an awesome, awesome thing.
18:22Now let's go to Peggy, who's got the results on this. Peggy.
18:24The blue team answered four questions correctly for a score of 100 points and an eliminator time of 2.07.
18:32Let's go to the starting line where Andrea is ready to go.
18:37And you can see her partner, Ben, waiting for the tag in the middle of the course.
18:40Gotta love Ben there. Ben's just ready. He's raring.
18:43Alright, we're ready at the starting line. The red team is set. Our officials are in place.
18:47Ladies and gentlemen, let's start the race.
18:52Here we go.
18:55She's still trying to get a better time than the blue team here.
18:59Andrea now to the top of the ladder.
19:01She's gonna get to the top. See that slide?
19:03Woo, that's high, she says.
19:04It looks high, but you actually slow down by the time you get to the bottom.
19:07You think you're gonna go flying right off the edge.
19:09Grabs herself with her knee pads there.
19:11Now to the test of upper body strength, skill, and coordination.
19:14You need a good start when you start this.
19:17Because you have to, you have to get one and then swing back and then go.
19:21She's out in the middle.
19:23And she knows exactly what she's doing here.
19:25Here she comes down to the plank for bonus question number one.
19:28Eating healthy snacks between meals can control your appetite.
19:31Is this true or false?
19:33Chooses, thinks about it.
19:36Chooses true, gets a good running start, and that's right.
19:38Oh, and she slipped.
19:40I just was gonna say, you gotta go across that log with more speed
19:42or you're gonna fall when it turns there.
19:44You know, you're kind of iffy about that.
19:46Because you don't wanna go too fast.
19:47You don't wanna go flying off, but you can't go slow either.
19:50So it's hard to call.
19:51And you gotta gather yourself on the rope ladder.
