00:00Pop it, pop it, smash it, smash it, smash it, that's the way, every day, you can play Beat the
00:14Clock.
00:22And now here's the star of the all new Beat the Clock, Monty Hall.
00:31Thank you very much.
00:34Thank you, thank you and welcome to Beat the Clock.
00:37You all know my lovely assistants here.
00:39We have Cindy over here and Lisa and Autumn, three lovely girls who help us on Beat the Clock.
00:44It's a nice way to play a game and it's a nice game to play too because it starts your
00:49day off in the finest of fashion.
00:51How do we play Beat the Clock?
00:53Well, while you girls go get things ready, I'll explain it to the folks at home.
00:56Well, here's what happens. We have two couples who play against each other and against our famous clock for wonderful
01:01cash prizes.
01:02One of the couples is making so much money that we're going to have to resign pretty soon to work
01:05for them.
01:06Let's find out who they are and meet the other couple as well, Jack Nars.
01:10By our returning champions, Brad Kovar and Sue Ann Pfeifner have won $11,700 so far.
01:16And their challengers come to us from Santa Monica, California.
01:19Tim Norton, Lisa Fields.
01:21Tim.
01:24Lisa, how are you?
01:25Nice to meet you guys.
01:27You're the green team.
01:28You're the challengers.
01:29I too.
01:29I don't quite hear with all that applause.
01:31Exactly, what do you do, Tim?
01:33I'm a research biologist for a medical center in Los Angeles.
01:36How is that going?
01:38What are you researching right now, particularly?
01:40Well, we're doing cancer research right now.
01:41Oh, boy, such important work.
01:43I wish you all.
01:44I've been hearing things about special, you know, new genes that they're creating, artificial genes.
01:51That could revolutionize the whole field of medicine.
01:53That's true, it can.
01:54And are you working on that, too?
01:55No, that's very distant from that, but we try to keep up on that.
02:01I hope you do, because it's very important stuff.
02:03Good luck.
02:03Lisa, how about you?
02:04What do you do, dear?
02:05I work in a department store, and I'm a freelance cartoonist.
02:09Cartoonist?
02:10I'll tell you what.
02:10If you stay on the show and win by any luck, tomorrow you come in and bring a cartoon of
02:15me, would you?
02:15Okay.
02:16I've yet to see one that I like.
02:17They make me so ugly, maybe they know what they're doing.
02:20Hey, champ, how are you?
02:21I'm doing, hey, feeling good, feeling good.
02:22Brad, Suan, good to see the champions.
02:24Got a lot.
02:25How much money you got so far?
02:27$11,700.
02:29Dollars, dollars, dollars.
02:32You think it's dollars.
02:33It's actually yen, you see?
02:35And they're 220 yen to the dollar, so you only made 50 bucks so far.
02:39I don't know, dollars.
02:39All right.
02:40All right, Brad and Suan, and I got a big kick out of Suan on yesterday's program when
02:45we were talking about children.
02:46I looked and I said, Brad Kovar and Suan Feifner, they're just very, very good friends, but her
02:51children have to be 12 kids that she looks after in a special way.
02:54Tell me about those kids.
02:55Well, they're kindergarten children, and they're in an after-school program that I am working
02:59with.
03:00Are these special children, or just people who have gathered together for extra work?
03:04Parents send the kids to the camp, you know, for recreation activities, and they have a
03:08good time.
03:09Special kids, because I love them all.
03:11I think I got something going for you.
03:13You make the cartoons, and give them to Suan and she'll take them to the kids, all right?
03:17You got a whole new business going.
03:19Very good.
03:19All right, two lovely young couples about to play Beat the Clock, and in the first deal,
03:24we're going to play a little game right over here that will involve the ladies.
03:29Lisa and Suan, come with me.
03:32I want you to line up behind the table.
03:36All right, huh?
03:38This will be one behind one bowl, and one behind the other bowl, and all I want you
03:41girls to do is propel these ping pong balls down here and into the tube, and if you can
03:47get the ping pong balls in the tube, and one beats the other when time is up, and we have
03:50a 60-second limit for this contest between you, why, the winner will be the one with the
03:54most ping pong balls and get $500.
03:55That should be easy enough to do.
03:56I mean, I could do it.
03:57I could just walk right down here and put a ping pong ball in there.
04:00Wouldn't that be nice?
04:01The only thing is I can't get it out now.
04:05So we'll have to remember that you're starting with one in here, all right?
04:08Don't you worry.
04:09Don't you worry.
04:10I know exactly what to do.
04:11Well, put one in here, and now they're tied again.
04:13Ha, ha, ha.
04:13Okay.
04:17The troops are watching me.
04:19Okay.
04:20Incidentally, you're not going to do what I did.
04:22That's too simple.
04:23We have special gloves for you, and we found out that you like to wear a right-handed
04:27glove.
04:28Both of you are right-handed.
04:29So we have these gloves with the sticks on the end.
04:31It's, if you don't like this stunt, we'll go out for a Chinese meal right afterwards and
04:35enjoy that.
04:36You must, without using the other hand, must use this glove to pick up a ball and take
04:40it and put it into the tube.
04:41As many as you can while the clock is running at 60 seconds.
04:45Are you ready, girls?
04:46Ready?
04:47Go.
04:51You think you've got it, and then you have it.
04:53You think you've got it, and then you have it.
04:57Now, here comes the green team.
04:59One for the green team.
05:00All right.
05:01Wait a minute.
05:02Su-Ann.
05:03Flying hard.
05:07Look at this.
05:08Now, Lisa's got another one in there.
05:11Su-Ann still can't get the first one.
05:13Look what's happening.
05:14Ah, here comes Su-Ann.
05:16Oh, dear me.
05:18It looks like Lisa has a decisive advantage after 30 seconds, and she has got her totals
05:23all the way up to five.
05:25Now, we've got a late start for Su-Ann.
05:27But Lisa is not to be denied.
05:32It's a close race, 6-3, with 15 seconds left to go.
05:36Now, it's 6-4, and it's getting to be a close race here.
05:40You're not out of it yet, Su-Ann.
05:42You're not out of it yet.
05:426-4, 6-5, and can't you tie it?
05:48Time's up.
05:49Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.
05:52The score is 6-5 for the green team, and Lisa has won her first match.
05:59Back to the boys.
06:01Back to the boys.
06:05Lisa Fields wins the first $500 for the green team, and I think it's only fair to tell you
06:11that Lisa was brought up in China and learned how to use chopsticks at an early age.
06:15You were off to a big lead of 5-1, and then Su-Ann started coming back, and just time
06:20ran
06:20out about three or four seconds before she might have tied the game.
06:23All right, Tim and Lisa, you have your first $500, and then get a chance now to play as a
06:27team for another $500.
06:29That'd be nice to pick up another $500.
06:31Oh, you're going to enjoy this.
06:33Come with me, you two.
06:34I think this is going to be a lot of fun.
06:36This time, we're going to put the gentleman in the barrel.
06:39Tim, climb inside the barrel.
06:41Lisa, you come with me.
06:43We're going to let you throw some model airplanes over at your boyfriend over there.
06:47You see, we have all kinds here for you, 747s and DC-10s and all kinds of things.
06:53Here's a little gypsy moth from World War I.
06:55They're all here.
06:56And what you do, are you going to throw in these little planes?
06:57Everybody did this again.
06:59Now, what you do is you throw it over to Tim, and he cuts them up.
07:03He's a cut-up, isn't he?
07:05Yeah.
07:05Sure he is.
07:05And if he can cut up two for us in the time that we have for this particular stunt,
07:09why, you'll get another $500.
07:11The time we have for this is, on the clock, 50 seconds is what we have.
07:1850 seconds.
07:19I do think that Tim's a long way.
07:21I don't think these planes have the carrying range.
07:23Tim, would you mind stepping out of there for just a minute?
07:25Just step right out of here, and I'll push this up a little closer.
07:28How about right here?
07:30A little farther, a little farther, a little farther, a little farther.
07:34Stop.
07:36In the barrel.
07:38Now that we made it easy for you, here's the way you're going to cut up these planes
07:42with these garden shears.
07:44As she sends those planes across to you, you snap them up, right?
07:47Now, this is a very dangerous stunt, because I know a guy that wants to knock off his nose
07:52that way.
07:53So I want you to cut airplanes, not noses.
07:55So we have a football helmet with a nose guard, so you won't do yourself any damage.
07:59This is not to hinder you, this is to help you, all right?
08:03There you are.
08:04Oh, you don't have to strap it.
08:06If you want to strap it up, sure.
08:07But I just want you to protect your schnoz.
08:09There you are.
08:10Okay.
08:10Are you all right now?
08:11Fine.
08:12Okay.
08:12Can you see the planes as they come at you?
08:14Yep.
08:14How much time for the stunt?
08:1550 seconds.
08:16You have to cut up two planes.
08:18Lisa, ready, go.
08:21Look at that.
08:22He's got one already.
08:24Oh, hold it.
08:25Wait a minute.
08:26Wait a minute.
08:27Wait a minute.
08:28Wait a minute.
08:33No fair.
08:34I couldn't see, right?
08:34No fair.
08:35He couldn't see what he was doing.
08:37You're not supposed to do that.
08:38This is supposed to be tough stunts.
08:40Give me that for a second.
08:41Show one.
08:42Show one.
08:48That was done very, very well, and that earns these kids.
08:51Look at all these planes we have for another day.
08:53Another $500.
08:55The Green Team has $1,000.
08:57Come on over here, kid.
08:58Come on over here.
09:01We'll be back with the Green Team and the Red Team in just another few moments when they'll
09:06be on the way for more bucks.
09:13We're about to repeat the clock, and now it's time for the amen to participate in the game.
09:17This is going to be a shoe-in for you guys.
09:19You'll see what kind of shoes I'm talking about.
09:20These are the shoes right over here.
09:22And Brad and Tim, walk by these shoes.
09:24Take a good look at them.
09:25Walk by them.
09:26Come down over here with me.
09:27Because what I'm going to have you do is get those shoes and put them right here in the basket.
09:32You'll notice that there are two pairs of scuff shoes back there, and you will have to get both pairs
09:37inside the basket to be the winner.
09:39This is a 60-second contest between the two men, and what we're going to do is have you go
09:43down and get the shoes in a most unusual way.
09:46Do you know what a crab walk is?
09:48Let me demonstrate.
09:49Can I have one of the pretty girls come out here and show us what a crab walk is?
09:53Autumn?
09:57All right.
09:58This is the way you crab walk.
09:59You down and back, and you walk that way.
10:01Right?
10:01See?
10:03Now, when you get down to the end, you will put one pair of scuff shoes on, and then walk
10:08back front ways as she is demonstrating.
10:10You're in great shape, Autumn, I must say.
10:12If I did that, the show would be over early today.
10:14All right.
10:15Do you understand what you have to do?
10:18You can use your hands.
10:19You can use your hands to put on the shoes, yes.
10:21But when you come down here, kick them off into the basket.
10:24Don't use your hands to get them off.
10:25You have to kick them off into the basket.
10:26Okay, fellas?
10:27Now, line up one behind the basket on each color.
10:30Get down into your crab walk position, and one pair at a time when you get down there.
10:35Ready?
10:35Go.
10:37Look at them go.
10:39Woo-hoo-hoo.
10:40These guys are really something.
10:42And now they go again.
10:45Get it back on.
10:46That's it.
10:48All right, great.
10:49Red team has a lead.
10:50Get it off.
10:53Here we go.
10:55There you go.
10:58You got one.
10:59Here comes the red team.
11:00It looks like Brad all has to do is get them off, and he's a winner.
11:03And he...
11:04And he's got them off.
11:05Stop the clock.
11:16The things you have to do on beat the clock.
11:18But it's amazing what we learn about a team, too.
11:20I mean, look at the way this guy, Crab, walks.
11:23All right, Mr. Crab Walker, you've got yourself $500 on the board for today.
11:28These are our champions who keep adding to their money.
11:30And now you and Sue Ann are going to play a little game.
11:33You've been doing marvelously well.
11:34No reason why you shouldn't come through and pick up another $500 this time.
11:37No reason.
11:37I think you'll like this stunt.
11:40Got a lot of breath left?
11:42Yeah, I've got plenty of air left.
11:43Good.
11:43You're going to need it.
11:44Come over here.
11:45What I'm going to ask you to do now, even though you're working together, you'll be doing most
11:50of the work, Brad.
11:50I want you to stand right here.
11:52Sue Ann, come along this side over here.
11:53You're in charge of ping-pong balls.
11:55And what I'm going to ask Brad to do is to get the ping-pong balls down into these receptacles
12:00down at the end of the table.
12:01You'll know where they are because they're little flags sticking up.
12:04You must get one ball in each container to beat the clock.
12:08The time for this stunt is 45 seconds.
12:15Another thing.
12:16I want you to get down on your hands and knees.
12:18And here's the way you're going to propel those balls down.
12:23You have one of these little razzmatazzes.
12:25Give it a shot and let's see what happens.
12:28Really, really give it a shot.
12:30That's a good shot.
12:31Now, Sue Ann, you'll place the ping-pong ball right here at this little starting mark.
12:35And, of course, Brad, what you have to do is get him down the end of the table and one
12:38in each in 45 seconds.
12:39You think you can do it?
12:41Okay, here we go.
12:41Ready, go.
12:46He's got one.
12:47He's got one in the left one.
12:49I just lost one.
12:50Okay, don't worry about the ones that fall down.
12:51Here he goes down for the middle one.
12:53He's got two.
12:54All right.
12:55Now he's got to get one in the right-hand side.
12:56No, he needs one in the right-hand side.
12:58He's trying to direct it.
13:00But it's going to go.
13:02Wait a minute, wait a minute.
13:05Take another one.
13:05Get another one.
13:06Get another one.
13:06Nope.
13:09Long side.
13:10Long side.
13:10He needs one in the right-hand side.
13:12You've got 15 seconds.
13:12Here it comes.
13:13Can it go?
13:13No, he did.
13:14Keep going.
13:15Keep going.
13:17All right.
13:18Still on 10 seconds.
13:20Here it's coming.
13:20Oh, good.
13:22All right.
13:23Still this other?
13:24All right.
13:26Oh.
13:28I missed it.
13:30Well, you managed to get two, but you didn't get this one over here.
13:33All right.
13:35Nice try, Brad.
13:36Very good.
13:37Very good.
13:38Snorting on that razzmatazz.
13:40But you didn't get the extra $500.
13:42We're giving you a workout today.
13:43Crab walks and blowing out and everything.
13:45But it's been worth it because you picked up another $500 so far today.
13:48And in just a moment, you and our friends of the green team will be competing in the bonus
13:52shuffle to determine who gets the chance to win maybe up to $10,000 in that bonus.
13:57And that'll take place right after these commercial messages.
14:05All right.
14:06We're back and we're ready to play that one over shuffle game.
14:08And I ask you to please observe this shuffleboard, which has money amounts marked out in divisions
14:14like so, $300, $400, $5, all the way up to $1,000.
14:22Now, keep this in mind that the team whose disc is touching the highest amount of money
14:27will be declared the winner and win that amount of money and then go on to play the bonus
14:31game for 10 times that amount.
14:33Yesterday, I think you touched $600 or was it $400?
14:36Remember, $400, you played for $4,000.
14:38If it hits $800, you'd play for $8,000.
14:40And of course, if you win with $1,000, you'd be playing for $10,000.
14:43Let me caution you that if you throw your disc over the end of the board or over the side,
14:47it is worthless.
14:48And if you don't throw it far enough to touch the $300, we take that one out of play as
14:52well.
14:53Now, the green team has a lead of $1,000 to $500, so they're going to have three discs
14:58to throw to two for the red team.
15:00The green team will go first and last, which, of course, ladies go first.
15:04And then you can tell me later who wants to take the third and final disc.
15:07All right.
15:08So, we're going to have Lisa.
15:10You take the first shot for the green team.
15:12Sue Ann will then follow for the red.
15:14The greens have one extra disc.
15:16Here comes Lisa with her first shot.
15:18Looks like a good throw.
15:19Good throw.
15:22Touching $600.
15:24It's touching $600.
15:26That's what you've got to beat.
15:26Here comes the red team's first shot.
15:28Pump it off.
15:29Pump it.
15:30Pump it off.
15:31Pump it off.
15:33They're both off.
15:34All right.
15:35They're both off.
15:36So, now, we go back to the green team.
15:40Nobody's on the board.
15:42Green team has a great opportunity here.
15:49Tim is touching $400.
15:51Tim is touching $400.
15:52Now, the red team has to make a decision.
15:54Should he try and knock it off, or should he try and pass it up and get a higher amount?
15:57Let's find out what happens.
15:59Brad is thinking about his strategy.
16:01Here he goes.
16:02Just try and slide it down.
16:04He slides it down.
16:06They're both off.
16:07Now, then, green team.
16:09Green team has last shot.
16:12And any amount of money.
16:13She'll take the last shot.
16:14Okay.
16:15Any amount of money, and you're the new champions.
16:18Any amount of money.
16:29Hold it, hold it, hold it, hold it, hold it, hold it.
16:34Come down with me, teams.
16:35Come down with me.
16:36Our judges have to make a decision.
16:39Any amount of money it touches.
16:41It is not touching any amount of money.
16:45It is, can you believe?
16:46Of all the spaces on the board, you have a little bit of margin on both sides,
16:51which means that this one doesn't count.
16:53We are now going to have a playoff.
16:55One shot each.
16:57Highest amount wins.
17:01I beg your pardon.
17:03I beg your pardon.
17:05All right.
17:05Red team and green team, one shot each.
17:10The green team has the advantage over here because they have three discs to two.
17:15They can call whether they want to go first or last.
17:20It makes no difference.
17:21It makes no difference because when you shoot, I'm going to mark your spot and remove the disc.
17:25This is not one to knock one off.
17:26This is highest amount.
17:28Okay, red team, go ahead.
17:36Touching 500.
17:37Touching 500.
17:38All right, green team, this is what you've got to beat.
