00:04The grandson of notorious New York City mobster John Gotti was hoping to avoid serious prison time with a trade,
00:11one healthy kidney for a shave-down sentence.
00:14He claimed he needed to donate the organ to his ailing mother, Victoria, who would die without it.
00:19Carmine Agnello was facing up to three years behind bars on a 2024 fraud conviction.
00:24He was sentenced yesterday and had his fingers crossed that his donation offer could earn him some goodwill.
00:29And he didn't get the full three years.
00:31A judge sentenced Agnello to 15 months behind bars and $1.2 million in restitution.
00:36Agnello admitted that he pocketed $1.1 million in COVID relief funds that were meant to help struggling businesses.
00:43And he used the cash to invest in cryptocurrency, which, of course, he did.
00:50Now, his lawyers argued that a hefty prison sentence would doom his 63-year-old mom,
00:54who's battling end-stage renal disease, saying she's got no chance without the procedure.
00:59Now, Victoria, his mom, who was looking very much the mob matriarch in court,
01:05sent the judge a letter last month pleading for her son, quote,
01:08he is giving me the gift of life.
01:09However, federal prosecutors countered that Agnello could still very much give that gift of life,
01:15but behind bars.
