Firemen who put out the fire in Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan, that left about 9,000 people homeless and destroyed more than 1,000 wooden homes in the early hours of Sunday (April 19), were met with insults when they arrived at the scene.

00:06Firefighters who battled a massive blaze in Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan on Sunday,
00:11were met with hostility upon arrival, even as the fire went on to destroy more than 1,000 homes

00:20Videos circulating online also showed some residents shouting at firefighters and telling them to leave.
00:27Sandakan Fire Station Chief Jimmy Lagung said 50 firefighters from Sandakan and Kinabatangan,
00:33along with volunteer units, arrived about 15 minutes after the alarm
00:38and took around 10 hours to bring the blaze under control.
00:42The crews faced challenges including a limited water supply, narrow access paths and collapsing walkways
00:49while navigating crowds and searching for victims.
00:51Jimmy said emotions often run high during major disasters
00:56and residents often express gratitude after operations are completed.
01:00The fire was brought under control at 8.43am and operations ended around noon, with no fatalities reported.
