00:00A fire at the Kampong Muslim refugee settlement on Labuan Island left 261 people from 42 families
00:10homeless on Wednesday.
00:12The blaze, which began around 10 a.m., destroyed 39 wooden squatter houses in the refugee resettlement
00:18scheme.
00:19Labuan Fire and Rescue Department Director Abdul Rahman Ali said firefighters were dispatched
00:26at 10.47 a.m. after receiving a distress call.
00:30With support from the local community, the fire was brought under control in less than
00:34an hour.
00:36Abdul Rahman credited the swift response of firefighters for preventing the blaze from
00:41spreading to hundreds of other wooden houses in the settlement.
00:45No fatalities were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
00:50National Security Council Director Mohammed Hafiz Dawood stated that emergency teams and
00:55local agencies, including the Social Welfare Department and the Federal Territory's Islamic
01:01Religious Council, are assisting the affected families.
01:04This is not the first fire to devastate the settlement.
01:07A 2009 blaze destroyed hundreds of homes.
01:11The settlement, consisting of 334 houses, is home to approximately 1,700 people.
