Almost 43,000 migrants register in first three days of Spain's regularisation amnesty

00:00Migrants in Spain have begun applying to legalise their status after the European country launched an amnesty.
00:08Hundreds of thousands of foreigners living and working in the country without authorisation could be affected.
00:15According to government data, 43,000 immigrants registered in the first three days, with the programme running until the end
00:24of June.
00:24It offers people without legal status a one-year renewable residence permit if they have spent five months living in
00:32the country and have a clean criminal record.
00:35But there have been questions about the short window to process what Spain's government has said could include 500,000
00:42migrants,
00:43and which Spanish think tank Funcas estimates is around 840,000 people.
00:49The country's progressive Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez argues that those already living and working in Spain should do so under
00:58equal conditions and pay taxes.
