Bendigo RSL president Glenn Ludeman talks to the players ahead of ANZAC Day game
Transcript
00:00I was pouring out, I got rid of the umbrella because everyone else enjoyed it, and that was something special.
00:05And I think you've set, your teams have set a high water mark for respect on this.
00:11It's quite a tricky thing to navigate a sporting event on a commemorative event,
00:16because you're mixing sport, competitiveness and winning.
00:19On the flip side, we're honouring 103,021 more dead, and so many more after that.
00:25The president of the Bendigo Football League, in the early 1900s, in 1914, went to World War I, was shot
00:36in the foot,
00:36and as he lay on the stretcher saying, go help him, help him, was shot in the head and pulled.
00:42And it's just like, that's fate. He's one of many.
00:46He was the president of the league, but he said, I'll go, he's a dentist, and they named the sport
00:51the running cup after him,
00:53which is just like, a testament of what it's about.
00:57But coming back to your event, it would be just awesome to try and duplicate that occasion,
01:02of people being respectful, of, yeah, we've either played a game, we're about to play,
01:09and that the team that rubs off on them, that spirit of Anzac, like, that endures, the sacrifice,
01:16the teamwork that makes you encourage, and those things that just come off.
01:20And if there's a powerful message to lean back on, if they forget it all, 103,021.
01:25That's probably all I'll rant on about today, but I hope I'm so keen with this to continue.
01:32I spoke to Tom about that, and quite a few others.
01:35It's a wonderful sentiment when you have the footy teams lined up like that, and they stop.
01:41There used to be two minutes of silence, and the world got that busy, we made it one.
01:46And it's sad, and sometimes we fidget a bit.
01:49But I teach over the hill here, I'm going to go senior secondary.
01:53And after about 30 seconds, you stop fidgeting, and you start to think about why I'm actually
01:57incredibly quiet, and I'm going to repeat on this.
02:00So thank you for what you are about to do in the commemorative space,
02:04and I hope you, the best team wins, and at least to play for Midian.
